OILERS AT ISLANDERS, G8 13-14

Based on the latest information, we’re probably looking at Sam Gagner being back in the lineup sometime before the end of the month. The story from Joanne Ireland is here. The story for the Oilers when 89 returns: more depth.

Azorcan3

POSSIBLE LINEUP WHEN 89 RETURNS (C-L-R)

  • RNH-Hall-Eberle
  • Gagner-Perron-Hemsky
  • Gordon-Smyth-Yakupov
  • Acton-Gazdic-Arcobello
  • Smid-Petry
  • Ference-J Schultz
  • Belov-N Schultz
  • Dubnyk, LaBarbera

That’s what I’d do, of course there might be a goalie coming in (Dubnyk, Marincin and next year’s 1st? What does that get you?). I wonder how far away from the playoffs MacT will let this go. My suspicion is not far.

mc1

It’s kind of a scary moment for the fanbase, because this moment in time is both frustrating (on-ice performance) and alarming (national media saying “there isn’t anything the Edmonton Oilers aren’t at least looking at or considering”). If you’re thinking “fix the goaltending, add a top defender and a physical winger, dammit!” you might get what you’re asking for in one fell swoop!

And then it dawns on you: the price to be paid.

mc2

There are men in life who do, and those who watch. Craig MacTavish is a doer–he was as coach, and he is as a GM–and there’s very little doubt in my mind he’s going to do something to improve this team. Faced with another flushed season–even this early–I’d bet a 2-4 something gets done sooner than later. MacTavish wasn’t happy with the goaltending in the summer, wasn’t happy with the size/skill combination up front–put simply, he didn’t get Schneider and he didn’t get Clarkson.

mc3

I think we’re looking at a trade with Philly–they’re crazy, desperate and have a daredevil approach to trades. They’re also showing up as a trade partner in all kinds of places. Couturier, Coburn, Simmonds–you’re not getting one or more of those names without an outstanding young player heading the other way. There is also talk of Ryan Miller and Tomas Vanek coming to town.

I think the Oilers will get a goalie too, but it’s important to remember all the trade talk goes away with a strong performance or two. If the Oilers get a couple of wins on this road trip, we may see nothing. I think MacT must be convinced the goalie situation needs to be addressed at this point, we’ll find out a lot about the future if Dubnyk plays tonight.

MC4

If the Oilers are looking at bringing in some of these big names, some great talent is heading out of town. RW is the strongest area for the team, with defense and minor league defense being areas of strength. You’d have to think Yakupov or Eberle, Smid or Petry, Klefbom or Marincin and the 1st rd pick next summer are in play (if MacT’s talking at this level).

A strong game tonight and another on Saturday puts this talk to bed, in my opinion. However, there’s enough smoke here to believe Craig MacTavish is willing to deal some of the young cluster in an effort to rejoin the season.

Arco currently tied for league lead in assists

Would have been interesting to see eakins facial expression when that pass went back deep into the oilers zone..

If this line were to stay together all year, could Arco continue his pt/g pace?

    Wouldn’t that be something.

  4. Jon K says:

Was the 2nd goal not: Eberle takes it from a broken draw at centre, left for Arcobello who flutters a knuckler on net, then Hall puts it in from the post?

  5. russ99 says:

Funky start but they got going. I’ll take a 2-1 lead after most of the period was sloppy hockey.

Dubnyk had a quietly solid period, other than the one where he was hung out to dry.

  6. Lois Lowe says:

Marco Bello is slowly becoming an attractive asset.

    Yes.

  8. spoiler says:

Watching Arcobello play, I can’t even remember who Sam Gagner is. Great in the dot at 6-1. Leads Oiler Fs in TOI.. Followed by Eberle and then Gordon. Ference and Schultzo lead for the Dmen.

    Very solid period by Doobie.

Addendum, hall from arco and ebs on 2nd goal. Misread sorry

    Wouldn’t that be something.

When Eberle and Hall were waiting out RNH getting back from the WJHC and some shoulder rehab, they pretty much kept up the exact same scoring pace that they had with RNH.

Not saying Arcobello is RNH, but clearly something about his style of play works extremely well with the Hall/Eberle tandem.

  11. striatic says:

spoiler: Watching Arcobello play, I can’t even remember who Sam Gagner is.

Let’s hope Gagner doesn’t want to feel expendable, and the competition with Arcobello helps him.

    Lowetide:
This is a major game in the careers of Dubnyk and Yakupov. That’s how much pressure is on this organization. It’s going to blow up one way or another. I don’t remember this much October pressure since Dave Winfield

Dave Winfield strangled a guy with one hand. He also hangs out with Chewbacca:

One of the truly great men.

    Outstanding pass by Schultz!!

Ha! Hall 4-7 5×5 CF% and has 2 goals. About damn time!

How on earth did a midget like Arcobello turn into Lord of the Faceoff circle? WTF? :)

Here’s to Arcobello being the hidden gem that many Stanley Cup championship teams seem to find.

  17. Lowetide says:

    Dennis King ‏@DKingBH 1m

    I have the chances 7-9; 0-2 ST

  18. Jon K says:

    striatic,

I think it’s his ability to move the puck quickly. He’s always quick to identify the play and move the puck up ice or to an open man. It makes sense that he’d have success playing with two guys who are OK with the puck on their stick. Once Gagner is back, a certain prez might be heard to remark, “Boy, we’ve got a lot of centers”.

  19. striatic says:

    Ryan:
How on earth did a midget like Arcobello turn into Lord of the Faceoff circle?WTF?

    Low centre of gravity?

  20. spoiler says:

Ryan: How on earth did a midget like Arcobello turn into Lord of the Faceoff circle? WTF?

    Butch Goring?

Okay Butch wasn’t quite that small, but he wasn’t that big either.

  21. Zelepukin says:

    striatic: Low centre of gravity?

no he is just quick and strategically smart with his stick, where as Gordon uses a much more leverage style.

  22. fuzzy muppet says:

    Jon K,

This ability is what appears to keep Yakupov from stepping forward. He either Holds the puck too long and turns it over or rushes and flubs the play. Lord help us all when he finds the proverbial sweet spot. He will rule

  23. D says:

    spoiler: Butch Goring?

Okay Butch wasn’t quite that small, but he wasn’t that big either.

Watching the Islanders feed. They just played a Butch Goring interview after Game 4 of the 1983 Stanley Cup.

  24. doritogrande says:

Haven’t seen a lot of this season yet, but with Arco playing as well as he has, could the Oilers pull off the fabled three-headed monster?

    Hall-Arcobello-Eberle
    Perron-Nuge-Hemsky
    Joensuu-Gagner-Yakupov
    Smyth-Gordon-Acton

Gives us not only the scoring depth that would rival the Habs of the 70′s, but would provide Eakins with 5 legit Cs to trot out when a draw just needs to be won. Sub out Smyth for when it’s goon night in Calgary.

I’m a fan of keeping all those magical forwards together and instead looking to our depth of defensive prospects to make a deal for our goalie if one needs to be found. Klefbom should still have high value and could be expendable before the rest of the league figures out he’s the new Doug Lynch. With Nurse’s emergence in training camp, I think Klefbom’s best served as an asset, not as an Oiler.

Trading for an expiring contract in Miller shouldn’t cost you more than Klefbom. For that matter Miller should be seen as just that, an expiring contract. Use next off-season to address the goaltending long-term.

  25. D says:

The Islanders commentators are reporting that Taylor Hall just broke Wayne Gretzky’s record for two fastest goals in Oilers history. Is this confirmed?

  27. Lowetide says:

    D:
The Islanders commentators are reporting that Taylor Hall just broke Gretzky’s record for two fastest goals in Oilers history. Is this confirmed?

Yes. 9 seconds, Hall knocked a second off (8)

  28. Lowetide says:

Gordon is hurt. Hey, that’s great!

  29. D says:

Henry: He is now tied for the nhl lead in apples

Nice! Hope he can keep it going.

  30. spoiler says:

Gazdic will give you the sweats. Chills too.

  31. Lowetide says:

One thing I really like is those 4th liners pushing their shifts beyond the 1 minute mark. Good things baby!

  32. "Steve Smith" says:

Lynas1: Am I the only one who would consider moving Eberle before Yakupov?Laugh if you want to, but I would.

Oh, so would I, and it’s not even close. I expect (but am not certain) that Eberle would have less value, though.

I don’t think I want to trade Hall, though; he may yet amount to something.

  33. striatic says:

    Lazy play by Gazdic.

  34. spoiler says:

Way too much panic on the clearing attempts by our PKers.

  35. Dominoiler says:

Is that the ‘swarm hole’?!.. ouch..

  36. fuzzy muppet says:

CAn DD ever make that momentum changing save?

  37. rich says:

It’s a sad day when Schultz the elder has to go out on the PK. He goes down on everything.

Maybe we take the choke chain for the goalie and give it Schultz so he stops doing that.

  38. Dominoiler says:

Three clearing attempts they had, none made it out.. you said it, spoiler..

  39. Rondo says:

Yakupov has horrible body language. He seems lost

  40. spoiler says:

Doobie challenging the shooters at the top of his crease way more tonight.

  41. Lowetide says:

One thing the Oilers can help themelves with right away is the PK. Find guys who can do that and put them on the 4line. This current system is not working.

  42. "Steve Smith" says:

Honestly, if Dubnyk can just keep his save percentage above .900 for a single game, everybody will feel a lot better (especially if we also win, but that may not be required). That obviously ignores the very concept of sample size, but so does our malaise, so it cancels out.

How has he looked on the two goals? I’m on what Ben Massey used to call Rod-o-vision, back when that’s what it was.

  43. Andropod says:

    Dominoiler,

No it’s the “ice” hole :)

  44. spoiler says:

fuzzy muppet: CAn DD ever make that momentum changing save?

Were those four saves in a row good enough for you?

  45. russ99 says:

Three guys surrounding the shooter and the one D who could have done something on the ice.

    Nice job on that save.

  46. hunter1909 says:

    D:
Here’s to Arcobello being the hidden gem that many Stanley Cup championship teams seem to find.

When’s he getting traded to the Blackhawks?

  47. crude says:

The swarm is garbage – just fucking garbage. The opponent just needs to think two passes ahead and the Oilers look like a bunch of kids chasing the puck.

  48. PunjabiOil says:

    1. Dubnyk not making momentum changing saves. Sure, neither goals today were weak – but it would be nice if he made those saves. A luxury every team needs.

    2. The penalty kill is a mess. Easily allow opposition to gain zone and allow quality chances.

  49. Lynas1 says:

The oilers site says the shots are 23-8 NYI! Jesus!

  50. kooler says:

the Isle PP hit the same spot as Pitt did the other day for their goal….there is a pattern that’s not working out.

  51. FPB94 says:

hunter1909: When’s he getting traded to the Blackhawks?

When do we run him out of town because he’s not a tough 6”’2 guy?

  52. "Steve Smith" says:

Andrew Ference 100% on the dot tonight (and, I presume without checking, on the season). Good to see; somebody make him captain.

(Will Acton has apparently yet to take a faceoff.)

  53. Lowetide says:

    "Steve Smith":
Honestly, if Dubnyk can just keep his save percentage above .900 for a single game, everybody will feel a lot better (especially if we also win, but that may not be required). That obviously ignores the very concept of sample size, but so does out malaise, so it cancels out.

How has he looked on the two goals?I’m on what Ben Massey used to call Rod-o-vision, back when that’s what it was.

This is a great point. To my eye, the first goal wasn’t his fault and the second one was high slot and I wouldn’t fault him either. I have learned Oiler fans are pretty harsh judges of late though.

  54. Henry says:

Put yak on the pp to start

  55. Lucinius says:

Neither goal against is on Dubnyk. First one was on the forwards not coming back, second was just a poor pk system and failed clearing attempts.

Dubnyk has made a bunch of good saves. Just needs the team to play better in front of him and continue his play.

  56. striatic says:

Lowetide: Find guys who can do that and put them on the 4line.

    Lennart Petrell?

  57. russ99 says:

I’m sure that swarm works better 5 on 5 ( at least when we’re not committing all 5 players to chase the puck carrier) but the collapsing box on the PK isn’t working at all.

  58. VanOil says:

A PP goal would be nice, Some PP shots would sufice

  59. Andropod says:

In the circumstances I would prefer if DD stayed around his net.

  60. Jon K says:

    "Steve Smith":
Honestly, if Dubnyk can just keep his save percentage above .900 for a single game, everybody will feel a lot better (especially if we also win, but that may not be required). That obviously ignores the very concept of sample size, but so does out malaise, so it cancels out.

How has he looked on the two goals?I’m on what Ben Massey used to call Rod-o-vision, back when that’s what it was.

Dubnyk didn’t have much chance on either. The first was from within ten feet, from the forgotten third forward streaking in for a good chance. The second was a tic-tac-toe play on the power play where the forward shot from the middle of the slot off a perfect pass from behind the net.

  61. striatic says:

Nice to see Yakupov out on the first unit.

Hope he gets some shots, some confidence.

  62. spoiler says:

Schultzy won’t get too many better looks than that one.

  63. "Steve Smith" says:

Also, I’m pretty sure that I once cited Arcobello as an example of the Oilers filling up their reserve list for no good reason. So, uh, my bad.

  64. ASkoreyko says:

We won that Perron trade hands down. Man what a nice addition to the Oilers.

  65. striatic says:

Islanders broadcasters mentioning the Yakupov to Buffalo rumours. Word gets around, I guess.

  66. spoiler says:

Hall seems to be the puck carrier to enter the zone on the PP a lot lately, but not with good results. I’d rather see a playmaker in that role. Hall’s best asset is speed which is somewhat negated on the PP.

  67. Melman says:

now would be a good time for MacT to throw a bucket of cold water on the Yak rumours

  68. hunter1909 says:

    Oilers need 1972 Phil Esposito.

Bobby Orr 1971 could also work.

    And 1972 Wayne Cashman.

  69. striatic says:

    Perron. Jesus.

  70. fuzzy muppet says:

    yikes Gazdic is bad.

  71. crude says:

Why does the L wing hang so high on the PP, almost at the blue-line? I noticed it last game too. It’s a totally non threatening position.

  72. Old School G says:

If we win with Dubby tonight we’re still looking for a goaltender right?

I’ve always gone to bat for Dubby but am thinking more and more that working a tandem in net is the way to go. Goalies will always be all over the map working a tandem just betters your odds of getting quality goaltending each night.

  73. "Steve Smith" says:

    hunter1909:
    Oilers need 1972 Phil Esposito.

As the inimitable Sean McIndoe commented in this article (the entirety of which is, like pretty well everything he writes, worth reading):

“[Grant Fuhr is] probably the Edmonton Oilers’ best goaltender. I don’t mean of all time, I mean right now.”

(Only after posting that do I notice that you said Phil, and not Tony, which means that my comment has nothing to do with yours. Whatever – I’m standing by it.)

  74. striatic says:

Gazdic not doing himself any favours tonight.

    Lazy penalty. Lazy offside.

  75. striatic says:

Old School G: If we win with Dubby tonight we’re still looking for a goaltender right?

    Right.

  76. fuzzy muppet says:

Special teams need to come through here.

  77. Lucinius says:

Need our powerplay to score at least one goal tonight. Something that shouldn’t be in doubt with all the skill we got.

  78. spoiler says:

Melman: now would be a good time for MacT to throw a bucket of cold water on the Yak rumours

I don’t think there’s any need to quell rumours that came out of NIck “Hey I have my Grade 5″ Kypreos’ head.

  79. SK Oiler Fan says:

Fk these guys are good at pissing away PPs. Passing around the perimeter will do that. Then when they finally get a long distance wrister away there’s not enough traffic and not enough players around the net to retrieve pucks. Here comes another one. I miss Souray on the PP

  80. striatic says:

Islanders couldn’t be making this any easier for the Oilers.

  81. D says:

hunter1909: When’s he getting traded to the Blackhawks?

Right after Yak goes to Buffalo for a bag of pucks :(

  82. hunter1909 says:

    Hamonic flattened Hall in juniors.

  83. gr8one says:

Perron is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

Apparently the “A” in Arcobello stands for assist…man he’s been snake bitten for goals, as ecstatic as I am with his game thus far, man it would be nice if he could bury some of those chances.

He could easily have 2-4 goals this season to go with those apples.

As far as Dubnyk goes, FOR NOW, as long as he stops letting in the soft ones I’m ok with him not making the “momentum changers” as long as they are of the difficult variety of the two he’s let in tonight. He’s Sitting at 0.917% right now, if he maintains that I like our chances of winning this game. If he maintains that for the duration of the season I think it’s safe to say we win more than we lose.

  84. Lynas1 says:

Listening in CHEd, sounds like yak is getting some good looks.

  85. Andropod says:

Lucinius: Need our powerplay to score at least one goal tonight. Something that shouldn’t be in doubt with all the skill we got.

Krueger’s still on the payroll, right? Bring him back as PP coach :)

  86. spoiler says:

fuzzy muppet: yikes Gazdic is bad.

Wait till you’ve had it for a month or two.

  87. Henry says:

Funny how everyone seems to have chemistry with eberle.

  88. spoiler says:

The ice is just shit in this shack of an arena.

  89. striatic says:

    Nabokov’s been pretty good, unfortunately.

This isn’t all on the Oil PP.

  90. hags9k says:

Hall looked pissed at Yak there after the Hamonic exchange…

  91. hunter1909 says:

    Nice goal.

  92. fuzzy muppet says:

How many fucking times do they just let guys skate right to the slot?

    This team is infuriating

  93. spoiler says:

Andropod: Krueger’s still on the payroll, right? Bring him back as PP coach

Didn’t Kruger try the 1-2-2 PP too at the start of last season and then ended up abandoning it?

  94. bookje says:

    That’s not Dubnyk’s fault.

  95. Jon K says:

Contrast Perron and Yakupov on that last long shift. Ugh.

  96. Lowetide says:

Can’t fault Dubnyk on that one either. I’d give Tavares miles of credit, though. Wonderful player.

  97. gr8one says:

    Or not. FFS.

  98. hunter1909 says:

I like how they want to give Dubnyk confidence booster games, despite the fact it’s patently obvious he’s forgotten how to play goal.

  99. Ripoux says:

    1-0 Greyhounds over Barrie.

    Nurse assist, +1

  100. VanOil says:

If Arcobello had been given a chance last year to play with Hall and Eberle during the great center shortage of 2013 part 1 would we have made the playoffs?

  101. Dominoiler says:

So,.. Swarm hole opens as the defender skates away from the action (presumably to get ‘into’ position) so that Tvares is wide open in the slot.. that was effective..

  102. bookje says:

    Bad penalty by Shultz there.

  103. gr8one says:

    Lowetide:
Can’t fault Dubnyk on that one either. I’d give Tavares miles of credit, though. Wonderful player.

I dunno…he was down way too early, a goalie who’s 6’5 shouldn’t get beaten over the shoulder from that close.

  104. russ99 says:

Ugh. You can’t leave Tavares alone like that. Did they not just defend better vs. Crosby and Malkin?

  105. "Steve Smith" says:

I hear that goals with roughly a minute left in the period are killers; we might need a fight to turn this around. Who the hell benched Mike Brown?

  106. hunter1909 says:

    VanOil:
If Arcobello had been given a chance last year to play with Hall and Eberle during the great center shortage of 2013 part 1 would we have made the playoffs?

Why not make it the Stanley Cup, since we’re being ridiculous?

  107. striatic says:

    Well that was unnecessary.

  108. SK Oiler Fan says:

Well that’s the dumb play of the night. 3 fin seconds left in the period on a harmless islander in the corner. dumb. That’s how bad teams lose.

  109. Dominoiler says:

seriously, you can see the weak side defender turn his back to Tvares n skate away (into a position to do nothing but watch him score)..

  110. spoiler says:

gr8one: I dunno…he was down way too early, a goalie who’s 6’5 shouldn’t get beaten over the shoulder from that close.

Tavares had time to book a trip before he picked his spot. Wouldna mattered.

  111. hunter1909 says:

    VanOil,

    How’s Vancouver taking to Tortorella?

  112. gr8one says:

    spoiler,

I was going to correct you that it was actually Barclay’s center they were in but luckily I looked before giving my own foot oral.

Which brings me to the question, I could have swore they were moving to Brooklyn this season?

  113. russ99 says:

That good news is the Isles choked in the third their last few games, so it can happen again.

  114. hags9k says:

Wow it’s so early in the season but we are in serious trouble right now. So much frustration is bubbling under the surface. The boys need to really dig down in this 3rd period and find a way. I’m calling Hemsky and Yakupov.

    GOILERS

  115. crude says:

    Eakins has lost me.

  116. VanOil says:

    hunter1909,

He split up the Sedins which is as crazy as taking away the donuts from Terry Jones but he is winning for now.

  117. russ99 says:

    crude,

I see adjustments on offense, but not on defense. And it’s badly needed.

  118. striatic says:

Call me crazy, but I think the Oilers can win this one if they can kill the penalty to start the 3rd.

Certainly outplayed the Islanders last period. Forced a couple of those PPs after sustained pressure.

  119. striatic says:

gr8one: Which brings me to the question, I could have swore they were moving to Brooklyn this season?

No. They played a game there earlier this season though.

  120. spoiler says:

Ebs and Arco still leading TOI for forwards. Ference and N. Schultz for the Dmen. Nultz has had a pretty good game by my eye, lots of battle. Arco 9-3 on FOs. Shots and attempts are 40-35 in NYI’s favour, although I am not trusting the shot counter in this barn as there has been some strange discrepancies.

  121. leadfarmer says:

So what do you do when your goalie has his confidence shattered. Leave the slot nice and open. That will get his confidence up quickly. Still think this team needs better defense before addressing the goalie situation unless you think Ryan Milller will play defense better than N. Schultz

spoiler: Tavares had time to book a trip before he picked his spot. Wouldna mattered.

I agree to a point…Tavares had all kinds of time to pick a spot and he’s an elite player, but the spot he scored in should not have been open for a goalie of Dubnyk’s stature with fundamentally sound positioning. Sometimes NHL goalies have to make NHL calibre saves…and I’m not saying that was a weak goal due to the time JT had, but it certainly wasn’t of the “the goalie had no chance variety either”

  124. Romulus Apotheosis says:

We are getting grossly outplayed here. It looked briefly like we might be able to ride puck luck for the first time of the season, but hey percentages win most of the time and luck hates us.

The special teams are really troubling. The PK gives up the zone very easily and then seems to passively challenge the puck; the PP is still trying to pass the puck into the net… jesus christ, it makes you want to join the rabble and yell “shoot!”… the Isles are shooting every chance they get and relying on their forecheck to retrieve and get 2nd and 3rd attempts. A great example of what a puck possession team needs to do. We are looking for the goal right away… doesn’t work like that…

    Agreed.

  145. russ99 says:

    Nice save, Dubey.

Man, the swarm of desperation leaves vast swaths of open ice way too close to the net..

  146. HugThePost says:

There isn’t much difference between following this oiler team versus any other one from the last 20 years. They do just enough to lose. Different players, different coaches, different broadcast crews. But deep down inside you know winning is just too much for them.

  147. G Money says:

Can we please bring back Krueger to coach the special teams?

That Will Acton sequence was a perfect reflection the Oilers so far this season. Clear possession. Waiting patiently to waste time on the PK. As soon as the pressure arrives, a simple dump down the ice and its another 30s killed. Instead – muffs the shot straight to the Isles, who get possession with the Oilers out of position, and now you get 30s of PP pressure with four good chances.

I would say send the stupid f*ck to the AHL, but its just another one of a bunch of similar D zone f*ckups.

  148. fuzzy muppet says:

  151. russ99 says:

Man, the swarm of desperation leaves vast swaths of open ice way too close to the net..

    Shya, you could say that.
Everyone’s freaking over Dubnyk being shaky – perhaps that’s the symptom, not the malady? He has dropped what? 91% in his save percentage? Lebarbera not so hot either? Maybe it’s the system that is yet to provide a regulation win.

Perhaps Yak’s odd quotes of not wanting to “forecheck/skate/hit all the time” were less about those aspects of the game in general than they were about the way Eakins wants them done. It’s kind of ridiculous that he should say that.

I think we’re at the point where the proof has met the pudding.

Things should improve as the team becomes more comfortable with the swarm system, noted, but can they get worse? (knock wood).

I just hope they don’t jettison Duby and trade away a young gun because they don’t want to admit their third coach in 10 minutes was a hasty, perhaps bunk move.

  195. gr8one says:

I’d say in one way the Oilers being on the road right now is a godsend. The last thing Dubie needs right now are boos and/or the Rexall faithful sarcastically cheering his saves. Which we know would be happening, deserved or not.

  196. BlacqueJacque says:

You know, if we could sucker some team into trading a goalie for Schultzy, I feel ad if it would be a double win.

  198. Gret99zky says:
