OILERS AT CANADIENS G10, 13-14

The Edmonton Oilers won’t play tonight with a full deck, but they need this road win to salvage a very difficult early portion of the season. A 2-3-1 road trip represents a major victory when you consider this team flew into Ottawa winless in 4 games. No sir. Tonight’s a big game. Azorcan3

It’s an open question as to what the lines will look like tonight, I’m just going to list the forwards and blue in order of importance (and with the assumption that Jordan Eberle is playing).

FORWARDS

  1. R Jordan Eberle
  2. R Ales Hemsky
  3. C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
  4. L David Perron
  5. C Boyd Gordon
  6. L Nail Yakupov
  7. C Mark Arcobello
  8. C Will Acton
  9. R Ryan Jones
  10. L Ben Eager
  11. R Tyler Pitlick
  12. L Luke Gazdic

I think that’s right. Oilers don’t have enough forwards with Hall, Smyth and Gagner unavailable and Brown out of town. If Eberle doesn’t play, Grebeshkov might be a forward.

DEFENSE

  1. Jeff Petry
  2. Justin Schultz
  3. Andrew Ference
  4. Anton Belov
  5. Ladislav Smid
  6. Denis Grebeshkov
  7. Nick Schultz
  8. Taylor Fedun

So, there’s that. The Oilers have 4 pairs of defensemen but can’t ice four lines. Unusual. Fedun’s callup was listed in AHL transactions but I haven’t seen it elsewhere.

comedy

The Oilers traded Mike Brown last night, it was a good trade in two ways. First, they got a draft pick in return–a 4th–and that has value. I’ve spoken to a few draft people in the last few weeks, and it seems as though this year is not a strong one for the draft. It doesn’t matter. Mike Brown’s CORSI ON was 372nd out of 419 NHL forwards this season. Ryan Jones, Tyler Pitlick and anyone else who is thrown in there is extremely likely to be better.

And it’s a positive in that the organization’s management picked the right player to offload. Adding Ben Eager to the roster gives them a more capable veteran, someone who can do more things and has more experience with things like goal scoring and playing with skill (should it be required). This is a positive all around.

mahovlich

I could choose 100 painful pictures from my youth involving the Habs, but Frank Mahovlich wearing that uniform is pretty damn difficult. Mahovlich won 4 Stanley’s with the Leafs and was a big part of the 1971 and 1973 Montreal Stanley’s. The Big M was a tall drink of water who was a tough out when he got up to speed and he could shoot the puck well enough to score anywhere inside the blueline (this would be the old blueline).

Habs gave up Mickey Redmond (an outstanding young scorer, he would suffer a career ending back injury just a few short years later), Bill Collins (a competent to good checking C who could penalty kill and score when given the icetime) and Guy Charron (a long forgotten but talented offensive player). It was a good deal for Detroit, would have been a great one with health for Redmond, but it was a perfectly timed ‘perfect fit’ trade by Sam Pollock: his young offensive wingers (Redmond, Marc Tardif) were taking their own sweet time getting up to speed, and this was a veteran team, a Beliveau team, an Henri Richard team, and they simply didn’t have time to wait for greatness.

So they traded for it, won the Stanley and broke my heart. I’ll forgive them about 50 years after I die.

Lots of giveaways and losing all the puck battles. No tenacity, or intensity for a team that is not doing very well. Oh man.

  2. VanOil says:

    BlacqueJacque:
    Sorry lads, I’m done.

Throwing in the towel on my fandom for this franchise.Too much disappointment and shame.I wore my oiler xolours with pride before and during the rebuild, but this season is too much.

We have a greedy fuck of an owner who hires incompetent friends. We have mocked the hockey gods by tempting fate with three first overall picks. We shit on a coach we just hired. Then we hire an unproven rookie coach to replace him.

This team is the laughing stock of the league for good reason.Whether it’s the Katz Kurse or Old Boys Omen or just some giant karma conspiracy by the entire universe, being a fan of this team is like tattooing “bitch” on your own forehead in the first day of prison. It’s a self-inflicted badge of shame that will follow you the rest of your life.

    Good luck to you lads.

    I am done.

I admire your courageous decision and wish you best luck in future endeavors. The disease of Oilers fandom can have long term negative effects on your mental health witness Hunters love/hate bipolar relationship with the Oilers and DSFs Gollum like love jilted worship.

  3. OilClog says:

Yakupov is playing ugly, but to replace him with Gazdic? Grotesque

Eakins needs to reassemble his thoughts and adapt to the team he has. He also needs to remove the hold over assistant coaches.

I’m beginning to wonder if Bucky and Smith were held for this very reason. If everything fails, they have two to behead from the staff, be safe for another go around.

Maurice and Kruger as assistants?! What a soap opera.

  4. RMGS says:

    Lowetide:
The player I’m most worried about right now is Yakupov. Is head is swimming. Seriously.

This. Kid’s lost without the puck as usual but now is also handling the puck like a grenade. He needs a goal.

  5. Lowetide says:

12-8 in the 5×5 Corsi battle in the first period. Most of that period was fine imo, but that one shift got them running around and that’s all she wrote.

  6. gwdsfo says:

Wonder if Jones realizes these may be his final two periods in the NHL even with Smyth out?

  7. Well Oiled and Enthusiastic says:

    russ99,

I’m building a perception that we are defending and reaching for Yak but it isn’t entirely justified. After two games with Montreal that kid is getting schooled by peers like Gallagher and Galchenyuk. Absolutely schooled. Appears like much more hockey IQ in those guys.

Time might his friend, but man, he just isn’t showing a complete game (or even an offensive game) that shows he is worthy for top of his class status. I hope that dam bursts eventually, but as the shifts role by (and they are CHOICE shifts) the narrative just isn’t good.

  8. alice13 says:

And then it (RNH play) led to the clusterfuck that became Gazdic’s penalty.
But Eberle had 2 chances to clear during that, and as good as he was on the Perron pk, it pains me to say that both times he thought it would just finesse it’s way over the blue line. Blue line = Mtl has to clear zone, it’s ok to give it a stronger tap to Make Sure that happens.

  9. leadfarmer says:

So I asked this at the beginning of the season but what’s the over/under on Eakins lasting 30 games.

  10. Ice Sage says:

This Wild – Predators game is pretty good – speed, skill, effort and smarts all on display. I’ve missed those things as an Oiler fan.

  11. leadfarmer says:

Wish the NHL would let young players who are struggling like Yakupov to go to the AHL for some time. He needs the game to slow down for him a little so he can gain some confidence

  12. Jon K says:

The shots and attempted were close, but the Canadians controlled the play and actually possessed the puck more, by my recollection.

First few shifts with more control and shots this period.

  13. leadfarmer says:

This team needs some guys that can score dirty goals other than Smyth. These guys keep trying to pass it into the net.

  14. cabbiesmacker says:

    leadfarmer:
Wish the NHL would let young players who are struggling like Yakupov to go to the AHL for some time.He needs the game to slow down for him a little so he can gain some confidence

Maybe he’ll get what he needs playing for his next NHL team.

  15. jp says:

Yakupov is kind of a one-trick pony. Unless he’s hammering a 1-timer it’s mediocre to bad.

Not that I’ve lost all hope, but it’s not looking good at the moment.

  16. justDOit says:

Didn’t they trump Belov up as having a nasty side to his game? I’m enjoying the ‘closet pocket twenty’ aspect of his play overall, and he’s adapted well despite missing considerable TC time, but I don’t see anything particularly nasty yet.

  17. justDOit says:

    leadfarmer:
So I asked this at the beginning of the season but what’s the over/under on Eakins lasting 30 games.

    And which did you take?

  18. "Steve Smith" says:

    leadfarmer:
So I asked this at the beginning of the season but what’s the over/under on Eakins lasting 30 games.

    Thirty games.

  19. VanOil says:

There seems to be much less tolerance for Yak and JSchultzs perfectly predictable sophomore slumps than say Gagner and Coglianos or even Nuges. We have all been waiting a long time but these kids have yet to play a seasons worth of games.

  20. justDOit says:

Here’s how I would run a practice for Eakins.
    .
“Everybody here – watch Eberle. Do what he does. If you need help, ask Eberle.”

  21. Lowetide says:

Nice sequence by Yakupov there leads to a PP. That’s the kind of thing he needs to have happen, something good, something to build on. Confidence at a low ebb, but that was a nice play by 64.

  22. fuzzy muppet says:

Real nice shift there by Yak. Put a few of those together and the slump will be over

  23. spoiler says:

A glimmer of life in this Raggedy Ann game. Please Nail a goal on this powerplay.

  24. jp says:

Back to Yakupov, that’s 2 useful defensive plays in the last 4 minutes (one in the D zone, the other in neutral ice). Maybe he’s getting it (or getting it back – I don’t remember him being this bad before).

  25. D says:

One of Yak’s best shifts this season?

  26. TartanArmy says:

    Turn it up boys.

  27. B S says:

Well, time to mute it. When they start talking about perimeter shots and dumping it on net during a 4 on 4 it’s time to shut them up. Suddenly I miss the CBC broadcasts.

  28. gr8one says:

    Lowetide:

You just typed my exact same thought process.

  29. danny says:

Dubnyks game is getting better but he is still hanging too deep into his crease and kicking massive rebounds straight into the slot.

Being an Oiler fan is kinda like being an old man playing blues guitar on a back porch in the deep south. Nobody knows the trouble we’ve seen.

  30. TartanArmy says:

Why is Jones on the pp?

  31. fuzzy muppet says:

Of course Jones is rewarded for terrible play with PP time. Then his first touch is a giveaway.

    Eakins is full of shit

  32. Derek says:

    Well Oiled and Enthusiastic:

I wonder if being on his second coach, and learning a second system of play in two years in his second language has any effect on this. Or that after 10 games everyone in the media is trying to trade him for struggling while ignoring the above.

  33. justDOit says:

Ryan Jones. A graveyard for plays. 1st PP unit. When a coach’s hunch works, it’s genius.

  34. spoiler says:

Why is Ryan Jones allowed to handle the puck through the neutral zone?

  35. Dead Cat Bounce says:

Ryan Jones is not an NHL hockey player.

  36. Bulging Twine says:

Jones on PP? Killing it. Give away and offsides.

  37. fuzzy muppet says:

    Derek,

    Imagine being Gagner!

  38. spoiler says:

Only took 95 seconds to gain the zone on the PP.

  39. Dead Cat Bounce says:

Jones has lost 3 puck battles so far on this PP.

  40. B S says:

I was away for part of the 1st so someone can fill me in, but has this entire game looked like Montreal has a PP?

  41. BlacqueJacque says:

    RMGS,

    It wasn’t a joke.

When I get home, I’m burning my shirts, jerseys, hat, cards, and keychain. Yes, that includes my signed Yakupov. And yes, I am burning it, and no, I won’t sell it or give it away.

This is a fucking ridiculous hobby. I am a grown man losing big chinks of my life working out of town, in part to support my Oilers habit. I’m spending over a thousand dollars a year on cable TV just so I can watch kids 10 years younger than me play fucking low-scoring hockey on the 50 or so days I am home. I spend another thousand or two on tickets. I spend another few hundred to a thousand on merchandise and God only knows what on pizza, beer, and wings.

All this to watch fucking spoiled, arrogant shits like Taylor Hall play a game for a living. I work out of town and make very good money, but if I spent 30 years doing as much work as I can, I’d earn maaaybe as much as he will this year. And I know that in 10, 15 years at the most, the construction boom in the oil sands will end and all we will have are shutdowns and maintenance and that will require a tenth of the manpower being used now.

For putting up with all that, all I get is shame. I can’t handle the cognitive dissonance any more. I am spending a fortune to support a team whose logo is now the international symbol for “loser”, a fortune I will not have in a decade or so. On top of that my city is being bamboozled by Richie McBillions to build a $500m arena to celebrate these fucking losers and spoiled kids that will bolt for New York, San Jose, Anaheim or some other cozy/ritzy location at the first opportunity.

    Goodbye, everybody.

  42. Masamax says:

I appreciate the idea that this team has been bad for many years, and blaming the coach seems premature. But let’s look at this PP as a microcosm. 18 power plays in a row without a goal. They didn’t get a single shot on that man advantage, which is more common than uncommon so far this season it seems. Ryan Jones on the PP for no apparent reason.

This is brutal. And I’m sorry, but when your PP drops from top 10 to this shite, who am I supposed to look to for responsibility?

  43. gr8one says:

    Fucking brutal.

  44. Romulus Apotheosis says:

well, that PP was simply disgusting. what an embarrassment. This team needs to start playing against shame if not the other team.

  45. Lowetide says:

    Hemmer with the Hummer.

  46. spoiler says:

    HEMMMMMMMEEEEEERRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!

  47. OilBuzz says:

I have officially tired of Eakins. Jones on the PP after his horrendous play this game? WTF is he thinking?

  48. fuzzy muppet says:

    Hemmer!

  49. justDOit says:

I know he heard me say shoot. Know it!

  50. Derek says:

    Please don’t leave us Ales.

  51. SK Oiler Fan says:

A little better this period, but I have a serious questions to other posters who watch other teams more often: Forget the stats for this one. Are there other teams that look as bad as the Oilers have for some games in the past 3 years?
Do other teams go whole shifts without touching the puck? Do other teams have periods where the giveaways are so bad that someone who has never watched hockey can tell how terrible a plays they were? Are there other teams where some nights you can tell it’s over after the first shift?
I would feel a lot better if other teams have looked as bad as the Oilers have looked at times.
At least Hemsky came to play.

  52. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    Hemsky. The only Oiler.

  53. justDOit says:

    OilBuzz,

If Jones is seen back on any PP – I’m with ya.

  54. B S says:

Silly Czech should have just dumped it in. What was he thinking?

  55. hags9k says:

Beaut! As an aside if Jones sees the PP again the remote is going through the TV.

  56. rich says:

Dead Cat Bounce: Ryan Jones is not an NHL hockey player.

This. He’s an ECHL hockey player. Period.

  57. spoiler says:

Damn, that would have been sweet.

  58. Lucinius says:

That right there is Hemsky going; “fuck this, if no one else is going to do their jobs I’m going to score and show ‘em young kids how to play NHL hockey!”.

  59. Derek says:

Like that Yak went to the net for that after losing it.

  60. D says:

Don’t forget Arcobello with the assist.

  61. hags9k says:

Perron should be the net front guy on the PP.

  62. wordbird says:

Junior league move by Hemsky. whatta bum.

  63. Rebilled says:

I’m not watching this game but it seems like Jones is having a good game.

  64. TartanArmy says:

Hemsky and Eberle are the only 2 players that are bringing it tonight. Hemsky has reinvented his game and has brought solid consistency through 10 games this year.

  65. Lowetide says:

    Rebilled:
I’m not watching this game but it seems like Jones is having a good game.

    Lordy.

  66. B S says:

    SK Oiler Fan,

Not at “times” not plural. Other teams have had a bad game, sometimes against the Oil, but I can’t recall any with multiple. We’ll wait and see with the flames when they have their first losing streak.

  67. TartanArmy says:

Eager??? Was that his first shift of the night???

  68. OilBuzz says:

I feel like we’d be better off shorthanded then we would with Jones on the ice

  69. justDOit says:

    Rebilled:

    As is HAGS9K’s remote.

  71. spoiler says:

    YEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHH BBBAAAAAAAABBBBBBYYYYY

  72. fuzzy muppet says:

    Yes!!!!!!! Smid duffs it in!!!!

  73. Wolfie says:

What’s that saying? The night is darkest right before the dawn.

  74. TartanArmy says:

    Um……..Smid? So confused…….

  75. justDOit says:

    Smid?

    Ah-hem. Lordy.

  76. jp says:

    Smid!!!?!?!?!
    SMID!!!!!!

  77. Lucinius says:

    SMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID!

    Wooooo!

    All is well!

  78. rich says:

  79. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    Smid. The only other Oiler.

    The Czechs.

  80. danny says:

Shit I thought that was Yak and did a pretty big fist pump for the kid.

  81. B S says:

    BlacqueJacque,

Bye BJ. Alternative suggestion is what I do. Don’t pay for it. Online streams, and don’t buy gear or tickets if you don’t like how they’re playing (picked up an Ebs shirt a while back during a winning stretch, waiting desperately for them to make the playoffs so I can justify a Smyth jersey).

  82. fuzzy muppet says:

Yak’s last few shifts have been real nice. Keep building kid

  83. unca miltie says:

    reading this is too funny..

  84. spoiler says:

DO NOT WASTE A SMID GOAL YOU OILERS!

    They’re rarer than Christmas.

  86. Lowetide says:

    Smid. Is he new?

  87. hags9k says:

    Smid says hate this!

  88. lance says:

    hahahaha. Laddy.

Greek tragedies were often like comedies too.

  89. VanOil says:

Is Gordon nursing an injury? Or was he waived allowing Pitlick to take the draw? It would explain but not justify Jones as the Smytty replacement on the PP.

Bring up Germat for the Wing and Marincin for the D we obviously need less good old Canadian boys and more Czech and Slovaks.

  90. alice13 says:

Smid scored that one for Black Jack, he heard your cry!

  102. Thor762 says:

    BlacqueJacque,

I hear what you’re saying and quite honestly I’ve thought the same a time or two myself. But maybe instead of burning it all, give it away to some kids that could never afford it. You can purge yourself of this oilers habit and make someone’s day that doesn’t really understand how bad the Oilers are playing at the same time. Just a thought.

  103. fuzzy muppet says:

I don’t recall a player changing my opinion of himself more drastically than Arcobello. Hockey sense up the wahzoo

  108. spoiler says:

IF, and it’s a big IF, the Oil pull out a win in this game, one Lars Eller is going to be embarrassed they lost to a Junior team… Does that then make the Habs Junior B?

  109. SK Oiler Fan says:

Smid: What’s the Oiler’s record when he scores?
Who mentioned the Oilers lulled the habs into a false sense of security in the first? Genius strategy.

  110. VanOil says:

    spoiler,

When LT finally trades Smid I think Belov and Petry might make a pretty good top D pair.

  111. OilBuzz says:

What a turn around… One period the sky is falling, another period we look like contenders

    What he said

  114. leadfarmer says:

Looks like Gagner is spending his spare time teaching faceoffs. Almost up to 30%.

When they trade Smid and Hemsky it will be a very sad day for me.

  115. OilClog says:

If we trade Smid who brings his nastiness? He’s absolutely terrible to have to play against. I don’t move Ladislav, he’s an Oiler.

  116. Old School G says:

OK Ales, it’s been 11 years but our staring contest is over, I blink, you win. You’re next Dubnyk.

  117. sliderule says:

Yak played a very good period.

He made a couple of turnovers in first period but so did Nuge.

After all the crap we have put up with don’t give up on guys like Yak

  118. RMGS says:

Nice comeback period by the Oilers to keep us all bipolar. Yak looked back (I thought he scored the Smid goal and spilled even more wine) and Hemsky should retire an Edmonton Oiler.

Who the hell needs Finns when we have Czechs?

  119. spoiler says:

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that Kypreos’ word of the day was “knee-jerk”?

I thought that was how his nose got like that.

  120. TartanArmy says:

According to the boxscore, Hemsky and Jones are equal on pp ice time…..what’s wrong with that stat? (Albeit they have only 1 pp)

  121. Lowetide says:

42-27 Habs-Oil CF through 2. Oilers need to be better this period.

  122. B S says:

    TartanArmy:
According to the boxscore, Hemsky and Jones are equal on pp ice time…..what’s wrong withthat stat?

where the hell did Hemsky get PP time? I’m almost serious. I didn’t notice him at all, and that might be the biggest problem with the PP. Jones I noticed. I’m usually a Jones supporter, but this has been brutal.

  123. Wolfie says:

LT how is that even possible when shots are 27-25?

  124. Kitchener says:

Pitlick: Solid 1st game. He’s following through on his pre-game interview: skate & hit & keep it simple.
Arco: It’s really easy to like this guy.
Smid: Perhaps the best post-goal smile on the team.
Dubnyk: Looking settled. Phew. 2-2 game after 40.
Eberle: Anyone feel like complaining about his contract today?? Thrilled he’s an Oiler.

    Fun game!

I thought that was how his nose got like that.

Whenever I see Kypreos it takes me immediately back to the Vandebussche fight, which has to be 20 years ago now.

Actually, Jones on the PP was a pretty useful exercise, a 90s lesson for his head coach that he won’t soon forget.

  128. spoiler says:

    waaaaaaaaay better checking

  129. Lowetide says:

Man, the Nuge is really working hard tonight. That entire 1line has looked better since “the shift”

  130. jp says:

RNH is just such a wonderful player.

  131. spoiler says:

Lots of forward support in our own end all of a sudden.

    RMGS,

    It wasn’t a joke.

When I get home, I’m burning my shirts, jerseys, hat, cards, and keychain.Yes, that includes my signed Yakupov. And yes, I am burning it, and no, I won’t sell it or give it away.

This is a fucking ridiculous hobby.I am a grown man losing big chinks of my life working out of town, in part to support my Oilers habit.I’m spending over a thousand dollars a year on cable TV just so I can watch kids 10 years younger than me play fucking low-scoring hockey on the 50 or so days I am home.I spend another thousand or two on tickets.I spend another few hundred to a thousand on merchandise and God only knows what on pizza, beer, and wings.

All this to watch fucking spoiled, arrogant shits like Taylor Hall play a game for a living.I work out of town and make very good money, but if I spent 30 years doing as much work as I can, I’d earn maaaybe as much as he will this year. And I know that in 10, 15 years at the most, the construction boom in the oil sands will end and all we will have are shutdowns and maintenance and that will require a tenth of the manpower being used now.

For putting up with all that, all I get is shame.I can’t handle the cognitive dissonance any more.I am spending a fortune to support a team whose logo is now the international symbol for “loser”, a fortune I will not have in a decade or so.On top of that my city is being bamboozled by Richie McBillions to build a $500m arena to celebrate these fucking losers and spoiled kids that will bolt for New York, San Jose, Anaheim or some other cozy/ritzy location at the first opportunity.

    Goodbye, everybody.

Brother, I feel your pain. I’ve been there, but alas, my willpower is nil. There has to be support groups for us by now.

That being said, if they pull a win tonight, will you be back?

  166. jp says:

Hahah. Jones looked like a hockey player for like 2.5 seconds, and he scores.

If he can keep doing that, it’s great though.

Christ, we can’t score a goal without a near injury.

  179. Kitchener says:

    nelson88,

    Yes on Petry.

  185. fuzzy muppet says:

Absolutely. He’s a better option than Brown for certain

  186. Derek says:

Imagine this team without Belov. He’s an NHL rookie and he’s the “calming defensive presence” on a pair with J. Schultz.

Jones just bought himself another game.

Maybe even some more PP time. Fuck.

  188. Nuckout says:

ANOTHER lazy play by JSchultz at the blue line, causing a turnover and shot on goal.

  190. MrDooman says:

    Is BJacques back yet?

  191. hags9k says:

Petry playing like this throws the whole cap situation up in the air. But it’s great.

  192. SK Oiler Fan says:

That 4 line can hit the showers now. Eager tried his damnest to give that puck away.
What a difference when they skate and make short, quick passes

  193. Lowetide says:

That’s the best hit I recall Justin Schultz making. Effective.

  194. jp says:

    JSchultz!!!?!?!!?

I’d rather have cotton-eye jones and pitlicker on the 4th instead of eager and i-still-havent-learned-to-cross-the-redline-before-dumping-it-in Gazdic.
