OILERS MAKE FIRST CUTS

The Edmonton Oilers made their first cuts this morning, the beginning of a week that should see the club reduce the men at Rexall by 20. If coach Dallas Eakins wants to get this team down to a manageable number, this is the way to do it.

FIRST CUTS

  1. Marco Roy: Impressed in Penticton and played well enough last night. There’s no reason to expect he could push deeper into camp, this is a completely reasonable time to get him out of town and back to the QMJHL.
  2. Jackson Houck: Came up injured during the rookie week, still he showed some nice things.
  3. Greg Chase: Impressed at rookie camp, certainly did more than some higher picks and is a player to watch in junior.
  4. Ben Betker: Huge stay at home guy showed well.
  5. Ty Bilcke: Showed well enough in rookie camp, exposed badly (as one might expect) as the competition improved.
  6. Reid Petryk: At 20, he might have shown more.
  7. Kyle Platzer: In some ways, the most impressive player among today’s cuts. I have no idea what he is, and am not going to add to the confusion. He sure scored a lot for a guy no one talks about, though.

Who is still here that might have been sent away today? No one really. These are basically the most recent draft picks minus Darnell Nurse and we know the Oilers wanted him to have a longer look at his future in Edmonton. The next list of cuts will probably include Cam Abney, Mitchell Moroz, Jujhar Khaira and the AHL guys will start getting sent out after the junior kids are sent away.

Camp news we’re not hearing? Nuge’s timeline, Belov’s arrival.

Damn. Thanks, Bruce! What do you make of Platzer? I don’t want to get ahead of things, but good lord he did things every damn game!

  2. hunter1909 says:

    Hey hey Brucie!

Looking forward to this season, only if they win.

The new coach seems to have a similar opinion.

  3. Hammers says:

Soundedlike Marachin had a great game but doubt he pushes into final 7 or 8 . Final roster has a few arguments left like Lander vs Acton & Joensuu vs Hamilton / Eager and do you keep 14 forward or 8″D” but we can’t forget players get left on IR sometimes up to 2-3 weeks. We have seen it before as it makes teams really think if they want to pick them of the waiver wire . Next 3 preseason games shakes out the final roster .

  4. Lowetide says:

There’s also the possibility that the Oilers grab someone from waivers. Still lots to be decided, but among the group who need to show well I’d say the two former Marlies and Joensuu did exactly that last night (based on reports).

  5. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Any word on C. Hamilton (I asked in the last thread).

Was he healthy scratched last night, or is he injured/ill?

I’m curious to see if him and Pitlick manage to get a game in.

He’s been with the injured guys from beginning of camp, I think it might be recovery time from last year’s injury but can’t say for certain.

Good Lord, C. Hamilton and Pitlick can’t catch a break! They haven’t done much to help themselves but jeez, you’d think one of them would get a year during their entry level that isn’t marred by injury. God damn that pubis scurvy!

  8. Lois Lowe says:

A top 4 in OKC of Fedun, Marincin, and two of Larsen, Potter, and Klefbom is pretty good. It will certainly allow Gernat to be sheltered.

Who is still here that might have been sent away today?

    Um, Abney?

    From the Oilers website:

    Ben Betker (Everett – WHL)
    Ty Bilcke (Windsor – OHL)
    Greg Chase (Calgary – WHL)
    Jackson Houck (Vancouver – WHL)
    Reid Petryk (Everett – WHL)
    Kyle Platzer (London – OHL)
    Marc-Olivier Roy (Blainville-Boisbriand- QMJHL)

Thats not good news at all for goalie Roy being sent out so soon.

The pro players (AHL, ECHL) can’t really get sent down because OKC training camp hasn’t started yet.

Goalie Roy is still in camp, as mentioned above the Barons TC hasn’t started yet so pro players remain in camp. The Roy sent out today is a forward, taken in the 2nd round this summer.

He was a little lucky around the net, but the fact remains he was around the net. Has to be the leading candidate of 2013 draftees to see a big bump in his numbers this year. One of several interesting draft-and-follow projects newly added to the system.

  14. "Steve Smith" says:

    Lowetide,

Right. Almost as if you specifically said that in your post.

That’s it – off to jail.

  15. prairieschooner says:

Like many on here I spent a chunk of last night searching for a working feed.
I think the technology exists to the point that it did not have to be that way.
We the third class fans are completely helpless we can not even throw the kid up on the roof to dick around with the antenna.
    Shame on whoever was responsible!

lol. I attempled to be casual in an effort to be easy breezy.

Any update on Oscar Klefbom? Will he be ready for tomorrows preseason game?

  18. Romulus Apotheosis says:

ha. that will teach me to refresh, wander off and then come back. LT beat me to it on the Roy mix-up.

He was skating with non-starters iirc. Which means he’s coming back, a matter of time. Next game is Tuesday right?

i think Fedun makes the big club.

seeing him good, i know, i know.

  21. TheOtherJohn says:

Time to make call on draft pick, minor league pro making squad is when they play last 2 exhibition games against NHL calibre rosters. If Fedun is still looking good, that’s great! Playing well against split squad with roster interspersed with CHL/ECHL/AHL/NHL players should not be tough for him. He’s never reached last preseason games yet.

Hope he makes it & still looks good

  22. hunter1909 says:

Does anyone else like what they saw of Gregory Chase?

He reminds me of a Glen Sather pick up.

    400+ NHL games coming, lol.

I liked him plenty. He’s got enough skill to be in the game, and he’s an agitator type. I think he could be a draft steal.

  24. Bar_Qu says:

Chase is a good reason for me to take my kids to Hitmen games. Sounds like a real player in the Tikkanen

  25. Bar_Qu says:

    model. Stupid phone.

  26. bendelson says:

Nice to see Marincin, Fedun and Davidson off to solid starts…
It is easy to cheer like hell for all three.

Marincin is chaos inc. but seems to come out on top enough to think there is a real chance he can/will take the next step into the NHL soon enough.
Fedun has a habit of outperforming expectations. It’s happening again this camp…
And Davidson. He continues to impress with every opportunity provided. Time will tell but with a little luck a Stevie Staios type career may be within reach (character journeyman D that squeezes every ounce out of his middling skill set.)

  27. JamesL says:

Example of Greg Chase chirping: At the UofA game, after being sent to the box (along with a Bears player), he opened the door to the penalty box and yelled: “Nice hair, you f–king homo!”

Par for the course, I guess, but disappointing in its lack of creativity…
