OILERS AT CANUCKS G2 13-14

The Edmonton Oilers haven’t opened a season with two straight losses this century–and that’s a lot of bad hockey teams. The club will be in tough tonight in Vancouver, as the Canucks are a more veteran, established team with better depth and a proven track record. The story for Edmonton going in will be goaltending, the return of the Nuge on the horizon, and the Oilers powerplay. On the Vancouver side, John Tortorella is a general nuisance but his teams will attempt to beat you on the ice and in the alley. Torts double shifted his top two lines at the beginning of the San Jose game and the Canucks came out storming. Should they do that against the young Oilers and the goaltending is wobbly, we may have the game story by 8:30.

dubnyk common1

  • Eakins: “I’m not worried about Dubnyk or any of our other players. It’s the nature of the beast whether we won that game or we lost that game, it’s time to prepare for the next one. I expect a lot of our players to bounce back.”

The Oilers and Devan Dubnyk are in an uneasy part of the marriage currently. The new GM spent the summer looking for an upgrade, and the sense we get is that Dubnyk’s the guy–for now. That’s not a great situation for a goaltender, but this is the world Dubnyk lives in and a strong performance tonight likely calms the waters. I don’t think the Oilers will panic, and I believe Dubnyk is capable, but a solid performance tonight is important.

BABY NUGE RETURNS UNHARMED

rnh22

  •  Eakins: “I want to start off, there’s been some terrible reporting, people who think they have the inside scoop on Nugent-Hopkins that he’ll play next Saturday against Toronto or Thursday against Montreal. Both false. He will play Monday against New Jersey.”

Eakins certainly doesn’t like misinformation, but then again in the absence of facts media will observe and speculate–I don’t think that’s a surprise nor a sin. Either way, it’s great to have him back and there’s no question his addition will make this team better immediately. He’s been off for a time so there’s going to be some rust, but RNH is a wonder and getting him back now is the best possible result.

  • Nugent-Hopkins:“I’m feeling really good. The healing is done and my strength is up where it needs to be.”

No more tripping over bluelines young man. You’re too damn valuable.

aaaPROJECTED LINES AND PAIRINGS

  • Hall-Smyth-Hemsky (likely to get the piss cutters)
  • Gordon-Joensuu-Eberle (Kesler line makes sense, Torts may want to run Richardson line)
  • Arcobello-Perron-Yakupov (love the talent, dangerous defensive road line)
  • Acton-Gazdic-Brown (5 minutes, pray God the Sedins don’t get loose against them)
  • Ryan Hamilton has been called up because someone above isn’t 100%.
  • Smid-Petry (were solid in game one, need a big performance)
  • Ference-Schultz (some good, some bad, need consistency)
  • N Schultz-Belov (Schultz struggled, Belov better–this pairing will be vital tonight)
  • Dubnyk (don’t know, suspect he gets the start, has a good history against Canucks)
  • LaBarbera (if things go awry, he might see action tonight)

YAK CITY

yakupov common

Yakupov had a strange night on  Tuesday, his TOI was up and down like a yo-yo, by period. 5:25 in the first, 1:42 in the second, 7:50 in the third. He ended up 16-11 even shot differential and one hopes we see more of him tonight that we did during the 2nd period Tuesday. Yakupov is a young player, but he’s a game breaker and an extremely skilled fellow. Coach Dallas Eakins is going to have to live with defensive lapses and errors, and for my money a period in which Yakupov plays fewer than 2 minutes while Mike Brown plays 2:35 is worthy of an investigation.

SET PIECE

creative

I think there’s so much creativity in this organization now that we’re going to see cool things nightly. Hall, Hemsky, Perron, Eberle, Schultz, Yakupov and Nuge on the way Monday with Gagner rising. Nice group here. I spent much of the week defending Corsi and its fortune telling ability, and the script for the season will get another chapter tonight. Along with it, the PP and PK are going to be major items on the season-long talking points. There’s simply too much talent for a team like Edmonton to struggle for long on the PP, and the GF totals 5×4 and 5×3 should be impressive. On a night like this one, where the oppositions feels it important to announce their presence with authority, powerplay goals may trump the Corsi. PK could be a major story too.

THE LEAD

WILD AT HEART 3

So far this season, there have been 36 goalies in action. The worst EV SP is .818, shared by two goalies: Devan Dubnyk and Roberto Luongo. That’s your headline for tonight.

    Lucinius,

worked well for the jets. obviously torts did his homework

  2. khildahl says:

I giggle like a little kid every time Smid bulldozes a Canuck.

  3. Lucinius says:

    Belov, stop getting caught!

  4. SK Oiler Fan says:

isn’t that a follow through on a shot? weak

  5. bookje says:

The last two years the Oilers had a kick ass power-play by loading up the talent on one line – why change?

  6. Lucinius says:

    J. Schultz has looked shaky so far.

  7. VanOil says:

Just a hunch, the Oilers might be losing the Corsi battle this period

  8. Lucinius says:

    SK Oiler Fan,

To be fair, the Oilers did get two powerplay goals against the Jets, so its not like it was overly successful; both times the Oilers score it was quick after the aggressive kill left something for them to exploit.

  9. Lowetide says:

Still shaky tonight, DD looks a little better (twitter wildly critical of the breakaway goal but that’s bonus imo) and the Petry goal helped. I’d like to see a long 5×5 run here to see what this team is facing on the road.

  10. khildahl says:

Well… Dubnyk’s save percentage has climbed 39 points in 12 minutes.

  11. SK Oiler Fan says:

    Lucinius,

his cool, calm, no panic approach is impressive at times, but he has to recognize when to make a simpler, more urgent play at certain times.

  12. Yukio says:

    MY GOD YAKUPOV

  13. danny says:

    Peron believes in Corsi.

  14. GordM says:

    what a forecheck by Yakupov!

    Romulus Apotheosis,

And we thought we would slide under the radar…..

  16. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    yak attack!!

Thoughts on Arcobello so far? I’ve liked what I’ve seen thus far this year, for the most part.

  18. Lowetide says:

    speeds:
Thoughts on Arcobello so far? I’ve liked what I’ve seen thus far this year, for the most part.

Yes, agreed. I’m not certain they’ll keep him over Acton, but I would.

  19. Scotty LaDouche says:

Yakupov has a talent for finding lulls in the pace of a game, turning the dial up to 10 out of nowhere and catching the other team offguard.

  20. Yukio says:

    speeds,

I think he’s being boosted a little by his linemates at times, and at times it seems like he’s a tad bit more behind than his linemates.

  21. jake70 says:

Brainfart turnover by Eberle…..is the team drunk tonight?

  22. Andropod says:

    jake70,

    or sick?

  23. danny says:

OT, but I saw my first live NHL game last week… exhibition game between COL and LA in Las Vegas. Got two ice level tickets for 30 bucks each. The 2 hours watching hockey in MGM Grand probably saved me a few hundred in gambling losses. good times.

  24. GordM says:

You are in for a long night when the Sestito/Weiss line can keep you hemmed in.

  25. Yukio says:

We didn’t even get to see that….

  26. Scotty LaDouche says:

    Deja vu

  27. khildahl says:

    Deflected.

  28. Lucinius says:

Petry, Petry… making Dubnyk’s job harder.

  29. jake70 says:

    Sick and drunk I think.

  30. OilClog says:

    Ugly

  31. Lowetide says:

3-1 Vancouver. I’d pull Dubnyk now, not blaming him but this team needs something.

  32. Lucinius says:

    Petry and Hall..

I’m sorry, but Hall needs to go to class on how to fucking pass.

  33. Yukio says:

Hall seems to love dem bad turnovers.

  34. VanOil says:

Oh Oh I am glad I have lots of Beer.

  35. JonyPro says:

Same problem. Oilers don’t know how to get out of their zone

  36. bookje says:

Those goals seemed a bit soft.

  37. bookje says:

    Lowetide:
3-1 Vancouver. I’d pull Dubnyk now, not blaming him but this team needs something.

    I agree.

  38. spoiler says:

Acton for Kesler is a good trade. But there’s likely to be more here.

  39. Lucinius says:

    bookje,

The second Canuck goal looks soft, but as a former goalie that’s the kind of goal you hate because you’re set for the shot and then because of your defender the puck is rising and dipping unexpectedly. They can be surprisingly hard to stop.

  40. Andropod says:

    Ba-ba-ba ba-ba-babara………
Well, rather now than when it counts, eh.

  41. bookje says:

This team doesn’t seem that well prepared. What’s the over/under on when Messier takes over as head coach?

    :)

  42. danny says:

I like that Kesler and Bieksa have those flashy orange skates. Easier to identify assholes from afar.

  43. SK Oiler Fan says:

Can Nuge still dress tonight? fk they haven’t won a draw yet either. Poor DD.

  44. Lowetide says:

Moroz with another goal tonight, 7, 7-3-10.

  45. bookje says:

What the hell is a hairy eyeball?

  46. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    brackenbury:
    Romulus Apotheosis,

glad they are spending the 1st intermission talking about the leafs. c’mon CBC…

  47. VanOil says:

    bookje:
What the hell is a hairy eyeball?

In this case I believe the translation is “Shut the fuck up” dear Mr. Tortorella

  48. Lowetide says:

22-8 in shots for Vancouver, I think they were full value for a terrific period. Edmonton didn’t settle down early and then looked horrible late. It’s funny, luck plays such a big part in the game but right now Dubnyk is looking like the unluckiest guy in the world.

  49. Andropod says:

    bookje:
What the hell is a hairy eyeball?

A glance made with partially lowered eyelashes. This usually indicates suspicion or hostility but may signal other emotions too. :)

  50. danny says:

I google imaged it. Don’t do it.

  51. Lois Lowe says:

    Lowetide:
Moroz with another goal tonight, 7, 7-3-10.

He is an early Cy Young candidate!

  52. bookje says:

    Romulus Apotheosis: who? what?

    ——–
    wow… brutal period.

glad they are spending the 1st intermission talking about the leafs. c’mon CBC…

Bah, I wish Don Cherry had kept going to bed early on Saturdays.

  53. Ribs says:

    bookje:
What the hell is a hairy eyeball?

Whatever you do, don’t put it into a Google images search like I did.

  54. Clay says:

I’m going to preface this by saying I’m as big a Dubnyk supporter as there is, but that second one was deflected at the blueline. He needs to save that.

  55. khildahl says:

Ribs: Whatever you do, don’t put it into a Google images search like I did.

    Oh, God damn you.

You had to know people can’t resist when you say “don’t”.

  56. Romulus Apotheosis says:

don’t tell people not to do something…. just don’t say anything.

  57. B S says:

    VanOil,

I read “Watch your F$%^ing mouth”

  58. khildahl says:

    Clay:
I’m going to preface this by saying I’m as big a Dubnyk supporter as there is, but that second one was deflected at the blueline. He needs to save that.

It changed direction off the stick and then dropped. He had to react to the shot three times.

  59. khildahl says:

Huh. I agreed with Glenn Healy, but I don’t see any flying pigs.

  60. Ribs says:

Arcobello? He has some amazing skates that don’t allow him to glide at all. Once his feet stop moving he quickly comes to a complete stop.

Hall not looking good at all. And it’s not even because he’s playing center. Uh-oh.

Perron fun to watch. A lot of urgency to his game that I wish I saw from more players on this team. Lots of second efforts from him.

  61. SK Oiler Fan says:

Reality sucks sometimes. Lacking experience, hockey smarts, talent, and size that period

  62. Romulus Apotheosis says:

yea. stock. no one’s backchecking… but that Hemsky guy no one wants to mention when he does something good.

  63. Ribs says:

    khildahl: Oh, God damn you.

You had to know people can’t resist when you say “don’t”.

    Romulus Apotheosis:
don’t tell people not to do something…. just don’t say anything.

    Haha…Don’t do it! *Traumatized*

  64. flyfish1168 says:

Everything Dallas has said this team is going to be sure didn’t show in the 1st period. hall is not a centermen and it showing.

  65. crude says:

I think Hall and Duby should never be on the ice together.

  66. Andropod says:

How many games before Messier steps in?

  67. danny says:

was that Flaman Fitness Treadmill Desk for real?

  68. jake70 says:

They got blitzed on those 2 early Belov penalties, haven’t recovered. Of course, PP for Vancouver.

  69. Bulging Twine says:

    Hall really pissing me off!
No defensive awareness or is it no defensive integrity

  70. Lowetide says:

I’m not sure this team has been able to roll lines for an extended period since the season began. The blue seems to be handling the puck like a grenade and the turnovers are rife. Dubnyk is not sharp but he’s not getting a lot of help.

Period 2 begins, I’m actually kind of hoping for a blowout. Lose the first two and re-set.

  71. khildahl says:

    danny:
was that Flaman Fitness Treadmill Desk for real?

I didn’t see the commercial on account of it not being made of bourbon.

  72. Rondo says:

It’s too bad for Taylor Hall having your #1 and #2 centers injured. Hall chances to make the Olympic team has dropped considerably.

  73. crude says:

Looks like the swarm D is easy to beat if you always maintain give-and-go triangle formations.

  74. speeds says:

    Lowetide,

EDM gave up a 2 goal lead last game, maybe they can come back from a 2 goal deficit this game?

  75. Kris11 says:

Yeah, maybe move Hall to LW. Keep Arco at C. Look for a temporary replacement for Arco until Gagner returns.

  76. bookje says:

Maybe the Oilers have motivation problems. Anyone know where Ralph Kruger is?

  77. Andropod says:

2nd game: better or worse than Krueger’s 2nd?

  78. khildahl says:

    bookje:
Maybe the Oilers have motivation problems.Anyone know where Ralph Kruger is?

Would he charge a premium or a discount?

  79. Andropod says:

Oh well, Hall didn’t work at C, keep Arco, hello Nuge. Doesn’t matter to me whether Arco stays where he is or centers Hall and Hemske.

  80. Lucinius says:

    Sigh, Hall.

  81. spoiler says:

    Attaboy, Hall.

  82. Suntory Hanzo says:

    karma

  83. khildahl says:

    That’s a terrible call.

  84. jp says:

    Why is that a penalty?

  85. Andropod says:

Bloody good show by Hall. The boy has balls.

  86. bookje says:

That’s a questionable penalty to call.

  87. SK Oiler Fan says:

fk that, that’s a dive. he looked right at the zebra immediately. same crap every time in van. they live off the pp

  88. Lucinius says:

I liked Hall on Weiss. Did not like him right before that. Two on one and he did his best to see that the play died on his stick.

  89. crude says:

    Weiss sellin it.

  90. VanOil says:

Zone entries for the Oilers should be easy to count this game, they will roughly equal the beers I am going to drink.

  91. bookje says:

The team neeeeds a short handed goal

  92. Scotty LaDouche says:

Hall should make it count next time

  93. Yukio says:

Dubnyk doing the good ol’ flop and hope it hits ya.

  94. jake70 says:

    jp:
    Why is that a penalty?

Because Mark Lee loves calling goals against the Oilers.

  95. Andropod says:

When did this team play worse than this in anyone’s memory?

  96. bookje says:

The oilers simply look terrible, like they didn’t have a preseason to prepare.

  97. Romulus Apotheosis says:

are they cloning sedins now… I think there were 30 on that last pp.

  98. khildahl says:

    Jason Schultz, blocking shots.

  99. Lowetide says:

That was a weak penalty call against Hall, down 4-1 now and this is an excellent chance for the Oilers to show some balls. 4-1, let’s say the game is lost. Can they outscore VAN from here through the end of the game? A good test for the entire team.

  100. khildahl says:

    bookje:
The oilers simply look terrible, like they didn’t have a preseason to prepare.

I’m wondering if Eakins spent too much time evaluating his 12 bottom-six players and not enough working on his system.

  101. RMGS says:

At least David Perron came to play.

  102. jake70 says:

As bad as they are playing, don’t write off an Oiler win. The Oilers are in Luongo’s head…1 goal, then 2….then who knows.

  103. bookje says:

Glad to see Eakins adjust the lines. No point continuing to spread out the talent because it’s not working.

  104. khildahl says:

    Yak needed to shoot that.

    Be selfish, young man!

  105. Andropod says:

    bookje,

    What talent…….
Not to be offensive, but our best players aren’t showing up tonight.

  106. skinny65 says:

Haha danny, you read my mind completely. That’s exactly what I thought when I saw that. And they had like people lining up to use it with with reports in hand. Classic stuff and the only thing worth thinking about while watching this abomination. Perron is the only one that looks to have a clue. What a mess.

  107. Southern Oil says:

I have liked Peron tonight. Other than that all have stunk. I like most want Arcobello to make something of this chance, but I never notice him. Maybe I drink too much during the game. I also would have Hall back on the wing as of Monday. He looks like shit.

  108. Suntory Hanzo says:

Where has 6 been? Seems like I haven’t seen hiim in awhile.

  109. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    khildahl:
    Jason Schultz, blocking shots.

I thought getting that 3rd Schultz would pay off.

  110. danny says:

We need to sign Frank Dux.

  111. VanOil says:

    Suntory Hanzo:
Where has 6 been?Seems like I haven’t seen hiim in awhile.

Broadcast hinted at a sore back

  112. Gret99zky says:

I won’t mind the loss. But I want to see something entertaining. Something good. So far this game sucks.

  113. Andropod says:

How about sending Dallas down and bringing up Todd Nelson? (yes, I know, but a nice thought at this moment anyway)

  114. jake70 says:

Boy Eberle is looking bad ce soir.

  115. FastOil says:

Pretty hard to win hockey games if you dont win any puck battles. Perron and Gordon arent playing badly.

It’s early but the players don’t seem to get the system, terrible puck support.

Pretty hard to miss Pjaarvi the way Perron plays. I hope he stays healthy.

  116. danny says:

Frank Dux would hurt Hansen so bad.

  117. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    wow.

  118. Suntory Hanzo says:

Hint: whichever Sedin carries the puck across the blue line (Henrik) will stop and wait for pass/shot 100% of the time.

  119. Lucinius says:

    I’m done. Enough of this.

  120. Yukio says:

For the love of Joensuu, pull him.

  121. Andropod says:

Make it 10! (in this game)

  122. VanOil says:

10 goals against in 2 games and counting

  123. SK Oiler Fan says:

I’ve seen enough. yakupov out too lunch. DD looking small in there

  124. 8p0intgame says:

Did I just see Gazdic lose the puck in his skates and then look around in confusion?

  125. LMHF#1 says:

Shoulda pulled him after 3. He’s making himself small. No excuse for that.

  126. bookje says:

Somewhere I imagine Ralph Kruger, Tom Renney, Pat Quinn, and Steve Tambellini are all watching with a big grin on their faces.

  127. Romulus Apotheosis says:

I saw JJ go weird into the boards earlier and they said he had back trouble before the game… haven’t seen him since.

    so, that’s great too.

  128. rich says:

Busted my tail to get back to watch this crap?

Early test of the leadership in the room and behind the bench. This is just unacceptable.

  129. crude says:

ooooo k the devon show is over.

  130. Ice Sage says:

Well so much for Dubnyk never stinking 2 games in a row. Ride Vinnie Labarberino

  131. Yukio says:

Looking at Dubnyk’s seasons stats thus far isn’t going to be pretty, here’s hoping that he comes back and plays at a level unbeknownst to us all.

  132. RMGS says:

Nail Yakupov is my favourite Oiler. Someone PLEASE teach him how to play without the puck.

  133. flyfish1168 says:

I hope Dallas definition of puck retrieval doesn’t mean back of our own net.

  134. bookje says:

This is not on Dubnyk – this team is terrible. I am hopping for some hope.

  135. Romulus Apotheosis says:

  143. SK Oiler Fan says:

Gordon is everything Belanger should have been so far

  144. RMGS says:

At least Ales Hemsky and Boyd Godon came to play.

  145. Yukio says:

I giggled a little at the Canuck who took a soft shot from far out, lovely.

  146. Andropod says:

ok balance = 3 bad lines. Let’s start talking about 3 traditional lines?

    1) Nuge – Hall – Eberle
    2) Arco/Gags – Perron – Hemsky
    3) Gordon – Joensuu – Yak City

  147. B S says:

    Fuck off you goddamn goons.

  148. SK Oiler Fan says:

wasn’t that hit 2 seconds too late?

  149. FastOil says:

JS is a forward not a defenceman

  150. jake70 says:

    Shoot Ebs..man.

  151. RMGS says:

    Holy shit. This is chaos.

  152. Romulus Apotheosis says:

are they trying to break Strudwick’s record of being stuck in their own end?

  153. Andropod says:

    Pathetic.

  154. FastOil says:

The Oilers are basically short handed when 94 is on. Sad to see but he cannot skate.

  155. spoiler says:

Eberle logging a lot of ice time tonight. A minute thirty more than Hall, although Hall and Petry lead the team in shifts.

  156. SK Oiler Fan says:

    FastOil,

agreed. I know he’s young yet, but he’s so brutal in his own end right now its hard to believe he could eventually improve enough to not be a major liability.

  157. Lowetide says:

If you’re going to suck, suck badly. There’s no good reason for them to be this bad, so they’re going to have to make some changes. Nuge in, Smyth out? That’s my guess, but I’m not the coach. Whatever they’re doing, it isn’t working.

  158. flyfish1168 says:

Hall -4. He is trying to hard. I hope this stop the talk of converting him to a centerman.

3 coaches in 4 years to many new systems. I feel for Hall and Eberle.

  159. skinny65 says:

Haha, bookje, you made me laugh, cause in spite of my intelligence I felt the same way.
I live in Calgary and I have been crowing to my buddies about all the bad hockey they will have to watch this year. But if I am honest in the last 8 years nobody in this town has watched as much crap hockey as I have. And somehow they get the 2-5 goal and I think maybe?
I’m a moron, I just hope i dont hear from any Nigerian prince’s tonight.

  160. Suntory Hanzo says:

    VanOil,

ok..thanks. Watching online on cbc.ca, and get some lag at times.

  161. Andropod says:

Which of line composition, coaching, systems, and motivation suck the worst right now?

I can only guess that its back to basics and Dallas fighting for his job now.

  162. FastOil says:

After reading that post at ON about the Oilers system I was concerned. They are going to have to protect the net a lot more. I don’t think they are ready as a group to make the adjustments to play this way.

Eakins is in the shit big time. Nostril deep.

  163. D says:

Is this game a one-off LT or another long season? Man.

    Lowetide:
If you’re going to suck, suck badly. There’s no good reason for them to be this bad, so they’re going to have to make some changes. Nuge in, Smyth out? That’s my guess, but I’m not the coach. Whatever they’re doing, it isn’t working.

  164. RMGS says:

“It’s men against boys, and the boys in Edmonton need to learn to play like men.”

In ever thought I would agree with Glenn Healy.

  165. Clay says:

Interesting how telling everyone that you’re going to be a better team is much easier than actually being a better team.

I, for one, think this is good. We are seeing tonight that Hall is no C. He’s been on for all the EVGA. I think we can move on from this experiment once RNH is back.

Also, I think Logan Couture touched on it last year – this Oiler team is one that every other team really wants to beat. I’m sick of hearing about “this talented bunch of youngsters”, and I’m a fan. I can’t imagine how the rest of the NHL feels.

  166. Suntory Hanzo says:

Still don’t like the spin a rama shootout move. Seems illegal the way most do it (Raymond)

That being said, it may be because I hate the Canucks.

  167. Suntory Hanzo says:

Blues beat Panthers in DSF Kumite!

Take solace – it’s so bad he even knows what’s wrong. You’d think in Canada they could find a few more analysts that aren’t complete buttheads.

it’s a testament to attn. cbc is paying to the Oil that they can’t be bothered to notice JJ hasn’t played since 3 minutes into 2nd.

    any updates from elsewhere?

    D:

They are having a bad game, and they are not following the game plan. The coach needs to either get them or get them back. Chaos in their own zone of Quinn era proportions. If they blame the goalie, it’ll be a long season, but Eakins is too smart for that kind of thing.

  171. danny says:

    KUMITE! KUMITE! KUMITE! KUMITE! KUMITE!

  172. Hammers says:

GOD We LOOK BAD . Hall has made at least 5 mistakes . Needs to go back on the wing . Eakins has to get chemistry back together . RNH /Hall / Ebs for Monday . Arco Yak & Perron . Gordon Smyth & Hemsky . don’t care but Joensuu Acton Brown I guess . HATE Healy but his 100% correct boys against men those first 2 periods . 29 shots on Dubnyk . 1 breakaway SH , 1 Deflection of Petry . PP goal 1 really bad goal .

  173. SK Oiler Fan says:

it starts at the back end and I don’t see anybody back there tonight that can consistently flip posession in their own end besides ference if he wasn’t the only dman on his pairing. Not enough complete players on the back end, the problem since 2007. The mess at C doubles the trouble then the G hasn’t bailed anybody out yet.

  174. flyfish1168 says:

the way it was going I thought the knucks was going to hit 60 shots

  175. fuzzy muppet says:

Hall at C looks awful. Still waiting for this accountability that was talked about.

  176. Kris11 says:

I suspect Hall will ask to not play C anymore after this game.

  177. Ribs says:

Romulus Apotheosis: it’s a testament to attn. cbc is paying to the Oil that they can’t be bothered to notice JJ hasn’t played since 3 minutes into 2nd.

To be fair, the Oilers players are popping on to the ice like Plinko balls every shift. I can see how he could be missed.

Conflicting reports: it’s either a bad back or embarrassment.

  179. Suntory Hanzo says:

Nuge looks younger than most of my Grade 12 students…

  180. Kris11 says:

Can they send Smyth down and replace with Omark or whoever? Or does that hurt the cap too much.

This will be a good test of Eakins and getting into these guys’ heads.

  182. Genjutsu says:

I wanted the Hall to C to work so bad. But its not working at all.

Hemsky’s brilliance can in no way make up for Hall sheer incompatence.

Nuge can’t get in soon enough.

  183. sliderule says:

    You can’t blame Eakins

That last shift Schultz was chasing Kesler all by himself for about thirty seconds.

The only way you can break a cycle is by overloading.

The oilers have been slipping back into the old man system

  184. Kris11 says:

I’d give Belov a game off, too.

  185. Lowetide says:

The worst time to make sweeping changes is during a period like this. Oilers dealt Lubo during time just like this–mistake!!!!

  186. SK Oiler Fan says:

haven’t liked hemsky on the pk

  187. pboy says:

I’d like to see the 4th line spend the 3rd period messing with the piss cutters.

  188. Romulus Apotheosis says:

RMGS: Conflicting reports: it’s either a bad back or embarrassment.

so, you’re saying he’s just hiding down at the end of the bench under a pile of coats?

  189. Yukio says:

There’s a small, teeny tiny little glimmer of hope, if they can make that kind of play more often

  190. Kris11 says:

I’d roll Hall to LW this period to see what happens. Put him with Arco and Eberle, who played together in OKC.

  191. pboy says:

Sestito threw the first punch and lost the fight. Assclown.

  192. Suntory Hanzo says:

Smyth can dump it in like a boss. Full stop.

  193. bookje says:

Eberle is looking good. Hall, Yak, and others can’t make a pass.

  194. Zelepukin says:

Lessons that need to be learned from this game:

Dubynk needs to stop relying on his size and move. 10 goals in 2 games, sorry but your goaltending is part of the problem. He needs to do better job of positioning himself centrally to where the puck is coming from.

Belov and J. Schultz need to be split up. These two are push overs physically and if they don’t move the puck right away, the physical pressure is too much for them.

Smid needs to give his head a shake and make a better first pass out of the d-zone.

Hopefully Arco got some nice keepsakes from his time in the show cause that was probably his last game ever.

Yaks needs to shoot the puck. He has to start to become an Ovi level of shot attempts forward.

Hall needs to go back to LW. Give-away machine.

Ebs needs to take it to another level. Along with Hall it’s almost embarrassing that these two were invited to team Canada.

Smytty needs to retire. At no point does any one ever say, thank god Smytty was on the ice there.

JJ is clearly hurt and Hamilton should be in next game.

  195. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    J. Schultz…. never follow the guy behind your own net… crap.

  196. bookje says:

    SK Oiler Fan:

I haven’t liked the Oilers on the game

  197. "Steve Smith" says:

We’re outhitting the Canucks by a hefty margin, and I have it on good authority that that has something to do with winning hockey games.

  198. spoiler says:

NIck Schultz tries a no-look pass with the 4th line out against the Bobbsey Twins. Leads to a heap of trouble. Whole game has been like this.

  199. Andropod says:

We all hoped it would be different but hey we were down our two top centers and despite the best efforts by the coach, we’re not good enough yet to get by without those two. The Hall experiment did not work made worse by having lion heart in Hall’s place on the wing. Also with a new coach, new systems, no NHL coachng experience, pre season wasted in evaluation vs settling down the team necessitated by the roster cleanout.

Im hoping Dallas is as smart as he looks, goes back to basics, puts the regular lines together, 1/2/3 instead of 2.5/2.5/2.5.

So it is what it is, Dallas gets to show his chops, we get Nuge back, and Gags soon, and then we
    see what happens next.
