OILERS AT PENGUINS G7, 13-14

As bad as it was, they still won the chance battle (Dennis King 17-13) and the Corsi 5×5 close (25-24). Looking for down arrows? A full quiver awaits.

THE POSITIVES

  • Eakins: Post-game media avail was very good. He felt things were fine until that sequence in the second period where Laddy brought the puck back into the zone (he didn’t mention Smid by name) and things went haywire for a couple of minutes. He made mention about the lack of chances against up to that point, and did not lay blame on the Nuge for an “unfortunate pass” (his words) that resulted in a turnover and the first goal.
  • Jeff Petry: I think he’s emerging as a quality NHL defenseman, and if Smid can get back to health (or stop listening to the dog whistles) that will help a great deal.
  • Boyd Gordon: Really like him. Not just the goals but the intelligent play.
  • David Perron: Man, I know he was uneven but great skill and try and he’s a prick to opponents. Love this guy.

THE NEGATIVES

  • Eakins: I thought he played the 4line way too much in the third period. This Oiler team is so dangerous, but I guess he felt there’s a game tomorrow night and he wanted his horses for that one.
  • Ladislav Smid: He had a tough night by eye and number. He might be hurt, but that’s a guess.
  • Penalty kill: Blech. Sorry if I’m being too technical.

I’m not going to blame the goalie and I’m not going to blame the top line–they had a nice start but the wheels fell off and the engine blew. It happens. Onward to Pittsburgh and the Department of the Monongahela.

Dallas Eakins healthy scratching of Nail Yakupov doesn’t look good this morning. I’m reminded of Whitey Herzog, who used to get into all kinds of trouble by double switching in crazy ways. I remember at least a couple of times he’d move his closer (right hander, Todd Worrell) to RF and then bring in a lefty to pitch to a LH bat. Then he’d double switch again to get Worrell back on the mound.

When it works, it looks good. When it doesn’t, it looks like a crazy person has taken the wheel. I don’t think Dallas Eakins is crazy, but he’s looking a little stubborn today. HSing Nail Yakupov has been a big story–and maybe that’s the plan, take away from the falling won-loss record–but now you’re left with either bringing him back tonight against Pittsburgh or letting a #1 overall pick who led your team in scoring last year rot on the vine.

Dallas Eakins has a long term contract and job security.  Why is he using his goodwill in such a curious manner? Don’t know. I’m not the coach, and he must have his reasons (one of which is getting people to be aware of the game outside of the fun moments). As an attention getter, it seems to have worked and I’d bet Nail gets in before the end of the road trip. If he struggles, Eakins has to pull him out of the lineup again–I don’t think he can turn back now. Buying in is the only possible solution to this issue.

The season is not lost–far from it–and he’s going to need that electric talent somewhere along the way. One hopes that Smyth or Joensuu can spend the night on the 4line and Yakupov can draw in with Gordon and Perron (as a guess). If not tonight, then you’d have to wonder about Thursday as being an option. After that, I wouldn’t even guess what the plan is for Yakupov.

bs23

Ladislav Smid had a tough night, I wonder if he’s hurt. Certainly his trad D partner has played well (Petry) but Laddy is going the wrong way. This is a good soldier, a guy who has grown up and gone through the tough years. He and Devan Dubnyk are having a bit of a tough time, hope things turn around for them soon.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

10 this morning, tsn 1260. It will be HEAVY on Oiler talk and not pleasant.

  • Tyler Dellow from mc79 hockey. Dubnyk’s season (so far) and when it will turn around, Oilers on the road, Saturday Splatterday in Toronto.
  • Rob Vollman from ESPN and Hockey Prospectus. We’ll talk Taylor Hall and the Vollman Sledgehammer is back!
  • Patricia Teter from Artful Puck. Patricia saw the team on the road this weekend, we’ll find out how the prospects looked.
  • Travis Yost from Hockeybuzz. Ottawa Senators are starting slowly. Why?
  • Corey Graham, pbp man for the Edmonton Oil Kings on TSN 1260. Oil Kings may be turning a corner.

10-1260 via text, @Lowetide on twitter. Hold on!

tracy lane

Fussy britches was right on Messier and the entire July 1, 2011 free agent day, so I’m curious about this one. Glenn Anderson? Grant Fuhr? I’d love it to be Lee Fogolin but something happened back there and we’ll never know what it is, I guess. I always thought Mark Lamb would end up here, but mid-season? Andy Moog? If it was Charlie Huddy I’d go mad with happiness.

Britches also says the Blues are willing to donate Brian Elliot (the Bay City Rollers of NHL goalies) for Tyler Pitlick, but you’d think if MacT wanted Elliot and that was the price it would be in the paper under transaction. Smid to Philly was also mentioned by Tracy.

ANGER MANAGEMENT

I feel like one of the ‘friends of Marsellus Wallace’ this morning. I’m in my 50′s now, you’d think getting mad at a hockey game would be something to leave behind along the way. I’m a fan, I can turn the channel or walk out of the arena any time I want to, and yet I’m sitting here like an idiot waiting for a trade.

Godspeed Craig MacTavish and Dallas Eakins too. I know you’re smart men, but this is one helluva mess we’re looking at this morning. And the hockey Gods? They’re sending you to Sidney Crosby as a special ‘kick in the nuts’ bonus.

I hope they got some sleep, and sincerely hope they do the right thing.

Whatever the hell that is.

UPDATE: LINES (4:45p)

Wow, I thought it was just a stereotype, but the pens really do whine to the refs after every f&*#ing whistle. Next time Crosby skates through the crease to bitch to the ref, Smid needs to remind him not to take the privilege of playing hockey for granted.

  2. BlacqueJacque says:

Well boys, I’m done for tonight. Gotta drive up to Cenovus to work.

I think I’ll keep the TV off the Oilers games for my shift. Why make myself unhappy if I’m already stuck in camp?

  3. russ99 says:

    Ugh. Bad penalty.

Also, kind of hard to score when all three forwards are behind the goal line.

  4. bookje says:

Is it too early to start the ‘Eakins has lost the room’ stuff?

  5. Lowetide says:

Really liking Perron’s play this season.

  6. RexLibris says:

If you had MA Fleury in net wouldn’t you be desperate to block shots as well?

  7. russ99 says:

Schultzy needs to shoot from the point more when we have two skaters down low on the PP.

    Much better period overall.

  8. bookje says:

    RexLibris: MA Fleury

You mean 0.930 sv% Fleury (this year)? I suspect that is higher than even the Oilers goalies.

  9. Andropod says:

The boys did well. Give ‘em some credit.

  10. jake70 says:

Is the term one-timer ever mentioned in and around the team?

You must be a Power Engineer. What class there BlacqueJacque?

  12. nycoil says:

Better? Shots 15-3. Lucky to be down only one, even though that five-hole goal itself should have been stopped.

  13. spoiler says:

RexLibris: If you had MA Fleury in net

Don’t tease me like that. Comes under the Geneva Convention heading of cruel and unusual punishment.

  14. VanOil says:

    jake70:
Is the term one-timer ever mentioned in and around the team?

It gets you a 2 day pass to the cheap seats

  15. Zelepukin says:

One of the best periods this year, despite the score and shots against from one of the best teams in the league. They really need to bare down on the Crosby line. You can tell the D are aware of how sneaky they can be in the corners but the forwards need to up the pressure on that line.

  16. Woodguy says:

    Lowetide:
Yakupov had a nice chance there, but he could have used a linemate too. For me, I don’t want to change that, but Eakins is likely aware that he’s going to be easier to check as a one dimensional (never pass) option.

Which is weird because Yak made a ton of great passes last year.

  17. Andropod says:

That was the unhappiest I have ever seen Jones.

  18. Woodguy says:

I’m seeing N.Shultz real bad passing wise.

Had 3 non-pressure passes that I saw that ended up on PIT sticks.

Good at preventing shots, but like rabies with the puck.

  19. Woodguy says:

    Lowetide:
Really liking Perron’s play this season.

    Love him.

You can almost hear him think “fuck you and people in that uniform” every time he plays.

  20. B S says:

    Woodguy,

He also played with Gagner, who he knew would give him the puck back in a better spot.

  21. gr8one says:

    Andropod,

    No doubt, me too..

was it just me or was that a little shot of bitterness directed toward Eakins re: his Marlie nepotism?

So, it’s like any other Oilers game?

Yeah, that was a little depressing to watch. Did you hear the “he’s got his guys” comment regarding Eakins?

  23. Lowetide says:

15-3 in shots looks terrible, but the 5×5 Corsi was 13-9. Pittsburgh will win this game, but they’re not a great team imo. Crosby, Malkin and pray for rain.

  24. RexLibris says:

bookje: You mean 0.930 sv% Fleury (this year)?I suspect that is higher than even the Oilers goalies.

Also the Fleury who looked surprisingly porous the last few years in the post-season.

  25. spoiler says:

At least we’re starting to jam the crease.

  26. VanOil says:

    Woodguy,

WG and LT Perron is a talented vicious little prick. Kenny Linseman comes to mind. I would love to see him in a 7 game playoff series.

  27. Lowetide says:

    Hemsky (Perron, Petry)

  28. RexLibris says:

Finally. See, lose the possession numbers and the wins will come in time. ;)

Letang and Neal out of the lineup.

    Both are impact players.

  30. russ99 says:

Nice point shot!! There we go.

    Keep it up, Oilers.

  31. OilClog says:

Why hasn’t Hemsky scored two by now?!? It’s all his fault!

    said every MSM ever.

  32. russ99 says:

  36. Lowetide says:

  37. Henry says:

These boys are playing with pride on the road.

  38. Lowetide says:

God love Ryan Smyth, he’s giving everything he has during this last few games. I don’t know how many he has, so am going to enjoy them.

  39. spoiler says:

was it just me or was that a little shot of bitterness directed toward Eakins re: his Marlie nepotism?

No,I actually think Eakins is a first class coach. I’m just worried that it might have been a sign of losing the team. Jonesy’s always been bright and chipper and here he was extremely unhappy. That’s all.

  43. theres oil in virginia says:

    Great D by Ference. Beautiful.

  44. Lowetide says:

Crap. Oilers had some nice things going there, LaBarbera needs to squeeze it.

  45. spoiler says:

VanOil: Is is bad that I feel nervous now that Extraskater data is looking good again?

Apparently yes. Knew that was going to be a goal right from Crosby kicking the puck up.

  46. Lowetide says:

The GM needs to get a fucking goalie. Now.

  50. SK Oiler Fan says:

why does everything need to be so hard for this team. That almost didn’t go in. That flurry to end the period was another example. Just no puck luck whatsoever.
    Sorry, I’m behind

  51. russ99 says:

Crosby redirected shot. Can’t expect LaBarbera to much more than he did, which was slow it down.

Hope the Oil don’t stop what they’re doing cause of that.

  52. Andropod says:

This is us playing without our 2nd line center and an AHL goalie. Not too shabby at all.

    Someone needs to Smac Orpic.

  53. tcho says:

  54. Henry says:

    Eberle (Hall, Arcobello)

  57. russ99 says:

    Yeah, Ebs!

This looks like a different team.

  58. spoiler says:

They’ve had so many chances this period, they deserved another.

  59. striatic says:

the bad luck this team was seeing this period is phenomenal.

    that tying goal was inevitable.

if the Oilers can just learn that if they keep up the pressure constantly, that good things will eventually happen, maybe we will see fewer lapses the other team can exploit.

  60. Fixall with Rexall says:

Toronto only 7 shots mid way through the second, and they have 3 goals. Wtf?

  61. striatic says:

i think that Mark Arcobello is a better hockey player than Will Acton.

i don’t care if 4C is supposed to be a “role player” slot, Arcobello deserves to be playing at the NHL level.

  62. rickithebear says:

If Arcobello goes on waivers at 600K he will be claimed by 2 dozen teams.

Nice work by Ference to allow the clearing to happen.

  65. Lowetide says:

  66. theres oil in virginia says:

    Three, apparently.

  67. striatic says:

    Arcobello there .. damn.

auditioning for Acton’s job on the PK?

if so, he’s earning the spot for sure.

  68. VanOil says:

Arcobello without a stick maintains postion against Crosby and Malkin on a PK. A player that belongs in the NHL.

  69. Well Oiled and Enthusiastic says:

    striatic,

He is. Better offence and a better hockey IQ I think. Arcobello will play a balanced two way game and get better with experience.

  70. spoiler says:

Arco leads the Oilers in TOI after two. Bylsma riding his top players even more than Big D is.

  71. Zelepukin says:

Lovin the Hall Ebs line. Eakins sat Yaks there for their second last shift and put out Hemsky. Probably because of his giveaway on the boards, which wasn’t a horrible thing but I guess Eakins is riding him on d-play.

  72. nycoil says:

Now that was a better period! Need one more, total team effort in the final 20. Let’s turn it around.

  73. theres oil in virginia says:

I’m not used to hearing this from the Oilers announcers:

    “There’s a shot and there’s a save!”

when the opponents have the puck, but I heard it a few times late in that period.

  74. Well Oiled and Enthusiastic says:

Question really is does Arcobello bring more to the table than Gagner? I think he does. He will push Gagner when he is back.

  75. spoiler says:

NHL has the Oil up 42-37 in the shooting battle. I imagine Dennis’ SCF-A concurs.

  76. Lowetide says:

Guys, Eakins double shifts guys doing well. Probably more to do with Hemsky than Yakupov. 83 is having a wonderful game imo, and Hall/Eb look like long lost friends.

  77. russ99 says:

Solid period of hockey. Seems the guys are getting a better feel for things.

Less overpursuit on D and more setting up open shots on O.

  78. SK Oiler Fan says:

Wow, that must be frustrating for the players. They absolutely owned that period and came out even. I bet grade A chances were 12 to 4. Nice to see

  79. striatic says:

i don’t know who else is watching the Pittsburgh feed, but the Pens broadcast team has been extremely high on Arcobello all game long. very impressive.

feels like Gagner is going to come back soon.

Nice to see them try Arco on the PK.

The only reason to keep Acton here over Arco is PK.

Currently Arco is ahead in all categories but that one, but apparently its one that can trump the other categories.

    Good lines.

RNH looks behind by half a beat, but if there is anyone on the team to figure that out quickly its him.

  82. Woodguy says:

    Well Oiled and Enthusiastic:
Question really is does Arcobello bring more to the table than Gagner? I think he does. He will push Gagner when he is back.

He doesn’t take 89′s job, but its great to see someone who can step in if need be.

If he’s on the roster, then 89 moves that much quicker and works that much harder because 26 would eat his lunch given a chance.

Roster competition is so good for results.

  83. gr8one says:

When Gags comes back this team might actually have three truly legit scoring lines.

    Hall Nuge Eberle
    Perron Gagner Yakupov
    Joensuu Arco Hemsky
    Smyth Gordon Jones/Gazdic

And a 4line that actually resembles quality!

  84. leadfarmer says:

I typically don’t watch the Oil the second game of back to backs, but this is the best I’ve seen them play in years.

  85. striatic says:

gr8one: And a 4line that actually resembles quality!

any line with Gordon on it will not be a 4th line.

the occasional game like this one aside, Gordon is going to get more minutes than Arcobello.

4 game misconducts and over 77 minutes in penalties in the first period of SJ vs St.lou.

  87. Lowetide says:

31-33 5×5 Corsi after 2. That was a helluva 2nd period, hope the Oil don’t run out of gas. Still think Crosby tipped that 2-1 goal.

  88. Southern Oil says:

Acton can sit in the press box. Probably for the best, compared to sending Acton to OKC. Keeps the pressure on Arco, can give the coach some options in case someone gets injured.

  91. Andropod says:

striatic: Acton can sit in the press box.

He’d be an excellent 13th forward. Or would he be a better wing than Jonesy? or Brown?

  93. striatic says:

Andropod: He’d be an excellent 13th forward. Or would he be a better wing than Jonesy? or Brown?

i don’t know. but the point is the team doesn’t have to go “back on their word” if Acro plays him out of a job.

someone has to sit in the press box, and better a guy who can at least PK and win faceoffs than a facepuncher.

  94. Henry says:

    Lowetide:
31-33 5×5 Corsi after 2. That was a helluva 2nd period, hope the Oil don’t run out of gas. Still think Crosby tipped that 2-1 goal.

The Penguins’ telecast did a slo mo breakdown of that goal. Crosby tipped it. He’s a hockey demon.

  95. tcho says:

    Andropod,

Yes! He’s been the best of the 4th line, plus he’s an extra centre who can PK and win FOs.

  96. LMHF#1 says:

Even without questioning whatever lunatic metric you’re using (I’m guessing it’s power play goals against per sixty minutes, without taking into consideration on-ice save percentage or any other contextual factor – am I close?), the above statement makes no sense. On average, below average NHL penalty killers are likely to be better than NHLers who don’t penalty kill. That’s why they penalty kill. Sure, coaches aren’t perfect (so they’re not always going to properly select the best available penalty killers), and there are some stars who don’t get played on the PK because coaches are saving them for even strength and power play, notwithstanding that they might excel on the penalty kill, but overall your statement above is abject nonsense.

only if we have a goalie that can match the team effort.

  123. nycoil says:

That was a solid effort. But so tough already to just be counting moral victories. 1-5-1 is a hole, no doubt. Hopefully 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 after the first 10 games, get Gagner back and have a fighting chance, but they are running out of tarmac slowly, but surely on moral victories.

This was surely a good step on the road back. Held this powerhouse to a 1 goal lead at best. This is so close to being a really good team. Gags returning will give Big D lots of good choices. Most importantly, a regular NHL goalie just for this season will surely put them over the top to start winning against good and bad teams.
This was not a bad game. At all, and way better than my worst case scenario of 0-15.

Keep it up boys you are sooooo close!

Only caught the third tonight – good effort from what I saw: up-tempo, never really hemmed in too long; not enough shots to show for it, but still.

Crosby’s tongue proved to be the difference. Can’t really fault anyone Malkin’s garbage goal. His right time was Labarbera’s wrong place.

Like Hall saving the day on the empty netter, and giving Crosby the sneaky punch in the face while Sid was on his knees. He’s a keeper, that #4.

Saw Gordon good. Hemsky and Ebs seemed to be flyin’ as well. Now if only they could win a game, poor saps.

I do not understand Eakins line combinations. Theoretically Hall and Hemsky works, but they get shelled. Sure the defence isn’t helping, but at some time you gotta look at the track record and try something different.

Not putting Hall – RNH – Eberle back together when your 1-5-1 seems just stubborn.

    Why not:

    Hall – RNH – Eberle

    Perron – Gordon – Hemsky

    Smyth – Arcobello – Yakupov

then feed the Yakupov line butter soft minutes? With those top two lines you can see who gets toughs vs second toughs on any given night. You have a veteran line to calm the waters if things get crazy. And you can slide Gagner into Smyth’s spot when Gagner is ready and watch that line feast on those soft minutes.

Lowetide: Dennis King ‏@DKingBH 1hOilers outchance pens 19-15; 5-2 ST

Since the third period of the Devils game, the Oilers have been steadily improving in their play. Tonight they looked the most committed for 60 minutes to their system that we have seen thus far. They didn’t wilt or get all shook up when the Pens scored, and instead kept at the system. They started driving the net with consistency in the second period and created quality chances. With a little confidence and some bounces, and a return to average goaltending, the Oil could do some serious damage.

Belov’s play looks more and more sure with each passing game. Petry had another real strong game tonight. It’s too bad he plays the right side, because he would be perfect with Jultz.

Lines seemed to work tonight, and I am really loving the play of Arcobello. I almost wish MacT hadn’t made the gentleman’s agreement with Gagner. They miss Gags on the PP, but Arco is better everywhere else. Lots of battle in his body. Lots of smarts. Great vision, always knows where everyone is. Defensively responsible. (Samwise hasn’t had a chance under the new sys, so this is a little unfair by me).

Eberle with the most TOI tonight which means Eakins is seeing what we’re seeing. The best horses each night seem to be given their head. I commented on his play the last two games and now this is three decent games in the row. Looks way more engaged physically. I was stunned when we saw a complete unwillingness to take a hit to make a play against Vancourva.

Lots of short shifts in the third by the Oil. They seemed to be buying into the coach’s plan there too, because there were some doozy extended flights in the Caps match.

Just need to see some sustain to this play, no lapses of confidence, and some NHL average netminding. If I’m MacT, I’m patient and see where this team goes before I start blowing assets on possible fixes. Or risking the dressing room to Bryz’s madness.

  168. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Pretty good game tonight by the Oil. Much more desperation led by Hall and Ebs.

I think if Hall slams that second period backhand under Fleury for 2-1, we get at least a point. If this game wasn’t preceded by the steaming stenching pile of the last 3 games, we would be pretty pleased by a very competitive game in a tough rink, back to backs…

    The good

Love the Frenchman. (is there an echo in here?)
    Belov looked good.

Jones made the 4th line head in the right direction. Have to keep him there.
If he shows even a half decent ability on the PK I’d keep Arco over Acton. As Ebs says he is similar to Gags and RNH. That’s a good thing. He sounds like an Oiler. He plays the open nets and 5 alarm scoring chances almost exactly like our previous captain for petes sake. Sorry Acton Sr.

    The bad

About 8 mins into the first a shot is redirected to the short side, he goes down and it stays out, trickling behind the net, but for a split second he doesn’t feel it and expects that it snuck 5 hole and he starts to give the poor me shrug of the shoulders and head tilted look at the defense, just for a second before realizing it wasn’t in.

That he was already halfway into his goal against pout, just expecting that it must have gone in, pretty much sums up our goaltending to start the season. No confidence. No guts.

A big body with solid positioning and smooth, fast, correct technical movement are all critical in todays game, but they still have to be married to a certain level of fire, focus, battle, a plain will to keep it out at all costs.

Our two guys don’t have the latter. I haven’t seen a swinging set of nuts in our crease since Roli.
