OILERS AT MAPLE LEAFS, G5 13-14

Saturdays as a kid meant watching the HNIC at my Grandpa’s house. My Dad would be there, along with warm beer (Grandpa liked his beer room temp) and the room was filled with light from one strong bulb that spread shadows and created weird images on those plaster walls that featured rough surfaces no one under 30 would remember. The Leafs would usually roar ahead and as the third period rolled along the adults would begin the prep for cards while I would start thinking of ways to stay up (it was an epic fail, 60s parents were kind of communisits–speak when spoken to, it’s bedtime because I said so–that kind of thing).

The Toronto of my youth was the one in my imagination–the words and drawings in the ‘Art Linkletter Encyclopedia‘ and the hockey Leafs. Big Frank Mahovlich was a powerhouse, you could hear the fans rise as the Big M wound up and passed center on his way into the offensive zone. My  favorite player was Dave Keon, he was kind of, well, perfect.

That video shows some nice footage of Keon, George Armstrong and Jacques Plante, along with young defensive tomfoolery from Jim McKenny. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been compared to a lot of great players (Datsyuk!!!!) but the first player of this type I remember was Keon. A wonderful penalty-killer and defensive center, Keon’s footspeed was insane and his anticipation the same. RHN is taller, I suspect he’s a better offensive player (Keon was no slouch) but they are similar in their approach to the game: both skated miles and miles in the name of upsetting timing.

Cherish this one, gents. When he’s gone, we’ll miss him.

JASON SMITH

The Oilers have had some good fortune when looking to Toronto for defensive help. They acquired Jason Smith from the Leafs in 1999 for a 2nd and a 4th, and they acquired the draft pick that would be Steve Smith for a fringe winger (Reg Thomas) right after the 1979 expansion draft. With Jake Gardiner apparently available, I wonder if the Oilers might attempt to pick him up and pair him with Justin Schultz–that would be a lot of chaos but it worked in college.

LIE BACK AND THINK OF ENGELLAND

Seems like half of the EJ has writers are mentioning his name, and the other half are too. I’m not absolutely certain the Oilers need a depth defenseman, although they haven’t replaced Theo Peckham/Mark Fistric and maybe that’s their 7th D when everything gets sussed out. I’m not used to cheering for a team with more than 7 blueline options, so this plethora stuff is new to me. I would guess the depth chart right now looks like:

  1. Justin Schultz
  2. Jeff Petry
  3. Andrew Ference
  4. Ladislav Smid
  5. Anton Belov
  6. Nick  Schultz
  7. Phil Larsen
  8. Denis Grebeshkov
  9. Corey Potter
  10. Brandon Davidson
  11. Martin Marincin
  12. Taylor Fedun
  13. Oscar Klefbom
  14. Brad Hunt
  15. Martin Gernat
  16. David Musil

There’s like 14 guys on this list who are possible NHL defenders at some point this season, that’s way more depth than we’ve seen in the past. I’m not sure how many of these kids will be quality, but there’s no rush to bring any of them up at this point.

bay leaf

Pierre Lebrun has an article up quoting an NHL exec saying that aside from Jordan Eberle and Sam Gagner “he thought the team’s young forwards aren’t fully committed to becoming complete players. They’re not paying the price to play a 200-foot game. He said that’s especially noticeable on a team where the blue line, aside from Justin Schultz — whom he refers to as a “stud” — has “neither depth nor dimension.”

I’m calling bullshit across the board. NO MENTION of Taylor Hall’s ability to push the river, no mention of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as an emerging two-way talent, and the two guys the exec mentioned would NOT be exceptions in this area (and I love both guys as hockey players). The blueline has better depth and dimension, and not to be an asshole but Justin Schultz is putting the k in chaos pretty much every damn shift.

So that executive is doing what NHL execs apparently do routinely–turning to page 11 in the “what to say when media asks” of the TIRED OLD HOCKEY MEN handbook and having a lash. These kids aren’t perfect, God knows that’s true, but when you’re asking Taylor Hall (as a for instance) to move to center and take instruction from his THIRD HEAD COACH IN FOUR YEARS there might just be a period of adjustment there. If you’re saying “there seems to be some confusion here, Orly” I’m with you. But to call out young players who’ve been through this gong show for lack of commitment? Go to hell.

I’ll post the lineups when they appear, might be some juggling. I’d give $ to see a victory tonight, it would be a very nice end to a couple of difficult weeks to be an Oiler fan.

Dubnyk guess wrong for the second time tonight.. and its two goals against that shouldn’t be.

  7. BlacqueJacque says:

Labarbera could become a starter if he plays well.

I have defended him nonstop at work and I am done now.

MacT better be working the horn.

    and no..not for 64.

  9. hunter1909 says:

Leafs making like a blue-shift Central Red Army

  10. Lucinius says:

Does look like MacT was more than correct to try and find a new #1 goalie, though. He failed to, but Dubnyk looks horrible to start the year. He’s had one average game and three bad games.

  11. sliderule says:

    Duby has broken my heart.

    Good night

  12. Lucinius says:

I should also, however, temper the above with.. well, Lundqvist.

    Goalies be weird.

  13. hunter1909 says:

Lowe stubbornly defends Dubnyk at every chance, and now everyone in the company including Katz afraid to mention anything about it.

  14. Suntory Hanzo says:

How much pressure on DD knowing that he has possibly given away a good 10 million in contract dollars.

  15. spoiler says:

    Healy can lick my nuts

  17. spoiler says:

Ebs with a beauty play there

  18. Lowetide says:

    Smyth (Arco, Eberle)

  19. magisterrex says:

    Arcobello better stay up.

  20. jp says:

Arco and that Smytty guy might just stick with the team…

  21. hunter1909 says:

Oilers need to give Dubnyk that soap bar in towels beating from ‘Full Metal Jacket’.

  22. Racki says:

Wow, 3 goals in 2 games.. silencing his critics.. atta be Smytty!

  23. Suntory Hanzo says:

Shouldn’t Arco be given the nod to buy a house?

  24. Andropod says:

We need a goalie that steals games for the team. We seem to have a team that has to score extra goals to make up for the goalie.

  25. crude says:

I missed that sort of Eberle.
    Eberle’n pipe!

  26. BlacqueJacque says:

Smyth might as well be a pylon that the Oilers bank shots off of at this point. But damn, he’s one hell of a pylon.

  27. LMHF#1 says:

Arcobello has certainly been better at speed in this game. Isn’t taking weak shots or getting knocked off the puck near as much. He should stay at 4C, but Eakins’ buddy Acton is apparently getting that job because our 4 line must be devoid of skill.

Could MacTavish simply trade away Brown, Acton and Gazdic so that Eakins has no choice? He wouldn’t of course, but if that’s the battle the GM holds the upper hand.

  28. Lucinius says:

Both of these teams are offensive zone teams.

  29. LMHF#1 says:

    BlacqueJacque:
Smyth might as well be a pylon that the Oilers bank shots off of at this point. But damn, he’s one hell of a pylon.

And the HNIC guys obsess over the stick that made it so he barely got the puck in the net, and has seriously limited his game in the past few years as he’s lost touch and become worn down. Hilarious.

  30. gr8one says:

    magisterrex:
    Arcobello better stay up.

I’m thinking the same thing…when Gags is healthy we might actually have a nice problem to have and something resembling C depth!

  31. Lucinius says:

    LMHF#1,

I can see Gadzic sticking around. I can see Acton sticking around as the 13th forward once Gagner comes back.

  32. danny says:

EDM needs to put their next two #1 overalls in play and get a legit starting goaltender. I think that is the difference between being a playoff team or not right now. Everything else is coming together.

  33. spoiler says:

Phaneuf is taking it easy on his future teammates tonight.

  34. Lucinius says:

That behind the net pass pisses me off so much. Petry handcuffs Smid because Smid has to do a 360 just to get the puck.

Which means by the time Smid can try and get the puck out he’s got a guy right on him.

One of the many problems with our defensive zone play.

  35. magisterrex says:

    CBC feed down?

  36. hunter1909 says:

Yakupov’s going to be so pissed.

  37. spoiler says:

Arcobello can replace either 4th line winger, and we can actually have 5 centres playing in a game with Hall able to take FOs too.

  38. BlacqueJacque says:

LMHF#1: And the HNIC guys obsess over the stick that made it so he barely got the puck in the net, and has seriously limited his game in the past few years as he’s lost touch and become worn down. Hilarious.

That stick is the key to his game. Guys can slash at it and never break it, he can whack away at the puck by the net and really lay into guys with crosschecks without worrying about its integrity.

  39. danny says:

#1 picks… not overalls. Overalls are so 1985.

  40. hunter1909 says:

    magisterrex: CBC feed down?

I’m still getting the vanilla drivel.

  41. Lucinius says:

    BlacqueJacque,

Very much so. Personally I think all sticks should be wood. None of this composite stuff.

  42. spoiler says:

Simmer, I will give you ten bucks right now if you punch that little prick of a former goalie as hard as you can in the face.

  43. Lucinius says:

Could almost see Joensuu going; “THIS is what a big man is!”

  44. VanOil says:

    I chip in another 10

  45. crude says:

I like Jesse planting Dion there. A lot.

  46. Lucinius says:

    Robbery. ROBBERY!

  47. Racki says:

Mark Arcobello has a cute little muffin shot. PUT SOME MUSCLE BEHIND IT.

  48. hunter1909 says:

‘Don’t you know who I am?’ Phaneuf

  49. LMHF#1 says:

And Arcobello lets me down again. Dammit.

  50. spoiler says:

    I WANT THE SMYTHTRICK!

  51. Racki says:

I think Arco is a smart player, but his shot makes Smytty’s look like Zdeno Chara’s.

  52. Lucinius says:

This game should be 9-6, really.

  53. 719 says:

If it is going to take 5 goals to win a night, we could be in serious trouble.

  54. Andropod says:

    spoiler:
    I WANT THE SMYTHTRICK!

    Smytty does too.

  55. Racki says:

This is the Oilers team I wanted to see in other games.. much harder on the forecheck.. more sustained pressure. Just wasn’t seeing that in other games.Of course, defensively they are still a nightmare.

  56. gr8one says:

I’ve been a Dubnyk supporter through and through but if we’re having the conversation of acquiring a goalie I think I’d take a hard look at signing Bryzgalov.

I know he’s a flake but so what, lots of goalies are, he’d come cheap, without giving up assets and boy will he have “something to prove” chip on his shoulder.

My keeper league team would love it too.

  57. 719 says:

Phaneuf practicing to be an Oiler? Just tried a 1 on 4.

    F–k your keeper team! :P

I was opposed to Bryzy.. but I dunno… once a goalie loses confidence, it’s damn hard to get it back. This is why every teammate knows you coddle the f— out of your goalies. “Hey man, you almost had that one there.. good try… you’re doing great buddy… I know you won’t let that 11th one in!”

  59. LMHF#1 says:

Does Dubnyk feel like stopping anything at all? This is damn pathetic.

  60. spoiler says:

    They will trade Dubnyk’s ass.

  61. Lucinius says:

    Fuck it.

    YOU FREEZE THAT PUCK.

    God damn it.

Dubnyk cannot make the right decision. You have to freeze it. Have to.

  62. crude says:

    You just knew it.

  63. Lowetide says:

Well this game is the end of Dubnyk. You cannot give up that goal. I don’t think MacT handled the summer well (Schneider, etc) but that goal cannot go in. Lordy.

  64. hunter1909 says:

Dubnyk’s an AHL goalie with the new sized equipment.

  65. 719 says:

Wow, bad goal and horrible decision not to freeze it.

  66. D says:

    Anyone surprised by this?

  67. spoiler says:

spoiler: They will trade Dubnyk’s ass.

What I mean is that he is done with this team, whether by trade or not.

  68. crude says:

Ok, I am done on Dubnyk too. Small sample size or no.

  69. Pablo Aimar says:

A trade for a goalie is probably imminent.

  70. russ99 says:

Unbelievable. This team cannot hold a lead.

No excuse for that. Maybe go with LaBarbera and Bachman and send Dubnyk down to figure it out?

    Lowetide:
Well this game is the end of Dubnyk. You cannot give up that goal. I don’t think MacT handled the summer well (Schneider, etc) but that goal cannot go in. Lordy.

You wanted to give up Nurse, Marincin and whoever for Schneider?

He was close on Bishop. That would have made all the diff in the world.

I honestly have tried to support Dubnyk, but I predict that Bryzgalov is an Oiler before we’re eating Turkey tomorrow.

  72. Lowetide says:

Dubnyk’s Edmonton career ended tonight. I’m pretty sure that’s true.

  73. Andropod says:

I’m pretty sure that the players are done with Dubs as well. Just. Not. Good. Enough.

  74. gr8one says:

    Just effing brutal.

    Racki–> ,,|,,

  75. Lucinius says:

Honestly, some of the defensive zone chaos makes sense if the team in front of him is scared shitless he can’t be counted on to make the save. Makes the players in front of him frantic and prone to turn overs.

  76. hunter1909 says:

    Not a playoff team.

  77. jake70 says:

That shot of Lowe and MacT was priceless.

No, I never wanted to give up the first rounder. But it might cost Yakupov now.

Unbelievable. This team cannot hold a lead.

The skaters can. The goalie can’t. Missed cover. Muffin through the legs. That stupid missed wraparound that should have gone wide. Kadri because he was kneeling. Terrible.

  83. 106 and 106 says:

Wow. 1st watch of the season – not a playoff team, but gosh-darn exciting team. Great OT to come!

  84. danny says:

Overtime picks… I got Nuge and Nuge

  85. Pablo Aimar says:

    Lowetide,

That is the really scary aspect of it. They might do something really stupid now. I hope its just Bryzgalov.

  86. Racki says:

Lowetide: No, I never wanted to give up the first rounder. But it might cost Yakupov now.

Can’t have it both was thoguh. Goalie market wasn’t great. Would have been damn hard to get someone. I kmnow he was in on a few. Didn’t work out. My bet is if Bryzy can handle the “minus thirties two” weather here, he’ll get signed.

  87. Suntory Hanzo says:

    Is Deslaurier available?

  88. hunter1909 says:

    You can’t blame Horcoff anymore.

  89. LMHF#1 says:

Why are coaches so tentative about pulling goalies? You know when a guy is on and when he isn’t. You can see how steady he is whether he’s making saves or not. They second guess themselves way too much. Got to switch out more often.

Eberle would have a hat trick minimum tonight on Dubnyk. He’s hit the Kadri spot multiple times.

  90. "Steve Smith" says:

    hunter1909,

    That was you.

  91. LMHF#1 says:

    Nice knowing you Devan.

  92. Lucinius says:

    How is that not called?

    To hell with it.

We deserved to lose anyways because of Dubnyk.

  93. spoiler says:

Apologies for the choice of words but, Jesus H Fucking Christ

  94. crude says:

    Farewell Devon.

  95. russ99 says:

Brutal loss. Something has to be done, we can’t go through 82 games of this.

  96. hunter1909 says:

    A laughingstock of a team.

    Again.

  97. Lowetide says:

That should have been a penalty on the Nuge play there. Oh well. Dubnyk is done now, I don’t think anyone in the organization can save him now. 6-5 final.

    1-3-1.

    Lordy.

  98. Suntory Hanzo says:

Man. Imagine what Dubnyk can’t buy for that 10+ million he just left on the table

  99. Andropod says:

    phhhhhhh

  100. 719 says:

That was disappointing. It wasn’t disappointing because the Oilers’ didn’t play hard (like in Vancouver), but because the Oilers deserved to win that one.

Honestly the Oil could be 3-2, instead of 1-4,

  101. Lowetide says:

    hunter1909:
    You can’t blame Horcoff anymore.

You’re the one who did that, Hunter. I’m calling you out on that one.

  102. Suntory Hanzo says:

    spoiler:

    This.

  103. Scotty LaDouche says:

Was he targeting Nuges shoulder with that punch??? Scum

  104. 106 and 106 says:

“Had it – lose it” -Ron McLean.

    That’s not grammar, Ron… Sigh.

  105. hunter1909 says:

Lowetide: You’re the one who did that, Hunter. I’m calling you out on that one.

    LOL

  106. hunter1909 says:

The only way to enjoy this team is to cheer for them losing.

  107. jake70 says:

The last minute goal against is like a weeds growing in your lawn, never go away.

  108. LMHF#1 says:

Not only did he kick the rebound straight to the Leafs forward – he moved the pad that would’ve stopped the puck out of the way. He was in position and moved out of it…

It isn’t that goal that ticks me off – a 3-on-1 should end in a goal – but that on top of all the rest is just embarrassing.

  109. Lucinius says:

Heh, just got a call from my mother. My dad apparently put his shoe through the t.v.; and he’s never thrown something in the house — ever. Not even when we were kids and drove them insane.

  110. Racki says:

    Lucinius:
Heh, just got a call from my mother. My dad apparently put his shoe through the t.v.; and he’s never thrown something in the house — ever. Not even when we were kids and drove them insane.

Hahaha that’s awesome. This team can frustrate you as much as they can entertain

  111. 106 and 106 says:

    At least Boyd looks good….

    anyone?

    anyone?

  112. spoiler says:

Jultz made a real bad decision on that OT winner.

  113. russ99 says:

So, if we bury Dubnyk in the AHL, we’d be on the hook for only $1.75M. Do we have enough cap room on top of that to land Bryzgalov?

  114. Lynas1 says:

Ok. I’ve been a big supporter of Dubnyk over the last few years, but he’s been Vesa Toskala bad. At this point I’d be just fine with trading Eberle for a goalie that can buy a friggin save! This is an absolute farce. Maybe we should get some of the $3.5 million to build a brick wall across our net. Maybe then we’d have a chance to get an opportune save. Ridiculous. This one’s ALL on Dubnyk.

  115. 106 and 106 says:

    Lucinius,

Must have been an ancient TV….

Or a really hard shoe, I guess.

But who wears those in the house?

  116. jake70 says:

    Lucinius:
Heh, just got a call from my mother. My dad apparently put his shoe through the t.v.; and he’s never thrown something in the house — ever. Not even when we were kids and drove them insane.

That’s fantastic….lol…I am having another beer, toasting your dad with the first drink.

  117. fifthcartel says:

Please don’t let a terrible non-call lead to some shitty ‘bold’ move. Just awful.

  118. gr8one says:

So five games in, with even just average goaltending this team probably has AT LEAST 3 extra points this season, Fair?

That could easily be the difference between golfing and the playoffs…I never saw this coming, I firmly believed Dubnyk would at least be league average, but good lawd this cannot continue.

  119. 106 and 106 says:

    Lowetide,

Yeah, but like you said, that trade isn’t probably isn’t till the deadline, right…. No one trades early season…. unless it’s a “bold” trade…

  120. Bank Shot says:

Can’t give up a 3 on 1 in OT. It should never have gotten there though. This team needs a goalie badly. That wasn’t a penalty either. Hopkins was just weak on the puck. Don’t dipsy doodle at the blueline.

Nurse, Maricin, and something for Schneider? Should have pulled the trigger. A career .927% save percentage probably means 30-40 less goals allowed per season compared to what we have now. Nurse probably won’t be that big of a difference maker for 4-5 years if ever. Oh well.

    Screw you Oilers.

  121. Dead Cat Bounce says:

    106 and 106:
    Lucinius,

Ranford needs to come in and tell people to stand up.

  123. Ice Sage says:

    Enter Bachmann

  124. Fixall with Rexall says:

Devan jumped the shark tonight. I hope this doesn’t cost one of the kids. Bryz for the save. Lets try that first.

  125. Lucinius says:

    106 and 106,

He takes them off after he sits down. Was an four year old t.v. that now needs replacing because of Dubnyk. Apparently my dad went to destroy the deck he’s rebuilding to relieve stress afterwards.

  126. bookje says:

I think you are over-reacting – Dubnyk is having problems, but the organization is not going to give up on him because of 4 bad games. Play LaBarbara for the next 3 games while Dubnyk works on whatever is bothering him and then give him another game.

There is some additional blame to go around – J.Shultz literally took off towards the Leafs net when the Leafs got the puck and were skating it out of the zone . If you have it recorded, watch it on again, its stunning. I would sit him for a game.

With that said, I am not defending Dubnyk’s play this year. He has been terrible, but I don’t know that he is a discard quite yet.

  127. Numenius says:

That last goal was also on JSchultz. He jumped up when there was no safety. But yeah, I think Dubnyk is done.

  128. spoiler says:

Bank Shot: Can’t give up a 3 on 1 in OT.

For some reason, while RNH was skating back to the blue line while getting mithered by Franson, Jultz pinched, leaving Belov stranded.

  129. gogliano says:

Dubnyk currently last in the league for SVP% of goalies who have played 3 games or more.

  130. Pablo Aimar says:

    bookje,

The gm was ready to discard him last year. Somebody else will be playing goal for the oilers on Monday. I hope nothing stupid is done.

  131. Ice Sage says:

    fifthcartel:
Please don’t let a terrible non-call lead to some shitty ‘bold’ move. Just awful.

That wasn’t what lost the game. Dubnyk was terrible, yet again. His professionalism and athleticicsm is in question here – he simply hasn’t adapted to the “minor” changes in equipment.

Note how Bolland aimed for the 5-hole (when there was room high blocker side) on the winner. The book is out on DD – slow, lazy, passive, porous

If Yakupov can be sat, so can DD.

This team will play better for LaBarbera and Bachman. Anyone who’s played will tell you that a goalie who gives a sh!t makes the team better.

    this was another point squandered.

    bookje,

No he’s done. He might return to form at some point in his career but it won’t be with us. This was a career defining game possibly. I think we rip the bandaid off as quick as possible.

  133. wheatnoil says:

Lots of options before trading one of the kids.

Start Labarbera, see if he catches fire. Then try Dubnyk again. They both fail? Try Bachman. He’s actually not a bad choice. There’s also Bryz who’s available for nothing but money.

Dubnyk has been terrible. No doubt about that. Maybe needs time to adjust to the new equipment? Been eating bad cheeseburgers? An ex-lover cast a hex on him? I don’t know. However, before we all go half-cocked and trade away the parts of this team that are working, how about we try some other options first.

  134. 106 and 106 says:

    Schucks.

I think you are over-reacting – Dubnyk is having problems, but the organization is not going to give up on him because of 4 bad games.Play LaBarbara for the next 3 games while Dubnyk works on whatever is bothering him and then give him another game.

There is some additional blame to go around – J.Shultz literally took off towards the Leafs net when the Leafs got the puck and were skating it out of the zone .If you have it recorded, watch it on again, its stunning.I would sit him for a game.

With that said, I am not defending Dubnyk’s play this year.He has been terrible, but I don’t know that he is a discard quite yet.

I’m not discarding Dubnyk, but I believe when a goalie is in that no-confidence zone, it’s near impossible to get them out. And Labarbera is even worse, if you ask me. Right now they’re stuck with 2 incapable goaltenders. I honestly would give Bryzgalov a go, and it pains me to say it because i think he’s a head case…. but desperate times call for desperate measures. They can’t afford to wait and see if Doobie can battle out of this. This is the point of the season where you’d normally put in Khabi.. let him win some fans back for a bit while the pressure comes off Dubnyk…but we don’t have him here anymore, of course.

What I’m suggesting is Labarbera to OKC, Bryzy starts, Dubnyk backs up.

I don’t know if it’s the equipment (vis Friedman). I don’t know if it’s the confidence (vis Schneider).

But this can’t continue. There are a ton of good things happening with this team, but you can’t have goaltending like this.

It’s looking terminal for DD. The absolute best case scenario right now is Labarbera can provide NHL-avergage goaltending for a while (with lovely back to back 3 in 4 nights coming up) and DD can be reinserted and humpty can maybe be put back together. But it’s possible that time’s up. If so, real test for MacT. Get some NHL average goaltending (at least) without giving up anything stupid. At least there isn’t really a shortage of underemployed goalies in the world.

  138. wheatnoil says:

There has to be a team out there that can use Nick Schultz. We have the depth to replace him at the moment and can go looking for an upgrade on D later.

That 3.5 is probably enough to work around and get Miller in. Hopefully you could also move one of the goalies.

Dubnyk’s Edmonton career ended tonight. I’m pretty sure that’s true.

This may be true, and for sure this level of goaltending can’t continue, but this really is absurd. Dubnyk has been a decent/good goalie for a few years now. He’s had a string of bad (terrible) games. If this string happened in November after a normal month of play would we be talking about getting a replacement? Things are so damn magnified at the start of the season.

Obviously MacT spending the summer looking for a replacement is a big item. So yes, this stretch of games may well be Dubnyk’s demise. It’s still absurd though.

There’s lots of talk about adjusting to new pads, but my guess is that the lack of confidence from MacT is what’s in his head. Damn confidence.

I just really hope this doesn’t cost legitimate assets in a lateral move for a non-elite goalie.

I agree that Nick Schultz is the most obvious way to clear space, but Ryan Miller is a $6.25m hit and we have f-all space, so it doesn’t get you close enough (and I’m not sure Miller is worth it anyhow).

If this is as bad as it seems, it’s likely not going to be solved by any significant trade, which is mostly impossible for cap reasons.

Like, if we’d had Richard Bachman in net would have been enough for Winnipeg and Toronto. (Not suggesting Richard Bachman should be starting for the Oilers.)

Just get a half competent goalie. There are lots of them on the outside looking in. All we need in the short term is some NHL average goaltending.

I agree totally, Shultz needs to be way more aware of his defensive responsibilities, being a Dman, defence should be a priority. That actually goes for pretty much the whole team. Dubbie has played terrible, saying that it’s not all on him but a lot sure is. I just hope they don’t freak and make a bad move. Waive Dubbie for the purpose of sending him down and bring up Backman give this a go.

  165. Fixall with Rexall says:

    gogliano,

What’s to disagree with in that? Yes, Salo never was a good goaltender, but his career never recovered from that goal. It happens to fringe starters all the time. Dubnyk has cemented his reputation as of tonight. Thats not exaggerating, this stretch of games will follow him forever now. He’s damaged as an Oiler.

It’s not for elitist reasons, but rather to limit it to people that will more than likely live up to their end of the bet. I mean if I lose I’ll pay up, so I gotta have reason to believe others will to. If you are relatively new here you could easily welsh on the bet.

Yep to Jultz. That was a horrible decision in OT to cruise the slot with the puck going in a different direction and Nuge well-hounded. I know he was just trying to give Nuge an outlet and normally the Witch craftys that pass, but that’s all Monte Carlo all the time. He needs one game off to think about it, but maybe Eakins holds off till Grebs is conditioned.

And I agree with the goaltending comment too. We’re not the even strength vaunt we were that year but we do need to fix the netminding and preferably before the trade deadline this time. We’re bleeding points we should have in the bag.

He has obviously been terrible but players have terrible stretches. If this 4 game stretch happened in the middle of the season we might raise an eyebrow but that is about it. This is no time to panic. There is never a good time to panic. I believe Dubnyk will return to his historical standard because most people do and no anecdote is going to change that. We need a short term solution.

The real problem is LaBarbera has also looked awful.

If we shift our thinking from “we must replace Dubby” to “we must replace Labarberra” then suddenly the world isn’t quite so dark. Now is not the time to trade Yak for Ryan Miller so we can overpay him.

Now is the time to go get Neuvirth, or Bryz, or whoever you think should have gotten LaBarbera’s job. Shouldn’t be that hard.
