LEAFS AT OILERS G14, 13-14

The Edmonton Oilers got a lift from Richard Bachman Sunday night, and there’s word now that the troops will be returning over the next 7 days. Sam Gagner, Taylor Hall, Ryan Smyth, Jesse Joensuu–that’s a better trade than any you can make on the open market, and it’ll give the Oilers a better chance to catch up after their dreadful 3-8-2 start.

POSSIBLE LINEUP

  • Nuge-Perron-Eberle
  • Gordon-Arcobello-Hemsky
  • Gagner-Jones-Yakupov
  • Acton-Gazdic-Lander
  • Smid-Petry
  • Belov-J Schultz
  • Ference-Grebeshkov
  • Bachman

I like Perron on the top line, that trio has to score and Perron should give them a lift.  The 2line features a couple of veterans along with Arcobello who has been moving the play in the right direction this year. I have Gagner-Yakupov together because for me that’s the ideal C for the young Russian, and Jones is the best available winger for them.

I’m absolutely certain you’ll want to throw your line preference in the comments, please feel free. This might be the most fun we have all day!

Defense brings Grebs back in and we assume Dubnyk is still nursing an injury, so it’s Bachman. It’ll be interesting to see what happens on Saturday should Bachman post a quality start tonight–he might get this job without a stumble, although I’d bring Dubnyk back in when he’s ready to go.

binkley2

That’s Les Binkley in goal (a great story), with Peter Stemkowski the Leaf C and he’s being checked by Al MacNeil of the Penguins (this would be 67-68). If you click on the photo you can get a good look at the Leaf uniform (this is a beauty, vintage SC 1967) and the players and fans in back.

I don’t have much to say about tonight, beyond:

  1. It’s a home game for the Leafs
  2. They usually win games while getting outshot
  3. They will probably win and outshoot the Oilers tonight

The Oilers? The Oilers are a team in the National Hockey League. Beyond that, I’ll wait to see what happens tonight and in the 6 or 7 games beyond it. I think we owe this group that much time, but after that we’ll have to figure out what the hell we’re going to discuss all winter.

ullman2Norm Ullman played for both of tonight’s teams, he was a  terrific player (among the best Edmonton born players in my lifetime, along with Johnny Bucyk, Mark Messier, Scott Niedermayer, Jarome Iginla, Phil Russell and others). That’s not really fair, Ullman is from Provost which also produced Curtis Glencross in the modern era. I saw Normie Ullman as a WHA Oiler, it was a great thing. Bruce McCurdy has been talking recently about those WHA days, if the season goes sideways early maybe I’ll scout around and see what I can bring you. Would that hold interest? Too boring? Let me know.

hall hit gif

How much does this team miss Taylor Hall? A lot.  The fleet winger I like to call “Chance” (because he causes so many) really opens up the  ice and rattles the other guy with speed and a willingness to drive to the net. Tom Benjamin has a brilliant piece up in which he says of Hall “I think he is probably the best player in the West” and is a brilliant look at the Leafs and advanced stats. Much of what Benjamin is talking about speaks to our recent conversations here on this blog.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

10 this morning, TSN 1260. Scheduled to appear:

  • Bruce McCurdy from Cult of Hockey. We’ll talk about wonky goaltending, Hall, the price to pay on the trade market.
  • Steve Dangle from Leafs Nation. We’ll preview the Leafs home game tonight at Rexall.
  • James Mirtle from the Globe and Mail. Mirtle has become the best source available for Leafs coverage, with both ‘real news’ stories and bona fide analysis using advanced stats. We’ll talk about this team’s success, and why the analytics world keeps waiting for a market correction.
  • Lisa McRitchie, Kukla’s Korner. Lisa has a terrific article on Mitch Moroz up and we’ll talk about it along with a few other WHL stories.

10-1260 via text and @Lowetide_ on twitter. This will be a fun morning!

Good thing Bucky’s there behind the bench tonight. So everyone knows the team is getting the best coaching possible, ha ha ha ha ha.

If Nick Shultz plays against the Oil, you know he buries that.

    Shots 14-12 EDM after 1. 1-0 Toronto.Seems right.

  12. VanOil says:

Minus one dog whistle it was a fun period to watch

  13. Derek says:

The fact that the TML are 3rd in the ECF is absolutely mind blowing. I don’t know how anyone could watch them and not see the obvious flaws.

  14. OilClog says:

Kessel looks very uncomfortable after that train ride to Belov town.

  15. D says:

    Another good period by BTO.

  16. Old School G says:

Bachman could you be? I sit here prematurely wondering. I hope so.

  17. Lowetide says:

I liked the Oilers in that period, the dog whistle play cost them a goal but that’s good, a coaching opportunity. You know what else is a coaching opportunity? Oklafuckinghoma City.

  18. justDOit says:

Could have sworn that I heard ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ there at the end of the first. But I’m enjoying the feistiality on display here.

I think I heard Bruce M today on your show mention converting on offense……what is this team’s shooting percentage this year?

  21. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Both these teams have so many holes it’s like watching two pieces of swizz cheese argue over the last piece of focaccia bread.

  22. SK Oiler Fan says:

After seeing the Kessel goal again, why the hell didn’t J Shultz play that like a regular 2 on 1? Belov started the shit show, but JS made a poor decision to go way over to the boards and leave Kessel all by himself. Obviously a forward should have been back as well, but this is the Oilers – 1 mistake is followed by 3 others.

  23. justDOit says:

The commercials keep telling me to ‘See Alice’. I don’t even know an Alice.

Could they mean Cooper? I’ve already seen him once, and it was a good show, but I don’t think I need to see him again.

I think that’s a stretch. Schultz has no idea where his winger is (Yakupov) and to expect him to know that is absolutely unfair.

These SNO douches are getting way too much fun out of Eller’s “junior” line.

THey need to lose tonight. Smug punks. They need to lose.

  28. Dead Cat Bounce says:

The Leafs, with their top 2 lines. score off the rush.

With the skill they have, that’s why they win more than they lose against teams that need to cycle.

Watch out for Kessel, Kadri, JVR and Lupul in the next two periods.

When they slide down the poop pipe it’s going to make all of this so much better.

  30. crude says:

Only managed to tune in after the leafs goal, but I dare say there was a lot to like from the Oil that period. Liked Yakupov going in ramming speed on Reimer. Also, Belov’s hit at the blue line… O-zone pressure, too…
Maybe a little high-event, but I’m havin’ fun.

  31. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Is anyone else a little creeped out by this weird “bro” video game commercial using “Perfect Day” a couple of days after Reed’s death?

  32. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Lowetide: When they slide down the poop pipe it’s going to make all of this so much better.

This is why God created the Bruins, right?

  33. Lucinius says:

Oilers need to actually convert on their many chances to score. Every game it seems they struggle to finish. More and more this season is looking like a lost cause and its frustrating because they’ve deserved to win a fair number of the games they’ve lost. Between injuries, goaltending, lack of finish, horrendous special teams and defensive lapses (officiating doesn’t count as an excuse because the refs always suck — NHL refs are the worst in pro sports; hell, even the refs in wrestling are technically doing their jobs better and more consistently!) this team hasn’t been where it should.

Part of it is on the coaches. A lot of it is on the players (the utter lack of effort in the early part of the season was extremely disappointing). Hopefully they get things together.

  34. SK Oiler Fan says:

    Lowetide,

I’d say if the Dman is doing his job properly he takes a quick look to see what support he has coming back once he sees Belov chasing a bone. Poor awareness of what’s happening in front of him IMO.
Obviously Belov shouldn’t have went sniffing around as all 3 forwards were at the hashes or lower.

  35. justDOit says:

    Romulus Apotheosis:
Is anyone else a little creeped out by this weird “bro” video game commercial using “Perfect Day” a couple of days after Reed’s death?

Just so long as they don’t use a Jonas Bros song. Not for a while, at least.

    Romulus Apotheosis:

Haven’t seen that one, but milk is now a sports drink. You drink it a day in advance though.

  37. Lowetide says:

  38. Derek says:

    Disgusting line change

  39. Brackenburied says:

    Gags stopped skating!!

  40. Lowetide says:

2-0, on another two on one. Sooner or later, they’re going to learn. And you can’t blame Schultz on that, helluva play and a great chance on goal.

  41. Lucinius says:

    Sigh. Belov…

On a 2 on 1 you ALWAYS take the pass away and leave the shooter to the goalie.

  42. rich says:

Time for Blacquejacque to threaten to burn his Oilers gear.

Much as I like Belov, he needed to play the pass, not the puck carrier on the 2:1 – goalie takes the shooter.

  43. Lowetide says:

    Dead Cat Bounce:

    That’s true already. 2-0 Leafs.

  44. Dead Cat Bounce says:

Did I mention the Leafs score off the rush?

JVR from Kessel on the rush.

Who could have seen that coming?

  45. flyfish1168 says:

If we want to play run and gun like the old 80′s oilers we need to convert at a better rate

  49. hunter1909 says:

The team that scores the next goal wins the game.

  50. SK Oiler Fan says:

    Lucinius,

These Oilers don’t follow the basic rules of defence. You know the ones you learn on pee wee?

  51. hodgie99 says:

    Lucinius:
    Sigh. Belov…

On a 2 on 1 you ALWAYS take the pass away and leave the shooter to the goalie.

Incorrect – if the shooter comes in on his off-wing, the dman must take the shot away.

If a LH shooter comes down the left side, then yes the dman takes away the pass.

  52. maudite says:

The only thing I can take comfort in is the idiots screaming “shooooot” seem even louder in the Toronto crowd than hear.

    Small victories and silver linings…

  53. Lowetide says:

Now even in shots 16-16, Toronto up 2-0. The Oilers have played this script out in most games this season, and it ends in a loss. The difference early would have been goaltending and luck, now I think we’re down to luck.

    Lordy.

  54. Lucinius says:

    hodgie99,

I cannot disagree more. Always take the pass. Always. If you’re forcing the goalie to play the pass he’s already lost the battle, because he still has to respect the shot, but also has to cheat to cover the wide open player if the pass gets through.

A defensemen who takes the pass away is always doing the right thing. If the goalie loses to the shooter that’s not on him, but the goalie.

  55. DBO says:

anyone have a feed that doesn;t ask me to download a media player update? Usually adthe is solid for me, but it wants to download crap to work.

  67. Dead Cat Bounce says:

    Kessel is 6’0″ 205.

    Hands blessed by the Gods.

  68. Kris11 says:

If Gazdick is gonna do something, now is the time to goon it up. Run a goalie, etc.

  69. Lucinius says:

    flyfish1168,

It’d be fine if the Oilers could finish. All too many of them struggle to put the puck into the net. They either over pass, can’t connect, hang onto the puck too long, or put the puck right onto the goalie.

They have had a number of really good scoring opportunities in this game; and they haven’t potted a single damn one. Sadly, this is not new.

  70. FastOil says:

Not sure how the other feed is working for you, and not 100% certain about this is correct (haven’t had to try a feed since the lockout), but I seem to remember you can just ignore/close the prompt to download media player and it will still play fine.

Not sure you actually want to watch at the moment though…

  72. Southern Oil says:

Why did Bachman take his time getting over to cover the post on that 3rd goal?

  73. SK Oiler Fan says:

This team is a disaster in their own end no doubt, but when I see highlights of goals from other games bouncing in off of 2 bodies or bouncing over top of goalies I wonder when we get to see these goals go in for this team. Jones chance a perfect example. Frustrating.

  74. D says:

So now that the OIlers are getting reasonably good goaltending, what’s their excuse now?

  75. Nuckout says:

Well, that’s that. The only ones I have any sympathy for are Bachman and Gagner.

This team deserves an 8-0 drubbing, from the Leafs no less. Next goal, pull Bachman, he could be part of our future. Want him to at least have the illusion of possibly being a part of a winning team in the future.

On another note, anyone catch “Oil Change: All In” episode 1, and have a sick feeling in their stomach for the duration of the episode?

  76. D says:

    Southern Oil,

Lost sight of it maybe? I think he thought the puck was still to his left.

  77. FastOil says:

Can’t watch the game – how’s Gagner doing? Has he tightened up the defense? ;)

  78. Ice Sage says:

The plugin thing is just an advert, ignore it, close whatever box is superimposed over the lower edge and hit the fullscreen button.

Same with firstrow, but it’s more insistent, and the adverts are porn instead of betting.

  83. pboy says:

Patience. Patience. Patience. That’s all you hear around this team. From 6 rings, the new GM, Stauffer, the Sportsnet crew……. This rebuild is in its 7th year now and the frustration level in the fan base seems higher than at any point. Maybe next season when it’s time to renew my companies 4 season tickets, I’ll tell them to send the tickets but be “patient” and I’ll pay when I pay.

It’s just so fucking ridiculous already. 3-0 now.

  84. Kris11 says:

The more I see the D, the more I see that the overall core isn’t much better than last year, which was a D group that could almost never make the playoffs.

Whitney is gone but Grebs and N Schultz have looked pretty bad. J Schultz is still making a lot of mistakes (probably will until next season) and Ference is pretty blah (his poor advanced stats in Boston might have been an accurate representation of the player.) Smid is okay and Belov too. Petry is very good, but these guys don’t add up to a top pairing, not a good one anyway.

Injuries and goaltending and bad puckluck are a killer, but this team with this D group would need to be very lucky to make the playoffs. Instead they have had bad luck and an awful record.

Reminds of some of those TBay teams. Tons of talent at F, but such a bad D.

    —-

Yak looks frustrated and confused. He could use 5 games in the AHL to get confidence and slow things down.

  85. jp says:

Wow, look at JSchultz run the goalie. He’s mad I guess :)

  86. bookje says:

I find it hard to say much about this team.

  87. RMGS says:

I’m enjoying a fine Crianza and am having a sip for every time:

    - Eberle makes a drop pass
    - Yak mishandles the puck in the D-zone
    - JSchultz is on the ice for a goal against
    - the Oilers give up an odd-man rush
    - the Nuge makes “a nifty little pass (attempt)” just inside his blue line
    - the Oilers shoot the puck without anyone driving the net

Haven’t reached the second intermission, and I’m definitely tipsy, bordering on drunk.

PS: I miss David Perron and Taylor Hall.

  88. pboy says:

    Ice Sage,

There’s a waiting list. Edmonton fans (myself included) are too stupid to vote with our pocketbooks. We fill the building, line up for the $90 beers, buy out all the merchandise, 50-50 tickets out the ass and then we piss and moan about the organization not “listening” to us. Katz is hearing us loud and clear, 6 rings & Co shit in our collective hats and we smile and ask for more.

Kick back with a cold one and watch an episode of Oil Change, man. Make a frown your umbrella.

  101. Bulging Twine says:

Notice how close together Toronto is when breaking out of their own zone compare with how wide the Oilers are. The non puck carrying winger tends to stay on his own boards rather than moving up the ice closer to the puck carrier. Often the result is long rink wide passes and more intercepted passes. Toronto makes shorter passes and less turnovers.

  102. Rebilled says:

The management and/or Oilers media will start calling this A CURSE! sometime soon.

  103. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Another thing… can we just hire a guy on each line that can figure out Hemsky and Eberle shoot the puck and create gift-wrapped rebounds?

If I was Jones I’d be making a b-line for the net everytime I’m on the ice with one of those guys and they cross the blue line.

  104. justDOit says:

If I’m reading the mood of the Oiler faithful correctly (and I am…), then I think some lyrical genius from GnR is in order:

I used ta do a little but a little wouldn’t do it

I just keep trying’ ta get a little better

Said a little better than before

  110. OilBuzz says:

That play with four oilers past the goal line exemplifies the biggest problem with our team. No defensive accountability.

  111. Lucinius says:

    The sad thing?

The Oilers are missing their top four LWers. That’s right, all four of their LWers are out of the game (Hall, Perron, Joenssu, Smyth). That’s kind of amazing, in all the wrong ways.

Oilers need to get some breaks going their way; they look like a team that just doesn’t believe they can win.

  112. Nuckout says:

Eakins is beginning to show himself as being part of the problem.

Is it just me, or is there no fire or passion in this man whatsoever? He’s a robot, and I think the emotionless attitude is starting to rub off on the players. Being OK with any loss is not ok in pro sports, ever. Eakins defies this, however, by finding positives in losses and understating the reasons why they lost the game. Almost bordering on making excuses and dodging responsibility.

A huge part of pro sports is the passion and drive to win. I have seen none of that from Eakins as of yet. I’m not saying “Fire Eakins”, but seriously…. Fire Eakins.

Folks: a year ago, two years ago, etc, you would never bet that the Leafs would dominate the “rebuilding” OIL. Oh my goodness, I am at the game, and I didn’t want to believe my friends in the NHL who tell me the OIL are a “guarentee 2 points”, but this teams sucks so much ass, I can quote Corsi, I can analyze strategy, I can talk to insiders, but this team is f@cked, and so far behind where they should be…What are fans going to do: we have nuthin’

It’s funny after reading some of these comments. I am not as pessimistic tonight as others (I do have my moments but not tonight). Surely we have to pot a couple in the 3rd.

We hoped for reasonable, and we got shit like usual. The Oilers are a group of talented hockey players that play like individuals, and have no drive to win. Even our coaches don’t have the fire. Losing culture seems here to stay…

  124. alice13 says:

The problem with Eakins as I see it (in hindsight, of course) is that MacT went all-in, the GM changed, the roster changed, the coach changed. If the coach had stayed – and of course I don’t know if Eakins would have been willing to be Krueger’s x-and-o’s assistant – at least then you’d have somebody to take the fall now with 3 wins and November knocking. Eakins can’t be fired at this stage (and I don’t believe it’s warranted anyhow) so unless Lowe’s falling on his sword my guess is we’re going to see a shake-up trade that we lose. Hope not.

  125. Lowetide says:

D: The Oilers really are out of excuses, don’t you think LT?They’re a bad team. Here’s hoping for the third period explosion, sigh.

Of course, but you can’t get anywhere from here. you can make it worse by making a stupid trade, or you can send people down or fire the coach but it’s not going to work.

Start as you mean to go. MacT did that. Stay the course. If the team finishes 28th then they finish 28th.

The coach is too new (and changing coaches every year sends the wrong signal to players) and MacT has a recent tradition of winning.

I can understand the team losing if the problems were that the marginal players were making mistakes, etc (the Bachman’s and Jones’), but its the first and second line players that haven’t found their game yet. That’s a problem.

  161. rich says:

It may very well be that if they were to make a move right now that they’ll regret it, however this team really does lack heart and it shows in the way they play night in and night out.

There is no resiliency. There is little push back. There is a losing culture and while it’s not realistic to expect it to turn around overnight, the fact is that their play at home is getting worse, they can’t hold a lead on the road and the only consistent thing we’ve seen this season is that opponents are not afraid to take their liberties on the Oilers best players.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that what would really help is some kind of outward releasing of the pressure because it’s building. Like two years ago when Hall lashed out at Renney late in another loss, something needs to happen and soon.

  162. RMGS says:

  169. Thinker says:

Hey LT, the thought crossed my mind today that maybe now is the time to go big game hunting. It would be nice to have one more top six player to push perron down. Prices could be lower this year, as the salary cap crunch has come into effect. Chicago added Hossa via ufa, and I think we should look to do the same. I liked alex steen, but he’s too expensive now given his hot start. If we think that the cap is going up, then I say lock in jshultz and yak, then try to get a long term deal on a really good player at a bit of a discount.

I just don’t think he gets a full season to do it, so I hope he turns it around by mid-season.

I’ve raised this point before from a career management / compensation perspective. Compensation in the NHL is more than just money, it’s also the chance to win the Cup, play in a nice building, be on a team that has a winning culture. My hope is that a request by Hall or RNH to leave town will wake up the ownership.
