PS G1 AND 2: OILERS V FLAMES

A. A. Milne: “Well,” said Pooh, “what I like best,” and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn’t know what it was called.”

It’s been so long, too long, friends. I spent part of the week speaking to friends about this fall (you know who you are) and it looks like we’ve made it through the lockout, the long  journey from playoff fails and are feeling good vibrations about this season. Do those opinions differ from last time? Well, let’s have a look:

COMMENTS ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2011 (GAMES 1 AND 2 GDT)

  • Woodguy: Hockey!!! )or some reasonable facsimile thereof where 62.5% of the players on the ice will be gone from the NHL in week). Hockey!!!
  • DBO from the Oil website. The Edmonton game lineup
    Hall – Belanger –Jones
    Paajarvi – Lander – Omark
    Eager – Pitlick – Keller
    Martindale – House – Cornet
    13 Cam Barker – 77 Tom Gilbert
    8 Martin Marincin – 86 Kirill Tulupov
    87 David Musil – 81 Taylor Fedun
  • DBO sask game:
    Smyth-Hopkins-Eberle
    Tyrvainen-CVV-Hartikainen
    Petrell-Brule-Hordichuk
    Green-O’Marra-Hamilton
    Smid-Peckham
    Chorney-Petry
    Davidson-Potter
    Dubnynk
Roy (they have listed on the other game so not sure who will be the backup
  • HBomb: Hall – Belanger –Jones
God I hope this is a preseason-only thing. Because the only times that Jones and Hall should be on the ice together during the regular season are practice and pre-game warm-up.
  • bookje: If you can only watch one game – which one do you choose and why?
  • DeadmanWaking: Nobody skates around the Epaulette Line:
Tyrvainen/Nugent-Hopkins/Hartikainen but you gotta protect them from Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla. Do not fold, spindle, mutilate, or flip over to continue filling out the other side. We actually had those in school, circa the Henderson goal. We also had the old aniline purple Ditto machine. Everything I Know I Learned in Kindergarten from Hand Outs with Purple Splotches. Deep Purple it wasn’t.  A few years later, we had a substitute teacher for nearly a full year who was on the Dolly Parton side of Erin Andrews, but with thick black hair and a less commanding eye roll. Some horny bastard took her to a KISS concert in Calgary. Probably on the back of a big rumbly bike. We heard all about it for weeks afterwards (the concert, not the bastard, this is still in the seventies after all). Less purple ink, but still not a whole lot of lesson planning going on. She dressed tight, short, and flouncy with thin shoulder straps and looked a lot like an overflowing side-by-side double scoop ice cream cone tapered to stiletto perfection. At that age I was just cluing into the relationship between megamellons, millihelens and gagasieverts.
  • hunter1909: Funny, but the only Oilers defenceman I give a shit about seems to be Tulupov. The others either get hurt all the bloody time, are pansies(I’m sorry Tom, but standing staring with puppy dog eyes in the crease as one of your team mates gets whacked qualifies you for the hunter hate list).Besides, my own psycho fantasy if I was a prospect would have me drilling everyone in sight, then, making the team I’d merely start hammering everyone with a different colored jersey. And yes, I’m already drinking, although not heavily enough.

Those are the first few of 237 comments in the GDT (it is here if you want to read them all) from two years ago. Fun stuff to look back and reflect on.

NO NUGE YET

nuge1

Remember the other day when we talked about Nuge and his timeline? Remember when we agreed that “November 1′ was old info and we should expect an update during TC? Well, no update yet but there’s enough anecdotal information out there now to suggest that November 1st is unlikely–I’d bet at this point the Nuge is playing this time next month. We’ll see, but MacT is basically taking the question out of reporters arsenal, and the actual news on the biggest story in camp doesn’t exist. MAN what a world!

 EDMONTON LINEUP

  • L1: Hall-Smyth-Hemsky: This line should have an immediate impact.
  • L2: Arcobello-Yakupov-Omark: I expect this line to be exciting. Everywhere.
  • L3: Lander-Joensuu-Roy: I’m cheering like hell for all three, this might be Roy’s only game.
  • L4: Platzer-Martindale-Brown: Goofy line. Platzer gets rewarded, Martindale needs to show well but Brown is also on the line.
  • D1: Nurse-Ference: I’m wondering if Marincnin should feel slighted, but have decided it’s early. Nurse with a great showcase.
  • D2: Grebeshkov-Musil: A big test for both players. This could be a saloon door tandem.
  • D3: Davidson-J Schultz: Davidson gets a very nice push.
  • G1: Dubnyk (Roy): Dubnyk is the day one starter, Roy the best prospect in the organization.

CALGARY LINEUP

  • L1: Gagner-Hamilton-Eberle: Hamilton has a massive opportunity this fall.
  • L2: Gordon-Jones-Perron: Jones needs to have a very good camp, he’ll be battling Hamilton, Joensuu, Smyth, Omark, others.
  • L3: Acton-Eager-Pitlick: Eager has been receiving a lot of attention.
  • L4: Ewanyk-Bilcke-Chase: I bet they’d sign Bilcke if they could. Ewanyk has been poor this camp.
  • D1: Smid-Petry: Top pairing going in, they’ll get more support this season and should flourish.
  • D2: N Schultz-Fedun: A nice slot for Fedun, pleased for him.
  • D3: Marincin-Larsen: Two guys who may be fighting for NHL jobs later this month.
  • G1: LaBarbera (Bachman): I think LaBarbera is a little underrated by the fanbase.

The Edmonton game will be on the Oilers website, the Calgary viewing is listed as to be determined on both team sites. We wait.

Roster turnovers are rampant, but there are 41 players gone from the 2011 training camp roster (67 total). Roster is here.

    BlacqueJacque,

Agree totally. I’m writing a paper in law school on the very topic. I’d urge you to read HJ Chang’s book “kicking away the ladder” specifically the chapter on how copyright inhibits creativity and development of developing economies in Asia (when adhered to[which it isnt])

I’m going to go with this:

someone tripped over a wall-plug, woke up half hour later with the carpet creased into their face, drool on the floor and a hazy memory of what happened, plugged the plug back in and wandered off to the staff room for an english muffin.

    Nightman_:
    Lowetide,
First period, “this game is not available in your area”

    You know what? Exactly.

Write that up. It’s a disgrace. WTF do the Oilers or the NHL lose by letting fans in North Carolina or Winnipeg or wherever else on the planet watch this game online? Bandwidth is CHEAP.

  14. dessert1111 says:

Platzer has looked really good for his draft number so far. Today’s goal wasn’t anything flashing, but he was in the right place and was strong on the puck for a young guy. Omark-Arco-Yak have looked consistently dangerous, able to keep the puck in the O zone most the time.

Will be interesting to see what these guys can do against better competition, but still, good arrows…

  15. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Is anyone else really stoked to see Omark showed up with a beard.

  16. skidplate says:

    Here come the Oilers!!!!

  17. BlacqueJacque says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

And so far he’s one of the best Oilers on the ice. Him and Yak are like sharks in a pool with a bloody seal.

  18. HiddenDarts says:

Not sure if this has been posted, but if you can’t get the game at the Oilers site, get it at the Flames site. Apparently their IT people have it together.

  19. skidplate says:

Looked like Brown was going to go.

  20. Young Oil says:

Flames score a goal in CGY. Bounced in front and Poirier pounces on it.

    Hemksy not on the bench?

  23. skidplate says:

    Skids?

  24. Safetyguy says:

    nice charge by joennsu

  25. striker says:

Bad pass by Larsen while under duress. Calm feet by Marincin

  26. skidplate says:

Brown with some nice work behind the net. Martindale could have used that goal.

  27. BlacqueJacque says:

    I’m liking the hybrid icing.

I bet Fedun has some comments on that.

  28. uni says:

Wait, where’s Hemsky? Is he injured already?

  29. BlacqueJacque says:

    striker:
Bad pass by Larsen while under duress.Calm feet by Marincin

Yeah, Larsen isn’t ready. He already threw a suicide pass right into the middle of the ice, early in the first, and fumbled a couple of passes (one receiving, one attempted) when he had time.

  30. Lois Lowe says:

    striker,

What year? There sure are a lot of law talkin’ guys around here.

  31. Dead Cat Bounce says:

    Yes.

    Cammilerri scores, quick hands

  34. skidplate says:

YES. Arco with good work from YAK

  35. BlacqueJacque says:

    WOOOO!

Arcobello works hard to strip the puck, chips it to Yakupov and puts in the rebound!

  36. Lowetide says:

Yakupov with a lot of work, Arcobello with the goal.

  37. Young Oil says:

2-2 in CGY, 4-1 in EDM.

  38. skidplate says:

    And Juensuu

  39. Nightman_ says:

    crude,

Well clearly I was seeing things, “riddled with illness”

  40. justDOit says:

    Lowetide,

Nobody? Ok, well I was watching both feeds, so…

Good pace to the first. The Hall line buzzed with intensity, with Hall seen as both good and not so (on his butt).

Schultz J skating well, and confident with the puck – not afraid to find himself in enemy territory.

Yak directing laser-like pucks at the net a few times – one of which was up around Omark’s chest, while screening.

Nurse also not afraid to push the limits. Skating very well.

Ference as advertised – quick on the puck, making smart plays.

Flames with a lucky goal – directed on net into a crowd.

Petry skating well – whoops, wrong game.

  41. BlacqueJacque says:

Hemsky illness apparently. Will not return.

  42. Safetyguy says:

    Hemsky ‘riddled with illness’

  43. skidplate says:

    BlacqueJacque,

I hope he wasn’t doing any pitlickin’

  44. crude says:

Hemsky has apparently been playing at “not a hundred percent” since the start of the pre-season. “riddled with illness”

  45. BlacqueJacque says:

    skidplate,

I don’t know whether we should keep Pitlick as some sort of voodoo magnet for all injuries and diseases, or get rid of him before he spreads bad luck.

  46. skidplate says:

I am surprised they are throwing chips. Figured it would be celery sticks to somthing

  47. crude says:

    Nightman_:
    crude,

Oh I appreciate the any feedback. thanks!

  48. skidplate says:

    Goaler change. Roy in

    and Berra for the Flamers

  49. Nightman_ says:

Someone mentioned not being impressed by hemskys physicals, probably not bad for being riddled with illnesses

  50. skidplate says:

    Shite. Wideman 4 – 2

  51. Lowetide says:

Roy now in net, Hemsky riddled with bullets from the pressbox. Calgary scores right away, 4-2 now.

  52. striker says:

Gordon looks solid positionally. Perron looking like the bona fide scoring threat he is. Tell you what, with this Marincin fella, let him marinate in OKC for a while longer and we have a top 4 dman on our hands

  53. crude says:

    poor Roy

  54. skidplate says:

    0.000 save percentage for Roy

  55. skidplate says:

It was a perfect shot from Wideman

  56. BlacqueJacque says:

Joensuu with the hard work and Roy scores! edit – or, never mind, it’s all Joensuu with a paper helper from Schultzy (y for younger).

  57. skidplate says:

    Juensuu looking fine. Harski who?

  58. Safetyguy says:

Way to answer back Joennsu!!! 5-2 oilers

  59. Lowetide says:

Joensuu channeling his inner Ryan Smyth. he’s a discovery!

  60. Suntory Hanzo says:

    Yo En Sue seems legit!

  61. skidplate says:

Smyth been teaching him the wrap around

  62. Suntory Hanzo says:

    Lowetide,

    Totally thought the same thing.

  63. skidplate says:

    We may have our Fin

  64. Safetyguy says:

lets hope he goes for the Gordy Howe hat trick. That would leave an impression.

  65. Minister D- says:

Love what this Joensuu kid is bringing. Looks like a great find, just the kind of guy we need in the bottom six. Let’s hope this isn’t an illusion.

  66. Suntory Hanzo says:

Def prefer Hall on the wing.

  70. striker says:

Oilers ahead 3-2 in saddledome. Missed the goal. 4:30 to go in the game. Marincin scored it

  71. skidplate says:

    Marincin from Hamilton and Eberle

  72. striker says:

Perron has great handles with the puck

  73. Suntory Hanzo says:

Remember when you played Mite, and you hpoed the puck would be on edge so you could slap it and raise the puck?

That’s Grebs, except he make a million dollars.

  74. Safetyguy says:

LMAO, watching the Calgary feed, fans trying to sing along to the good old hockey game who obviously don’t know the words. Pan to a mom holding a 2-3 year old wearing a flames jersey, with a totally lost look on his face while he scratches his head ‘whats going on’. Get used to it flames fans, you will be scratching your heads for a while.

side note, the fact that im an oilers fan going bald is entirely unrelated

  75. skidplate says:

    Nice save Roy

  76. BlacqueJacque says:

Sometimes I wonder if Jack Michaels doesn’t have a little too much fun with the play by play.

  91. striatic says:

  92. BlacqueJacque says:

Heh, so our weaker squad beats their ringers in Calgary, and our good squad is predictably stomping the scrubs they sent to Edmonton.

    LOVE IT.

Hahaha Joensuu is impressed with our crowd for an exhibition game. Probably bigger than anything he ever saw in Long Island.

  93. Romulus Apotheosis says:

  97. Ribs says:

  98. Lowetide says:

From what I’ve seen, Hall’s doing some nice work here tonight down low, but they seem to have switched out Smyth. Is that the Hemsky injury/illness?

    Haha classic quote. Love it

  102. BlacqueJacque says:

    Lowetide,

I’ve noticed Hall more in our zone than anything in the Flames zone since that goal, and that one “penalty” where Smith dove. Hall’s stick was kinda in his legs but not touching. Hall is doing the job defensively but still is no Nuge or Gagner taking the puck up the middle. Almost looks like an aggressive defenceman skating the puck up to our neutral zone and dishing it.

    I’m a Hartikainen believer.

I think his issue last year was weird NHL luck more than size. He seemed to control the puck pretty well. Just couldn’t piss a drop.

Sure. but doesn’t “beat up and injured” describe most hockey players at any given time?

I don’t recall it keeping him out of the lineup… or affecting his scoring (NHL: none; AHL: fine)

  109. Gret99zky says:

Crazy would be to select a high school player in the first round of the NHL draft, but this…wait, nevermind.

Is Joey MacDonald going to be a regular starting goalie in the NHL? I don’t envy those Flames fans for the next 3-5 years, my god.

Soft: synonyms foreign, skilled. To be born anywhere other than Canada. Also applies to those born in Quebec.

Because Hall still shows immaturity. Between his performance at training camp and his own comments about his summer training, he seems to have not taken Eakins warning about conditioning seriously.

  124. Gret99zky says:

I like Hall better on the wing. JMO. Better options for C. Don’t mess with a super-nova.

No doubt about his talent, or his drive to win a game, but his commitment off ice, I can see why people would question it.

  133. BlacqueJacque says:

Well Ference was in the best shape of the Oilers, and look at Smyth’s fitness in-game as well given his limited minutes. Keep in mind this is based off of one viewing the first day at TC, and fitness has never really been an issue with Hall, he’s flying every game. If you’re right though, his off ice commitment will surely change shortly under Eakins.

That test, 6 times, 30 seconds between attempts.

I don’t care how you justify it – recovery time or speed – there’s no way 37-year-old Smyth should beat 22-year-old Hall. To be fair, Hemsky was worse, but Smyth was slow relative to Ference. Ference just demolished everybody.

  156. Nightman_ says:

    BlacqueJacque,

Wow. Doesn’t make sense at all. I just don’t believe that he is in better shape than hall. Hemsky’s got a good excuse at least. Well, lets hope we see a spin o rama

  157. striatic says:

BJ, i think you can do poorly on that test even if you are in good condition, if you don’t pace yourself properly.

Mveh, Marcel Dionne never won a championship, doesn’t mean he wasn’t a helluva player. Too bad, Iverson was second only to Micheal Jordan in playoff scoring.

He did win dual State championships as a high school player though.

  169. BlacqueJacque says:

    Lois Lowe,

Oh I know, I just think that if your coach tells you to show up to camp in shape and you blow it, you’re not getting the C.

I admit I know nothing of Hall outside of these camps and what I’ve seen in games. Based on how he comes across in interviews, he looks like a serious, motivated guy and I have zero doubt he leaves everything on the ice. I also don’t have access to other fitness tests, and I already said in other threads that it may be his awkward skating style that tires him out.

That said… getting beat by Smytty? Yikes.

  170. Gret99zky says:

No offense intended none taken. My brother did open palm slap a guy that started making those sounds once though, maybe I’ll tell you the story if you’re ever in the GTA over a pint someday.

  178. Andropod says:

Apologies if I offended. I do try to hold back my attitude here.

  180. Lois Lowe says:

justDOit: But I think that was his exact disclaimer – this is just my observation from a training camp scrimmage.

He’s dumping on Hall pretty hard in this thread, despite the fact that Hall said that his offseason training isn’t focused on ice. If Hall hadn’t really skated all summer, there is no compensating for the specific demands it requires. Ever try skiing after a summer off? Those muscles hurt no matter how talented and fit your are.

I prefer the narrative that Hall isn’t in hockey shape because his off season isn’t built around things he can do well, it’s focused on strengthening his weaknesses which is best done off ice. He said prior to the physicals that he’s trying to peak for G1, not the preseason. The data that Eakins and Co. got from the tests is what it is, but it is only one metric, and we should hope that it’s being used as a baseline and nothing more.

  181. uni says:

    Andropod,

The only positive you can take from it is that hopefully they learn from it. The taste this leaves in their mouths should carry on into the season.

  182. striatic says:

    that was horrible.

the good news, i think, is that Ference was +2 and Schultz was even.

the goats on defense were guys unlikely to make the team – Grebeshkov and Musil, both -2.

yes Grebeshkov made some good powerplay passes, but he was so defensively terrible that this is irrelevant.

it sucks that Belov isn’t here because if the Oilers want to run 8 D, Belov is pretty much all the competition Grebeshkov has on the left side, unless you want to play Nurse at 18. Marincin scored a goal but was still -1 on the game.

i don’t hink we’ve seen a 4LD that inspires much confidence even in limited minutes.

really hope Belov impresses once he gets here, or the Oilers only run 7 D.

  183. BlacqueJacque says:

    Lois Lowe,

I don’t mean to dump on Hall, I’m just listing the reasons why I think he’s got a poor off-ice rep and may not be named captain. In the other thread I was making excuses for Hall’s poor skating performance, if you remember.

As for calling Hall out on two giveaways and a dumb overtime penalty, well, I think anyone would?

  184. Andropod says:

    uni,

Hopefully they get this kind of effort behind them in the pre-season eh. At least Yak was pissed.

  185. uni says:

    BlacqueJacque,

No update on Hemksy. Confirmed though: Definitely illness. Not injury. Too bad for dead cats.

  189. uni says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

Could just be he has no patience for the media. Kind of a, “Oh bother, these useless jagoffs again”.

  190. striatic says:

    – F Locks –

    Perron-Hall-Eberle
    Smyth-Gagner-Yakupov
    ? -Gordon-Hemsky
    ? – ? – Jones
    ?

3LW – Joensuu – right now i think Joensuu is putting himself into “lock” territory. he’s the player type the management wants, a little bit in the Clarkson mould, and the top 9 skill leaves Omark on the outside.

4LW – Hamilton – had a good game. knows the coach. better 4th line fit than Omark. Eager needs to step it up.

4C – Acton – had a good game. knows the coach. i think he’s drawing even with Lander so far, similar players. Hall’s seeming success at Centre and the willingness to play him there isn’t good news for Arcobello.

PB/13F – Brown – this is Brown’s job unless Eager shows he’s back to fighting again, which is sort of sad. i really wish the 13F was Omark, or even Eager, but so far neither is showing well enough.

    – D Locks –

    Smid-Petry
    Ference-J. Schultz
    N. Schultz-?
    ?-?

3RD – Fedun – Will have to wait to see Potter, but Fedun looked extremely good, and certainly better than the other competition, Larsen.

4D – Marincin – it’ll be interesting do see if Grebeshkov looks any better when not babysitting Musil, or if Belov is the superior option, but right now i think Marincin is the best spare D.

    PB/4D2 – Potter – Larsen didn’t impress enough. i’m thinking 8 D is pretty unlikely anyway.

  191. striatic says:

what a stupid long winded comment when all i really needed to say is that as of today i think i’d give the edge to Hamilton, Acton, Brown, Fedun and Marincin to fill out the bottom of the NHL roster, and Omark, Lander, Eager, Larsen and Grebeshkov to be sent down to OKC

  192. Bank Shot says:

I just got back from the Edmonton game.

It was pretty entertaining until the third. Seemed like the Oilers let off the gas and then just couldn’t find their way again. I think it must have been a little tough due to Hemsky missing the last two periods. Seemed like it was a different line combination every shift through the second and third.

I’d probably cut Platzer and Martindale after that game. They look a long way away from the NHL.

Hall and Yakupov looked good in spurts.

Smyth was same old Smytty. Little slower but still putting in the effort and not making mistakes. Ference was great. Nurse looked alright for a 18 year old. His athleticism is through the roof.

Schultz junior and Davidson looked like a good paring. Davidson seems pretty smart without any glaring holes. They did get a lot of time behind the Hall line though.

Musil seems like a pretty smart defender. Needs to work on first couple of steps for sure. Grebeshkov was like we remember. Looked great setting up Smytty then took the brown acid and looked like he was trying to give the game away in the third.

Joensuu looked good when the game slowed down. I’m not really sold on him yet. He scored a couple of points, but the guy is all kinds of slow and doesn’t look all that solid on his skates for a big man. Got rocked at least twice. Didn’t really look like a guy that could fill in on a scoring line.

Arcobello was pretty decent. tried to force a few passes but showed pretty well otherwise. Omark had a few good chances. He’s pretty absent when the puck is in the Oilers half of the ice though. I doubt he ever produces enough to make up for that.

    Goaltending was hard to watch.

  193. BlacqueJacque says:

    striatic,

I enjoyed it, don’t worry. I just don’t want to post too much and express more aggravation than really necessary.

Bank Shot: Joensuu looked good when the game slowed down. I’m not really sold on him yet. He scored a couple of points, but the guy is all kinds of slow and doesn’t look all that solid on his skates for a big man.

interesting. he didn’t seem that slow over the stream. so he truly is slow not just one of those “big, so looks slow” guys?

Bank Shot: Arcobello was pretty decent. tried to force a few passes but showed pretty well otherwise. Omark had a few good chances. He’s pretty absent when the puck is in the Oilers half of the ice though. I doubt he ever produces enough to make up for that.

did Arcobello play with Yakupov and Omark all night, or did he see any time with 4th line types? if Hall sticks at C, those are the guys he will need to play with.

Bank Shot: Goaltending was hard to watch.

even Dubnyk? do to stream failure we didn’t see him much. his number looked strong though ..

  195. Bank Shot says:

    striatic,

Perhaps Joensuu looks slow due to his size. He looked on par with Musil speed wise. Martindale is about the same size though and looked to have better straight away speed. Probably doesn’t help that Joensuu doesn’t look very coordinated when he moves. Neither of his points were really what I would call “skill” plays and didn’t really see any of those from him so you have to wonder if its there.

Arcobello played a lot with Omark and Yak to start but the blender was on in full when Hemsky went down. Seemed like everybody had played with everyone else by the end of the game.

The goal on Dubnyk was awful. Can’t let a guy score from the hashmarks with his butt on the boards. He let at least one other through him that Hall scooped off the goal line. He made some good stops in tight, but wasn’t great IMO.

Re pre-season, or whatever it’s called:

Fed up with it. Oiler’s often win in these silly games then blow the real season, or lose now, then keep losing anyway.

I’m starting to wonder if this team ranks with the worst teams of all time. Seven years and counting sure doesn’t help anyone.

Only caught parts of the games but by my eye, I’m going to LOVE Perron. He Yak and Gags are going to MURDER soft comp this season.

FM: Agreed. I didn’t watch a lot of the CGY game but to my eye Perron is high skill with a litlte more size than the Oiler roster has boasted in the past. Stops short of being a PF but he’s going to be able to play with the high end guys and contribute.
