PS G5 OILERS V CANUCKS

The Edmonton Oilers are 2-2 so far in pre-season, with some interesting performances–good and bad–clouding the possible opening night roster. Tonight, we’lre going to see 14 guys who are likely to make the final cut and another 8 who are on the bubble. Let’s have a look.

TONIGHT’S LINEUP

lane2

  • Hall-Smyth-Hemsky: This has been a line for long enough I think we can talk about it actually happening opening night. I wonder if they might slip Yakupov or Perron into Smyth’s slot sometime this week, but the Hall-Hemsky chem is real and spectacular. Smyth’s footspeed is going to be a problem, and Yakupov is available for elevation tonight.
  • Gagner-Perron-Eberle: I don’t like the Gagner-Eberle combination intuitively because they are so similar, but Eakins must see something he likes here. Perron is a fascinating player to watch, certainly gives the team a gear they didn’t have one year ago. I think this could be a line opening night, although for me Gagner-Yakupov was interesting in Winnipeg and it would be nice to see it again.
  • Khaira-R Hamilton-Yakupov: A nice push for the kid Khaira, if he could keep up with Yakupov I’d be over the moon. More likely, this line won’t last long and you’ll see Yak City with the high end skill guys. Hamilton continues to get a push.
  • Acton-Jones-Brown: This could be a 4line opening night and I don’t think people would be overly surprised. Acton looks good but his results (faceoffs, etc) don’t match the saw him good storyline. Parkatti’s game stats the other night saw him bad and I don’t think he’s grabbed the job. Jones is a guy I have making the roster, he’ll be able to help the 3 and 4 line scoring and could jump up in a pinch. Brown seems to be less impressive to those who clamor for this player type than he was a year ago, I’m not certain why. Either way, I expect he makes the final roster.
  • Nurse-Petry: Coach Dallas Eakins was quoted this morning as saying Nurse is “definitely getting better every day… His job is to keep screwing up our plans” and that seems about right. Nurse at 22 is pretty much exactly what this team needs, but things can look one way in a small window and those things can disappear over the long haul. The Oilers–in my opinion–are at least thinking about it based on the players he’s been paired with this TC. I still believe they’ll send him out, but at this point a 9-game look is possible. Petry is old reliable without actually being old–Prendergast gets no credit for it but that was an outstanding draft pick, one of his very best.
  • Grebeshkov-Belov: The feature pairing tonight, Grebs because we need to see if he flags again after 30 minutes, and Belov because we’ve never seen him before. I’ll want to see how mobile Belov is, along with passing ability and that big shot, too. Fun stuff.
  • Fedun-Hunt: Interesting pairing, I think this duo probably gets the heave-ho after the game or early next week. Still, they’ve shown very well and Fedun specifically has given the organization a reason to think he could handle a mid-season callup. Hunt entered as something of an unknown, now he’s reminding old timers like me of men like Reijo Ruotsalainen. There’s nothing wrong with his creativity.
  • LaBarbera-Rimmer: Fascinating choice for backup, this kid Rimmer must really have impressed them. LaBarbera has enjoyed a strong TC so far, I can’t say that’s a surprise. Rimmer is slated to play the second half of the game–HNIC, national television. So cool.

SEPARATION

upintheair1

I think what we’re seeing in tonight’s lineup is the final showing for several players. During training camp I’ve split the players into three categories, let’s have a look at those lists with men playing tonight underlined:

THE CERTAIN OILERS (17)

  • Goalies (2) Devan Dubnyk and Jason LaBarbera
  • Defensemen (5) Jeff Petry and Ladislav Smid, Justin Schultz and Andrew Ferense, Nick Schultz
  • Centermen (3) Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (inj), Sam Gagner, Boyd Gordon
  • Left Wing (3)  David Perron, Jesse Joensuu, Ryan Smyth
  • Right Wing (4) Jordan Eberle, Nail Yakupov, Ales Hemsky, Ryan Jones

I believe all of the starters tonight in this category are certain roster players. Sure, you could create a scenario where Ryan Jones doesn’t make the team, but is that realistic? So too with Ryan Smyth, it doesn’t really make sense. If they struggle for a month, it’s a different story.

THE UNCERTAIN OILERS (15)

  • Goalies (none)
  • Defensemen (7): Anton Belov, Denis Grebeshkov, Corey Potter, Phil Larsen, Oscar Klefbom, Martin Marincin, Taylor Fedun
  • Center (4): Anton Lander, Mark Arcobello, Will Acton, Andrew Miller
  • Left Wing (3): Linus Omark, Ryan Hamilton, Ben Eager
  • Right Wing (1): Mike Brown

This is the heart of the matter. Three defensemen playing tonight trying for two (or three) roster spots and the race for those jobs is as clear as mud this afternoon. A strong effort by any of these three could impact the players not on the ice tonight, and I do think the Russians have an inside track on the 6-7 jobs (don’t know what order). This could be the last game for Fedun before heading south. Among the forwards, this is a big night for Acton–he must be close–and you can say the same thing about Hamilton (I think he pretty much has a job now). Mike Brown probably makes the team.

THE OUTSIDERS (8)

  • Goalies (4): Richard Bachman, Olivier Roy, Tyler Bunz, Ty Rimmer
  • Defensemen (6): Brad Hunt, Martin Gernat, Brandon Davidson, David Musil, Darnell Nurse, Joey Leach
  • Centermen (3): Ryan Martindale, CJ Stretch, Travis Ewanyk
  • Left Wing (5): Curtis Hamilton, Austin Fyten, Kale Kessy, Mitchell Moroz, Jujhar Khaira
  • Right Wing (4): Tyler Pitlick, Matt Ford, Derek Nesbitt, Cameron Abney

I think there’s plenty of news in this category. Martindale and Hamilton are just waiting for the next wave of cuts, Pitlick may be in that group but he certainly played well enough to impress Eakins on some level. The guys playing tonight in this category could also be sent down tomorrow without a lot of fuss (Nurse’s performance aside).

LIKELY CUTS

G Richard Bachman, G Ty Rimmer, D Brad Hunt, D Darnell Nurse, C Ryan Martindale, L Curtis Hamilton, F Jujhar Khaira, R Tyler Pitlick, C Andrew Miller, C Anton Lander, L Linus Omark.

Yakupov breaks Schroeder’s legs with a slapper. Ouch.

  2. rich says:

That one will leave a mark. .

  3. pboy says:

Yak just broke that guy. I hope he pulls an Ivan Drago and skates by the Dys bench, “if he dies, he dies”.

  4. BlacqueJacque says:

I don’t know what Canuck blocked that shot, but I think he didn’t like the taste of Nail Biscuit.

  5. Bulging Twine says:

I hope Eakins helps Hall eliminate the giveaway from his game. So many giveaways.

  6. VanOil says:

Yak might cause more injuries than Wiese in his career. We need some of those Tennis serve speed displays at Rexall

  7. Lucinius says:

    Oilers will win the Stanley.

They will simply let Yak tee off 20-30 times a game, every game.

By the end of the season the Cup will default to the Oilers for them being the only team able to ice skaters.

  8. Racki says:

You put one of ours in the hospital, Yakupov puts one of yours in the morgue!

  9. Oilanderp says:

If you watch the slow motion of that shot block you can see the Canuck guy’s skeleton jump out of his body and go over the glass.

  10. striatic says:

    Brown is wearing an A?

  11. doritogrande says:

    Jones. Idiot.

  12. VanOil says:

    Oilanderp:

    Great, just great

  13. Lowetide says:

Jones with an unfortunate penalty there.

  14. Racki says:

Oh man, almost another shorty there.. how did Gagner not score?

  15. striatic says:

can the skill guys PK always, please?

Jones does the Oilers a favour putting them on the PK.

  16. Lucinius says:

    Gagner robbed!

    ROBBED!

God I love skill on the pk finally.

  17. VanOil says:

This is like the 80s Oilers PK.

  18. striatic says:

    Lowetide:
Jones with an unfortunate penalty there.

or fortunate, given the state of the Vancouver PP

  19. LMHF#1 says:

Love the skill on the PK. We’ve been sayin it.

  20. Lowetide says:

I like Belov. I’m not certain if I can tell you a lot about him beyond passing, mobility and pretty good size, but he’s looking like a hockey player out there.

  21. Andropod says:

Does Rimmer inspire more confidence than LaBarbera in anyone else? ,

  22. pboy says:

I’m really seeing Hunt good tonight.

    Atta boy Nurse!

  23. Lowetide says:

Haha! Nurse wrecks a guy. BEauty!

  24. Racki says:

    Lowetide:
I like Belov. I’m not certain if I can tell you a lot about him beyond passing, mobility and pretty good size, but he’s looking like a hockey player out there.

Probably a good accomplishment, when paired with Grebeshkov.

  25. Racki says:

    HEMSKKKY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo….Ooooooo…

  26. doritogrande says:

    Fuck. Shoot the puck Hemsky!

  27. Lowetide says:

Oilers are beginning to push the river here.

  28. Lucinius says:

Surprised no penalty drawn on the Hemsky chance. Canuck stick looked to be around his hands.

  29. khildahl says:

Looks like Hemsky got hooked there.

  30. Racki says:

I like this fellow Hamilton, so far..

  31. doritogrande says:

Now that was a hell of a zone clear from Belov there. Please tell me someone else saw that.

  32. Lowetide says:

I think Ryan Hamilton makes this team. I’m a little more convinced of him than Ryan Jones.

  33. striatic says:

Yakupov is all over the ice like Nightcrawler.

  34. bookje says:

    pboy:
Grebs isn’t going to see any NHL action this season or probably ever again. He’s been terrible in every game so far.

Perron is going to be a beauty here though.

No, I suspect he will just spend a lot of time admiring the $1.5 million that MacT gifted him. I hope MacT learns not to overlook recent performance again.

  35. bill needle says:

Hemsky couldn’t find someone to pass to.

  36. Racki says:

    PAD SAVE BY RIMMMMER!

  37. Lucinius says:

Man, the Canucks are getting superb puck luck around their own net.

  38. Bulging Twine says:

    Hunt is solid

  39. bookje says:

After watching Belov, I now know the Oilers will make the playoffs!

    That’s for you Sjeve!

  40. rich says:

    @ Doritogrande:

Saw that as well. Belov has been very impressive.

  41. Andropod says:

    Whose injured?

  42. Nightman_ says:

    who’s down? hopefully an ahler

  43. Lowetide says:

Rimmer is looking very good, I think he gets a contract. Who’s hurt?

  44. Racki says:

    bill needle:
Hemsky couldn’t find someone to pass to.

    Hemsky brain process:

    *beep beep beep…*
    Targetting player to pass to…

    Searching………..
    Searching…………

Player not found, dump it in the corner.

  45. Andropod says:

    Is it a 5 something?

  46. Nightman_ says:

    gagner high stick

  47. Manitoba Oilers says:

    Just a high stick

  48. Mr DeBakey says:

Grebs has had a very good 2nd Period.

  49. Lucinius says:

    Gee… Canuck being dirty! Shock.

  50. doritogrande says:

I really like Fedun. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to do this last year when we had absolutely no depth. Now he’s got 10 guys to go through.

  51. rich says:

Kassian is a douche bag. No wonder Vancouver likes him.

  52. Andropod says:

nuks seem to be teaching the oil how to converge on the puck

  53. Scotty LaDouche says:

If a waterbug and a M1 Abrams tank ever had a child, it would be Yakupov.

  54. Lowetide says:

Mark Lee: “Perron with his first as an Oiler!”

    It’s his third. Sigh.

  55. James says:

    Racki,

Yeah, I don’t disagree. It’s a start though, and coupled with a some other plays makes for a good showing for Brown. I’d have to watch the fight in slo-mo to see if Brown popped him, but lord knows I don’t want to be THAT guy.

  56. Lloyd B. says:

This is definitely the Canucks B team but if we play like this all year !!!!

  57. striatic says:

bookje: No, I suspect he will just spend a lot of time admiring the $1.5 million that MacT gifted him.I hope MacT learns not to overlook recent performance again.

i don’t get the antipathy for Jones. he’s got better fancy stats than a lot of guys, and he’s an offensive threat in the bottom 6.

it is the “cherry picking”, right? granted i’ve seen him do that but i’ve also not seen in reflected in the fancy stats more than any other player.

it is the “unsustainable shooting percentage”, right? getting most of your goals in the paint leads to oddly high shooting percentages, see Franzen, Johan.

    i really don’t understand it.

  58. khildahl says:

    Lowetide:
Mark Lee: “Perron with his first as an Oiler!”

    It’s his third. Sigh.

    As always, the CBC A-Team.

  59. doritogrande says:

    Scotty LaDouche:
If a waterbug and a M1 Abrams tank ever had a child, it would be Yakupov.

And we said selective breeding wouldn’t amount to anything. Russia’s really on the cutting edge. That shot could be militarized.

  60. James says:

Off-topic: what are your thoughts on the hybrid icing, all? Can’t see it making it through the NHLPA, but Fedun racing back to the sound of an early whistle has made me smile a couple of times.

    Romulus Apotheosis,

I’ve been reading this lovely blog for three years and just created an account tonight to tell you I laughed at your anecdote. Friggin soapworm.

    Also, Oilers.

    Ha!

you’re welcome and welcome! stick around, it will may your life better.

  62. LMHF#1 says:

Starting the Ty Rimmer for backup campaign.

  63. Scotty LaDouche says:

He was referring to Grebeshkov, the other guy gifted a contract.

  64. VanOil says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

I still can’t get your Sheena Easton link from this morning out of my mind. I might need therapy.

  65. Lowetide says:

    LMHF#1:
Starting the Ty Rimmer for backup campaign.

    He’s been very good.

  66. striatic says:

    Scotty LaDouche,

i see that now. i saw 1.5 after LTs comment and assumed Jones.

  67. Lucinius says:

    James,

I like hybrid icing; if the NHL/NHLPA don’t bring it into the regular season they are bloody morons.

It improves player safety, speeds up the game and retains the offensive chances on beating the defense-man to the puck.

    No down-side, imo.

  68. doritogrande says:

Love the dig at Terry Jones. Stay classy silver fox.

  69. striatic says:

    Lucinius,

the only downside is that sometimes refs make the wrong judgement call, but that’s already a problem with regular touch icing.

  70. Reg Dunlop says:

Yak will start wasting a few shots around defencemen’s ears like Al Macinnis used to. He will get LOTS of room then.

Petry has had a good little game tonight, even though the canucks are sitting half their squad. In fact, I think the canucks will look overmatched against the oil even when they dress all their players. The future is finally here.

  71. Lucinius says:

    striatic,

Refs making the wrong judgement call is a problem with almost everything the refs have sway over. To be honest, however, in the seven or so preseason game I’ve watched so far the refs have done a decent job on the hybrid icing calls.

  72. Lowetide says:

striatic: i don’t get the antipathy for Jones. he’s got better fancy stats than a lot of guys, and he’s an offensive threat in the bottom 6.

    i really don’t understand it.

I’m not a Jones guy, but I do think there’s a chance he’s going to have a terrific season. This is a guy who had professional extinction as a possibility with that eye injury, suspect he’s as motivated as anyone.

What I SEE though is (and WG said it better than me) is a player who is a step slower than I remember.

  73. Romulus Apotheosis says:

God, I hate the nucks. THey ice a bunch of goons, scrubs and twerbs. the twerbs are the worst.

They make you want to kill instead of win… I hate that. fuck those dicks.

That aside… one period of Belov… wow… better than I expected (knock on wood) given everything.

Rimmer is getting a contract of some kind.

    Jones was a big mistake

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwQW3KW3DCc

The overhaul of the bottom 6 didn’t cut deep enough. Jones, Eager, Brown and maybe even Smyth should have been upgraded.

I just hope no one dies tonight. This is an injury prevention game.

  74. Lloyd B. says:

Like to see the strategy to take advantage of the no touch icing for offence. Fire it in to the cherry picker. Another way to break the trap.

  75. Oilanderp says:

    James,

Love hybrid icing. The few times that the wrong call was made will more than make up for the injuries prevented.

  76. Romulus Apotheosis says:

On the other hand, three Nucks have been injured today too. Booth out this morning, Jensen (after fight with Brown) and Shroeder (took that Yak bomb…… ouch.) out during the game.

  78. Bulging Twine says:

    Is Shinkaruk Steve Ott’s son?

  79. Lowetide says:

Gagner out for the rest of the game. Idiotic Canucks with their stupid sticks and no brains

  80. Andropod says:

I loved that Yak shot. almost went right through Schroeder. Hope Gags returns.

  81. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    I’d prefer simple no-touch icing.

  82. VanOil says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

She is speaking Glaswegian more directly than Sheena!

  83. Racki says:

YoungOil: On the other hand, three Nucks have been injured today too. Booth out this morning, Jensen (after fight with Brown) and Shroeder (took that Yak bomb…… ouch.) out during the game.

That was Weiss that was hurt after fighting Brown (he’s back in the game now too).

Gagner done for the game.. damn… maybe for precautionary reasons, since it was a pretty hard shot in the head area. I assume some chiclets were lost too. No need to play hurt in a meaningless game.

  84. striatic says:

can you get concussed from a stick to the mouth?

  85. RexLibris says:

Can we switch Grebeshkov for Tom Gilbert for the 6-7 D?

  86. RexLibris says:

    jones… of course.

    what happened with petry there?

  88. Lowetide says:

Ryan Hamilton on the PP standing in front of the net, I think he’s going to make the team. Ryan Jones takes a penalty on the back check.

  89. Racki says:

Terrible zone entry there on that Petry led rush…. too much dipsee-doodling with the puck near the blue line.

  90. RexLibris says:

Oops. My bad. Mixed up the names. But Jensen is injured.

I agree.. liking what I see from Hamilton. Unlike yourself (based on a comment of yours earlier), I like Ryan Jones.. but hard to defend him after this game. He does look like he’s lost a step. I’m hoping he can turn it around though… good guy, as we all know.. hate to see him struggling.

  93. Racki says:

Hemsky had a rush on the last PP that he timed perfectly with Hall’s entry across the blueline. Can’t remember the last time that happened.

  95. Gret99zky says:

CBC can go the way of the dodo and leaded gasoline.

  96. Andropod says:

I like Jones too, but we need to ice the BPA’s if we really want to win.

  97. Lowetide says:

Nurse won’t make this team–Belov is #6 I’d bet–but you can see what he brings. Rangy guy who can bust it out with a couple of quick steps, pass the puck and play it tough. Plus the wingspan.

    Nice.

I like Jones, but I don’t really care about him… and his moral quest to prove his supporters were right seems crass to me. weird even for such a seemingly happy-go-lucky guy.

Edit: apparently it was a spear to the yarbles.

this game has been very disappointing.

  112. RexLibris says:

Beautiful pass to the point there.

  113. Andropod says:

We need Nuge in the PP big time.

  114. Lowetide says:

Hall doesn’t have a shot in this game and he’s still having an impact. Still, one of his quieter games imo.

  116. rich says:

He’s still better than Charlie Simmer.

  124. Romulus Apotheosis says:

It would be nice if the refs called that late crosscheck on Hemksy by Kassian was actually a penalty.

  125. khildahl says:

RexLibris: He’s still better than Charlie Simmer.

    So’s my blind dog.

  126. doritogrande says:

Probably haven’t been paying enough attention to the Canucks’ young guys tonight. Anyone think that Horvat’s been good enough to be worth Schneider?

  127. striatic says:

Rimmer’s pads look less than legal.

  128. RexLibris says:

Is Khaira playing tonight? Thought I saw him a few times but nothing recently.

  129. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Damn… this fucking Rogers commercial again… just play the fucking Funkadelic song!!!!!!!!

    I hate life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  130. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    doritogrande:
Probably haven’t been paying enough attention to the Canucks’ young guys tonight. Anyone think that Horvat’s been good enough to be worth Schneider?

That cheque isn’t going to be cashed for several years… hold on to your chips.

  131. Bulging Twine says:

    Perron is a typical Canuck

  132. striatic says:

    doritogrande,

Horvat is really young. too early to say but it looks like there is a non zero chance it was a good trade.

    he hasn’t been terrible.

  133. RexLibris says:

    khildahl: So’s my blind dog.

I’d rather listen to your dog do Flames colour analysis than Simmer’s “keep your feet moving, go to the net, keep your stick on the ice, etc”

  134. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    khildahl:
Hrudey’s getting full use of the cliche-o-tron tonight.

I swear he was a decent commentator when he only talked between periods.

agreed. he’s a solid studio commentator… but on the fly, he’s not very good.

  135. LMHF#1 says:

    Lowetide:
Hall doesn’t have a shot in this game and he’s still having an impact. Still, one of his quieter games imo.

An impact, yes, but he’s struggling mightily with the puck. Guessing a new stick or distracted learning C.

  136. doritogrande says:

Weiss gets mugged by three guys, takes penalty.

Who was commenting about Karma again?

  137. Oilanderp says:

Perron roughing up poor little Weise har har go to the box Weise.

  138. speeds says:

    Bulging Twine:
    Is Shinkaruk Steve Ott’s son?

Still kind of surprised he slid to 24OV. I mean, it seems like someone slides every year, but the potential is there that VAN picked a pretty good player.

  139. RexLibris says:

Hunt could be lethal in the AHL.

  140. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    Hemsky to Hall…

this is going to connect eventually… magic… is what it is.

  141. RexLibris says:

    doritogrande:
Weiss gets mugged by three guys, takes penalty.

Who was commenting about Karma again?

    Guilty. ;)

  142. Romulus Apotheosis says:

belov with a great D play

  143. Bulging Twine says:

hahah yes! Belov is an NHLer!

  144. striatic says:

Belov is an Oiler for sure. at least one good thing coming out of this game.

  145. Romulus Apotheosis says:

“Jones gets it inside the line briefly”

    sounds about right.

  146. Racki says:

Romulus Apotheosis: I think the whole victimology thing kinda sucks… but, it’s not a big deal.

Ahhh, I get you. I took it more as an admission that he wasn’t good last year and wanted to redeem himself to his supporters, but I can easily see how it can be taken as shoving it to his critics. Either way, I don’t think it’s too huge a deal, but I get what you’re saying though now.

  147. Andropod says:

    doritogrande,

Never mind Karma, Khaira pissed him off tonight.

  148. Lloyd B. says:

We’re way better than this B team the Canucks sent us. Finally. Can’t wait to see how the big boys go. Smyth !!! Damn and now they get one. AND NOW YAK !!

  149. RexLibris says:

Just realized what this roster is missing tonight – a Finn.

  150. striatic says:

    finally, jesus.

  151. Racki says:

I’ll throw some love out there for Hunt. He’s played pretty good offensively. He’s pinched in and been beaten at least a couple times though, I think, but he seems good at getting back too though. At worst, he’ll be a good player for OKC. At best, he could be our own Torey Krug, perhaps.

    Woot, smytty!

  152. RexLibris says:

    striatic:
Belov is an Oiler for sure. at least one good thing coming out of this game.

Yeah, that seems like a given, at least so far.

    Smyth. Classic.

  153. doritogrande says:

    Ah. The ol’ Greassssy.

  154. khildahl says:

    FINALLY.

  155. Andropod says:

    Smytty does what Smytty does!

  156. Lowetide says:

    On the bubble:

    1. Khaira–Didn’t really notice him. I like his resume, suspect he’ll show better next fall.
    2. R Hamilton–I’m convinced he makes this team.
    3. Acton–He’s been good not great. It’s the story of his TC.
    4. Jones–I wonder if he’s picked up some kind of injury. didn’t have zip tonight.
    5. Brown–Did nothing for me tonight.
    6. Nurse–If he was 20, I’d have him in the opening night lineup.
    7. Belov–NA debut was very good.
    8. Grebeshkov–Like Jones, the job may be slipping away.
    9. Hunt–Some good things, I think he was a little exposed tonight.
    10. Fedun–Good game, assist, not enough high notes.
    11. LaBarbera–Uneven night, no pressure on his job at all.
    12. Rimmer–Earned a contract this TC.

    Smyth!

  157. LMHF#1 says:

Fedun is having a hell of a game.

  158. Racki says:

I don’t really want to hear “That big straight stick!” said so emphatically by Mark Lee

  159. Lucinius says:

    Smytty. heh.

But this game is nowhere as close as it looks on the scoreboard. It should be something like 7-3.

  160. striatic says:

and Lack almost stopped that one too. Lack has been pretty good i think.

    and .. damn.

  161. RexLibris says:

    Rebound control.

  162. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Belov didn’t look great there… but no one else did either.

  163. YoungOil says:

why……..Rimmer……. demolish that bronze statue you guys were building.

  164. Gret99zky says:

    yak city

  165. Lucinius says:

    YAK!

  166. Bulging Twine says:

    Nice shift

    Nice Khaira

  167. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    Yak!!!!!!!!!!

  168. Lowetide says:

Well damn I wrote my review and then Khaira had a wonderful moment with Ryan Hamilton. Yakupov with the finish.

  169. RexLibris says:

    Lowetide:

    Smyth!

Khaira. You were saying LT. ;)

    Sorry, couldn’t resist that one.

  170. doritogrande says:

    Ahh, the change-up.

  171. Gret99zky says:

man that kid like to score goals

  172. Racki says:

    That goal was absofuckinglutely delicious.

What a pass by Khaira, and what a finish by Yak!

  173. rich says:

    Yak City!

  174. RexLibris says:

I don’t think that puck even came to Yakupov before he was shooting it. Off the stick so fast!

  175. doritogrande says:

Kharia did a great job with his head on a swivel. Coming out behind the net looked up as he was carving, saw Yak, and the rest is history.

  176. Lowetide says:

Rex: lol. You’d think I’d learn after all these years. :-)

  177. Andropod says:

    YoungOil:
why……..Rimmer……. demolish that bronze statue you guys were building.

    Damn those small samples!

  178. Jon K says:

Oh baby. That play was a thing of beauty. CBC keeps talking about Hamilton but I think Khaira is the story of that play. Wow.

  179. RexLibris says:

Good for Acton. Now, Will, tell your kids Luongo was in net with a shutout on the board.

  180. Lucinius says:

    Acton better buy Hemsky dinner.

  181. RexLibris says:

    Jon K:
Oh baby. That play was a thing of beauty. CBC keeps talking about Hamilton but I think Khaira is the story of that play. Wow.

That’s because they don’t want to butcher his name any further.

  182. Lowetide says:

Will Acton. Nice. Hemsky with the assist.

  183. Jon K says:

As a side note, I wish they wouldn’t let Hrudey drink during the broadcast. It’s showing tonight.

  184. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    RexLibris:
Just realized what this roster is missing tonight – a Finn.

    Joensuu?

  185. RexLibris says:

    Jon K:
As a side note, I wish they wouldn’t let Hrudey drink during the broadcast. It’s showing tonight.

Maybe they don’t and that’s the problem. Most guys are far more interesting to listen to when they’ve had a few.

  186. RexLibris says:

    Romulus Apotheosis: Joensuu?

    Winner Winner, chicken dinner!

  187. Bulging Twine says:

    #6 Belov
    #7 Larsen or Hunt

  188. striatic says:

now we wait to hear about Gagner.

if he’s out to start the season, yikes.

hopefully keeping him off the bench was just about being cautious.

  189. RexLibris says:

    Lowetide,

Read your ON piece about the Barons just now. Thanks for the info on Pelss, I might try to get to that game now. Don’t know why, but his story resonated with me even when he was with the Oil Kings.

  190. speeds says:

Didn’t really look like Khaira had trouble with the size and strength of the opposition on that play there? Think the Oilers send him down to OKC, to see if he can hang at that level, before sending him back to the WHL?

  191. Bulging Twine says:

    Smyth #4 Center

  192. RexLibris says:

    striatic:
now we wait to hear about Gagner.

if he’s out to start the season, yikes.

hopefully keeping him off the bench was just about being cautious.

Guessing it was some emergency dental work and no sense trying to be a hero in the preseason.

  193. Racki says:

Hopefully Sam Gagner doesn’t have the Cogliano-lip now

  194. Henry says:

    striatic,

I’m worried about him too. Broken jaw is 6 weeks and 20 lbs lost because you can’t eat. Happened to me.

  195. RexLibris says:

    speeds,

I’d get him to the WHL straight away and let him acclimate to that level rather than move him around hither and yon.

  196. striatic says:

    Bulging Twine,

Hunt got a lot of PP time tonight and had the second most minutes on the team, just a hair behind Petry.

team must really like him, more than Grebeshkov it seems.

  197. wordbird says:

    Uh oh, Grebeshkov.

    Brown? Meh.
    Hamilton? Meh.
    Acton? Meh.

won’t someone win a 4th line spot? I’d say Anton Lander lives to see another day…

  198. Romulus Apotheosis says:

So… can we “bury” Jones and Grebs contracts if they don’t get picked up?

  199. Lowetide says:

    speeds:
Didn’t really look like Khaira had trouble with the size and strength of the opposition on that play there?Think the Oilers send him down to OKC, to see if he can hang at that level, before sending him back to the WHL?

He sure looked good on that goal. I don’t know the answer, though.

  200. Andropod says:

A spot was Grebs to lose and it looks like he just did that.
