It’s going to take 90-94 points, 37-40 wins, a lot of luck, hard work, blood, sweat and tears. And it all starts tonight, on a sweet October 1st with a fall chill, the promise of a new tomorrow, and a half dozen piss-cutters-in-waiting. The Edmonton Oilers are back in town. Azorcan3

  • L1: Hall-Smyth-Hemsky (maligned line has stood the test of pre-season)
  • L2: Arcobello-Perron-Eberle (Arcobello is a better bet than Colborne, but there’s a risk)
  • L3: Gordon-Joensuu-Yakupov (any offense from this line at evens is golden)
  • L4: Acton-Eager-Brown (if you boo Acton there’s no hope for you. Ever)
  • D1: Smid-Petry (A bounceback year is likely)
  • D2: Ference-J Schultz (greatness awaits)
  • D3: N Schultz-Belov (he comes from the land of the ice and snow)
  • G1: Dubnyk (based on pre-season rip jobs, I expect him to skate out with a blindfold) st1

I have the Oilers making the playoffs, and for me the reasons all run through Dallas Eakins. He’s a smart cookie, and based on what he’s said and done, Oiler fans can look forward to:

  1. The 1line running hot and heavy
  2. The 2line running hot and heavy
  3. The 3line running hot and heavy
  4. Stars playing on the PK
  5. Impact forwards >20 minutes
  6. seeing the goalie pulled sometime after the 10 minute mark of the third period when behind
  7. Puck retrieval at a premium
  8. Minute usage of the 4line
  9. Frank post-game answers to the camera
  10. Impatience
  11. Aggression
  12. Mobility
  13. Callups and send downs
  14. Fewer fights than you think
  15. Running the gifted ones ragged (why Ralph limited their time is beyond me)
  16. The second season

Craig MacTavish did a lot of work on the blue this summer, replaced Horcoff with Gordon (which was a big deal, capwise) and then dealt Paajarvi to hurry the future with Perron. The new hires tonight are:

  • David Perron, who lit up the pre-season with goals times goals times goals.
  • Mark Arcobello, who subs in for 89 and has the best chance he’ll ever get to shine.
  • Boyd Gordon, asked to bring calmness to chaos
  • Jesse Joensuu, the latest hope for size and skill
  • Will Acton, who is expected to do a little of everything
  • Andrew Ference, the new captain and face of the team: tough as nails, better he never saw “You’ve Got Mail”
  • Anton Belov, who might just be manna from heaven

I’m picking this team to make the playoffs because there’s too much good to be held back by the fiddle faddle any longer. Yes, it’s Taylor Hall but it’s also Nail Yakupov and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle and Justin Schultz and Sam Gagner and David Perron and Ales Hemsky and that’s 8 of them. I know there’s going to be bad nights, nights on the road when they can’t find the stage and sound out of time when they finally do, but there’s just too much. TOO much.

TSN 1260, 10am, scheduled to appear:

  • Bruce McCurdy from Cult of Hockey. We’ll talk roster makeup, Battle of the Blades and the playoffs.
  • Neal Livingston from Tend the Farm. We’ll talk Klefbom injury and the impressive cuts from Oiler camp.
  • Scott Cullen from tsn. We’ll run through the Canadian teams as the NHL season begins.
  • Craig Moonen from Krush Performance. We’ll talk mlb post-season.

is it telling if the facepuncher gets edmonton’s first goal of the season?

It was the fighting that got Godzdick that goal.

  18. SK Oiler Fan says:

and you guys want to get rid of enforcers

  19. BlacqueJacque says:

Who saw THAT coming? Man… Hockey. Everyone panning our fourth line and they open scoring for the season. If Gazdic sticks, he’ll be Woodguy’s new Jones :p

  20. striatic says:

    Petry’s Hand/Eye coordination was a little too good there : [

  21. Rebilled says:

  22. RexLibris says:

Did anyone warn Gazdic about what wearing #20 does to your offense?

  23. Jon K says:

That’s a nice feeling. Good for Gazdic.

  24. delooper says:

    The Hall PK is okay.

  25. Lowetide says:

Dubnyk looked deep in his net there.

  26. Lucinius says:

  27. fuzzy muppet says:

    Well that was short-lived

  28. RexLibris says:

    Heh, bring on the rollercoaster.

  29. doritogrande says:

Hrm. The Jets may have a 2-line C after all…

  30. Professor Q says:

Well that certainly calms things down a bit.

  31. striatic says:

ugly. poor Dubnyk. not a great way to start the season.

can we get higher glass or something?

  32. fuzzy muppet says:

The parade to the box begins…

  33. OilClog says:

    Well that was fun

  34. Professor Q says:

The 10th Doctor is not happy with that penalty.

  35. Kris11 says:

For a while I was thinking President’s Trophy, now I’m thinking lottery pick.

  36. Jon K says:

Alright, let’s make rush judgements about Dubnyk’s impending season based upon how this game goes. Go.

  37. Yukio says:

    Ales surprised everyone.

  38. RexLibris says:

Being the Jets, aren’t we historically obligated to have a 7-6 final?

  39. spoiler says:

Trouba almost scores on a deflection. Could be rookie night tonight.

  40. russ99 says:

    Good pressure on the PK.

  41. Lucinius says:

Loving Hemsky and Hall on the penalty kill.

  42. striatic says:

    .. and Perron, and Eberle.

  43. fuzzy muppet says:

They look awfully dis-organized on the PK.

  44. RexLibris says:

If they can stay at even strength for awhile, it’d be nice to see some actual possession zone exits sometime.

  45. SK Oiler Fan says:

Love the PK personnel. Back to the 80s

  46. doritogrande says:

Trouba almost scores on a deflection. Could be rookie night tonight.

Crap. I think the only one we have left is Belov, no?

  47. Henry says:

Will be interesting to see how many coaches put four forwards on a PP when Hall and Hemsky are on the PK.

  48. Lucinius says:

And I see those useless Russians are struggling in Washington tonight.

Heh. The mainstream media are going to have to choke down their bile with Ovie returning to form and Grabovski getting to play for a coach who doesn’t despise him.

  49. jake70 says:

    SK Oiler Fan:
Love the PK personnel. Back to the 80s

  50. Lowetide says:

that last hilite showed a tip off Belov, I think.

  51. spoiler says:

They’re determined to give Trouba minutes tonight.

  52. fuzzy muppet says:

    Yak is an absolute killer…

  53. RexLibris says:

That Yakupov kid looks like he has a chance to stick with the team this year.

  54. Lucinius says:

Man… Oilers looking good and bad.

  55. spoiler says:

    Petrell dreams of Joensuu’s shot.

  56. jp says:

The new Oilers are wonderful chaos.

Early returns on Joensuu are good!

  57. Yukio says:

    Joensuu looking good.

  58. russ99 says:

Jeez, Joensuu is huge. Plus he seems like he can play that net crashing role.

  59. pboy says:

    Nice shift by #6 there.

  60. SK Oiler Fan says:

Pavelec doesn’t look good. Lots of shots please

  61. Southern Oil says:

Sorry if someone has asked, but does anyone have a feed?

  62. Kitchener says:

Everyone is high energy now. Will be interesting to watch the top 9 in the 3rd period.

  63. Lowetide says:

Early minutes of the year, but the Oilers appear to be much cleaner in their own zone with the puck. Without possession there’s less running around and more support.

  64. VanOil says:

Tipped or not Dubbie lost his angle. I trust he will make up for it.

The 3d line is starting well.

5v5 looks good for the Oilers

  65. Yukio says:

Smyth looking awfully confused for a bit.

  66. godot10 says:

    Southern Oil:
Sorry if someone has asked, but does anyone have a feed?

CBC should have a feed. or something like that.

  67. Henry says:

Looks like the blender is going in the first dozen shifts.

  68. Southern Oil says:

godot10: CBC should have a feed. or something like that.

I’m in the States. Can’t get the CBC feed.

  69. fuzzy muppet says:

    Yo and Yak. Me like

  70. striatic says:

ok i think i like this Joensuu kid.

  71. Yukio says:

Joensuu might as well be god by this point.

  72. BlacqueJacque says:

Joensuu with some hands. Nice pass.

  73. spoiler says:

Beautiful quick Stuke play by Joensuu.

  74. Lowetide says:

Yakupov-Joensuu is a really nice combination tonight. Hall first player over 5 minutes.

  75. striatic says:

    Southern Oil,

    it is on Game Centre.

  76. jp says:

Joensuu is NOT Petrell or Hartikainen.

  77. VanOil says:

I would love to here a interview with Gordon in a couple weeks, “So that Yak kid?”

  78. Lucinius says:

Smytty looks a bit off with the puck.

Joenssu and Yakupov seem to have chemistry and make that third line dangerous.

  79. John Chambers says:

    Nice plan to double-shift Hall.

  80. pboy says:

Nice play by Ference to interfere without taking a penalty.

  81. spoiler says:

even the way Schultz takes a pass oozes with silk.

  82. delooper says:

Well it looks like the Oilers have finally found their Finn.

  83. fuzzy muppet says:

This is our worst fear. Dubnyk looks really shaky

  84. Yukio says:

That wouldn’t have happened if Joensuu was out there….

  85. Lucinius says:

Horrendous sequence of play there. HORRENDOUS.

  86. Lowetide says:

Man they have everything going well but Belov (I believe) pinched too soon. 2-1

  87. Southern Oil says:

    Southern Oil,

    it is on Game Centre.

  88. striatic says:

it seemed like an odd way for Schultz to play the shot on that goal.

  89. Suntory Hanzo says:

Is 6 what we always wanted Penner to look like?

  90. SK Oiler Fan says:

what the f was belov doing way up ice?

  91. Lowetide says:

Joensuu is the first star for the Oilers this period. Lordy.

  92. doritogrande says:

Joensuu is some form of Nordic God tonight.

  93. Lucinius says:

Hall had to get that deep. He was careless. Then both Oilers who were back played it wrong, especially N. Schultz. And then Dubnyk didn’t correct for movement..

  94. striatic says:

The Big Finn draws a penalty.

    i think i’m in love.

  95. fuzzy muppet says:

Yak and Yo are lookin’ real nice.

Hall started that terrible play with a 1 on 3 turnover.

  96. spoiler says:

Gary Lariviere is havin a helluva period.

  97. Southern Oil says:

Well fuck! NHL game center is only free for 5 minutes. Any other feed?

  98. John Chambers says:

Joensuu playing like this is equivalent to if we drafted Landeskog.

It hasn’t even been a full period, but….

  99. delooper says:

As has been mentioned, Yakupov and Joensuu’s styles of play are very complementary. Nice to see some instant chemistry.

  100. Suntory Hanzo says:

Love Smyth, but his hands have summoned their inner JFJ.

  101. Kitchener says:

Joensuu is mature enough to know his role: be physical and get the puck to his linemates. Harski hadn’t figured that out yet.

  102. Numenius says:

    Edit: I mean Gordon!!

  103. Yukio says:

    All praise Joensuu.

  104. Lowetide says:

Justin Schultz is a beautiful man.

  105. spoiler says:

That’s the wrister we know and love. Great deflection by Gordon. Thank Gord we got a PP goal back.

  106. striatic says:

    Southern Oil,

you should buy it, it is worth it.

    otherwise try

  107. russ99 says:

    There’s that crazy Schultzy wrister!

  108. Lowetide says:

    Gordon (Schultz, Hemsky)

  109. pboy says:

Justin Schultz is a robot. No emotion, just cool, calm and efficient.

    Nice tip!

  110. rich says:

Nice tip by Gordon. First as an Oiler.

  111. BlacqueJacque says:

    fuzzy muppet,

Technically it isn’t the worst play. I mean, he’s got three jets ahead of him. You’d think the rest of the team could cover the other two.

Great shot by Schultz. Typical Schultz shot, seems to have more velocity. Good screen by Gordon – and a tip?

  112. John Chambers says:

Gordon showed Horcoff’s hands from 2008

  113. striatic says:

spoiler: Thank gord we got a PP goal back.

    Thank Gordon.

  114. spoiler says:

Wowzers. The Commissioner is having a helluva period too.

  115. striatic says:

    oh Schultz!

  116. BlacqueJacque says:

Oh good gravy yak buying time and Schultz with a wicked cross-crease pass.

  117. Lucinius says:

    Almost…. ALMOST.

I think I love this third line.

  118. fuzzy muppet says:

Through 1 period the OIlers looks like they have the best 3rd line in hockey

  119. jp says:

I don’t know whether the Oilers will make the playoffs or not this year, but it’s going to be a fun ride.

  120. striatic says:

    Schultz again.

that damn wrister creates all kinds of chaos.

  121. Lucinius says:

    And almost, again!

Oilers could have had another three goals…

  122. Lowetide says:

    SOG 15Oilers 7Jets

    What’s does this mean?

  123. Suntory Hanzo says:

I can’t believe anyone ever debated selecting Yakupov.

Wore my 64 with Yakupov in Cyrillic on the back to school today. Only one of my students had a guess who he was.

  124. Reg Dunlop says:

Yak has some serious jump. Smyth not so much. He should have hung them up last year.

  125. Kert says:

    Southern Oil,

If you want the CBC feed, use Hola Unblocker, it’s an extension for chrome. Once you have it installed, it’s two clicks to change from Canada to the states. Proxy server without doing all the work.

Works well for switching between US and Canadian netflix, too.

  126. spoiler says:

Lowetide: SOG 15Oilers 7Jets What’s does this mean?

I don`t know, but I`m gonna ask Dallas Eakins` tie.

  127. jake70 says:

Yak is so quick and shifty, creates space.

  128. Lucinius says:

Um, Cherry… you’re not exactly selling fighting with this whole ‘look at me! I’m fine!’

  129. BlacqueJacque says:

    Party like it’s 1984?

  130. striatic says:

    SOG 15Oilers 7Jets

    What’s does this mean?

it means if the glass was higher, the Oilers would probably be winning right now.

  131. Bos8 says:

    Try First row

Ignore all the come ons and be patient in loading.

  132. Bulging Twine says:

Great move to go around defender and gain OZone,
Good draw play on the boards to gain possession,
Good traffic in front, good battle in front, good vision and deft hands with back pass to set up great scoring chance,
great reach in takeaway in ozone. and drew a penalty.

  133. Lowetide says:

    Michael Parkatti ‏@mparkatti 1m

    Oilers lead 1st period Corsi 18-10. Yakupov +10, Joensuu +9, Gordon +9, Petry +7.

  134. Bulging Twine says:

Ference is a better player than I thought.

  135. BlacqueJacque says:

    That’s a sick third line.

  136. Bulging Twine says:

I don’t remember seeing Hemsky backcheck as hard as he did in the first.
    Two great backcheck breakups.

  137. Lowetide says:

You’d like to be ahead because the period was solid for the Oilers, but if they play that way for three periods they should win the hockey game.

  138. Scotty LaDouche says:

PJ Stock does his side no favors.

  139. SK Oiler Fan says:

Besides Belov’s joy skate up ice MacTs pickups are looking great.
Hell of a period for JJ and Yak.
Too bad Nuge and Gags are out. Injuries IMO are one of the biggest factors for who makes and misses the playoffs.

  140. striatic says:

    PJ Stock’s logic:

having players suffer brain damage to reduce slashing is a good trade.

  141. VanOil says:

Gordon is going to enjoy himself even in February by not being in Phoenix

Perron already happy to be free of Hitchcockian Hockey

But Yakupov fully understanding and loving Eakins 100% effort get the puck now hockey, Music

  142. lance says:

In the US this seems fine:
(Also fine is America seems. We need the federal government for what now? Though I understand that 80% of federal employees were at work today, so, whatever. The biggest problem with a government shutdown? A: Impermanence. s/t: Stephan Moleneux)

Acton, Joensuu, Gordon and Belov all look like they can play the game. Save the 3 1 OV’s I wonder if MacT should have picked 17 more off the wire.

One of these teams may score a touchdown.

Structure sucks. Pond hockey is way more fun to watch.

Oh and when was the last time a 1 OV started his sophmore season on the third line?

That’s kinda ridiculous, if you think about it.

  148. Logan91 says:

    Are the commentators drunk tonight???

  149. BlacqueJacque says:

    Scotty LaDouche:
PJ Stock does his side no favors.

By saying that players overwhelmingly support fighting, and that fighters accept the risks?

  150. Rocknrolla says:

Jonesuu….wow. I can see him making an appearance net front on the pp.

gadzic looks like he may be able to stick. I’d like to see Gazin eager and acton next game.

Ference looks small, but calm. Love perons compete.

Duby shaky, but he’ll settle down.

  151. spoiler says:

Taylor Hall leading all skaters, including defensemen with 7:52 TOI. Byfuglien has him by 3 seconds for the Jets.

Big D gonna ride the stallion into the night.

  152. Lucinius says:

On fighting and Stock’s argument; one of his points that was ignored, was that these guys KNOW the risks, often better than anyone watching the game, and they not only accept it, but embrace it. I’m sorry, but we can’t always just wrap humanity in bubble wrap and try to remove anything and everything that can result in injury or death.

Yes, people are getting hurt. Yes, the impact on people later in life is tragic and unfortunate. But if the people who are at risk are fine with that risk, why should we step in? What right do we have? Hell, even on a league minimum salary these guys make more money in a year that the vast majority of Canadians will make in a decade — many of whom would gladly take the risk involved for that kind of money and the associated elements.

Now, I’m not saying we shouldn’t try to make things safer. I’m all for that; I’m a huge proponent of revamping hockey equipment to make it not only safer for the people who wear it, but for everyone who gets hit by that person.

  160. Lucinius says:

No, he wouldn’t have. Until Gagner went down there was no second line opening and that was more important to him than money.

4th line given a reward. They dig it out of their own zone but Acton ices it in error. But has the FO skills to bail himself out.

  187. SK Oiler Fan says:

This Swarm system sure let’s up a lot of point shots and odd man rushes.

  188. spoiler says:

Belov went for the body twice in his defensive play there, when a stick might have been easier.

  189. Lucinius says:

    Nicely done, Smid.

Not overly thrilled by the Eberle line tonight.

  190. Scotty LaDouche says:

    Dubnokoff….kinda like that.

  193. russ99 says:

In it just me or is the game flow a bit better with the new icing rule? Seems to be much faster restarts.

  194. Lucinius says:

Hall’s been a bit iffy on his positioning defensively, as expected.

  195. striatic says:

that’s that most Dubynk-esque series of saves i’ve seen Dubnyk make all year.

  196. pboy says:

Smyth seems a beat behind the play, pretty much every time.

Perron just might be that feisty prick who can play the Oilers have been looking for.

  197. russ99 says:

    Dubnykov! That’s fantastic.

  198. Kitchener says:

    Interesting body language:

Kane vs. Smid: Smid turns away first (Kane wins)
Kane vs. Ference: Kane turns away first (Ference wins)

  199. fuzzy muppet says:

    Belov isn’t exactly a world-beater defensively

  200. Lowetide says:

Dubnyk with a nice sequence of saves but he could have avoided the high wire act by making the early, easy save and controlling. He is not good tonight.
