Everything about it is awful. The term, the dollars, the player.

  2. russ99 says:

Term and dollars are an overpay, but that’s FA.

We need a leader like Ference to get the many young/rookie defensemen that will be on the roster the next few years to the next level.

  3. Ben says:

    N. Schultz must be going….

  4. raventalon40 says:

A tad more term and $$ than I was expecting, but that’s the free market baby. Trade Nick Schultz? I feel as if his talents are redundant now.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: EDM is working hard to sign Boyd Gordon.

    @TSNRyanRishaug: All players clear waivers

No Grabovski claim? That would have made Gagner sign his deal in a hurry, I tell you that much!

  5. spoiler says:

He must have something going for him if Julien was willing to play him 24 mins anight during the playoffs as a 34 yr old. But what ever that something is, the stats don’t show it.

  6. Woodguy says:

    Ference:

    Corsi QC
    12/13 4/7
    11/12 5/7
    10/11 5/6

    Relative Corsi
    12/13 7/7
    11/12 7/7
    10/11 4/6

    Zone Start
    12/13 4/7
    11/12 4/7
    10/11 3/6

So basically has played mostly 3rd and some 2nd pairing and got beaten soundly.

34 years old and ability in steep decline

Not a good deal at all.

    Also,

    Yay! Oilers got Boyd Gordon!!

    I like that one.

  7. Woodguy says:

Boyd Gordon on 3 year deal.

    Labarbera on 1 year deal.

  8. bookje says:

WG – The only think I can think of is that he is there to provide leadership in the defence. I hope they don’t flush N.Schultz for Ference because Schultz is a better defenseman.

  9. Lewis Grant says:

Ference seems like the closest possible comparable to Nick Schultz. 2nd/3rd pairing, character guy, tough as nails. Except that Ference is four years older. Early thirties is when these types of d-men tend to decline. We’re now paying him from age 34 to 38.

    I like defensive depth. I like actual NHL players. I don’t like paying $3.25M when he’s 38.

  10. Lewis Grant says:

We do realize that, for all his intangibles, Boyd Gordon has scored at 0.25 PPG throughout his career, right? Right?

  11. hags9k says:

Saw him good just took math out behind the wood shed on the Ference signing…

  12. Dominoiler says:

Booo… Ference is a dirt ball rat.. can anyone remember better than I, who he ‘accidentally’ blindsided w his shoulder a season or two ago?

  13. bookje says:

    Ben:
    N. Schultz must be going….

Schultz is a much better defenseman.

Bingo. why not just keep N. Schultz?

also, he’s got to be leaving now, right?

    Not a scorer.

PHX has 52% of the shot attempts with him on the ice last year, even though Gordon only had 32% of his face offs in the ozone.

    Unreal stat.

    Maholtra treatment and still outshoots.

    Great signing.

At end of contract he’ll be Staios’s retirement age. Staois last 3 years were part time with Flames and Isles.

  17. Магия¹º says:

    mc79hockey ‏@mc79hockey No problem with these. RT @TSNBobMcKenzie Boyd Gordon’s deal with EDM is 3 x $3M and LaBarbera’s is 1 x $1M.

Intangibles? Shot differential and zoneshift are suddenly intangible?

  19. denny33 says:

    Ference:

We are so desperate for a 3rd pairing Defenceman – ( think we only had 5 or 6 of those type guys last year – it is almost hard to believe…

    Wow.

Mid 30′s – with footspeed that is SURE to get quicker next year….right?

  20. Lewis Grant says:

    “Steve Smith”,

Well, OK, I was a little careless. But I don’t think we should expect even Horcovian offensive production out of Gordon.

PHX has 52% of the shot attempts with him on the ice last year, even though Gordon only had 32% of his face offs in the ozone.

Yeah, it is impressive. Clearly the guy can play a defensive game. Good. But are we OK with $3M for only that? A lot of people were concerned about paying Smid $4M – a defenseman, for crying out loud – because of his lack of offense. Let’s just remember that next February when we’re not getting offensive production from our 3 line.
