JETS AT OILERS, G1 13-14

It’s going to take 90-94 points, 37-40 wins, a lot of luck, hard work, blood, sweat and tears. And it all starts tonight, on a sweet October 1st with a fall chill, the promise of a new tomorrow, and a half dozen piss-cutters-in-waiting. The Edmonton Oilers are back in town. Azorcan3

PROJECTED LINEUP

  • L1: Hall-Smyth-Hemsky (maligned line has stood the test of pre-season)
  • L2: Arcobello-Perron-Eberle (Arcobello is a better bet than Colborne, but there’s a risk)
  • L3: Gordon-Joensuu-Yakupov (any offense from this line at evens is golden)
  • L4: Acton-Eager-Brown (if you boo Acton there’s no hope for you. Ever)
  • D1: Smid-Petry (A bounceback year is likely)
  • D2: Ference-J Schultz (greatness awaits)
  • D3: N Schultz-Belov (he comes from the land of the ice and snow)
  • G1: Dubnyk (based on pre-season rip jobs, I expect him to skate out with a blindfold) st1

I have the Oilers making the playoffs, and for me the reasons all run through Dallas Eakins. He’s a smart cookie, and based on what he’s said and done, Oiler fans can look forward to:

  1. The 1line running hot and heavy
  2. The 2line running hot and heavy
  3. The 3line running hot and heavy
  4. Stars playing on the PK
  5. Impact forwards >20 minutes
  6. seeing the goalie pulled sometime after the 10 minute mark of the third period when behind
  7. Puck retrieval at a premium
  8. Minute usage of the 4line
  9. Frank post-game answers to the camera
  10. Impatience
  11. Aggression
  12. Mobility
  13. Callups and send downs
  14. Fewer fights than you think
  15. Running the gifted ones ragged (why Ralph limited their time is beyond me)
  16. The second season

IT’S A DOG COLLAH, IT’S OFFENSIVE!!

st2

Craig MacTavish did a lot of work on the blue this summer, replaced Horcoff with Gordon (which was a big deal, capwise) and then dealt Paajarvi to hurry the future with Perron. The new hires tonight are:

  • David Perron, who lit up the pre-season with goals times goals times goals.
  • Mark Arcobello, who subs in for 89 and has the best chance he’ll ever get to shine.
  • Boyd Gordon, asked to bring calmness to chaos
  • Jesse Joensuu, the latest hope for size and skill
  • Will Acton, who is expected to do a little of everything
  • Andrew Ference, the new captain and face of the team: tough as nails, better he never saw “You’ve Got Mail”
  • Anton Belov, who might just be manna from heaven

st3

I’m picking this team to make the playoffs because there’s too much good to be held back by the fiddle faddle any longer. Yes, it’s Taylor Hall but it’s also Nail Yakupov and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle and Justin Schultz and Sam Gagner and David Perron and Ales Hemsky and that’s 8 of them. I know there’s going to be bad nights, nights on the road when they can’t find the stage and sound out of time when they finally do, but there’s just too much. TOO much.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

st4

TSN 1260, 10am, scheduled to appear:

  • Bruce McCurdy from Cult of Hockey. We’ll talk roster makeup, Battle of the Blades and the playoffs.
  • Neal Livingston from Tend the Farm. We’ll talk Klefbom injury and the impressive cuts from Oiler camp.
  • Scott Cullen from tsn. We’ll run through the Canadian teams as the NHL season begins.
  • Craig Moonen from Krush Performance. We’ll talk mlb post-season.

    russ99,

I saw someone, somewhere mention that icings saw a puck drop, on average, 9 seconds faster in the preseason. No idea if its true, but it feels like it.

    Lowetide,

Hope it’s first game jitters. We need a lot better from him this year.

I just started watching in the second period. This is the best game ever!!

    Joensuu!! Love it!

  14. doritogrande says:

They might as well make a statue of Joensuu tonight.

This Finn is manna from heaven.

  19. BlacqueJacque says:

Giggity. Joensuu is everything Harski should have been. Fast, big, strong, skilled. Belov a bit lost with positioning on that pp.

  20. OilBuzz says:

    Beautiful

  21. wheatnoil says:

Nice hands by Arcobello at the side of the net too. Batting the puck down with his hand and then getting another rebound shot with the puck still in the air.

  22. namflashback says:

The PPTOI is going to look funny.

  23. Lowetide says:

    Joensuu (Eberle, Arcobello)

  24. lance says:

doritogrande: Why are we calling it the 3rd line? Because it has a 3-line type C on it?

Because our “2-line” has an AHLer centering it.

We’ll have to see the ice time totals. I’m guessing that Ebs and Hemmer get more TOI at least.

I don’t really buy into the whole idea of 3rd line = checking, if that’s what you imply.

Ebs and Joensuu playing a bit of ping pong there. Incredible.

  25. spoiler says:

Belov saved a Gazdic infection, I mean giveaway, as the 4th successfully wastes some time.

  28. fuzzy muppet says:

Smyth is simply too slow to play anymore. He’s done

  29. OilClog says:

Oh man… I’ll miss ya Smyth!

  30. Lucinius says:

Smyytty looks like he burned all his play during the preseason. Just looking bad all night.

  31. delooper says:

Smyth does look out of his depth in this game. He’s not keeping up with the plays.

  32. rich says:

Taylor Hall is really strong to stand up to that hit from Kane.

  33. striatic says:

Smyth tried to mask that hold pretty well, but didn’t get away with it : [

  39. Lucinius says:

I will say this for Acton.. he’s very good on faceoffs!

  40. striatic says:

yikes. Smyth struggling to make that line change even after 2 minutes of rest.

he might have one rush in him per shift, tops.

  41. Kitchener says:

    fuzzy muppet,

Agreed, but an interesting positive is that he doesn’t back down physically.

  42. Lucinius says:

Eakins really needs to start double shifting Joensuu onto the top line for the third period. Give Smytty more rest between shifts.

  43. pboy says:

It’s only Game 1 but the Oilers are so much more aggressive in all zones than they were last season.

  44. striatic says:

damn i was really hoping we’d get a good month out of Smyth this year. that’s all i was really hoping for but it seems like that month may have been pre-season : [

  46. RexLibris says:

  48. rich says:

    striatic,

Was going to say the same thing.

  49. pboy says:

Fuck this, I demand TSN loan Cuthbert and Ferraro to CBC for all Oiler games.

  50. striatic says:

Smid is going to get suspended for that.

  51. Lowetide says:

Smid’s lucky to get only 2 there. Lordy.

  52. RexLibris says:

Love Smid’s defense to the ref: “come on! in motherland that is how we say your shoelace is untied!”

  53. tcho says:

Man crush on Joensuu. He’s looking like a great find.

  54. BlacqueJacque says:

Smid had been meeeaaaannn to Scheifele all game.

  55. striatic says:

    tcho:
Man crush on Joensuu. He’s looking like a great find.

Joensuu demonstrates the strength of knowing your limitations.

which isn’t to say he doesn’t have skill. he does. but the trick is that he never pushes himself past the limits of his skill. exactly to the line, no more.

if he didn’t have that awareness, he’d be a lot worse.

  56. SK Oiler Fan says:

please take belov off the pk

  57. VanOil says:

    SK Oiler Fan:
please take belov off the pk

I disagree, he is the big nasty fill in when Smid is in the Box. Ferrence has the will but not the size to clear the front of the net.

  58. Bulging Twine says:

    Brutal penalty by Smyth

  59. Lucinius says:

Belov looks like a player with the jitters, honestly.

it was mean, and dirty, but I’m fine with Smid’s hit. Scheiffle knew he was there and then bent forward knowing the hit was coming. Stupidity deserves punishment. That and its nice to see it being an Oiler dishing it out instead of receiving it.

  60. wheatnoil says:

I’m glad I read McCartney’s piece on Oilers Nation about the swarm defense system before this game. I can see it in action with that background a little better than I would otherwise. It seems like either the Oilers will get the puck back quick or they’ll give up numbers against. It’s going to be high event hockey in Edmonton this year. I actually kinda love it!

  61. Lowetide says:

13:26 for Hall, he’s 50% in the dot with an assist and Lindy Ruff is stewing up a mess of crow.

  62. RexLibris says:

Sabres name Vanek and Ott as team captains.

Aren’t both expiring UFAs on a team that appears headed towards a rebuild?

  63. RexLibris says:

    Lowetide:
13:26 for Hall, he’s 50% in the dot with an assist and Lindy Ruff is stewing up a mess of crow.

Yeah, but he had a bad giveaway somewhere in the first, so Ruff would still shorten the bench.

  64. Lowetide says:

4-3. This is not going to be an easy third.

  65. Lucinius says:

No fault on Dubnyk for that one. If you’re going to screen your own goalie on a shot you damn well better block it.

  66. SK Oiler Fan says:

    VanOil,

He’s a wanderer / out of position often

  67. spoiler says:

Smyth lucky to not get called for interference there.

  68. spoiler says:

    Loving me some Gazdic!

    What???

  69. Numenius says:

Gazdic going for the Gordie Howe hatrick.

  70. VanOil says:

Don’t hurt those sweet hands #20

  71. Lowetide says:

    Gazdic wins the fight. Yeah?

  72. doritogrande says:

Well, that’s one way to pop off his helmet. Gazdig looks promising.

  73. Lucinius says:

    Liking Gazdic.

  74. Brackenburied says:

    Gadzook gadzic!!!!

  75. wheatnoil says:

That’s great timing for a fight. Jets had numbers going the other way. Nice work Gazdic.

  76. fuzzy muppet says:

    SMyth has been absolutely BRUTAL.

Lets see how much accountability really matters. I’d rather Brown play, at least he can skate

  77. wheatnoil says:

Did Gazdic set the place on fire??

  78. fuzzy muppet says:

    It really is firewagon hockey!

  79. Lucinius says:

    Fire alarm? haha.

  80. Suntory Hanzo says:

    That’s 94′s alarm.

    He’s done.

  81. Scotty LaDouche says:

    GADZICS ON FIRE!

  82. VanOil says:

    SK Oiler Fan:
    VanOil,
He’s a wanderer / out of position often

Agreed. hopefully this improves he has the tools and temperament to be a big find.

  83. tcho says:

The fire alarm sound is fun, but would be more appropriate during an Oilers PK…

  84. OilBuzz says:

    That alarm is getting obnoxious

  85. steveb12344 says:

Anyone else notice that Yak wasn’t on for a while?

  86. Brackenburied says:

    Brackenburied:
    Gadzook gadzic!!!!

    Edit: Gazdook Gazdic

  87. Suntory Hanzo says:

    Lowetide,

But to be fair, if he gets selected for Canada, he will be be matched up with Zamuner. Just like this game. It’s fine to be able to push a river, but when you have to push Hell’s Gate, it’s a bit much.

Get well soon Nuge and Gags!

  88. Lowetide says:

Yakupov didn’t play much that period. Hurt?

  89. steveb12344 says:

    Benched? Better not be hurt.

  90. wheatnoil says:

    steveb12344:
Anyone else notice that Yak wasn’t on for a while?

TSN has him at 7:07 through 2 periods. That’s the least on the team. Wonder what that’s about.

  91. Lucinius says:

    steveb12344,

His ice time seems on par given the penalty killing the Oilers had to do in the game. It’d normally be inflated more with powerplay time, but Oilers have scored quick off both powerplays.

  92. Numenius says:

Eager’s watching his place on the lineup go up in smoke.

  93. VanOil says:

    steveb12344,

Yes, I checked his ice time it was the same as #6 but I don’t recall seeing him for a while

  94. wheatnoil says:

Mind you Joensuu didn’t get much ice time either. I wonder if things got thrown off with Gordon on the PK.

  95. Lowetide says:

    Michael Parkatti ‏@mparkatti 22s

    WPG took 2nd 23-12, now lead 33-31 overall. Gordon +6, Yak/Joensuu +5. Hall/Hemsky -6, Ference -5.

  96. striatic says:

    Lucinius:
    steveb12344,

i tend to agree. he’s looked great when he has been on though.

didn’t see any play where he might have been injured.

  97. SK Oiler Fan says:

    Suntory Hanzo,

ha ha. I thought that was confirmed last year.

  98. steveb12344 says:

He wasn’t on the last few shifts with his regular line

  99. John Chambers says:

Toss Yak on the left side with Hall and Hemsky pleeeeaaaaaase!

  100. Lucinius says:

His shift number is only two less than Perron, even; his have just been shorter. Joensuu is ahead of him because he got double shifted twice. It just seems like the second line has eaten up more time per shift than they were supposed to.

  101. delooper says:

    Numenius:
Eager’s watching his playing time go up in smoke.

Dunno. Eager might be better than Smyth if this is all Ryan has to offer. I hope for Smyth’s sake he’s suffering from a cold or something.

  102. Lucinius says:

Really, CBC? I don’t care what Crosby listens to. Not even a little.

  103. striatic says:

    Lucinius:
His shift number is only two less than Perron, even; his have just been shorter. Joensuu is ahead of him because he got double shifted twice. It just seems like the second line has eaten up more time per shift than they were supposed to.

Smyth should probably be playing with Yakupov and Gordon, Joensuu with Hall and Hemsky.

  104. Lucinius says:

    striatic,

I’d actually leave Smyth with Hall and Hemsky, but cut his shifts. For every two shifts he plays, double shift Perron and Joensuu for one each. Cuts his ice time by half-ish and might let him keep up more when he is on the ice while letting Perron and Joensuu see more ice.

  105. stevezie says:

I know we talk a lot on this blog about drinks and drinking, but I am right now legitimately drunk. It is great. Everyone should do this. Everyone looks great. Belov looks real. Perron looks real. Very optimistik. Hemsky looks rejuvenated. I am only registering positive things.
    Even Gasdick looks passable.

  106. sliderule says:

    Smyth is done.
If he tries to take another of his famous two minute shifts he will have a heart attack

  107. striatic says:

    Lucinius,

fine, whatever it takes to cut his minutes back severely.

i’m ok with Smyth’s play when he’s not winded, but dammit he’s terrible when overplayed.

  108. DBO says:

watched first 2 on fast forward. No Yak much in 2nd. Smyth is gassed some fierce, so ouch. Our 3rd line is crushing 3rd pairing d, and that is going to be how we win. 3 scoring lines!!!! Or 4, based on the grinder line. I’m fine with how they have been sent out.

1 st game. Can’t read into it too much. But for sure Smyth needs to sit and double shift Yak a few times. I actually think Hall misses Nuge or Gags. Man this will so fun when both those guys are back. Although in the meantime, I like how much Hall is double shifting.

And biggest observation: having sill on the PK is fun, cause you see the D backing up right away when it’s Hall and Hemsky out there.

  109. SK Oiler Fan says:

Some warts showing that period. DD going to have to shut the door.

  110. Rocknrolla says:

    stevezie:
I know we talk a lot on this blog about drinks and drinking, but I am right now legitimately drunk. It is great. Everyone should do this. Everyone looks great. Belov looks real. Perron looks real. Very optimistik. Hemsky looks rejuvenated. I am only registering positive things.
    Even Gasdick looks passable.

Enjoy it Stevezie! You deserve it!

  111. Lucinius says:

    DBO,

Hall and Hemsky have to be terrifying when they’re out there on a pk and they get the puck. So much speed it can be easy to catch the other team moving the wrong direction. Something the Oilers have been missing for years that bothered me.

Especially since Hemsky showed he could pk just fine back when MacT was coaching.

  112. Andropod says:

Someone wondered earlier if there would be space for Gags. Maybe he should move to 2 LW, move Perron up to Hall’s LW? Let Smyth be the 13th forward?

  113. SK Oiler Fan says:

Well said Moose! Can he take 6 ring’s position?

  114. crude says:

When Nuge comes back you gotta slide Hall over to wing, Perron on the second and Smyth, well… I dunno. 94 certainly not makin it easy for his linemates, and every other line seems to be ok, this game at least.

  115. striatic says:

    Andropod:
Someone wondered earlier if there would be space for Gags. Maybe he should move to 2 LW, move Perron up to Hall’s LW? Let Smyth be the 13th forward?

Hall should be at LW when RNH and Gagner are back, no question.

He’s been decent at C in pre-season but even if he’s a little better at C than LW you can get enough ice-time for RNH and Gagner unless you move him back to wing or play Gagner out of position.

  116. Ribs says:

I forgot how awesome J.Schultz can be with the puck. Looks like the back is feeling better.

Ference looks okay. He sure has a weird looking shot/dump in.

Belov kind of looks like a mix of Corey Potter and Marc Fistric. First game jitters, I hope.

Hemsky reminding me why he’s my favourite. Beautiful goal.

Some crazy line mixing going on. Getting Hall max minutes but paid the price on that second goal as he was tired and coughed up the puck.

Yakupov looking absolutely lost out there. Seems to be playing his own system. It’s not working very well.

Dubnyk needs to find his net. Quickly.

Gadzik, Joensuu, Acton, all looking decent. Arcobello not so much.

  117. DBO says:

Thank you Dallas. Yak on top line for a shift. love it

  118. Lowetide says:

    stevezie:
I know we talk a lot on this blog about drinks and drinking, but I am right now legitimately drunk. It is great. Everyone should do this. Everyone looks great. Belov looks real. Perron looks real. Very optimistik. Hemsky looks rejuvenated. I am only registering positive things.
    Even Gasdick looks passable.

Haha. You’re at home or safe getting home, right? Not being a Dad, just want to make sure you’re okay.

  119. VanOil says:

Notice who was playing wing with Hall!

  120. striatic says:

Gagner has been played out of position in the past, RW by Renney, and he didn’t take to it in the month he was at it. back to C and he was much better.

  121. B.C.B says:

I hate to say this but Hall has been very under whelming by my eye. Please, MacT, more centres . . . thanks in advance.

  122. fuzzy muppet says:

    94 is on the PP..

  123. Rebilled says:

    JOENSUU FOR PRESIDENT!

  124. Lucinius says:

Joensuu is a wonder if he can keep playing like this.

  125. doritogrande says:

I wonder how much it would cost to bring Tikkanen in for a couple of weeks to teach Joensuu to be a dick? That’d be worth 10 times what we pay.

  126. Lowetide says:

Jesse Joensuu has had a helluva game, he really has.

  127. OilBuzz says:

Did you guys see smytty trying to get back up on the PP? Looked like a walrus

  128. striatic says:

did that look like an attempted elbow by Buff, or are my homer eyes deceiving me?

  129. RexLibris says:

Normally one says that a 4 on 4 creates more ice. With Byfuglien in the box though, I think that becomes even more pronounced.

  130. crude says:

Joensuu, man. Good game so far.

  131. Numenius says:

Joensuu fights the whole Jets team by himself.

  132. fuzzy muppet says:

Normally I’d say a trade off of Joenssu for Buff is smart…not so sure after tonite’s game

  133. wheatnoil says:

Thank God Joensuu’s back on the ice!

  134. VanOil says:

Petry saved a goal, great play on the Joker

  135. pboy says:

    doritogrande,

Maybe Tik could teach him his special brand of Tikanese?

  136. Suntory Hanzo says:

  137. striatic says:

    pboy:
    doritogrande,

Maybe Tik could teach him his special brand of Tikanese?

i think Joensuu’s established baseline english is too good to get away with that : /

  138. Lucinius says:

One of the best things from the game; the shots generated. Need to cut down on some of the shots against.. but its nice to see the Oilers actually get above the 30 shot mark with time to spare.

  139. SK Oiler Fan says:

Smyth didn’t even last 1 game on the 1 line.

  140. Lowetide says:

They took the goal away from Gazdic and gave it to Brown.

  141. wheatnoil says:

    Lowetide:
They took the goal away from Gazdic and gave it to Brown.

Probably because he’s an enforcer. Bigots!

  142. pboy says:

    Lowetide,

Don’t worry, Sherlock Hrudey just deciphered who the true goal scorer was.

  143. spoiler says:

    More than Jones… Joensuu.

  144. Henry says:

That was the first pass in Hemmer’s skates he could pop straight north.

  145. SK Oiler Fan says:

no call? late fin elbow to the head?

  146. Suntory Hanzo says:

    6-4-64 looks like quality.

or 4-6-64 if you go LT stylings..

  147. Lucinius says:

Shitty reffing. As always. Can’t make ‘em pay on the powerplay if you don’t get ‘em.

  148. fuzzy muppet says:

Brutal! It went off the defencemans stick!

  153. wheatnoil says:

    Son of a bitch!

  154. doritogrande says:

    Fuuuuuuckkk.

  155. fuzzy muppet says:

    Dubynk is not very good

  156. Lowetide says:

Hall with a dangerous pass and then Dubnyk with a wiff. Lordy. 4-4.

  157. Andropod says:

    AAARGH

  158. spoiler says:

That was a knuckler. Dropped faster than a Dickey.

  159. OilBuzz says:

    OMG that goal was BRUTAL

  160. Lucinius says:

Bad pass by Hall; second time this game he is directly responsible for the turn over leading to a goal against.

    Knuckler beat Dubnyk.

  161. SK Oiler Fan says:

I don’t care if the puck dropped 5 ft. that has to be stopped. not NHL goaltending tonight

  162. crude says:

Don’t worry Jesse has a plan.

  163. Suntory Hanzo says:

Can’t anyone else play C, so we can unleash the fury that is Hall on LW?

  164. RexLibris says:

Yeah, because we wouldn’t want the stick hurt by a vicious slash.

  165. Suntory Hanzo says:

    Yak time methinks…

  166. pboy says:

Arcobello hasn’t done much of anything by my eye.

  167. fuzzy muppet says:

    Suntory Hanzo,

    Mikhal Grabovski…

  168. Andropod says:

    Suntory Hanzo,

    put Hall with Arco?

  169. RMGS says:

It’s the first game, so I didn’t want to comment, but Dubnyk is the only reason this game is tied (and not in a good way).

  170. Lucinius says:

Dubnyk and Hall share equal blame in that one. Hall should be ashamed, though. Every year he does these stupid passes. How can he not know better by now?

  171. russ99 says:

Maybe MacT is on to something about that goaltending.

But it is one game, hope Dubnyk bounces back.

  172. John Chambers says:

Trouba is winning the Calder. Book it.

  173. fuzzy muppet says:

    SIt Hall.. enough terrible turnovers

  174. Andropod says:

Maybe Lindsay Ruff is onto something?

  175. Suntory Hanzo says:

There is a clear reason why Arco is not at the same level as the other NHLers.

  176. doritogrande says:

Jacob Trouba AKA Scott Stevens. Lordy.

  177. Lucinius says:

Hall. Again. LOOK AT WHERE YOU’RE PUTTING IT. God damn.

  178. RexLibris says:

Trouba vs Hall, Byfuglien vs Eberle

I think we’ve got ourselves a storyline for these two teams. Didn’t take long.

  179. John Chambers says:

    Lucinius,

Hall is definitely trying to do too much

  180. pboy says:

Trouba is doing his best Doughty impression tonight.

  181. Lowetide says:

Tough night for Hall and Dubnyk imo, they need to be much better. However, there’s still 2 points in the balance, and those two will play a major role in the last 5 minutes.

  182. SK Oiler Fan says:

He’s deep in his net and letting goals go through his body and arm. Not a good sign

  183. Numenius says:

    pboy:
Arcobello hasn’t done much of anything by my eye.

Huh? He’s been solid, nice passes, some scoring chances.

  184. Lucinius says:

    John Chambers,

He needs to be sat for a shift and talked to by a coach. He and Dubnyk could cost us the game.

  185. crude says:

    John Chambers:
    Lucinius,

Hall is definitely trying to do too much

Trying to do too much or being asked to do too much? Play centre? ok. Carry Smyth and play centre?

  186. VanOil says:

Hall and Dubbie both owe the team a win after trying hard to piss away this one.

The good news is they are both capable of delivering wins almost single handedly.

  187. Kitchener says:

Hall will improve. It’s his first game at C in the big leagues.

    Ah shit…

  188. doritogrande says:

Fuck. I do NOT want to be facing my coworkers tomorrow if this goes pear shaped.

  189. Wolfie says:

    Dubnyk not inspiring much confidence.

  190. fuzzy muppet says:

hello lottery. Thanks for the centers

  191. RexLibris says:

Yep. Feels like those old barnstorming games from the 90s.

  192. Ice Sage says:

    Welcome Mr Eakins!

  193. crude says:

    Frolik is a killer.

  194. Lucinius says:

    Ugh.

    This team.

  195. Suntory Hanzo says:

    That’s brutal coverage.

    Fix this Eakins!

  196. rich says:

I hate it when Hrudey is right, but he is. All the guys are following the puck and nobody is playing the man in front. Brutal goal.

  197. wheatnoil says:

    Yakupov replaces Smyth.

  198. striatic says:

so, maybe Hall isn’t a Centre after all?

  199. russ99 says:

Now we’ll see if these guys are any better than last year with the goal deficit late.
