  1. striatic says:

    sure sure ..

but if you put a Loonie in him, does a Coke come out?

  2. Destroyko says:

Hopefully he will become…Belov-ed…to the fan base…

Seriously though, Pronman says he can play:

    Corey Pronman ‏@coreypronman 3m
I think he can play next year. RT @destroyko: @coreypronman Is Belov likely to provide NHL play above replacement level next year, or should this be viewed as an AHL hire & depth option?

Could be bad news for someone at the end of the roster. Potter maybe. Similar size and possibly skillset. May also mean no Fistric re-signing, and/or Klefbom starting in the A (good).

  3. FrankenOil says:

    Jason Gregor ‏@JasonGregor 8m
Quick report on Belov. RT @dchesnokov: @JasonGregor pretty established. Should be able to fight for a spot right away (similar to Emelin).

  4. LMHF#1 says:

The raid of Russia begins! (I hope)

  5. FrankenOil says:

Also, with Regher re-upping in LA (2yrs / 6 Million), I would assume that makes Willie Mitchell expendable. Maybe a fit for the Oilers?

  6. godot10 says:

Hopefully, the guys who found Smith, Staios, Hejda, and Gresbeshkov lying around on the edges of NHL and European rosters have returned from a decade long slumber.

  7. striatic says:

This Fella plus drafting Zadorov would certainly make for a statement off-season on D.

  8. Rondo says:

    striatic,

Oilers would take Darnell Nurse before Zadorov

  9. Chunklets says:

Belov last season was one of the top offensive defensemen in the KHL, 7th among d-men in ppg (46 gp, 9-17-26, .565). He also went +19 on a team that was +28 overall. Now, that does follow on the heels of a 2011-12 season in which he had a whopping no goals and 6 assists in 50 games and got punted from the Gagarin Cup finals for PED use, but it’s still encouraging. He’s also been a regular choice for the Russian national team, which is probably a good sign overall.

A good signing, I think, and all the more exciting because it came pretty much out of left field!

  10. OilClog says:

Could we get Grigs out of Buffalo? Pick that freight train at #7 and ice a 72′ series between our top two lines? Games within the games! most fun.

This kind of signing leads me to believe there is no way Nick Schultz is back next season.

  11. striatic says:

    Rondo,

i don’t think Nurse is available at 7.

  12. Kitchener says:

    1) Fistric’s contract demands just decreased.

    2) Yak has a Russian pal again.

    3) Perfect delivery by STRIATIC ( … the Loonie)

  13. Kris11 says:

    Perfect picture LT,

Mr. Forward, thereis no puck which you possess that I cannot take away.

  14. Oiler_Kiwi says:

Interesting tweets from Bob McKenzie: -

Paul Maurice reportedly interviewed with Oilers this week and former VAN asst Rick Bowness is believed to be type teams looking at.

Count EDM & TB as two teams in market to bolster their coaching staffs with a veteran presence to assist Krueger and Cooper respectively.

Good topic for tomorrow’a show Lowetide?

  15. Hall Awaits says:

Great signing! Love the Russians and this should rightfully put young master Klefbom in the AHL next season to start.

  16. Rondo says:

    striatic,

You could be right, I guess Carolina is the team that might take him. My best guess today is

    Col- SJ
    Fl- NM
    TB- JD
    Nash – AB
    Car- DN or VN

  17. striatic says:

so what do we have now?

    Smid, Petry
    Schultz, J. Schultz
    Belnov, Potter

need an upgrade on Potter and an upgrade on Schultz Sr.

  18. bookje says:

This is a good move, Someguy has a pretty good record in the Khl and is exactly the type of signing that Steve Tambellini failed to make in his tenure.

  19. DBO says:

So some reporst say Belov could be a top 4 (# 1 in the KHL) and apparently he has a shot at the Olympic team (played big minutes in the world championships).

NAME Team GP G A PTS +/- PPG SHG GWG PIM SHOTS
    Anton Belov RUS 8 1 3 4 8 0 0 0 4 9

    Smid – Petry
    Belov-Shultz
    Shultz-Potter

As it stands right now. an upgrade on 1 LD and moving out Shultz the elder seems likely. And hopefully a vet upgrade on Potter, with Potter as our # 7 D, with the Bom starting in the minors (he has not played a lot the last few years and needs some games consistently before he earns a spot)

And team 1260 has a russian reporter (Chesnokov) on next. Compares Belov to Emelin.

  20. striatic says:

    Hall Awaits,

Barring an N. Schultz trade, which would be unwise unless another D comes back, i can’t see Klefbom playing NHL minutes next year.

at least, i don’t want to see him playing NHL minutes next year.

  21. Mr DeBakey says:

Belov replaces Planteubert in the Club’s hierarchy, I believe.

The KHLer who caught my attention is Czech Marek Troncinsky
    http://en.khl.ru/players/18955/

    Not as big as Belov.
He nearly was on the Czech World’s team.
An NHLer bumped him at the last minute.
But, he’s signed for another year.

  22. striatic says:

DBO: So some reporst say Belov could be a top 4 (# 1 in the KHL) and apparently he has a shot at the Olympic team (played big minutes in the world championships).

    that sounds wildly optimistic.

even if it is true, it isn’t something to plan defensive pairings and further acquisitions around.

  23. Halfwise says:

Good size, and is reported to play hockey with some success. This can not be a bad thing, as long as Tulupov does not scrimmage against him.

  24. DBO says:

    striatic,

He didn’t sign to play AHL. he is up for sure. As for planning pairings and future acquisitions, what the hell else do we have to do :)

  25. dessert1111 says:

    DBO:
So some reporst say Belov could be a top 4 (# 1 in the KHL)

I’ve read that too, but I’ve read more saying that he is more of a bottom-pairing type. I think he replaces Whitney’s spot in the line-up, and he’s not broken, which is nice.

Does MacT have one more D acquisition in him, this time an NHL-establish top-4 type?

  26. voxwah says:

Wait a minute. Are they not suppose to dither a bit before signing “some guy”. Who does this MacTavish guy think he is making changes so fast. During the playoffs no less. Who improves their team during the playoffs.

Next thing Craig is going to tell us the world is round or something…Sheesh.

  27. FTO says:

Man this seems like a great move, if it doesn’t work out we didn’t spend a pick on him or anything. And if he does work out MacT looks like a genius. Sweet.

  28. namflashback says:

Lowe overheard saying . . . “Wow, we sure have a lot of Russians here!”

  29. Lois Lowe says:

BOLD MOVES! As a fan I demand BOLD MOVES!

  30. Marc says:

    Lois Lowe:
BOLD MOVES! As a fan I demand BOLD MOVES!

And poise. Don’t forget the poise.

  31. imjustsayin says:

Everywhere I look up this guys stats……he’s listed a 6’3″ and 185lbs. Not 6′ 4″ 215lbs !!!! Hardly the big hard hitter their making him out to be.

  32. misfit says:

FrankenOil: Also, with Regher re-upping in LA (2yrs / 6 Million), I would assume that makes Willie Mitchell expendable. Maybe a fit for the Oilers?

If he wasn’t 36 and injured, I’d be all for it.

  33. dulock says:

Hopefully this signals a shift to looking at skilled Russians and Europeans that other teams won’t touch. If I were them, I’d draft Russians heavily in rounds 5,6 and 7 as there are many good players that the knock is might not come over instead of drafting might not be able to play types. With the new CBA giving rights to European draftees for four years, it’s a pretty solid strategy.

  34. RickDeckard says:

    imjustsayin,

KHL site has him at 1.92M and 96 KG, which is 6’4″, 211 pounds.

  35. Kris11 says:

    “could improve his defensive game”

    He’ll fit right in.

  36. Kris11 says:

I am excited, but am remembering being similarly excited about the Petrell signing.

I am all for unheralded European players coming aboard, but am leary after the Petrell debaucle.

  37. striatic says:

DBO: He didn’t sign to play AHL. he is up for sure. As for planning pairings and future acquisitions, what the hell else do we have to do

he isn’t going to play in the AHL but that doesn’t mean you can automatically slot him in the top 4.

that’s a huge jump in terms of minutes.

  38. G Money says:

This signing is small but significant and makes me happy.

    Key points:

    - 6′ 4″, 219lbs!
    - >0.5ppg (26 in 46) in the second best league in the world
    - was +19
    - team finished first in the division
    - he was assistant (or alternate?) captain
    - good enough to play on the Russian WC team (meaning he’s considered elite at the Russian national level)
    - a bargain (entry level) contract

Elite Prospects summary: “A large defenseman, Belov is still an excellent skater. He can control the offensive game with his passing skills and hard shot. Could improve his defensive game.”

If he can make a pass, shoot the puck, and use both feet to skate, he’s automatically a huge upgrade on Whitney as 6D. Given what a black hole of GA that was last year, if he’s good enough to be a competent #6, we’ve already got a better team.
