incredible… better depth option than either Finn could slot anywhere from 7 – 13 on the depth chart.

    Hilarious.

    Absolutely hilarious.

Does this mean we can take the “Omark trade rumours” out of drydock?

I may be out of practice, but let me see if I can still do this, ahem…”Omark and Musil to Philadelphia for Coburn and a 2nd round pick”. Wow, that was surprisingly easy! I almost forgot how much fun this could be.

    ;)

  5. Clarkenstein says:

Apologies LT… MacT should get back on the meds!! GroundHog day is alive and well in (once) mighty Oilville!! FFS!

They’re obviously making room for O’Mark.

  7. misfit says:

I like Omark, and if the choice was Omark or Rajala, I think they made the right choice. Not that they really needed to choose between the two. I mean, why not have both?

  8. Omark, The Return says:

[...] him like the thoroughbred he is – it doesn’t matter. Today he’s an Oiler! Hey, if Lowetide can post an Omark photo, so can [...]

  9. slopitch says:

48 GP,12 goals, 52 assists and 69 pts in the Swiss league last year. Not quite as good as Brunner but Omark is better then some of the guys MacT was referring to in LT’s post just hours ago.

We had a lot of one or two or zero goal scorers who were out there a really the best you could hope for was they were a non-negative factor

30 pts in 65 games is also not horrible. I wonder how many games it would take Petrell to score 30 pts.

Depth is good. Lord knows where our grit and size will come from though.

This MacT guy, just keeps confusing the masses. Very entertaining to say the least.. So Gordon could be playing between Linus and Ales.. Might be the perfect fit, win the draw skate straight towards the net don’t expect the puck unless it bounces off of you.. Guy could get 12-15 goals!

For the record I think Hartikainen and Omark are both better prospects for the NHL then Rajala. I am guessing most of you do too?

MacT endorses Krueger… then MacT fire Krueger.
MacT says he’s done… then MacT pulls the Perron trade.
MacT says the roster is ‘pretty much set’… then MacT signs Omark.

Remember… MacT telling the truth and MacT lying sound pretty close to the same thing. Also, MacT changes his mind. Crazy like a silver fox!

Any news on this? Did Omark get his one-way? Is it a two-way with a larger AHL component?

In fairness, that was over 2 and a half months apart! Consider all the hockey that was played in that time to change his mind!

  16. Jesse says:

Stauffer has tweeted that it’s a two-way contract. That is really surprising to me. MacT must be a master of persuasion.

    What a great day!

And not one tweet from O’Mark the whole two and half months!

  20. linkfromhyrule says:

ok, so have the oilers signed him for more depth, or is a trade in the works? Seems like we’re a bit out of the normal trading times but I guess it is still the off-season. A third line of omark-gordon-hemsky would be ok in my books. Faceoff guy to get the puck and pass to hemsky/omark. Only problem is, i’m not sure how those two (hemsky and omark) would fare on a shutdown defensive line

  21. rich says:

    Logan91,

Interesting thought. Nothing would surprise me. MacT is accumulating a lot of low risk contracts instead of the dumb 3 year deals that Tambellini did so he can give himself flexibility.

For months i have been wondering what the downside for either party looked like in doing this deal. It seemed like only upside scenarios all around. 35. mumbai max says:

    Cleary next

  36. Numenius says:

This fits nicely with the idea of moving Hall to C while Nuge recovers. Omark could fill in as a top 6 LW and once Nuge gets back, they can decide if they want to move him to the 3rd line or send him down. Beautiful.

  37. oilswell says:

Honestly thought this was a twist on the Pouliot jape.

I guess replacing Tambellini and the coaching staff couldn’t have hurt.

Odd move for the organization that historically built the team strictly by template. Could MacT be going all-in on the talent+puck movement?

  38. Big Dan says:

What’s so funny? The kid is talented and wants to play in the NHL. He wins battles along the boards, goes to the net, entertains the fans during shootouts, and will pot you 15 goals/ 30 points even from the 4th line. You can move him up and down the lineup as needed.

Yes, his defense needs work – we’ll see what Eakins can do with him. He is talented enough to fill in as the 2nd line LW until the Nuge comes back (I’m assuming Hall will play centre). If he impresses, he’ll help us during a pretty tough schedule the first month. Plus, he’ll have trade value.

If he still doesn’t have trade value, he offers us a much better option than Joensuu or R. Hamilton on the 4th line (who’ll be good callups from the farm or presbox once Hemsky or Smyth blows a tire).

And he and Lander are both Swedes right? If I’m not mistaken, Omark and PRV were good friends and had good chemistry so maybe the same thing will happen here.

MacT is smart enough to not give away a good player like Hemsky, Schultz, or Omark… just because some fans are clamoring for it. Wait until the time is right. God, it’s nice to actually have a GM who knows what he’s doing!

    Total low-risk, no-lose, no-brainer move. Love it.

A small minority of us were advocating this exact move….

Low risk play…for a guy that had a great year.

A semblance of logic has returned to the Oilers organization..

Agree with you – almost appears to be 3 scoring lines…

Just need a big centre from the draft next year and I think this org is steering in the right direction.

The organization really needs to fill the centre position from top to bottom.

  41. bookje says:

I hope its not to be traded – I think there is a player there and am very glad that MacT decided to address the waste of an asset.

Put him on the Top Line – pump him up with lots of points and then trade him if you don’t want him on your team. Don’t send him to rot in Europe.

  42. matt says:

    Numenius,

    [lightbulb over my head]

  43. matt says:

Given the Swedish newspaper story about a deal brewing with another NHL team, I expect a trade. I would have said one this week. Numenius’ post about how this works with Hall at centre makes me think that perhaps there’s a gentleman’s agreement between three parties, ie Omark chips in for a month and, if solid, gets traded. If shaky, sent down. Or, traded for less and sent down.

Yes! Eberle has suggested that he can play Centre. While Hall is still reluctant.

Great hockey IQ, amazing puck skills, and any player who can shoot low 70s over 18 holes should play center!

  50. LMHF#1 says:

I’m going to go back to a point I made a couple years ago about Omark – his toolkit lends itself well to becoming a strong defensive player. He’s great in the corners, works really hard, understands the game and protects the puck well. Perhaps Eakins will have a better head for that than Renney did.

  51. kinger says:

I wonder if he shaved his sideburns.

  52. Numenius says:

PerryK: Yes!Eberle has suggested that he can play Centre. While Hall is still reluctant.

If Eberle can do it at a high level, that would solve long term C depth problems in the top 6.

It doesn’t fit quite as well with the Omark signing, though, since he’s LW and so it makes more sense for Hall to switch.

  53. Hayek says:

This is the difference between MacT and Tambo. Tambo buries Souray, and pays him to play on another team. MacT recognizes talent and mends fences.

more seriously, i think the Oilers will play Omark, not trade him, at least for the first month of the season.

he fits in the slot opened up with the Hall [or apparently Eberle] shift to Centre.

after that, who knows. if he plays well i think you’ve got to trade him and turn him into a longer term asset, unless you .. ha .. sign him to an extension.

it is a two way deal, so no waivers.

he will be playing in OKC for next to nothing, unless he stays in the show or bolts to the KHL.

striatic: it is a two way deal, so no waivers.

According to this (http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2013/08/27/oh-mark-twitter-reacts-to-linus-omark-signing-with-edmonton-oilers/), he does have to clear waivers. So he’s hoping to make the team and if he gets sent down, hopes to get picked up by another team rather than go to the Barons.

A 2-way contract is about whether there are different salaries at the AHL and NHL levels. Waivers is a different thing and depends on several factors, including number of games in the NHL.

  63. russ99 says:

Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria, twitter/HF board meltdowns…

Never thought I’d see the day…

I hope Linus can turn things around and have a decent NHL career. Eakins quotes of getting to know each player holds some hope that the Oilers won’t assume he’s like everyone else and expect him to conform to some old school stereotype like last time.

  64. stevezie says:

Maybe they could also sign Brunner, have a murderous fourth line?

All seriousness aside it looks like they have too many NHL forwards… which is great! If this team is actually willing to burn a few hundred thousand dollars just to make sure they have depth and competition for the bottom two lines- who knew the defence was a template for the whole team?

Магия¹º: He needs that “I’ll most likely kill you in the morning” karma.

There’s a reference I can get behind. If he has Wesley’s work ethic he’s a lock.

i see. he’s 5 games over the limit. i didn’t think he had played that many games for the Oilers.

  66. Магия¹º says:

    striatic,

Either that, or a Hemsky trade is in the works.

  69. Gerta Rauss says:

I’m pretty sure Omark is waiver eligible under all circumstances. We counted down the “games played” criteria near the end of his last season with us, and we bemoaned the fact that he crossed the mark(ending his waiver exemption) only to have Renney sit him in the pressbox the final few games of that NHL season.

  70. bendelson says:

Interesting thread. I’m a little perplexed by all the calls for Omark to fill,a top6 role until RNH is ready to go… Woodguy already told us Hemsky will fill that role very successfully. Omark > Hemsky?
    Weird.

  71. Bar_Qu says:

Making room for Omark on this roster means more to the changing mentality of the management of this team than any other singular act so far.

OTOH, it is a perfect move to have put off until late August. It lets the player see what his value is relative to the rest of the league and avoids pigeon-holing the team by picking up a player early that may not be the best fit (there is still the possibility that Omark is a bad bet – though I hope not).

I am more hopeful about the Oilers than I have been since the last time a season was about to begin (kidding). This is a big confidence builder for a fan like me.

  72. Hammers says:

Eakins would remember Omark from the Barons games as well as Lander and could be behind this move . Maybe he wants a 4th line that can score and put some real pressure on for 5-6 minutes a game .Lander / Omark/ Joensuu new Nordic line .

  73. BlacqueJacque says:

See, now, if we were making a skill line for a 3rd line, like… I dunno, Omark-Arco-Rajala… this could work.

  74. FastOil says:

Refreshingly open minded move. Perfect for the stats crowd, like pulling the tongue out of Harvey’s head for the coke machine crowd.

I give 50-50 he stays. I don’t necessarily think he’s been signed to trade, it will depend on what happens with Hemsky.

Whatever you think about him, he is basically a no brainer for 3rd line skill with his tenacity on the puck if he’s kept and of course able to slide up. I would imagine his desire to listen and accept a role has been tempered by experience. Likely Eakins straight forward no BS style will work for him.

  75. linkfromhyrule says:

    Weird.

Well, I think the reasoning behind that is due to the fact that Omark is a LW. If Omark moves up into the top six nobody would have to play their off wing in the “hall moving to centre” scenario

  76. stevezie says:

    FastOil,

Actually Omark is something of a stats-crowd anomaly. He is loved, but his advanced stats are not good. I think the alternative media loves him just because so much of him spits in the face of the old-boys club. This typically means advanced stats, but not here. We’ve all just seen Omark good. Myself included.

  77. Kris11 says:

    I like.

With RNH, I’d try to creeate three aolid lines, two for tough opposition, one to kill super soft minutes.

    Hall-RNH-Yakupov
    Perron-Gordon-Hemsky
    Omark-Gagner-Eberle (super soft)
    Smyth-Lander(Or whoever)- Joensuu/Jonrs
    Brown

  78. justDOit says:

Olympic consideration is another reason for O! to sign a cap-friendly NHL deal.

    October-November:
    Perron-Hall-Eberle
    Omark-Gagner-Yakupov
    Joensuu-Gordon-Hemsky
    Smyth-Lander-Jones

I’m less queasy about the above than the status quo. Like the below a lot more though:

    September-June:
    Hall-RNH-Eberle
    Perron-Gagner-Yakupov
Cleary-Magical trade return for Omark and Hemsky-Joensuu
    Smyth-Gordon-Jones

  80. bendelson says:

    linkfromhyrule,

And Hemsky stays on the third line?
Hmm. I don’t know it is that simple. I would suggest a healthy and motivated Hemsky makes it somewhat complicated.

Good problem to have I guess, if it’s handled properly by the organization that is…

  81. FastOil says:

    stevezie,

True but there have been different takes on him, especially given the team was horrible. I would prefer a player closer to 200 lbs (not coke machine but stronger) but will take his tenacity and the fact that I don’t see him backing down from anybody.

Hopefully he and Yak don’t get into a hot dogging comp. Belanger may explode.

No, his advanced stats actually are good. He had the Oilers 2nd best CorsiON and 3rd best CorsiREL (just behind Hall and Eberle) in 10-11. In 11-12 he was near the bottom, but 14GP isn’t really a fair sample size to put any value into imo.

Hey i like Omark. Argue 14 games in a position to fail is a lousy sample size and you’ll get no arguement from me, but I think we can agree that for some reason the normally severe blogosphere seems willing to give Omark allowances they(we) don’t hand out to everyone.

I think it’s to balances the Burkes of the world. I like Burke, too.
