OILERS AT FLAMES G36 (12-13) 3.4.13

I went into today hoping the Oilers would acquire Mark Streit, Ben Bishop, a 4line C for depth and if they had to add a physical winger let it be Glencross or Torres or someone like that (who could take/make a pass and add to the skill set).

The club acquired Jerred Smithson for a 4th rd pick to address center depth, and apparently tried to get Bishop out of Ottawa with Ryan Jones and a pick (rumored). I also know they wanted a physical winger, but was pleased they didn’t offer the winning bid on Raffi Torres (it would have taken a 2nd rd pick to get him).

Those are the positives.

The negatives? They didn’t unload any of the veteran UFA’s (Khabibulin, Jones, Whitney, Fistric) and still have 8 defensemen. I also worry they may be thinking of signing some of those UFA’s this summer. Finally, they didn’t make room for Hartikainen and I believe he’s earned the stretch run. Oh well, injuries will take care of it.

The major negative? The Oilers players and the fans deserve a better defense, a stronger 6-man unit who can stay away from 40-second shifts of carnage. If you look very hard you can actually see the problem:

whitney99

Steve  Tambellini’s press conference (I caught it in the car) runs at exact cross purposes with this graph. If we ever wanted to know if the Edmonton Oilers are in lock step with advanced stats, shame on us for not knowing now.

Toronto Maple Leafs v Nashville Predators

Smithson took a hammering in the comments section of my blog today, although I think it’s meant for Steve Tambellini. Smithson isn’t Jim Dowd, or Boyd Gordon, or any number of effective 4line centermen who roam the earth at any given time. Still, he’s a veteran who will allow Ryan Smyth to move over to his natural position and the Oilers to choose between Mike Brown and Lennart Petrell on the other wing. He cost a 4th rd pick, but that’s not exactly high cotton and I’d rather pay high for an expiring contract. Maybe Lander’s ready next fall, or maybe the Oilers will find a solution through free agency, but Smithson is a stop gap and that’s reflected in the price. Faceoffs, penalty kill, hell he’ll even make people happy because he has a large number of hits.

His CorsiRel is second last among Florida forwards, he has the toughest zone start and he’s delivering about as much 5×5/60 as Ryan Smyth this season. He’s good on faceoffs.

VERY ANGRY

If you’re asking me to get angry at the Edmonton Oilers tonight, I’ll gladly do it. However, I’m going to start and end with the decision to keep Whitney and failure to launch on acquiring an upgrade to replace him. I began my post this morning “I’ve written more words about the blue than anything else on this blog, and when it comes to the Oilers the river leads to an ocean” and begin this evening wondering if there’s anything bigger than an ocean.

 THE REAL PROBLEM

Paltrow

The real problem might be this: today’s events imply Steve Tambellini has the age old Oiler problem of not being able to part with his own additions. If Steve Tambellini can’t flush Nikolai Khabibulin and Ryan Whitney, we’re as doomed as doomed can be.

About tonight:

weir4

Oilers have to win tonight. They’re the better club and they could wake up tomorrow morning in a playoff spot. After these long months of bad nights, tonight could be a very good one for the Oilers and the fans.

Finally!

Dubnyk is shaky as hell with the puck tonight…yikes

  12. striatic says:

    Lowetide: Dubnyk all world.

he will have to be in more than the remainder of this game if the Oilers are to have any kind of shot at the playoffs.

  13. BlacqueJacque says:

    striatic:
    that was supernatural.

Which part, Dubnyk’s diving save, or Whitney being in position?

  14. Lowetide says:

    Yakupov (Gagner, Whitney)

And you fucking guys wanted Whitney gone. Honestly.

  24. Lucinius says:

    Lowetide,

    I know, right?

Who would trade Whitney? The guy is ALL-STAR!

Maybe Hall knows what he’s talking about…..

  25. BlacqueJacque says:

What did Hall say about Whitney?

HALL SCORES! Powerplay goal. Horc in front of the net provided the necessary deflection for the pass.

  26. Rebilled says:

    HALL WORLD!

No other way to put it.

  30. Lowetide says:

  31. fuzzy muppet says:

  33. rich says:

That guy Hall might just make it, ya know.

  34. striatic says:

how does Hall have that much time over there?

even on the PP, major lapse from CGY.

  35. icecastles says:

Lois Lowe: lay off the Feaster is fat comments

    No.

He is the enemy. If you don’t get that, you don’t get sports fandom.

  36. hunter1909 says:

After valiantly leading by a two goals, the Flame’s going back to riding in pumpkin taxis.

    Lois Lowe:
This is fun. I like it when the Oilers are winning and playing well. It’s almost like I feel…what’s the opposite of shame?

Not sure it has been a long long while! But I like it.

  38. Lucinius says:

    BlacqueJacque:
What did Hall say about Whitney?

    HALL SCORES!Powerplay goal.

He said something along the lines of wanting Whitney to stay because he liked playing with him and that he had a lot of skill, made the transition easy on the forwards and that his game had turned around in the last few weeks.

  39. BlacqueJacque says:

They keep taking runs at our guys =/

Back on the power play I guess.

  40. striatic says:

fuzzy muppet: Well, I think this one’s in the bag.

now now, still lots of time left.

but i agree that it is up to Edmonton at this point. if they keep up the effort, they will win.

Who called 6-2 take your bow.

  53. Lowetide says:

    Nugent-Hopkins (Hall, Hemsky)

  54. rich says:

    Pour it on!

  55. striatic says:

what the hell is going on with the Flames?

just because you’re losing and your team is gutted doesn’t mean you need to turn into a bunch of goons.

even when Edmonton was at their worst, at least they weren’t stupid.

  56. Woodguy says:

So the powerplay is doing ok.

I prefer this way when you want to run someone’s show.

    s

  57. icecastles says:

I called 6-2 final after the Oilers’ first goal. I might have been overly-conservative.

Flames are going to do nothing but unravel for the rest of the game. They had some fire to start, but they are simply much too fragile at this point to push back. I’m remembering Edmonton’s record slide after Smytty got traded. And they were a much stronger team than Calgary’s current lineup.

  58. hunter1909 says:

    Woodguy’s losing a pile tonight.

  59. fuzzy muppet says:

Hall is going to win a Hart one day…

    Tyler who??

  60. BlacqueJacque says:

“Let’s go Oilers” chants in Calgary.

    Sweet, sweet music.

  61. PaperDesigner says:

Is Hall going to get the assist? Not near a TV, so I didn’t see the play. I am doing a scoring leaders watch on Hall, now.

Never mind, the assists to Hall and Hemsky are on TSN now.

  62. striatic says:

season goal differential down to -2.

still enough time to get to E ..

probably too much to ask for.

  63. maudite says:

What exactly does “Playing kitty by the barn door with it” mean?

  64. bookje says:

WG – The Oilers team that you predicted would lose tonight – They have left the building and the new Oilers team are willing themselves into a playoff spot.

  65. hunter1909 says:

The lion cubs are really enjoying themselves, as they toy with the little gazelle.

  66. icecastles says:

    striatic,

Damn you! I just checked the season +/-, came back to report, and saw you’d beaten me to it. 100% possible to be even tonight. Even in the +.

However as I said early in the game, Krueger is going to want his players to have something in the tank for tomorrow night, so might roll 4 lines evenly and play a very conservative third period. As much as I want to see a complete blowout, I’d like another win tomorrow even more. And that one’s going to be hard to get.

  67. Lucinius says:

I love watching this Oilers team.

  68. hunter1909 says:

This must have been what Boston were like when Orr + the rest first figured it all out and started going supernova.

  69. hunter1909 says:

Nobody is going to want to play these guys, nobody.

    Nobody.

  70. striatic says:

icecastles: As much as I want to see a complete blowout, I’d like another win tomorrow even more. And that one’s going to be hard to get.

    agreed.

best to roll the lines now and try to speed the game to its conclusion.

i think they have a chance to net a couple even if they do that though.

  71. Lowetide says:

    maudite:
What exactly does “Playing kitty by the barn door with it” mean?

Defensive hockey. Have no idea where it came from, it was a nightly mention when I was a kid. It is by the way “kitty bar the door.”

  72. Bar_Qu says:

This may be a first – 3 first overall picks all scoring in the game (correct me if I’m wrong).

I call it the Tambo Hat-trick.

  73. khildahl says:

I can’t count the number of times Hall has Nuge’d the puck off a Flame in the offensive zone tonight.

  74. godot10 says:

I think Feaster is going to trade one of his first round picks for Brad Richards, and another for Dan Boyle, and the third one for Vincent Lecavalier.

  75. Lucinius says:

Macdonald’s and Dubnyk’s save %s are slowly swapping. Dubnyk was at 0%.. now at 0.800 while Macdonald’s has fallen from almost 0.900 to 0.782.

  76. BlueNoteNorth says:

    icecastles,

Holding on to 8th place should be enough incentive.

  77. BlacqueJacque says:

As of right now, with 25 minutes remaining, Taylor Hall has 39 points in 33 games (counting this one.)

That’s almost 1.2ppg. Puts him sixth in the league in points per game and tied for 8th with Tavares and Kadri in total points.

  78. hunter1909 says:

This is beyond a mere bitch slapping. This is a changing of the guard of the first order. This game could easily end up 11-3.

These guys are fired up, ready to kill everyone they meet.

  79. Lucinius says:

You know Hemsky is phoning it in when he takes a slap shot on a partial breakaway.

  80. Lowetide says:

Yakupov is a sheer heart attack!

  81. striatic says:

Dubnyk is going to be the most important player down the stretch.

as electric as Hall has been, if Dubnyk isn’t lights out in april, the Oilers have no shot.

  82. Suntory Hanzo says:

  83. BlacqueJacque says:

Whoah-hohoho nice play by Petrell to avoid that check, get in the zone, backhand pass cross-ice to Yakupov who wrists it so hard it dribbles through MacDonald’s pads, though not across the line

Potter with a great defensive play, even if he got the penalty.

  84. khildahl says:

Yak’s shot goes right through goalies. Sick.

  85. Lucinius says:

    Yak! Almost! Almost!

Next time; put more on it!

  86. icecastles says:

Lowetide: Have no idea where it came from, it was a nightly mention when I was a kid. It is by the way “kitty bar the door.”

It is originally “katy, bar the door” from a poem by James Whitcomb Riley. 1894

When Lide married him – w’y, she had to jes dee-fy
The whole poppilation! – But she never bat’ an eye!
Her parents begged, and threatened – she must give him up – that he
Wuz jes “a common drunkard!” – And he wuz, appearantly.
Swore they’d chase him off the place
Ef he ever showed his face
Long after she’d eloped with him and married him fer shore!
When Lide married him, it wuz “Katy, bar the door!”

  87. VanOil says:

Is my math wonky or is Hall now tied for 8th in league scoring?

  89. Woodguy says:

Smarmy: Getting kicked is probably worse and I don’t know what you’re talking about in regards to what I was saying to the other poster.

Mason may be a worse goalie than Khabby, but that doesn’t make Khabby good.

  90. maudite says:

Lowetide: Defensive hockey. Have no idea where it came from, it was a nightly mention when I was a kid. It is by the way “kitty bar the door.”

Thanks for (clearing?) that up. Still makes no sense but I wasn’t sure I completely misheard the guy. Seemed too odd a statement.

    Hart territory

  98. BlacqueJacque says:

Poor Joey MacDonald. 5 goals more or less completely not his fault, and hit in the mask.

Another dozen or so games of this to look forward to. All for a piddly $550,000 and no more years on the contract.

  99. Lucinius says:

Some hectic moments tonight.. but god damn this Oilers team is more enjoyable to watch than anything we’ve seen since ’06. By a kilometer!

  100. hunter1909 says:

Feaster’s having new uniforms made, that he can blow up with air to make the Flames look bigger and scarier. He’s full of ideas, our Jay.

  101. PunjabiOil says:

Instead of pissing away two forth rounders on 4th liners, Tambellini should have used them to replace Horcoff when he got hurt for 17 games – and maybe the Oilers aren’t fighting for the playoffs.

This team has some very nice pieces going forward. They just need a better GM who can transition this team from the rebuild to contending stage.

Only if Feaster doesn’t return as GM. Otherwise he can look forward to a 3 yr 1.1per contract. Lucky bugger.

  103. Lucinius says:

Anaheim up 3-0 against Dallas after two periods, which should be enough. Puts Dallas 3 points behind us after tonight, most likely, with equal games played.

Minnesota sucking eggs and down 2-0 against San Jose half way through the second period (getting out-shot 14-7). Bastards. Knowing them they’ll then win both games against us.

  104. cabbiesmacker says:

Make sure to catch the Odd Couple remake starring Ryan Jones and Lennert Petrell. Ryan Smyth with a cameo role.

Jones is easily the worst player on the Oiler’s right now. Petrell isn’t much better but at least he knows how to skate, throw the odd hit, and kill some penalties.

  105. sliderule says:

  108. BlacqueJacque says:

Doesn’t Sportsnet have any dignity left?

  109. Lucinius says:

    cabbiesmacker,

Let’s be fair. Jones can be better than he is; he’s shown that in the past. Between the lockout, his injury and the hockey gods seemingly realizing how much he’s scored the past few years… he’s having a bad year. Normally he’d be good for a couple more goals by now, easily.

Jones is better than Petrell. Just.. right now its about even.

Concur. It’s the little things but Jones on the forecheck is always on the wrong side of the defender. I don’t know if he’s trying to cheat and catch them or what but they are turning and moving up easily every time and Jones is stuck in the corner trying to catch up.

*facepalm* Japanese proverb? Is anyone else watching this comedy show?

Ah fair enough but I was replying to the fact he said that none of the Oilers were moved because nobody would take them and based on what was traded and for what that is very likely untrue. I’d even bet money a team or two would have been interested in Khabby.

    Agreed.

The holes, obvious for a long time, were not expensive fixes.

The fix them perfectly is expensive.

If the Oilers miss the playoffs by 1 or 2 games, its a damn shame.

Even mesh over a broken window will keep the bugs out.

Not as good as a window.

Hell of a lot better than a gaping hole in your house.

  126. cabbiesmacker says:

    Lucinius:
    cabbiesmacker,

Let’s be fair. Jones can be better than he is; he’s shown that in the past. Between the lockout, his injury and the hockey gods seemingly realizing how much he’s scored the past few years… he’s having a bad year. Normally he’d be good for a couple more goals by now, easily.

Jones is better than Petrell. Just.. right now its about even.

Luc I think with the young talent starting to assert themselves Jones has just become very, very transparent. surround him with good players and the guys like the only dandelion in a really nice lawn.

  127. Woodguy says:

cabbiesmacker: His defining moment in tonight’s game was in the first period. He takes a 5 foot pass just outside the Oilers blueline then makes a 4 footer “back” inside the Oiler zone. Even my cat was shaking his head.

    That was priceless.

When Lander gets back to the big team I expect 28 to sit a lot.

  128. BlacqueJacque says:

    Woodguy,

Missing out on Adam Hall was really frustrating. Even if he did end up being worse than Belanger, he’d have been better than Vande Velde.

  129. Bar_Qu says:

Woodguy: I’m really enjoying the game.

What makes you think I’m not?

If hunter isn’t stirring the pot, he’s not really contributing. Posters here should take it as a supreme compliment when he takes note of you and sends a few barbs your way.

Its what I most appreciate about his posts.

I don’t like Eric Francis for any definable reason.

  130. Thor762 says:

    Woodguy,

I would guess that with Smithson centering the 4th line that 28 could end up sitting a lot if Smyth moves up with Horcoff and Yak.

Just dug up these gems from Calgary Puck:

“Both these teams are not very good”.
“This is a battle of two absolutely brutal teams”.
    TO…
“Sorry the Flames haven’t sucked enough to have 3 first overalls in a row”.
    Then Finally:
“When do the Flames get to touch the puck?”

  133. Lowetide says:

Yakupov is pushing now, his passes are bullets and he hunts the puck like the predator.

  134. VanOil says:

    Woodguy: That was priceless.
When Lander gets back to the big team I expect 28 to sit a lot.

You have more faith than me. I would just be happy if Jones and Smyth switch lines when we decide to ice 4 centers.

  135. BlacqueJacque says:

    hunter1909,

My favorites are the delusional posts, like this one:

“This rebuilding thing sure ain’t pretty.

Can’t wait til we get to see next season’s roster take to the ice. Should be some hope in the roster by then.”

Ohohohohoho those boys don’t know what they’re in for. At least Tambelowey were honest with themselves and us once it became we were in for Taylor or Tyler.

I don’t suppose my comments re the 1969 Boston Bruins contribute anything, since none of us including myself have any idea what the fuck I was saying.

  138. Lucinius says:

    cabbiesmacker,

Oh, don’t get me wrong; I’m not a fan of Jones. I’m merely saying he’s not as bad as his numbers would show this year.

He is bad defensively. He is a turn over machine (both ways). But he gets ugly goals we don’t normally get, often at the oddest times. Makes the Oilers a bit harder to defend against over-all. When he is on his game; which he isn’t this year.

He needed to be traded last year. Now we either need to let him walk for nothing or sign him cheap as a fill in on the fourth line in a rotation and see about trading him next deadline.

  141. BlacqueJacque says:

    Yakupov with the fisticuffs! Attaboy!

He didn’t take shit from other players when they slashed him earlier in the year (and slashed back, and ate the penalty, and didn’t get benched for it), and now he’s throwing fists.

  142. Lois Lowe says:

    BlacqueJacque:
    Woodguy,

Missing out on Adam Hall was really frustrating.Even if he did end up being worse than Belanger, he’d have been better than Vande Velde.

The reality is that whatever Adam Hall would have brought it wouldn’t have been good enough regardless of results. People would have complained about not being able to make a pitch for Dekeyser or not being able to upgrade at the deadline. Oiler fans are a tough crowd.

  143. hunter1909 says:

Horcoff with another shot on goal. He’s not only leading the team, but making scoring opportunities.

  144. Smarmy says:

Excuse the ignorance…but what is the ST in the scoring chances, beside Steve Tambo?

  146. BlacqueJacque says:

    Lois Lowe,

Hall could have been worth a win somewhere in that dark period. Not all the Oilers games then were blowouts.

  147. BlacqueJacque says:

    Special Teams.

  148. hunter1909 says:

Hey now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

The Oilers look great, but this is the Flames here. Flames that just traded their best forward, arguably their best two-way defenceman, and who for all intents and purposes have a wet cheesecloth in net.

Vancouver and especially Anaheim will be better indicators.

  163. BlacqueJacque says:

    EBERLE SCORES!

Hall doing so much work and I think Nuge recovers it at the blue.

    Whoever said 6-2, congratulations.

Taylor Hall now tied for 6th in NHL scoring (having jumped nine spots up!), having played at least two fewer games than anyone above him. Moved up to 5th in points-per-game.

    edit: what? Eberle unassisted?!

  164. LMHF#1 says:

Yes, that’s what I was thinking – just toying with the flames. Oil need the playoffs just for the challenge now

  168. supernova says:

    icecastles:
Oilers win 6-2. Later tonight, Feaster points to the 2-0 lead from early in the game as evidence that the Flames are right on the verge of winning these kinds of games and that there is no reason that next year, they won’t be back in the playoffs. This summer, they acquire Jonathan Cheechoo and Scott Gomex to play top-line minutes.

Looking like a genius right now ! Good on you

This is like watching the end of The Karate Kid for the first time.

  172. pboy says:

I think it was LT who trademarked “going supernova”. That almost perfectly describes what’s been happening for Hall. The beautiful thing is that RNH, MPS, Schultz the Younger, Ebs, Smid, Petry, Yak and Dubnyk are all playing great as well.

  173. Minister D- says:

Giddy in Cleveland. Forced to watch high school basketball on the bar TV after the Indians-Jays game. Felt too ashamed to ask them if they could please turn the flatscreen in the dark corner to the Oilers-Flames. ESPN ticker showing only trades, no scores. Hustled back to hotel to listen to CHED, microbrew rushing to head. Am I dreaming? Sole/soul possession of 8th place? Crushing the Flames? SUPERNOVAS?

Nuge backchecking like a boss, the game 6-2, 6 minutes left.

  178. Suntory Hanzo says:

    Yakupov fought? Crap missed it.

On another note…I had Seasons tickets 2nd row expansion section in 92 and 93. I recall a game against Vancouver when a fight broke out and the whistle didn’t blow. Simpson went end to end absolutely untouched as everyone froze and watched the fight and he scored.

    Anyone remember that?

  179. ASkoreyko says:

I know Whitney has a mouth on him, thats the second time he has basically been attacked on the ice this season.

Agree with lowetide using it, and what hall has been doing, as well as what’s possible with Yak, and RNH especially.

I use the “tag” as my daughter is named Nova. She is a pretty super in my eyes, so I gladly endorse the use in multiple ways.

  182. Smarmy says:

Ah they took away the assists on the Eberle goal?

  183. BlacqueJacque says:

    Smarmy,

Never gave them in the first place as far as I can tell, which is total BS =/

  184. Suntory Hanzo says:

So many great comments tonight…but if it ends 6-2, Icecastles wins.

That being said, the commentor said the Oilers have a puck on a string. The best thing about Jim Highston commentating is waiting for him to say “He’s got the puck on a string”, or “the fans call a penalty, but the refs don’t”.

  185. MrSmitty says:

Why would they take away the assists on Eberles goal Nuge and Hall should have assists on it we had possession the whole time.

  198. SK Oiler Fan says:

  199. icecastles says:

Unlike the unreal luck run led by Gagner/Cogliano/Nilson in 08, this feels legitimate. not saying they will continue to score and win at this pace, but the wins are deserved and the talent as absolutely for rea.
