DEVILS AT OILERS G3, 13-14

The return of baby Nuge–for some reason he seems to be the one we’ll worry over–is a moment to celebrate any time. With the Oilers on the outskirts of Nowhere Land, getting all hands on deck is vital and RNH’s return is (rightly) being touted as a major help in the process.

 POSSIBLE LINEUP

  • RNH-Hall-Eberle (my guess is they’ll want a line they can run ragged and that can push the river)
  • Gordon-Perron-Hemsky (this line looks like….victory)
  • Arcobello-Jonesuu/Hamilton/Smyth-Yakupov (this is the ‘life is like a box of chocolates’ line)
  • Acton-Gazdic-Brown (coach seems pleased)
  • Smid-Petry
  • Ference/Davidson-Schultz
  • N Schultz-Belov
  • LaBarbera

I really like the top 2 lines, and Arcobello-Joensuu are the best available for the next spot in the batting order. Yakupov needs to have better linemates and he will when Gagner gets back but for now he’s going to be a little shy of support. On the blueline, Ference and Smid had maintenance days and I don’t think it was because they’d booked a spa day. You’ll want to be listening for any lineup changes due to injury, and those two are the primary worries. Might be that flu that’s been going around.

davidson

The Davidson recall is a curio of some proportions. The club’s next reasonable recall order might be something like Fedun, Marincin, Davidson and Klefbom likely to jump to the front of the line when he’s ready. So, for them to bring Davidson up, there must have been specific need (LH stay at home) beyond Denis Grebeshkov is should be available by now. So a callup for Davidson may not mean game action, but rather insurance ala Ryan Hamilton.

sbm1

I do think Dubnyk might be in a little trouble as an Oiler. The club was looking for an upgrade during the summer and now we’re looking at LaBarbera getting a start against New Jersey. If JL wins, then he starts game four in my opinion. If the LaBarbera train begins to roll, and DD doesn’t get back in then I think we’re looking at a change. If he does get back in and struggles again, it’ll be a case of “it’s nobody’s fault, but….” and we all know how that ends. I state once again he’s a good NHL goaltender, slightly above or average, but at this point that doesn’t mean one damn thing. Bad timing for the Dubey, no doubts about it.

Dallas Eakins

Dallas Eakins media conferences are must see television. Yesterday’s Hemsky tribute, handling of Dubnyk and Smyth hot potato’s and his explaining the process with Taylor Hall are all magical. Remind me that if this team makes the playoffs to go back to these early season scrums for the foundation–Eakins is laying it out right now. Beautiful.

This is why we’re going to love Eakins. At the media availability yesterday, he talked about changes and framed it as moving Nuge into a comfortable slot and then low played the Hall line’s troubles. Now, let’s run that through the chances for-against actual factual of games one and two:

  1. Arcobello 33-18 (64.7%)
  2. Gazdic 8-5 (61.5%)
  3. Yakupov 26-18 (59.1%)
  4. Eberle 35-26 (57.4%)
  5. Perron 33-27 (55%)
  6. Gordon 22-22 (50%)
  7. Mike Brown 5-6 (45.5%)
  8. Joensuu 16-20 (44.4%)
  9. Hall 21-28 (42.9%)
  10. Acton 4-7 (36.4%)
  11. Hemsky 13-25 (34.2%)
  12. Smyth 13-26 (33.3%)

There’s been no finger pointing, there has been resistance (you can tell because he said so in the media conference) but he’s treating everyone like an adult and giving the media nothing. And he’s getting good mileage from the 2-3-4 lines, with a small tweak (above) this club could turn things around quickly. I expect we’ll see a strong effort tonight.

pitlick31-600x360

Tyler Pitlick played center Saturday, scored a SH goal and is the only plus player on the team. So there’s that. Fedun apparently is playing well again and Ryan Martindale has 2 points in 2 games.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

Busy day on the show, 10-noon on TSN 1260. Scheduled to appear:

  • Tyler Dellow from mc79 hockey. Hall C, Dubnyk, Eakins in front of a mic, what to expect tonight, Glenn Healy.
  • Eric Rodgers from Tend the Farm. Barons played their first two regular season games this weekend, we’ll break it down.
  • Travis Yost from Hockeybuzz. Senators started well and are looking for a strong season.
  • Lisa McRitchie from Kukla’s Korner. Lisa and I will talk about some fast starting junior players.

Text 10-1260 and @Lowetide_ on twitter. This is going to be an interesting morning, we’ll have any lineup updates too (they usually roll in between 10 and 11).

Lowetide: I don’t know that the Oilers will win–it would be nice to be facing a ‘sisters of the poor’ club tonight–but suspect this will be a fine Oiler effort.

Based on fan response to the first two games, we can predict one of two outcomes:

Loss: Fire everybody! Start the rebuild over!

    Win: Plan the parade!

I do not foresee any other possibilities.

Apparently not the process of rocket-building, but the relative quality of the parts used.

  10. Lowetide says:

Nice pace, responsible puck passing, nothing dangerous and a chance or two. Now 4line.

  11. Yukio says:

Some chaos in the opening minutes.

  12. Lowetide says:

    Jagr. Le sigh.

  13. Lucinius says:

Gee, no Hemsky and that line still struggling. Being saddled with Hemsky really brought that line down.

  14. Kris11 says:

    Boooo! I want a refund.

  15. khildahl says:

    Lowetide:
    Jagr. Le sigh.

At least he got it out of the way early instead of late in the third.

  16. russ99 says:

    Great start, guys.

  17. Yukio says:

The season was over when Joensuu got injured.

  18. Zipdot says:

Oilers … put your pants on, please.

  19. Lucinius says:

Hall still needs to learn to look before he passes.

  20. Kris11 says:

    Jordan Moreau.

  21. Kris11 says:

That big no-look, cross ice pass in the neutral zone is kind of high risk, low reward, and Hall seems fine with it.

  22. russ99 says:

Ugh. Gonna be a long season…

  23. Lowetide says:

Well, at least Dubnyk isn’t the only one with a shitty save percentage.

  24. Lowetide says:

    Shots 5-0 Devils.

  25. VanOil says:

Nuge -2 already. This could get ugly.

  26. Kris11 says:

The great thing about NJ is that historically they are not good at keeping a 2 goal lead.

  27. bookje says:

I’ve recently come around to LT’s idea of a scoreless first period.

  28. russ99 says:

But hey, we can hit and fight! That’s important.

  32. Kris11 says:

Great move Acton. Now it will be 3-0.

  33. Lowetide says:

Really nice sequence there by Nuge on the PK. That’s what Dave Keon did his whole career, upset the offense before they could get started.

  34. jake70 says:

Pretty aggressive PK ….. watch Eakins pull the goalie…lol.

  35. steveb12344 says:

Lucinius: We need a Smid hat trick.

Smid hat-trick= 3 goals in same season.

  36. Zipdot says:

Woodguy – please tell us it’s ok – I’m freaking out!!

  38. bendelson says:

Maybe we will see a solid 40 minutes?

(hard to believe they were not ready to start this game but alas, they were not ready to start this game).

  39. Henry says:

    Zipdot,

No, trade for Pronger. It worked once.

  40. Yukio says:

The Nuge shall wreak havoc on this powerplay chance.

  41. Southern Oil says:

    Dammit – pull Dubnyk … oh wait…

  42. Lucinius says:

    steveb12344,

Naw, Smid hat trick is more like a once in a life-time event and the fourth seal leading to the apocalypse.

  43. Lowetide says:

It’s 2-0 and NJD are a very good team with the lead, but the Oilers have to test Brodeur here. They’ve done exactly what they can’t do–play a passive offensive game.

  44. OilBuzz says:

    Need possession…

  45. russ99 says:

    Man are they flat.

  46. Lucinius says:

Well, that first powerplay unit looks pretty bad. Gotta get that rust gone.

  47. danny says:

I was busted admiring a lovely looking blonde at YYZ last week. I noticed a 30-something attractive lady in the customs line across from mine, and paused for an extended gawk… not THAT long but long enough for her man to bust me… it was kind of awkward, but kinda cool because it was CUJO. Being from the east coast, seeing an Oiler/ex-Oiler doesn’t happen. Cujo seemed much taller than I thought he was as a player.

  48. VanOil says:

    yeah we got a shot!!!

  49. OilBuzz says:

Hall looking much better on the wing

  50. Pablo Aimar says:

Was that Hamilton on the PP instead of Yakupov? Lol.

  51. Kris11 says:

    Like RNH.

  52. Nostradumbass says:

Can Eakins stick to finding the best 18 to dress every night, finding line combos that work and the maybe a little line matching to get the most advantageous match up?

    Enough og the @#@$@# experiments

I couldn’t think of two players lesd suitable for the PK right now than Hemsky and RNH

  53. Kris11 says:

Yak would appear to have sideburns.

  54. Lowetide says:

Things are starting to pop a little here, Nuge is making some plays, Hall is flying and Eberle has had a chance. Important for LaBarbera to keep it at 2 down here for awhile.

  55. danny says:

    Petry looked pretty bad there.

  56. smellyglove says:

Watching the NJ feed. Just wow.

    “Dubey-neck”, “Smit”. Terrible commentary.

  57. russ99 says:

Guys, the dumping doesn’t work against a defensive-savvy team like NJ.

I wonder how many periods it will take them to figure that out.

  58. Oilanderp says:

  67. russ99 says:

Oh man, open net! Hemmer should have buried it

  68. Kris11 says:

    Oh, sorry.

  69. Lowetide says:

Nice few minutes now, Oilers seem to be finding the range. Now they need a goal and JL has to stone the Devils.

  70. Henry says:

    hunter1909:

Well, Lowe did say 2016 three years ago.

  71. OilBuzz says:

Gordon is a battler, oh my

  72. khildahl says:

Hall needs to start shooting at the goalie so his high and wide shots hit the corners.

  73. Oilanderp says:

Man, if we could only have the powerplay for the entire game every game… we’d start getting as many scoring chances as the other team.

  74. russ99 says:

Looking better. These guys seem to be starting to break through the dreck.

  75. Kris11 says:

  77. russ99 says:

Henry: Well, Lowe did say 2016 three years ago.

When’s the new arena opening? :)

  78. Lowetide says:

8-7 SOG for the Oilers, much of that on the PP. Devils lead, great goal by one of the all time greats and a nice PP snipe by the former Red Wing. I do’nt think the Oilers win this game (2-0 down to a very good defensive team) but did like their try as the period wore on.

    More, please.

  79. SK Oiler Fan says:

How could they get worse? I counted twice where they made 2 passes in a row that period.
Definition of over pursue on the pk.
They’re gap control with the puck going either way is atrocious. the f and d are 2 zones apart.
pp needs simplifying when your struggling.
    Junior B hockey.

Eakin’s really made a difference: The team’s already in mid-season form.

  83. Lowetide says:

    From Friedman’s 30

    10. A bit more on Mark Messier: he will be re-joining the Oilers’ organization as some kind of consultant. He is not moving back to Edmonton and will, from what I understand, remain involved with the Kingsbridge Ice Center in New York.

  84. Clarence Oveur says:

Why does this feel like it has 3-1 loss written all over it?

  85. Lowetide says:

    Also

    11. Jason LaBarbera starts for the Oilers Monday night against New Jersey. Dubnyk gets a break after a bad start to the season, and Edmonton may be in a tough spot here. Dubnyk is greatly affected by the equipment changes. His knees were exposed a little by the pad changes, and he was not comfortable with a thicker pad underneath his socks for protection. The enforcement of the “paddle size” (mentioned above) forced a last-minute stick change, too. It doesn’t excuse a 60-foot goal, but you can see how it messes with someone’s head. The Oilers need him to figure this out and fast. You can’t make the playoffs in October, but the last decade proves you can miss them in October.

  86. Lowetide says:

    13. Craig MacTavish showed great patience in the summer by not forcing an Ales Hemsky trade even though he wanted to. He will need that patience again. You could see the frustration on his face Saturday night in Vancouver — “not again!” — but when things are going bad, you get thrown anvils instead of lifejackets.

    Lol!!

Naw, I don’t see Moose kicking it in Mexico City sipping drinks from glasses with little umbrellas.

  93. smellyglove says:

I suspect a blood oath between the boys on the bus and Satan in the 1980s has led to this. The dynasty years’ players sold their souls for five cups. The other end of the bargain was that they would be doomed to live in an endless groundhog day scenario of managing a perpetually losing team.

  94. Lowetide says:

I’m hoping we see a strong second period, because the second half of the first period was pretty good imo. One period at a time.

  106. RexLibris says:

    Too bad for Yakupov.

Hopefully the eventual return of Gagner allows Yak to be relevant on this team…

Justin Schultz with a poor decision in his own end, 3-0 Devils. This game is kind of a continuation of the previous two–where the Oilers are doing some good things but the goals are going into their net and not the other guys.

The last few GM’s have been full of poo already.

  144. Andropod says:

Have they ever been worse than this? (Including Saturday)

  145. SK Oiler Fan says:

    godot10,

saw that as well. looking for the easy offense

  146. russ99 says:

This is approaching shift of doom territory.

  147. smellyglove says:

    NJ feed:

“Brodeur has a 0.903% lifetime save percentage against the Oilers, that’s outstanding, that’s likely why he gets the start tonight”.

  148. Oilanderp says:

    Sign Vinny Prospal now.

  149. RexLibris says:

Starting to think that working late doesn’t seem like such a bad thing.

Remember when everyone was saying that this team had now accumulated enough talent that it would be almost impossible to screw it up?

    …….

  150. Andropod says:

How about this: Every week OKC plays the Oil and the winner plays the next NHL game, loser plays the OKC game.

  151. russ99 says:

For reference, here’s the shift of doom:

    Andropod:
Have they ever been worse than this? (Including Saturday)

They were worse during the long road trip through the central/norris/midwest/whatever division without Horc last year. Maybe.

Maybe when Danny Syvret and Sebastian Bissalion were defensemen in 2007?

  153. Zelepukin says:

It’s astounding how horrible our D is playing. Every battle down-low is being lost, hanging onto the puck too long, horrible first passes…

  154. nez29 says:

    russ99,

First-time caller. Darn, this is hard to take. I’m not used to such lousy hometown sports–I ain’t from freakin’ Calgary. On the other hand, when does Bucky get promoted to head coach?

  155. Kris11 says:

I can see Yak or JSchultz getting sent down for a game to send a message.

  156. Nostradumbass says:

I hope Stauffer calls out these idiot fans who are booing, the nerve of entitled Oiler fans #growingpains

  157. godot10 says:

    Lucinius:
    godot10,

Except Hemsky, who was behind him.

Hemsky hung JSchultz out to dry with the pass with a forward on bearing down on Schultz, and then bolted up ice supplying no support. Hemsky gave him a hot potato.

  158. Zelepukin says:

Hemsky and Nuge are the only two who have been making a difference every shift.

  159. jake70 says:

Someone mentioned this here or at ON, maybe they are fatigued, given Eakins conditioning demands. Silly idea?

  160. Andropod says:

ChickenHawk! New name until he starts winning games.

  161. SK Oiler Fan says:

NJ D very good at forcing shots from the outside. It’s not as if they have a bunch of all stars back there either. Of course it helps when your forwards aren’t 2 zones away. When are these kids going to learn to consistently play a 200 ft game. oh It’s keep away time again.

  162. Gerta Rauss says:

Welcome aboard, but you should know that LT won’t tolerate that level of profanity around here..:)

  163. Oilanderp says:

    jake70,

I am fatigued, watching this same game over and over.

  164. rich says:

    Labarberra with a save!

  165. bookje says:

    This is boring.

  166. nez29 says:

    Gerta Rauss,

    rich,

    What profanity? Bucky?

  167. Andropod says:

    nez29,

Bucky’s a little less than popular on this board. :)

  168. Oilanderp says:

*checks to see if we still have our first round pick*

  169. Kris11 says:

You know, some observations. The game is pretty even, chances wise. NJ has the bounces going. Luck is a thing.

The Oilers top 3 F’s look excellent. The rest and the D are a mixed bag. Probably not enough for the playoffs, but not as bad as it seems right now.

  170. bookje says:

    Hall – really?

  171. SK Oiler Fan says:

11 fin shots and 6 came on the PP.

  172. OilBuzz says:

    Bench J.Shultz please

  173. jake70 says:

“The Oilers top 3 F’s look excellent.”

They need to make the oppo goalie make a save….too many wide shots.

  174. russ99 says:

    Kris11,

I’d think so too if there was any cohesion on both sides of the ice.

Seems to me the players aren’t buying the system, strips them of too much of their individuality. If we had a veteran core, it would be working better.

Eakins better simplify and adapt or it’s Renney all over again.

  175. nez29 says:

    Andropod,

    Andropod,

And not so popular with me…this team’s culture(Oil Change? lol) is in need of a revamp. Anybody else wonder why one of the ‘kids’ wasn’t given the captaincy? Oh yeah, Kev–I’m an 8-times a year paying customer, so my opinion actually counts, right???

  176. Andropod says:

You know, they did better in the 2nd than the first. Even if they don’t score any goals but don’t allow any either it will be something to build on.

  177. Lowetide says:

I hoped for a much better period than we got, Oilers let all the air out of their tires after goal #3. I’m not certain there’s much to say at this point, we know they have talent and we know they should be better than this based on their own recent past.

So, we wait. It can’t get much worse than 0-3 won-loss and 14-6 GF-GA can it? I don’t think it can, but am surprised they’re in this position again tonight.

  178. Zelepukin says:

    OilBuzz:
    Bench J.Shultz please

agreed. Lazy and being over confident with the puck, like how dare someone forecheck him when he has the puck.

  179. G Money says:

Two periods in the books, and I have two big questions:

    - Have the Oilers not practised any breakouts? They actually look far better than last years fire drill on retrieving the puck, but as soon as they have it, they seem to have no idea what to do with it. It would be a comedy if it weren’t so tragic.

    - Who drugged Hall, Eberle, Perron, Yak, and JSchultz? It’s not so much effort, it’s that they look asleep on their feet. Fighting the puck, missing wide open opportunities, missing the net by a mile. Only Hemsky and RNH seem to be undrugged.

  180. spoiler says:

Shots and attempts pretty close. Oil with 10 giveaways compared to the Devs 1.

Nuge with 2 mins more ice time than the next Oiler, J. Schultz, with just a shade short of 17 minutes already. Yak with no shots on net thus far. Eberle playing like he wants to be dropped a line.

  181. Lucinius says:

    godot10,

I re-watched the play; Hemsky wasn’t behind him, as I thought. However, the pass from Hemsky to J. Schultz was no grenade. It was obvious and textbook and Schultz was ready for it. However, instead of the safe play (behind the net), he went forward, in front of the net and then screwed up the pass as he came under pressure. After the turn over Hemsky was the forward who came back and took away the pass option.

Hemsky wasn’t to blame on that, at all. It was all on J. Schultz who, like Hall, has looked like ass so far this regular season.

  182. Nostradumbass says:

I’m tired of hearing about system play being the problem

This team doesn’t work hard enough, period.

Talent should supplement hard work, as is habit, this team just creates a lot of motion for the sake of motion. No purpose or drive to take pucks away from opponents or to get pucks to the net

3 shots in this circumstance is embarassing

  183. PaperDesigner says:

Has anyone noticed how many dump-ins this team is using? It’s amazing–they dump it in, New Jersey retrieves the puck, and the forechecking forward ends up chasing New Jersey uselessly.

I thought this team was supposed to be built around puck possession? Maybe they meant puck possession for the other team.

  184. linkfromhyrule says:

man so many of them just look lost out there, it’s like they’re overthinking it and unsure what to do.

J schultz looks awful out there

flashes of nice things, but so many signs that this is going to be another stinker.

    QUIT WITH THE TURNOVERS ALREADY

  185. bookje says:

    Lowetide,

Something is wrong – maybe the players don’t like the flavour of the new coach.

  186. russ99 says:

    PaperDesigner,

    In the first period:

    russ99:
Guys, the dumping doesn’t work against a defensive-savvy team like NJ.

I wonder how many periods it will take them to figure that out.

    Lol.

  187. Gerta Rauss says:

    Andropod:
    nez29,

Bucky’s a little less than popular on this board.

I was needling him about the use of the words “darn” and “freakin”..:)

    Nothing to do with Bucky.

  188. PaperDesigner says:

    bookje:
    Lowetide,

Something is wrong – maybe the players don’t like the flavour of the new coach.

Maybe Kevin Lowe will fire MacTavish and Eakins, stepping in as general manager and making Keith Acton head coach and vice president, who will, as his first act, make Will Acton our first line center.

It’s too early to say this is going to be another circus season, but the longer the losing goes, the more you think it might stick…

  189. fuzzy muppet says:

    this is brutal..

at what point should we be concerned?

    0-3 and confidence falling

  190. PaperDesigner says:

You know, it’s one thing to be not quite good enough, it’s another to make the 2013-2014 Flames look respectable by comparison.

  191. Lois Lowe says:

On the plus side, Nuge looks good!

  192. D says:

LT – I guess a lot of fans here aren’t surprised at all with this turn of events. These guys are talented, but they have no emotion or fire.

    Lowetide:

  193. Oilanderp says:

I think next period the Oil should take a slapshot at the head of the nearest Devil everytime they get the puck. If you’re going to give it back to them, you might as well make them pay for it.

  194. PaperDesigner says:

    russ99:
    PaperDesigner,

    In the first period:

    Lol.

    Apparently, at least two.

    *Facepalm*

  195. rich says:

Right now, with very few exceptions, this team is playing like a bunch of losers. Goalie gives up another weak goal…whoa is me. They’re turning this into excuses and are doing nothing to change the momentum of the game. You can talk 4th line doing it’s job (Stauffer is on the radio), but if the guys being paid the money aren’t going to step up and get it done, you are toast.

    What a bunch of losers..

  196. russ99 says:

    PaperDesigner,

On Sportsnet one of the between-periods commentators said an Oiler official said it may take up to 30 games for the players to really get on the same page as Eakins.

    Lord help us…

  197. PaperDesigner says:

    Lois Lowe:
On the plus side, Nuge looks good!

Apparently, the only problem is the other 22 roster players!

  198. steveb12344 says:

I don’t buy that, but do believe there’s some confusion out there and they definitely have forgotten how to wheel. Tonight it seems the skill has left the group, save for Nuge who just keeps rolling along on his first night back.
