LOTTERY!

Look at you with all your balls in the air! We are ONE hour away from knowing the actual number of the Oilers first round pick (one they may trade). It’s sexy! It’s exciting!

The MacT pc was more info in 30 minutes than we’ve received in four years. Lordy. A few quick ones:

  • I believe Gagner’s staying. Pleased.
  • I believe Hemsky’s gone. Damn.
  • It’s never a good thing when the GM doesn’t know all the Ryan’s.
  • They clearly have something in mind for the top 6F.
  • Dubnyk’s 2013-14 is going to be very important for his Oiler career.
  • MacT makes sense.

More after we know about the lottery.

    ….

    Steve Tambellini?!

    What the heck?!

  2. Kris11 says:

If Gagner stays, Horcoff has to go, no?

  3. Lowetide says:

I swear if the Oilers win the lottery I’ll unravel.

    LT,

If Oilers win the lottery will you promise to unravel in front of a camera that we all can see?

I’m hoping the Flames win so we can watch them NOT pick Seth Jones.

Omigod. To quote LT, I nearly peed myself and it was not scheduled.

That opening picture and the accompanying words are hilarious!

  9. bookje says:

Murphy’s Law dictates that if you design a system that allows for anything to go wrong, it will. (I believe its actually out of the aviation industry or military or something – if only there were some kind of globally connected source of information where I could find this stuff out from).

Anyway, the NHL developed the new Lottery rules as some kind of effort to prevent the Oilers and other teams from doing what the Oilers have done to get the first overall. However, in constructing the ‘Oilers Rule’ they have actually introduced the possibility that the Oilers will get 4 first rounders overall.

I am pretty sure that Murphy’s Law suggests the Oilers will win. I am also sure that general irony will get an assist on the play.

  10. bookje says:

Also, for those wondering, here are the odds of where the Oilers end up after the lottery.

Their odds of picking first overall will be 4.7%
Their odds of picking seventh overall will be 83.0%
Their odds of picking eighth overall will be 12.3%

Ignoring the discussion above regarding irony and Murphy’s Law.

  11. Lowetide says:

SpOILer: Great reference. Forgot about that BDHS quote.

I think the Oilers draft 7th. However, I have a bottle of Glenfiddich (12 yr) I will open and drain should they win.

  12. Kris11 says:

    Odds are for stat nazis.

My eyes tell me the Oilers win these drafts because of poise and guts and gumption, and possibly cocaine. We’re on a roll and your stats ignore rolls and probably cocaine, too.

My eyes are usually right 100% of the time. I bet you don’t even watch the draft, Bookje.

Screw sample sizes. My stat: we’ve won the draft 5 times in a row.

You can’t quantify a draft. It’s got too many fluid, moving parts to be predicted mathematically. Ypu have to go with your guts and have poise and do cocaine.

  13. Gerta Rauss says:

I was impressed that MacT knew the odds of picking first and mentioned them. Tambellini would have needed his Admin assistant to remind him that today was lotto day and told him what shoes to wear.

Tonight’s broadcast is going to be a snoozer-20 minutes of filler followed by the 1 winner, and then 10 minutes of analysis.
They should have selected draft position for all 14 teams via lottery-same odds as now, but every team’s position is determined by the lottery balls.

    Now that’s entertainment.

  14. Kris11 says:

How do I buy tickets for this lottery?

  15. DBO says:

No way we win right? I think based on MacT’s comments the 1st rd pick is either dealt for a good player, or dealt for us to drop in the draft and pick up a prospect as well. Think he said that scenario exactly at one point.

As for Hemsky, I think it comes down to value. Same for gagner. If he can flip them for something that better fits us, then they are gone. He did have a lot of nice things to say about Gagner, so if you take him at face value then Gagner is here (just not necessarily as a centre). A bigger, more physical 2nd line wing/centre will be here even if it means an overpay seems to be the case. As long as that overpay does not include Yak, Hall, Evs, Nuge or Shultz, then I am fine.

  16. Kris11 says:

  65. godot10 says:

Not me, with the caveat that (as always) it depends on the deal.

I think it’s good to see EDM end up with a top 7 pick, as IMO there’s a gap after the top 7, but I suppose it doesn’t much matter if they trade the pick away. Except that, in theory, you might get more for the 7th pick in a trade than the 8th.

Makes much more sense to me to draft with the pick, and then move 2014 picks via trade or offer sheet to improve the club if you have.the desire to improve the club by moving draft picks

lol. I read it and thought I had to the end of May. Because old man.

  69. Gerta Rauss says:

They can shop that pick and if they don’t like what is being offered in return they can take a nice player at 7.

I’d prefer they deal next year’s pick-offering next years pick and a little cap relief for a cap strapped team should get them a NHL ready player.

  70. justDOit says:

    speeds,

That’s the best plan I’ve heard – keep this year’s picks and trade the 14′s.

  71. DBO says:

so which team who fell in the standings and are looking to rebuild can we deal the pick to and for what?
Tampa? they have cap issues so could be a smart spot.
Florida? they will buy me free agents, so doubt they sell. Unless the Kulikov rumours are true, if so you move the 7th pus for him. Perfect fit.
    Colorado> nope.
Calgary? hehe. although for Giordano I would do it. They wouldn’t.
Buffalo? lots of dudes with term and dollars.

  75. Kris11 says:

    Speeds,

I do the deal even at a loss.

The team needs to win now. Yak and RNH ELC’s are burning.

There are 5 young star players (Hall, Yak, RNH, Eberle, Schultz) on the roster already and a decent stable of middling prospects and up and comers in the hopper (Klefbom, MPS, Marincin, Lander, Hartikainen) already.

A good team balances present roster and future assets. Right now they need more present and have future assets to spend. And

I don’t mind not trading the pick, but it us hard to add everything needed to mAke the team competitive over the next two years without doing so, IMO.

  76. bookje says:

  77. Rondo says:

Jones . Drouin, Barkov and MacKinnon will be in the top 4 sounds like

Carolina needs wingers and Dmen – they may trade down if they want a Dman, Russian factor ?
Calgary needs Center may take the Russian also

We’ll see how things are looking as the UFA/RFA crop is shaping up, I don’t think it would be impossible to plug most of the holes via UFA/RFA/trades without moving the 7th. And I also would be in favor of EDM moving the 7th if it were a great deal, I just don’t think they’ll get such a deal offered and therefore would prefer they keep the 7th.

You don’t win a Stanley Cup with one centre. It is the gaping hole in the current rebuild. The best place to find the 2nd centre is with a high draft pick and this draft has the high end centres.

A good GM can build a team without trading 1st round draft picks.

  84. BlacqueJacque says:

Heh… so the Oilers with 3 number 1s, the Avs with two second overalls and a first…

Yup. Glad they’re leaving our conference.

  85. maudite says:

I really don’t want to deal that pick if we can get one of the top tier C’s in the draft. We aren’t going to win a cup next year. Having a ELC contract top quality center, with size and potential two way ability, prospect in the system isn’t something that should be lightly tossed out. It will be needed. We don’t need to fix this all in one shot we just need to put another 2 defense in the upper half and fix the bottom lines really.

    Hall Nuge Yak
    PVR – xxx – Gagner
    Jussi – Horc – xxxx
    Harti – Lander? – xxxx

PB Brown (they will keep him)
    depth center

top 4 D: smid, petry, xxx, xxx
    5/6: J shultz, N shultz
    7 potter

If it were me, Gagner (on a <4.5 mil contract) is my 2RW and Eberle is what I deal for my 2C RFA for a defenseman with next years picks to fill one of those spots. deal package of hemsky + d prospect for other one.

Jussi is there because having Gagner and Jussi as wingers that can slide into center would be a brilliant move. I think he would be a good fit here.

    Rasmus Ristolainen
    Nikita Zadorov
    Hunter Shinkaruk/Darnell Nurse

Sounds like Domi has jumped right behind the 10th spot and Lazar must have jumped way up as well.

“Max DOMI and Edmonton Oil King forward Curtis LAZAR were the only ones to get multiple Top 10 votes. Domi, for example, was extremely close to finishing tied with Shinkaruk and Nurse. Domi was No. 18 in January, Lazar was No. 25.”

If Lazar keeps playing past tomorrow and rising he may end up too high to trade down for and I don’t believe they take him at 7th.

    tsg,

  92. Нинтендо⁶⁴ says:

    Нинтендо⁶⁴,

Oh and if you do draft him you send Yak sliding to the podium to announce it.

I should kind of re-state that, I’m open to any trade that improves the club, but I wouldn’t generally be looking to move an early 1st round pick because if you keep the first, you’re getting a player that could be good for a long time at a reasonable price. The way I wrote that makes it sound like I’m more in favor of moving the pick that I am. Personally, I’d be really hesitant to move that pick. Given how freely EDM is talking about moving it and how many other top picks they’ve had recently, I have some concern that EDM kind of looks at this one as superfluous and isn’t going to properly value it; that because they want to get better quickly, they’ll force a trade where maybe most wouldn’t.

To move the 7th, I would be expecting EDM to get someone on a good contract (or an RFA) for more than a few years, and at an age where the player isn’t likely to drop off during the course of the deal. I don’t think a team would likely give that up, and if that’s the case, I’d prefer EDM keep the pick.

if it is at all accurate, Edmonton would draft Monahan.

if that’s the case, they should keep the pick and draft Monahan.

  95. Нинтендо⁶⁴ says:

    striatic,

Monahan might be gone unless someone trades up into the top 6 to take Nichushkin. At least 2/3 of the scouts have Nichushkin in the top 5 but would not take him that high. But some teams have or see less risk there. Some East coast teams would kill for him.

  96. till_horcoff_is_coach says:

    1. I haven’t been able to post from iPhone in awhile now… always crashes the browser.

    2. Sounds like the Oil are picking lower, but what about Hemsky + 7th to Florida for 2nd OV + Jovo? Florida is drowning in C prospect depth and Hemksy + Nurse potentially could do them better than a second Huberdeau in Drouin…. a stretch I know.

  97. tsg says:

    Нинтендо⁶⁴,

Yeah, the one reason not to draft him in that situation would be if he gives the impression he isn’t dedicated to playing in North America. If he gives every indication of wanting to play here, up Yak goes to the podium.

  98. Нинтендо⁶⁴ says:

Haha, I’ve been banging on this drum with you for awhile.

    The other day I made a suggestion about Livefyre–it wasn’t well-received.

In terms of the iphone, I can’t comment at all with mine (iPhone 5).

My wife’s iPad 3 doesn’t work ever here (for commenting) and my iPad 2 will sometimes work as long as I don’t quote or click reply to a particular person.

What I can tell you is that I wasted time commenting on random WordPress powered blogs with my iPad. I had zero problems except when commenting at Lowetide–so it’s unique to this site.

IIRC the orignal theme is from Elegant Themes–I tried commenting on their demo themes with my iPad and viola, no problems.

Then it occurred to me that WordPress doesn’t typically have a “quote” option for comments. I have to assume that there’s a plugin that Danny installed for this. I suspect that’s the source of the problem. It’s probably the same plugin that let’s you edit comments–again, this isn’t a standard option for WordPress comments.

This year our player (Yakupov) is in the same situation with more goals and better plus minus and they won’t give it to him. Fing East coast bias F#$K.

Trade with Carolina, who can get the winger or defenseman they want at 7, and thus pick the Centre that Calgary wants ahead of the Flames.

A good GM can build a team without trading 1st round draft picks.

    Best point in this thread.

If MacT is a good GM, he has to be able to make good, low-key, value trades and signings to improve the team.

Case in point – last year – Roszival and Winnik

Out of tonight/today’s festivities I agree with LT that it seems Gagner is staying and Hemsky is gone.

I also agree with DBO that Florida seems to be a complementary trade partner for the Oilers. They are deep at center but need right wingers and offensive defensemen. There 2nd overall pick is likely to be a center or a left wing.

If it wasn’t my perception that Florida is unlikely to want to spend money it would seem a deal involving Hemsky and a high end prospect like Marincin or Germat would appeal to them. I covet Shawn Matthias and Dmitry Kulikov of there roster. I can’t imagine why they would give up on Kulikov but if they are tempted to shop him the Oilers should be knocking on the door.

If Oil Change really wants to be must see TV showing RK’s and MacT’s morning meeting this week would be a winner. They have both impressed me over the last few days, hopefully they continue to do so all summer.

LT caught your first show today, well done. May it long continue.

MacT gives the impression that he has a plan for the Coke machine in the top six for next year. Hemsky seems to be the bait. Rajala for Nino would work for me, it sounds like MacT is aiming higher.

  130. Wes Mantooth-11 says:

    godot10,

This is my exact thought process on this, swapping picks makes the most sense, plus a second or a roster player, perhaps Hemsky while buying some salary down.

I keep asking, if the Oilers keep Gagner, how do they intend to fill the number 1 D-man position long term?

How do they intend to get bigger in the top six?

How do they pick much needed size in the top six at LW?

How do they pick up checking line players and forth line players?

We know UFA’s will sign at the best chance to win, leaving us the scattered remains, unless they grossly over pay which does nothing for the Oilers.

I don’t see how the Oilers procure the talent and possible 6 new players?

They move Gagner or one of the kids. If they move a kid that’s the first step to becoming worse then the NYI

  132. DBO says:

So a team like Buffalo may be interesting. could our 7th and a prospect get Sekera and Stafford? improves us right now, adds two guys in good age range (26 and 27), 2 years left on deals which means it fits our cap issue when Yak gets paid.

  133. Gerta Rauss says:

    DBO,

While I agree that Buffalo could be a trading partner, a deal like that is something I would offer next year’s 1st round pick for-lots of salary coming our way and we “help” Buffalo out by not demanding to send a lot of salary back.

I like both those players though.

  134. DBO says:

    Gerta Rauss,

Horton has had too many concussions over the last 2 years.

  138. RickDeckard says:

The Oilers and fans already earned the pick this year. Trade the 2014 and 2015 Kessel style.

    Hear hear.

  140. gd says:

The top 7 would have all been in the discussion for #1 last year. Lindholm looks like a reasonable facsimile of Galchynyuk, Monahan has the perfect skill set of what the Oil is missing up front and Nich has too much talent to turn down at 7. I see no need to trade up unless they have one of those three ranked so much higher than the other. I think they can assume Carolina or someone else is going fall for one of the big Dmen and they will get a choice of two elite guys.

The 2013-14 holes should be filled some other way. This year’s pick will still be in the the right age cohort for the team’s contending years.

  141. RMGS says:

With all this very public talk about “impatience” and being “bold” and “trading our pick,” MacT is likely a terrible poker player! I can’t help but ask myself, “would Ken Holland do that?”

  142. VanOil says:

Lost in the other excitement of the day, did anyone else catch MacT’s Petrell bomb. Something along the lines that having a player who’s only goal is to go out and have nothing happen is not good enough, you need to score.

Goodbye Petrell, Smithson and the Belanger triangle.

  143. RickDeckard says:

    RMGS,

    Playing hard to get.

“I know this asshole is desperate to get results this year, why isn’t he trading me that pick for this? I’ll have to offer him THAT.”

Remember that Burke was always saying he was impatient.

  144. eidy says:

Haven’t they talked about moving the first pick before, might even have been last year. I am hoping that MacT gets to Florida and SMB tells him how deep the draft is and how good Monahan or Lindholm would be long term.

I’m with speeds and think that getting a chance at 7 with the talent up there shouldn’t be passed up lightly. My fear is they want to fall back to get in Lazar territory. McKenzie talked about one or more scouts having Lazar in the first 10- likely an Edmonton scout

I’m hoping that Carolina looks at their centre depth and tries for a D or the Russian. They have no problem choosing Semin long term who was once thought to be KHL bound, hopefully Nikushkin is too intriguing to pass up.

  145. VanOil says:

In his defense he has qualified that he is looking to build a team for the long term not just a quick hit. Proof will be in the pudding. Hopefully he will express his impatience with offer sheets like GODOT10 suggests. Having no picks for next year is a good incentive to make the playoffs and make them worthless, the anti Burke move.

  147. GordM says:

Just watched the MacT presser and was very impressed. Confident, Calculated, articulated his positions with direct ties to the team and/or the game. A far cry from Tambellini (which, now in hindsight, were a mess), and Lowe who spoke with passion but little else.

Every time I hear him speak, I get this feeling MacTavish already has a handshake agreement with another GM. My best guess is someone with cap space issues heading into the offseason who know they have to make a move. Why would he be so proactive at talking “bold” and “significant change” entering a situation with which you have little control (i.e. free agency and the trade market). I can see Lowe making that mistake (he has before) but MacTavish seems to smart to corner himself like that.

Looking forward to June 30th and the days to follow.

I’m a CS major and would love to help out with any sort of website upgrades or mobile app development should it happen. Just leave a note somewhere here in the comments and I’ll see it.

For any bettors out there, there could be some value to had betting on NYI.

    NYI Fenclose: 52.01
    PIT Fenclose: 49.87

    NYI Fentied: 52.18
    PIT Fentied: 49.74

    NYI CF%: 50.0
    PIT CF%: 49.0

    NYI SF%: 52.5
    PIT SF%: 50.1

NYI are currently +320 to beat PIT in the first round. They’re not quite the 8th seed juggernauts LA was last year, but they’re better than their seeding.

  149. BlacqueJacque says:

Well, the MacT press conference can be summarized as thus:

    1. Coke machines. We love us some coke machines.
    2. Goodbye Petrell, Belanger, Smithson, and anyone else who can’t score.
    3. More footspeed on defence. There’s obviously no doubt that Whitney was gone even before MacT said this, but goodbye Whitney. And likely Fistric.
    4. We’re the Oilers, fuck it, we’re going to rush Marincin and Klefbom.
    5. 8 new oilers – well, not half the roster, just a third.

  150. Gerta Rauss says:

    melancholyculkin,

I’ll leave it to Danny and the troubleshooting process to determine if a mobile app is the preferred course of action-if it’s just a question of embedding videos(or not) or just ios friendly plug ins then a mobile app may not be needed.

I think the resources are available amongst the group if a financial contribution is required.

  151. PunjabiOil says:

Would Tambellini ever say something like this:

There has been talk of Gagner’s deficiency in the faceoff circle (43.9 per cent this season) and whether he’d be a better fit on the wing, but MacTavish, one of the better faceoff guys when he played, shrugged it off.

“The critical draws are the defensive zone ones and, according to the analytics people, every 40 faceoffs you lose in the defensive zone, one will wind up in your net in the next 30 seconds. There are ways you can help support a centreman, play him with somebody who takes those faceoffs, or the other option is you move a player to the wing,” said MacTavish.

  154. WeridAl says:

Depends on the type of center Calgary is looking for. If they’re looking for a playmaker, they pick Lindholm, otherwise they pick Monahan. IMO I think Calgary needs a PMD more than anything else, Rasmus Ristolainen or Darnell Nurse would be ideal for them.

Quick note, Marincin is the OKC Baron D of the year.

The other thing that might happen is that Carolina might trade the #5 to the Rangers in a deal for Marc Staal. Staal has two years to UFA status, and people already are suggesting that he is headed to Carolina.

Carolina is sort of more of a now team than ever. The Rangers have salary cap issues.

It crashes in all browsers – again, it’s just those pages with videos embedded.

  157. godot10 says:

The other comment I have after sleeping on the MacT press conference is that MacT does consider the date on Sam Gagner’s birth certificate more than some of his critics. A lot of players only make the NHL at 23. And thus, MacT doesn’t view Gagner as a finished product yet.

Part of the trouble with Gagner is that we got/get to see the sausage being made. Development isn’t a straight line. For most players, we don’t get to see much of the sausage-making process. The old familiarity breeds contempt.

  158. gcw_rocks says:

See, they should have kept Tambelini for another couple of weeks and won that lottery. Would it really have made a difference if they fired Tambo on May 1st?

I was really surprised on his comments on Dubnyk. When you have a team that needs the number of changes this team requires (6 to 8 roles by MacT’s admission), giving anything less than a ringing endorsement of your goalie after the year he had seems pointless and potentially destructive, especially when he is headed towards free agency at the end of next season. Of course, it wouldn’t be the Oilers under Lowe if they weren’t courting friction with players.
