LOUD NOISES 5: TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT

This will very likely be the biggest day of free agent procurement in Oilers history. MacT has all day and an owner who is ready to take it to the limit.

Oilers have 16 men signed, $21M in walking around money and once they sign Gagner and Paajarvi those numbers probably go to 18 and $14M. That means the Edmonton Oilers have $14 million dollars (pinky finger at mouth) to spend on 5 guys.

FORWARDS

  1. Taylor Hall 6M
  2. Jordan Eberle 6M
  3. Ales Hemsky 5M
  4. Sam Gagner 5M (est)
  5. RNH 3.775M
  6. Nail Yakupov 3.775M
  7. Ryan Smyth 2.25M
  8. Magnus Paajarvi 1.7M (est)
  9. Anton Lander 900k
  10. Mike Brown 737k

Oilers need a lot, including a 2line winger and a complete set of centermen, depending on the plan for Gagner. Nuge will be back at some point early in the season, but that’s a position badly in need of repair. Names we know are in play include David Clarkson and Clarke MacArthur among wingers, and really crickets for now about centermen. I’ll have some thoughts on that below.

DEFENSE

  1. Justin Schultz 3.775M
  2. Ladislav Smid 3.5M
  3. Nick Schultz 3.5M
  4. Jeff Petry 1.75M
  5. Anton Belov 1.525M
  6. Philip Larsen 1.025M
  7. Corey Potter 775k

A full deck, and with Oscar Klefbom still pushing you could argue the Oilers are done (they have added two pieces to the puzzle). However, the names of potential blue coming in are abundant, suggesting someone may be heading out too. Braydon Coburn, Andrew Ference, Mike Komisarek and Paul Ranger have all been mentioned as possibles.

GOAL

  1. Devan Dubnyk 3.5M

There are still players to offload (Hemsky, a defender) and of course plenty to add. I think the Oilers will be active in both free agent signings and in trades over the weekend and into next week. Let’s take one final look at the list.

 MACT’S LIST

  1. Top 4 defender
  2. Sign Sam Gagner to a multi-year deal that has begins with a number in the 4′s
  3. Get Paajarvi signed and then find a role that suits him (suspect it’s 3line).
  4. NHL goalie
  5. Find a 2line L who can complement Gagner-Yakupov with puck retrieval, blocking out the sun, etc
  6. Find a 3line R
  7. Find a 3line C
  8. Find a 4line C
  9. Deal Hemsky for immediate help (even if its a checker).
  10. Deal Horcoff or slot him into the 3line job for which he is actually ideal. Continued to improve D depth.
  11. Decide on Lander/Belanger or other for 13F. Lander it is!
  12. Better blue depth (MacT has done this with Belov and Larsen, plus Klefbom/Fedun/Marincin)
  13. AHL #1/NHL #3 goalie
  14. Sign Paul Ranger

The things I have read/am hearing look like this:

  1. Strong possibility David Clarkson is an Oiler later today
  2. Strong possibility Andrew Ference is an Oiler later today
  3. Strong possibility Ales Hemsky ends up in Ottawa or Detroit, possibly this weekend
  4. Ilya Bryzgalov may sign with the Oilers.
  5. Mike Komisarek is a person of interest for the Oilers.
  6. The Oilers and Flyers may still have a deal to make.
  7. Clark MacArthur and Viktor Stalberg are players of note.
  8. I don’t have a single item to pass along about a specific center.
  9. I believe they might put in a waiver claim on Grabovski. Cost is so dear, but he’s a perfect fit.

My list of 15 for the Oilers is here and does include the names Clarkson, Bryzgalov, MacArthur and Stalberg. I do like the idea of grabbing Grabovski although the cap hit is insane. Why? Center goes from a weakness to a possible strength in a heartbeat–play this guy with skill and he’ll cover the bet. Interesting day, please remember the world won’t end when you find out they have overpaid Clarkson. I’m not going to be moderating the blog today so best behaviour please, and you’re all on the honor system (and that includes you, DSF–you’re wide open to start the day).

THE LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

bladerunner

I’ll be starting my day at around 8:45 with Will Fraser on the morning show and then the LD/LT will hit at 10 on Team 1260. This is going to be a very fluid day so we’ll be adding/subtracting as things roll along. Scheduled to appear:

10-1260 for comments and questions, @Lowetide on twitter. Here we go!!!!!

Bag of Pucks: This isn’t the Khabibulin contract.

Definitely not at Bulineque defcon levels.

  2. Lucinius says:

Maybe we gave Ference the term and dollars because he and his wife are from here.

You know. The reverse of a hometown discount.

  3. Bag of Pucks says:

    RMGS:
Komisarek for one year at $700,000 – same player as Ference?

    No

  4. Lucinius says:

    RMGS,

Not even close, imo. Ference is much better than Komisarek.

  5. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    Магия¹º: pic.twitter.com/TSQ8ctFdV2

that almost makes it worth while.

Still much rather have Ranger and Colborn

  6. striatic says:

    Boyd Gordon, 3 years.

    yes!

  7. Lucinius says:

    Ribiero to Phoenix… interesting.

  8. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Griess and Emery sign for pennies on short term. Gs aren’t getting money this season.

    Know your market MacT.

I fully expect to hear MacT sign Labarbera for 5 years at 3.5 and Bryz at 3 years for 4.2. because oilers.

    LOUD NOISES AT HIGH NOON

Oilers have agreed to terms with goaltender Jason Labarbara on a 1-year deal.

    Edmonton Oilers ‏@EdmontonOilers 1m
#Oilers have agreed to terms with centre Boyd Gordon on a 3-year deal.

    Edmonton Oilers ‏@EdmontonOilers 9m
#Oilers have agreed to terms on a four-year contract with defenceman Andrew Ference

Depending on the number would have liked 1 more year from JL. Emery was only going for 1 year into a high profile market.

Duthie says Boyd Gordon done- Solid!

  11. striatic says:

    Магия¹º,

so far this is a good day, overall.

Boyd Gordon for 3 years is a great signing.

  12. Bag of Pucks says:

    It’s the summer of MacT : )

  13. Lucinius says:

Really curious about the money amounts on Gordon and Labarbera (god damnit.. I always spell his name as Labrabra). Overpay on Ference becomes less nut-punching if you get them cheap.

Waiting on terms for Gordon and LaBarbera, but both are excellent roster additions.

  16. uni says:

Well Gordon for 3 years and LaBabera for 1 year are good at least. Still waiting for the price tags though.

  17. Bag of Pucks says:

Alfredsson getting $5.5mil from the Wings is a shocker. Somewhere Iginla and his agent are smiling.

Still waiting for the nutpunch to the leafs if they go long and high on Clarkson and the Oil pick up their buyout on better terms.

    mc79hockey ‏@mc79hockey Boyd Gordon had a 52% Corsi% with a 32.6% ZoneStart. Wow.

given the term, i don’t think the price tags are a big deal.

Woodguy, I think we can now accept that MacT is not really interested in advanced stats and greatly values character, leadership, hard work ethic, and intangibles above everything else.It makes sense, it was how he coached.

Long Haired Feaky Sideburned People need not apply.

    Looks right.

He won’t touch Grabo now. even though he’s a perfect fit. Also probably what ACTUALLY tipped the scales with Nurse.

TSN is basically having a woody on this Ference deal. Johnson actually said: “ference always plays on winning teams”

These people must be handed a grab-bag of useless sound-almost-plausible arguments every morning with their coffee.

    Terrific season

  22. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Bag of Pucks: This isn’t the Khabibulin contract. $3.25mil and 4 years is a very reasonable deal for a FA D man of this calibre. If you’re going to balk at these numbers, you’re basically saying you want Oil mgmt to sit on the sidelines all day today and build exclusively through the draft or trades. This is going to be a day for overpays. Fortunately it’s also a day for the team filling obvious needs.

I don’t necessarily disagree that against UFA deals it isn’t terrible. but that is the point… trades are a better option. Coburn is a better option… hell some of the waiver guys are probably better options: Gilbert, Hunwick, Blum, et.c

  23. Магия¹º says:

For those too young too have watched them, 79 born AF is an example here of what Oil Fans looked like after those 80s games:

  24. Lucinius says:

For Ference I don’t see him getting less than what he got, regardless of where he went. He has too many things GMs love (irrationally, but whatever). Bad signing but.. if that’s the worst signing of MacT’s era.. I’ll take it in a heart beat.

  25. uni says:

Romulus Apotheosis: These people must be handed a grab-bag of useless sound-almost-plausible arguments every morning with their coffee.

I believe they have a dictionary much like the AP. You are only allowed to use these cliched terms and nothing else.

  26. Romulus Apotheosis says:

uni: Can we all just get back to talking about pretty good movies with sci-fi elements instead of trying to categorize them and hammering out definitions of terms? Oh and Jennifer Connelly, let’s not forget about her.

    Cool.

Beautiful Mind was a terrible movie that had a shitty hollywood version of what mental illness and genius look like and how they relate.

It was fiction about a scientist. get it? (crappy joke! yah!)

  27. Lucinius says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

That assumes Cobourn was able to be got; Holmgren didn’t want to part with him and was likely asking for too much in return. Also assumes Gilbert wanted to come back; he asked out, why would it do anyone good to bring him back?

Blum I was never a fan of, personally. Over-rated, imo. Hunwick I just know nothing about. But the Oilers wanted an older defenseman with experience.

  28. Ribs says:

    Lucinius:
    Ribs,

Because he’s got character, playoff experience and is a ‘saw him good recently’ type player from the playoffs. I watched every Bruin game and Ference played pretty well.

I don’t like the deal, as I said, and would rather they didn’t sign him but if they’re going to do another Khabbi-like contract on a player.. I think its about as ‘least bad’ of a choice out there. Stupid move, but I can see why they did it, even if the reasons for it are also at least slightly moronic (I’m being optimistic in that phrasing, I know).

So shorthand is “I understand it=They are morons”. Fair enough. Haha.

  29. Lucinius says:

    Ribs,

More like general stupidity of GMs drove the price up and MacT barely had time to get the lube out.

  30. Lucinius says:

Ribiero at 5.5 mil average.. Clowe at 4.85 average.. Horton 5.3 average. Wow.

Also, looks like MacArthur goes to Ottawa.

  31. Lucinius says:

And Scuderi takes a discount to go to the Pens.

  32. striatic says:

i’m rather surprised and disappointed the Oilers seem to be missing out on Clarke MacArthur.

solid stats, fills a clear need at LW, local guy, lives here off-season.

was there a lack of interest from the team? player?

  33. Lucinius says:

    striatic,

Player, I think. A lot of players love to go into the East due to travel.

  34. Romulus Apotheosis says:

I’d rather just keep N. Schultz than.

Gilbert never said he wanted out. At least that was confirmed. It’s a well worn rumor… but who knows… plus being bought out can change your opinion of things.

Blum, Hunwick are all freebies basically… IMO a move has to beat your current roster in some way. Not sure how Ference beats N. Schultz who is out next year.

Coburn… not sure if he would shake loose or not. but he’s the right target. quality, young.

Ference is fucking 34!!! 4 years is crazy for a guy with his milage.

  35. justDOit says:

Here’s hoping that Ference’s next four years are less human than human, and more replicant.

  36. Lucinius says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

Don’t think N. Schultz quite has the off-ice aspects the Oilers wanted. No idea, of course. But Ference is highly regarded int he league and that drives the cost and term up.

Not a deal I’d have made.. but it makes sense in the bizarro land that is free agency with NHL GMs.

  37. Lucinius says:

MacArthur in Ottawa for 2×3.25 million.

Wanted to stay out East, I wager.

They made him an A. They all seemed to like the guy.

Not sure N. Schultz is a “character” down-step from Ference… and the fact that we are arguing about it at all is crazy.

#Oilers have agreed to terms with forward Jesse Joensuu on a two-year deal.

  41. Lucinius says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

    I’m not disagreeing with you.

I’m mainly just playing devil’s advocate and struggling to find the why’s.

Big one is, I believe, is the price on Ference got driven up by interest by a number of GMs. Ference is just the kind of player GMs love to sign for all the reasons TSn’s gab club went through when it was announced. He was going to get this kind of money. Oilers probably gave him extra term to lure him here.

Hell, maybe they find out he sucks and use the buyout on him next year because they managed to save it by not having to use it on Horcoff.

Romulus Apotheosis: Beautiful Mind was a terrible movie that had a shitty hollywood version of what mental illness and genius look like and how they relate.

Agreed. In actuality his wife left him and moved to Europe with the family. It wasn’t till many years later after he’d gone through many cracks in the mental health care system that she came back and took him in out of pity since he was homeless and destitute at that point. They only remarried when they were both in advanced age.

  43. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    Lucinius,

the counter argument is to simply follow MacT’s own advice… stay away from UFA deals. why take the prize of “out bidding teams for a bad deal”?

    striatic,

MacArthur was rumored to only be interested in Eastern teams. He would have stayed in Toronto for term and 3 million I’d wager. Ottawa was the next best thing and they got excellent value at 3.25m x 2.
