TRAINING CAMP HOPEFUL #2: ANDREW MILLER

Andrew Miller is a 5.10, 180 center with a lot of skill, some impressive NCAA boxcars and a long list of awards and accomplishments in junior and college hockey.

  • 2012-13: Frozen Four Tournament MVP
  • 2012-13: ECAC 1st All-Star
  • 2010-11: ECAC 1st All-Star
  • 2008-09: USHL Player of the year, leading scorer, 1st All-Star

RE 13-14: 2, 0-0-0

Miller’s offense at Yale was impressive (he scored 77 points over his final 71 games), but Robert Vollman’s new book suggests that the ECAC (the NCAA division Yale plays in) pales in comparison to the stronger WCHA and CCHA. Miller’s NHLE’s over the course of his college career:

  • Age 21 82, 3-18-21
  • Age 22 82, 7-19-26
  • Age 23 82, 4-18-22
  • Age 24 82, 10-13-23

I ran Vollman’s new numbers through the AHL team and found Arcobello (82, 11-23-34) to be a significantly more talented offensive player, and considering they’re both undersized players and that Arcobello is about one month older (25 in 10 days, Miller turns 25 September 18th), I’m comfortable in making the bet on Arcobello for 2013-14 over Miller (in terms of GP in the NHL). Vollman’s book is here.

It’s weird reading this now, before Arco, when as you mention, you’ve got Arco ahead of him.

Or, it’s hard to remind my brain that you are doing a bunch of things in parallel.

  2. striatic says:

given the accolades he has received, i have to think he’s probably pretty defensively sound compared to his peers.

maybe this gives him the edge over Arcobello, at least once RNH is healthy and the battle is more for the 4C slot.

I really hope MacT and Eakins give Arco and Miller a chance as the 13/14 too. Having a skilled C/W play on the 4th line is alright by my books, damn the size fetish.

Striatic: Good point, and we’ll know more at training camp about his 2-way ability and how he looks at a higher level.

I think the biggest thing that gives him an edge over Arco is that he’s a MacT signing and not a Stumbalini signing.

Looking at their numbers (Arco and Miller) and there’s not a lot to give between them and Arco has a year of pro under his belt.

I think if RNH isn’t ready for the 1st game that Lander gets the 2C spot and its the 4C up for grabs.

    Woodguy,

Especially taking into account his words saying he expects Miller to surprise at camp. MacT sounds like he really believes in Miller. Because Arcobello posted his numbers in the AHL it’s hard not to give him the edge over Miller. But Miller is an intriguing prospect. Putting up the Numbers he has in the USHL and college while winning player of the year and MVP awards left and right in my eyes means he has game. Wouldn’t surprise me if he out performs Arcobello.

Gordon gets the 2C spot ahead of Lander. as little offense as Gordon has, it is still more than Lander has demonstrated at the NHL level.

i do think Arcobello ends up as 2C until RNH gets back though, likely with Hall and Eberle for support. they worked well in the AHL together, and that combination should be able to hold its own given the immense talent on the wings.

is Lander a better NHL player than Arcobello right now? probably, but he’s more of an anchor on the Top 6 guys than Arcobello would be.

Did everyone see that Paajarvi signed with St. Louis?

    2 years at $2.4, $1.2 Cap hit.

    Boy they got a steal.

Agreed, it’s a value contract. But that’s more because he’s still “unproven” and an “rfa.” IIRC that is the ballpark LT pegged him to sign with EDM for.

It’s one of those “market” = “value” contract convergence deals.

  10. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

    Numenius,

I see from this post, LT had the cap hit a half M higher.

    “Magnus Paajarvi 1.7M (est)”

    value contract indeed.

I see that LA has signed Clifford to a 2 year deal. Does anyone know the $ amount? Does this put the end to the rumours of him hitting the market?

I hope Miller and Arco get a few games in the NHL, nice to see guys achieve a dream.

Considering the rest of us didn’t ;)

    Clifford: 2 years, 1.075M per http://lakingsinsider.com/2013/08/02/clifford-2-years-1-075m-per/

    THAT’s a value deal.

  14. yellow p0ne says:

From what I’ve heard and seen, Arco tends to cheat for offense a bit. If Miller can win a faceoff and show that he’s more defensively sound than Arcobello, then I think he has a chance to challenge for a roster spot.

100% agree with this. Arcobello killed it with Hall and Ebs when RNH was nursing his shoulder and at the WJrs. 20 Pts in 14 GP between when Nuge left and the lockout ended. Nuge only put up 20 Pts in 19 AHL GP. He can clearly hang with Hall and Eberle at least part time. And I really don’t see them putting Lander at 2C – Miller might have a shot too, but please not Lander.

Speaking of MPS, LT you are always talking about the Oilers needing a Pisani type…. well there you can see that we traded him away.

You’re right, that’s a much, MUCH better value deal than for MPS.

I’m just glad we managed to get Jones signed for 1.5M. Phew! To be fair, Jones might outscore them both though…

You bet, he’s an outstanding young player. No arguments there, but he’s not on the roster. Need a Pisani.

    Scoring isn’t everything.

  20. Numenius says:

I wonder if Miller’s edge in size will tip the balance in his favour, despite his lower boxcars. Arcobello is a strapping 5’8″ (or 5’9″ depending on the source) 165 and Miller rounds out at 5’10″ 180. That difference could be the difference between an NHL career and none, ceteris paribus.

  21. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Dead Cat Bounce: Scoring isn’t everything.

Results matter… unless it’s an Oiler.

  22. jp says:

Dead Cat Bounce: Scoring isn’t everything.

Certainly true. I wasn’t serious about being happy with the Jones deal even though he could outscore MPS and Clifford. Those are 2 extremely nice deals for solid hockey players. Jones – meh.

Romulus Apotheosis: Results matter… unless it’s an Oiler.

Have the Oilers had some results that I must have missed?

With the forward group STL has, Hitchcock should be able to bring Paajarvi in very slowly.

The downside is he may not get all that much ice time and he’ll have Dimitrij Jaskin nipping at his heels.
