TAYLOR HALL: HEY, YOU’RE AN ALL-STAR!!

Taylor Hall earned the first major award of his young career yesterday, and in doing so sent a clear message to the NHL: Taylor Hall has arrived. The 2nd All-Star nod is nothing to joke about, that’s a clear indication of a bright and promising future. It’s also confirmation for the Oilers ownership and management, in that they are heading in the right direction. Taylor Hall is the first Oiler in 23 years to have won this award–what an exceptional moment in club history.

I’m thrilled for the young man, may even buy the hockey card!

 MACT’S LIST

  1. Top 4 defender (Braydon Coburn???)
  2. Sign Sam Gagner to a multi-year deal that has begins with a number in the 4′s
  3. Get Paajarvi signed and then find a role that suits him (suspect it’s 3line).
  4. NHL goalie
  5. Find a 2line L who can complement Gagner-Yakupov with puck retrieval, blocking out the sun, etc
  6. Find a 3line R
  7. Find a 3line C
  8. Find a 4line C
  9. Deal Hemsky for immediate help (even if its a checker).
  10. Deal Horcoff or slot him into the 3line job for which he is actually ideal.
  11. Decide on Lander/Belanger or other for 13F (and 14F if they go with 7D).
  12. Better blue depth (MacT has done this with Belov, plus Klefbom/Fedun/Marincin)
  13. AHL #1/NHL #3 goalie
  14. Sign Paul Ranger

So far this season, MacTavish hasn’t done a lot to address the NHL team’s roster

  1. Endorsed Oscar Klefbom as a legit (but not certain) top 6D option in the fall
  2. Signed Anton Belov as an NHL option
  3. Allowed Hartikainen to bolt for Russia
  4. Signed C Mark Arcobello to a 2-way deal
  5. Added a coach (Eakins) and a new assistant (Acton)
  6. Excited the masses

There are rumblings here and there this morning about what might be happening. Nothing major, mind you, nothing as strong as the Schneider trade talk or Coburn discussions–we know those happened–but some pretty clear indications that things are progressing.

rimer

I had Clarkson #2 on my list of 15 possible free agent signings posted yesterday, but didn’t think the Oilers would get him (still don’t believe they will). The Oilers have to be careful in free agency because they could blow a lot of money on one player and that’s not terribly wise. This isn’t a team about to win Stanley if they can find just one more piece to the puzzle–they have a bunch of work to do. Still, interesting to see MacT jump into the deep end and he clearly identified the priorities (Clarkson is the top LW option with size and skill) for a major need this summer. Combined with the pursuit of Coburn and Schneider, it appears we have our ‘top priorities’ list in hand.

panach

I wonder if the Oilers will be part of that circus? It could happen, the Flyers may be looking for some cap relief a few hours into free agency and perhaps Coburn will be an option at a lesser asset price because of it.

FETCHING

aagif

It always takes a little time to suss through a draft, and in doing so this year I’ve stumbled upon some cool things about Jackson Houcke. Kirk Luedeke from Redline was on the show yesterday and mentioned RR (notorious hard markers) had Houck at #40–mid second round saying “both our WHL scouts have fallen in love with his take-no-prisoners style and evolving offensive game.”

  • Redline cout Mark Staudinger: “Establishes himself down low and out front with a great understanding of how to separate players off the puck. Accurate heads up passer can find teammates off the cycle. Playing in a better scenario any other year he should be a Top 60 pick, yet could easily be available for the Bruins second pick in the third (round).”

THE LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

stanwyck

This should be a wild ride, with free agency a day away and trades/signings  happening at a rapid clip. I’m not certain how much we’ll be talking to guests and how much we’ll be reading the news in the next couple of days (lots of breaking hockey news) but it should be fun. Scheduled to appear:

Text to 10-1260 or @Lowetide_ on twitter, and you can dump questions here too. Hope you can tune in!! Maybe the lead story will be the Oilers claiminng Gilbert Gilbert.

striatic: to be fair, there is the question of contract term.

but i still hope they outright claim him.

I think a player like Grabo suffers universally from weird expectations and a lack of thoughtful analysis. I expect he’ll sail through waivers… just hope the Oil are smart enough to target him aggressively and pitch him a deal.

OilClog: Grabs between Gags and Yaks would be awesome!

who do you have playing RW there? Gagner or Yakupov?

  3. Lois Lowe says:

I really don’t see Grabo signing in Edmonton as an UFA, he’ll be able to choose from many many suitors and the Oilers are not the belle of the ball.

Grabovski had some pretty blistering remarks toward Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. Called him a “stupid coach” among other things.

    uh oh.

This trade is a curiosity. Dallas was supposedly one of the main trade targets for the Horcoff. That appears not to be the case anymore. I wonder if MacT has waited too long to try and get a deal that moves Horcoff out?

I won’t mind if he stays, to be clear, but MacT will lose a lot of credibility in the eyes of many if he doesn’t move Horcoff and Hemsky.

This kind of griping is heavily dependent upon win/loss records.

Quick Question – when was the last time a 17 year old lead the WHL in scoring?

The more I think about it – the more surprised I am very few in this group were disappointed the Oilers did not use 1 of their 2nd round picks on Nicholas Petan.

So many people argue against just size bias in here and as Bob Mackenzie said: There is no hole in this kids game. The only issue is his size.

I realize the last thing we need is another smaller scoring forward -but you cannot draft on need. Sometimes opportunities arise you cannot predict.

Some people had Petan going in the 1st round. Some as high as the teens.

Petan does not go until 43.

Head scout for Winnipeg was explaining they did not believe he would be around when they were due to pick. Mentioned some Western Scouts had him ranked in the 1st round. Winnipeg GM tries to trade up numerous times -thinking Petan would never make it to 43.

Obviously, we will have to wait at least 3 years….but man – lighting up a junior league at 17 -sold me.

Given that MacT used a formula rather than an onion to make his draft selections I have to believe that he has taken into consideration all the things that we talk about every day on this site.
    He knows what he wants!
He will have a Plan B
Nothing to worry about guys we are in good hands.

I know we are in a tougher division but a stronger D and a stronger bottom 6 is not a big ask
We have a good top 5 who will be a year more mature so not much to fix there.
The goaltending is fine (yes we need a back up)
Special teams are good to excellent.
All we need is a bit better on D and an attitude change via bottom 6 acquisitions and we can surely make the play offs.
    I am a believer ….until I am not

Isn’t that the general consensus here? (As much as there ever is one.)

    most certainly.

but the lack of tact might put some teams off of him.

i wonder if Eakins would lobby for claiming Grabovski. do they have any history?

Good. Maybe it will lower the price.

  14. Smarmy says:

    Claim Grabovski! Trade Gagner!

  15. striatic says:

“In March, 2008, after being a healthy scratch for a game against the Phoenix Coyotes, Grabovski left the Montreal Canadiens and flew to Los Angeles to consult with his agent. The incident prompted his trade to the Toronto Maple Leafs that summer.[7]

In January 2009, Grabovski was involved a scuffle with fellow Belarusian Sergei Kostitsyn during a game between the Maple Leafs and Canadiens. The two had been in a feud since Grabovski’s days with the Canadiens. Prior to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, the head of the Belarusian national hockey program had to intervene in order for the two players to be able to coexist on the same team.[7]

On February 19, 2010, Grabovski was arrested in Vancouver after getting involved in a street scuffle. He was out of the Maple Leafs lineup with a broken wrist at the time of the arrest and was in Vancouver attending the 2010 Winter Olympics. Court documents alleged that Dylan Richardson was punched in the face and knocked unconscious by Grabovski, who then assaulted Richardson’s wife by also punching her in the face.[8]

On February 9, 2013, Grabovski was accused of biting Max Pacioretty of the Montreal Canadiens during a scrum along the boards. The NHL conducted a telephone hearing with the players involved, but couldn’t determine conclusively if Grabovski had bitten Pacioretty.[9] However, on May 20, 2013, more than three months later, Grabovski admitted that he did in fact bite Pacioretty, stating in an interview “He was choking me and I bit him. Don’t stick your hands where you shouldn’t.”[10]”

Question: Prefer Briere at $4M cap hit or Hemsky at $5M cap hit?

    I take Hemsky any day.

When I ask myself why Montreal didn’t make it out the 1st round, I never come up with “Because they didn’t have enough Danny Briere” as the answer.

his character is an argument against a waiver claim, if it makes negotiating with him easier as a UFA.

feels like you shouldn’t pay full price for damaged goods.

I take comfort in knowing that Eakins likely has the inside track on any player (Grabovski) we might be tempted to take from the Leafs.

  20. Smarmy says:

Grabovski won’t sign with Edmonton as a UFA. I can’t know that for certain but I’m pretty sure.

His contract is also a good reason not to pick him up on waivers. 4 more years at $5.5M cap hit? You better be sure about a guy with that contract.

Also, it sounds like he’s the one damaging the goods, rather than being the damaged goods. Unless it’s his head you’re referring to!

  24. striatic says:

Romulus Apotheosis: how about this: Grabo-Yak-Gags?

i much prefer Yak at RW, so i’m not a fan of that since it means Gagner at LW .. has he ever played LW?

  25. OilClog says:

    striatic,

Gagner, Yak is too raw, too good on the right.. for the left side

Gagner will just have to adept..

Unless… Now, I know this may seem absurd.. Three Scoring lines.. Three. Is Eakins the man that can do this? Is MacT the GM that understands a coaches true pain.. of never scoring enough goals against the opposing coaches defensive schemes.. I don’t know.. but every hour the world is turning now.. Tomorrow.. Gagner could be in Washington for all I know.

  26. Romulus Apotheosis says:

striatic: i much prefer Yak at RW, so i’m not a fan of that since it means Gagner at LW .. has he ever played LW?

He shoots left though, right? so at RW is he always on his off-wing? is that typical?

at any rate, I’d love to get/keep those players and see where they all shake out.

  27. striatic says:

OilClog: Unless… Now, I know this may seem absurd.. Three Scoring lines.. Three.

it is doable, i think ..

    Stalberg-Horcoff-Gagner

    yes.

Ovechkin was similar last season, a left shooter playing RW.

it sorta worked for Ovi, and Yakupov has some similar qualities.

I think PRV and Stalberg/MacArthur might flip lines.

If the Oilers sign Mcarthur and claim Gabo and it’s only 2 million more then the Leafs sign Clarkson for I’m going to mock my brother in-law this weekend until he punches me in the face. (Bugging my sister in-law about the Canucks isn’t fun anymore)

  33. striatic says:

i’m pretty confident penciling MacArthur into the lineup, given the news that he’s in town and the fact that he’s an Alberta boy and was an Oilers fan growing up.

He seems like he’d be the perfect bang for your buck LWer to slot behind Hall.

  35. fifthcartel says:

He seems pretty off the radar too.

  36. Magnus says:

    A few thoughts:

    1. I’m crossing my fingers that MacArthur gets signed, and at an acceptable salary. I think he’d quickly become a fan favourite.

    2. Unless the team picks up Grabovski from waivers (and I don’t think they should, that contract is horrible), there’s very little chance that he signs withe Oil. I have to think a team like Detroit will go after him hard, specially if they lose Filppula.

    3. Hearing rumours that MacT is pursuing Clarkson makes me cringe. Sometimes I think the only thing stopping our GM from making stupid moves is the even greater stupidity of other GMs.

    4. When should we expect Mike Zigomanis to be introduced as a signing?

    5. Am I the only person who would prefer Maxim Lapierre over Boyd Gordon? Gordon doesn’t have enough offense to be a good 3rd line center and he’ll likely get paid too much to play a 4th line role. I think Lapierre will have less teams pursuing him, will be cheaper, and while not as good defensively, brings much more grit and physical play.

    6. Who’s this other Russian defenseman the team is supposedly signing? I doubt it’s Grebeshkov. He may have history here, but has not been impressive since leaving. Here’s hoping for Nikita Zaitsev.
