OMARK WANTS NHL

Linus Omark is coming off a very successful season in Europe and once again making an effort to find NHL employment. After winning the scoring championship in the Swiss league, this report suggests the skilled winger’s #1 choice is the NHL.

Omark’s ridiculous skills were on display for one season–the year of the rookie in Edmonton (Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi, Omark up front) and he fared very well:

  1. Jordan Eberle 1.79
  2. Taylor Hall 1.78
  3. Linus Omark 1.78
  4. Magnus Paajarvi 1.36

And he also posted a reasonable Corsi-Rel:

10-11 correl

I believe there was more chaos than is shown in those numbers, but the fact remains that Omark (then 23) showed well enough to earn another chance. The following season, both he and Paajarvi were lost in the flood of rookies and he is now in Europe waiting for a new NHL home.

I bring this up because, with a new Oiler GM in town, everything old is new again. Omark’s agent says in the article that teams have shown interest in other leagues, but things are on hold until the Oilers make a move.

A long shot he returns, but perhaps a trade at the draft. It adds to what is going to be an interesting summer.

They do not throw away the rights of fun. But it’s hard to know what they say in their four walls, what they want for him. They are their secret, says Aronsson

    True dat.

1)It would seem there is no room at the inn for the would be saviour. Too many smallish players, not enough servicable grit and toughness. This becomes quite evident when you watch some of the playoff games where the refs don’t call anything. That LA-STL series underlines what a joke the officiating is in this league. Using the early season criteria, there are 5 or 6 penalties every two minutes. I don’t mind the hitting and rough stuff but the holding and interference is incredible.

It happened last year as well. The Oilers can either build a team that can at least feature a few players that can grind in out, or stay home.

    2) Is the Linus any better than Rajala?

3)Omark’s skills were actually on display for 2 seasons. The second his RELCORSI was -10.5. It was only 14 games, but they still count.

Trade his rights and move on.

That second season was a lot about getting moved around, wasn’t much of an opportunity imo, but as you say it was part of the resume.

I’d move on, myself. Omark is an older player now, and he’ll want to play a significant role (or at least have a chance to) on an NHL team. Teams who couldn’t score on the PP (Wpg, Bos, etc) might have interest and of course there’s always the Islanders and Calgary.

As for Rajala, he’s young and emerging. I have no idea if he’ll be better than Omark, but he’s forcing the issue and has earned the opportunity.

Part of a trade for Bogosian or big Buff would be nice.

  4. Hammers says:

Omark much like Magnus got lost in the shuffle by both Tambellini & Renney .A tough decision but my guess is he plays in the NHL . Just shows that sport can be timing and a little bit of luck . Barons move on and some of the “D” proving there worth . Marachin , Davidson & Fedun plu new Nordic line .McT still has lots of options and decisions

Yay, a “trade Omark for X” thread!

The way the Oilers inexplicably soured this player means that every GM knows he’ll never play for us again, so even though he’s a valuable asset, we’ll get $.25 on the dollar for him.

    Thanks Tambo, et al!

  6. RexLibris says:

Tell Feaster he’s the best player not in the NHL and trade him for Brossoit.

  7. Lowetide says:

    Ha, Rex. That’s the ticket!

Things I would love to see

    2013-2014 4th line
    The midget line.
    Arcobello, Rajala, Omark

Watch Spectors and Stauffers head explode and make “getting show run comments”.

Watch those 3 eat up the Tom Sesitos and Colton Gillies of the league. We would get 4-6 minutes a night when the opposing coach wants to have a 4th line gentlemens agreement in line matching that the Oilers would have a clear advantage.

Would be fun watching Brian McGratton take hooking, roughing penalties against these guys. Then here comes the kids on the PP!

At this point I’d be happy of they traded him to get back the 4th rounder Tambo wasted on Smithson

  10. Rondo says:

What would happen if we want to trade up in the draft adding Omark may help a little 37th pick + Omark and maybe 50 something pick moves Oilers up a few spots, if there is a player they want.

  11. Henry says:

For what it’s worth when MacT was coaching team Canada at the world championships after he ‘quit’ the oilers he lauded Omark. The quote was along the lines of “The Oilers are going to love him. He has all kinds of jam!”

Maybe Omark gets his second opinion with the new regime. Wonder what Krueger thought of him.

You know, based on MacT’s pressers… this could happen:

hes wants the top 6 to get bigger & tougher.
He wants the bottom 6 to have players who will be more than non-factors at best. Scoring sure as hell makes a big difference, and was one of the key reasons the Oilers were losing games – the bottom 6 brought not enough.

I’d rather find places for both he and Rajala in the bottom 6 or as add-in players for the best player in the trade, than tradeing them for picks outside the top 100. We already know they have the talent to play in the NHL and they have cheap contracts, so as a baseline, they should be worth more.

  13. Captain Obvious says:

I’ve been a huge fan of Omark. However:

    1) I believe he was a healthy scratch for game seven of his team’s last playoff series with his coach saying earlier in the series something like: “I don’t care how many leagues he leads in scoring.”
    2) He hasn’t been chosen for the Swedish World Championship team two years in a row.
    3) Fair or not, he doesn’t have a good reputation in the NHL.

At this point I’d be surprised if he ever got another chance in the NHL. The NHL is a closed club where decisions are made based on who you know and what people think of you. It’s only a meritocracy if your talent outshines everyone else. I think Omark is an NHL quality player but his talent doesn’t outshine the rest.

Omark: stats with players near 5% of too +
His CF% with players under control by team.
    Paajarvi 59.3%
    Horcoff 57.5%
    Harti 51.0%
    Gagner 48.2%
    Smyth 45.8%
    Belanger 45.2%
    Hemsky 42.5%

    No longer on team
    Cogliano 53.8%
    Fraser 53.1
    Brule 51.55
    Penner 50%
    Reddox 46.7%
    0,Mara 33.3%

    Who needs a second opinion.
