OILERS AT CAPITALS G6, 13-14

It appears the Edmonton Oilers will go with Jason LaBarbera in net tonight, and I believe it is the right call. LaBarbera has rarely been an NHL starting goaltender but does have some nice numbers and could certainly be counted on in the short term. We hope Devan Dubnyk can regain his form and return to the #1 job. I’ll update the lineup later, and of course Dubnyk could end up playing (I can’t find absolute confirmation on LaBarbera). Azorcan3

As big as the goaltending problem may appear to be, Craig MacTavish and Dallas Eakins may have a bigger problem on the horizon. One never knows if this sort of thing comes from a frustrated Dad or is real, but this won’t look good and may not end well:

yak controversy1yak controversy2

Eronko works for sports.ru and is certainly a credible source. Previous to this item, Yakupov has been a model citizen and I would suggest that there’s every chance that this will be blown wildly out of proportion. Still, it’s out there and it is absolutely a concern. Joanne Ireland wrote this piece about it from Yakupov’s pov. Shortly after publishing this post, I found this from Ian McLaren at the Score.

Update 8:52. About 2 hours after posting this, a Craig Custance tweet quoting agent Igor Larionov:

custance

So, that has to be viewed in a very positive way. The story out of Russia came from the Dad (based on earlier tweet), we heard yesterday from the frustrated player and now today the agent chimes in.

MORE UPDATES

  • “My goal is to play in the NHL. I have not had any conversations (with Neftekhimik). I love it here” – Nail Yakupov
  • “I was shocked to hear (the KHL rumors). First thought was, “Is dad trying to do something?”. But no, he’d never go behind my back”- Yakupov
  • Yakupov’s dad Rail (yes, Rail) Yakupov to Sport-Express: “We never thought about Nail’s coming back. Don’t believe internet rumors”

So, that’s an important side of the story told (this is all from Slava Malamud (also from Sport Express Russia). We’ve heard from player, agent and parent. We now await the Neftekhimik head coach.

jolyThe Washington Capitals had their own problems with #1 overal picks, with Greg Joly (1974, in photo, 365 NHL games) and Rick Green (1976, 845 games) preceeding Alexander Ovechkin (2004) who has certainly covered the bet. Washington is a funny team at the draft, they make enormous errors but have done some nice things too. They are certainly risk takers.

DallasEakinsWhiteboardSpedUpThis is clearly sped up (and funny) but it appears to me that the Oiler players are still having trouble with the “swarm” as designed by Dallas Eakins. The play he’s designing here appears to be the Hemsky play where he was behind the net and attempted to get the puck out at the end of regulation against Toronto (didn’t work). I remember seeing Ryan Getzlaf do that years and years ago, wish it had worked Saturday.

nuge gets knocked downWell this pissed me off even more than watching it live! How in hell was this missed? Holy hell, zebra’s, there’s a goalie at the other end with his career in jeopardy and one of the reasons is this non-call? Brutal. BRUTAL!

BOXCARS

  1. Taylor Hall 5, 1-4-5
  2. Mark Arcobello 5, 0-5-5 (rookie)
  3. Ryan Smyth 4, 3-1-4
  4. Boyd Gordon 5, 3-1-4
  5. David Perron 5, 1-3-4
  6. Jordan Eberle 5, 1-3-4
  7. Ales Hemsky 5, 1-3-4
  8. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 3, 2-1-3
  9. Justin Schultz 5, 0-3-3
  10. Jesse Joensuu 3, 1-0-1

Don’t look now, there’s a lot of guys enjoying very fast starts offensively. If the goaltending gets straightened out, this team is going to soar. More to come, I’ll have lineups when they are published.

PROJECTED LINEUPS

This is from Jon at ON, but seems right. With the knowledge that Yakupov is sitting, we’ll go with:

  • Nuge-Hall-Hemsky
  • Arcobello-Smyth-Eberle
  • Gordon-Perron-Joensuu
  • Acton-Gazdic-Brown
  • Smid-Petry
  • Ference-N Schultz
  • Belov-J Schultz
  • LaBarbera

Well they might as well leave, Yak isn’t playing.

Seriously, I’ve seen 5 different rumour sites retweeted with Yak rumours.

    Andropod,

I can see that, but I can’t see Taylor Hall’s blind cross-ice passes being part of the coach’s gameplan… which he continues to do after the coach all but calls Hall out by name in the media.

I’m actually fine with benching Yak even for two games – I thought he looked too nervous, too selfish, too determined to do something – and some time away from the ice to watch the game may do him good.

I just wish it hadn’t been Yak who’d been the first of the three to get HSed, because he’s Russian and has a personality, and the media already love focusing on him.

If Hall had been scratched (deservedly so) for some of the shit he did as a sophomore (which the media, along with us. were making excuses for by saying stuff like “oh he’s learning what he can do, what he can get away with” after Hall fails yet another 1-on-2), scratching Yak wouldn’t be singling him out as bad.But Yak’s already the outsider, the guy who doesn’t drink, doesn’t speak English great, who has some different ideas about behavior on the ice than the dinosaurs running the game… he already gets enough flak as it is.Hell, he’s even a third line left wing, when both Hall and Nuge enjoyed #1 status (or at least #1 offensive opportunities) from their first days in the league. And there’s no denying that if Eberle was approaching 30 and Hemsky was Pisani type, Yak would be getting cherry starts and linemates.

So yeah, this poor kid has a lot of things that make him feel like an outsider already. He didn’t need this.

As much as I’m fine with the benching, I agree with most of this. All that you describe – plus the undeniable world-class talent – make Yak a favourite for many Oilers supporters, including this one.

But, from what we’ve seen the kid’s no shrinking violet. He came over as an ethnic, linguistic, and religious minority as a teenager to Sarnia, Ontario – of all places – and proceeded to become the top ranked prospect in the world – a future superstar. He can handle this.

I doubt they’re going to make a trade now. Team looked good in TOR, if they get good goaltending tonight and win I bet nothing changes tomorrow or later in the week. Yak likely draws in tomorrow night but that’s not certain either.

    Frelbo,

Arcobello played a fair amount on the wing during his time in ok city.

If he keeps playing like he has first five games I would say that Gagner will be the winger but you never know with the oil.

    Lowetide,

I think they are dangling Marcinin and Yak in hopes of getting another defenceman and a AHL prospect goalie that they like.
Today we got the disturbing Yak story and it has been said that other team pro scouts have been quizzing local media about their thoughts on Marcinin.

  6. jb says:

Any good coach is going to use benchings as a motivational tool. This probably is Eakins testing Yakupovs in a way.. There’s two types of guys, the ones that’ll sulk and feel sorry for themselves after a benching, or the guy who becomes better because of it. It’s almost certain that Yak’s in the latter group.

Yakupov is a guy you trade for a franchise defenseman, so it should be able to identify him.

In his short time as an Oiler he already has looking forward to seeing his exploits every game. I miss him, come back soon, come back better.

As for this game what i will be watching for is can an Oilers goalie let in less than 3 goals? And is RNH continuing to look like the best player on the team?

Watching the 4th line get dominated by the Ovechkin line is just infuriating. Meanwhile the next shift the Caps run Hall and J.Schultz. What the hell are the face punchers doing on this team if they’re not even being a deterrent. Meanwhile they bleed chances against when they are out there and Yak sits in the press box.
Meanwhile, that’s how often now where the Oilers dominate a period but one bad turnover and it ends up in their net? The law of averages says this puck luck will even out but I think we need an average goaltender for the law to work. Neither one one of our goalers is even close to average.

Eakins and Renney aren’t that different.

I miss Krueger. At least he let the kids push the river on offense and didn’t try to make the Oilers something they ain’t.

  137. Henry says:

Chimera chops JSchultz down in the first. Won’t fight Gazdic in the second. Enforcer almost took a penalty with the gloves off, the refs let them get away with one.

Yes. This the only rational way having goons makes sense.

  146. Clarkenstein says:

14th coach in 15 years is starting to show I think. Some of these guys are so fucked up they don’t know wheather to shit or go blind. MacT renovated the house a little bit but completely forgot to buy doors for the place. Incestuous organization that continues to breed and this is what you get.

  147. VanOil says:

  148. hags9k says:

    Fire Kevin Lowe.

  149. RMGS says:

Ok, back to normal in that period!

Honestly though, bad luck and bad calls went against the team there.

Coach Eakins might lose them unless they start winning…

  150. Southern Oil says:

The problem I have is that 2 of the 4 goals (at least) should not have gone in. That’s hard for a team to overcome – bad goals and no confidence in the netminders. I don’t think they can wait this thing out – unless they want to give up on the season now (and I don’t believe MacT is that kind of guy)

  151. Lowetide says:

    Clarkenstein:

Clarkenstein wins the thread, maybe the internet.

  152. Henry says:

Will the league run out of stars then? I hope the Oilers don’t resort to dirty hockey, but chipping on the stars has to stop.

  153. Gerta Rauss says:

Well I’m not sure where we go from here. We had outplayed them for the bulk of the game and we’re down 4-1.

I’d start Dubnyk in the 3rd-he’s in a no lose situation.

  155. VanOil says:

The good news is we all thought a poor start to the season was possible because of our center depth. Arco and Acton have done there jobs well the Oilers center depth is not the reason they are losing.

    But wow are they losing.

  156. LostBoy says:

This is at least getting sort of morbidly interesting.

Given the road ahead, which is brutal for the rest of the month, there’s no reason to expect this won’t get worse before/if it gets better. Almost a matter of wondering what gives first. Like, MacTavish presumably can’t just sit and watch if it goes, say, four more games to the end of this road trip.

I guess I’d put my money on Eakins’s neck being on the block before any kind of silly-ass major trade. The Oilers can’t trade from this kind of position of weakness. A goalie seems highly likely to be shook loose from somewhere. But if this death spiral continues, Eakins is going to beat Bugsy Watson out for the shortest tenure. It seems ridiculous, but it’s basically impossible for the organization to stand and watch this season disappear in the first month.

Strange time. Somehow string a couple of wins together and it goes away. But this is stumbling into crisis awfully quick. You want to have a history with players before something like this happens.

  157. leadfarmer says:

I can see why Dubnyk wanted Labarbara to join this team. Doesn’t matter how badly he plays he still gets to keep his starting job.

  158. BlacqueJacque says:

    LostBoy,

There can’t be any more coaching changes. Letting Krueger go was already dubious. I don’t see Lowe around if another coach comes.

  159. Fixall with Rexall says:

Maybe they just let us turn the net around for the third period.

  160. RMGS says:

BlacqueJacque: There can’t be any more coaching changes.

There’s no way they fire Eakins, but the coach is going to have to bend a little. #shittyfourthline

  161. Ribs says:

Jeebus, I wish Arcobello would just move his feet. He always seems to be where he needs to be but gets caught flatfooted and can’t do anything with the puck once he gets it.

It’s so hard to know what we’re watching here. Is it too complex of systems? Do the systems just have glaring holes in them? Are the players not using them properly? It just looks like a big mess out there. They seem way too aggressive and it’s leaving wide open opportunities for the other team to take advantage of.

I’m left wondering if more conventional systems are called conventional for a reason.

I don’t think there is a chance in hell Eakins gets let go. I see them finding a cheap goalie (from the minors, Bryz, etc…) first and then a trade if they can’t make the first one work. It’s strange but I am actually really please with some of the play this team has showed. There’s one major weakness at this point but that is better than last year IMO.

  163. magisterrex says:

I don’t really disagree, but this season also can’t disappear in a puff of smoke in the first 10 or 12 games. There are only so many things you can do, and sitting watching it happen at this point probably isn’t one of them. I’m not endorsing it, really, but if this snowballs it’s about the only thing you can do. I mean, hopefully it doesn’t snowball. But Eakins has to be squeezing the marble pretty tight right now.

Ya Faceoffs has really kept Arco relevant. If Gagner can improve at least as much as Nuge has, then Arco doesn’t stick around.

I’ve stuck around through all the years of shit and this is where the team sits – I have to say, I don’t even know if LT’s site is enough to keep me interested anymore.

Other than the PP goals and bad goal, the OIl have played as about as good a road game as you can ask for. Yeah there’s been some youthful play, but other than net, they are not out-classed. Holtby has been lucky with his gaffes too.
