OILERS AT PANTHERS G16, 13-14

A season that has already produced casualties may result in some familiar faces being sent away as the growing pains continue. The Oilers have made trades on road trips, but don’t make deals in November. Then again, this isn’t a normal November. Or maybe it is, and that’s the problem.

 Azorcan3

The Oilers don’t make a lot of trades in November. Here’s the count since 2000:

  1. November 10, 2000: Oilers trade Bill Guerin and their 2001 1st rd pick (Shaonne Morrissonn) to Boston for Anson Carter and the Bruins 1st rd pick in 2001 (Ales Hemsky).
  2. November 11, 2005: Oilers claim C Krys Kolanos off waivers from Phoenix.
  3. November 11, 2008: Oilers claim F Jesse Boulerice off waivers from  Colorado.
  4. November 11, 2009: Oilers lose F Steve MacIntyre to Florida via waivers.
  5. November 10, 2011: Oilers re-claim D Taylor Chorney off waivers from St. Louis.

This is not a major list. However,

dreger mact

There’s any number of players on either team (Anaheim: Hiller, Maroon; NYR: list below) the Oilers might be interested in, and it appears that the Rangers are kicking tires on Hemsky with a Yakupov chaser. There are lots of Rangers to like (McDonagh, Del Zotto, Kreider, Brassard) and Slats loves, loves, loves trading for skill when that skill is down on its luck. He did it plenty here and continues to do it in NYC.

My guess is that Hemsky goes to Manhattan, with someone like Brassard or JT Miller heading here. Hiller is the obvious Anaheim connection, but the smart play is to let Dubnyk establish himself as the #1 again. Trading Yakupov this early–and when he’s struggling–is not a sound decision based on history.

Jonathan Willis has a nice article on waiver eligible Rostislav Olesz and makes a strong argument for picking him up.

lost5Ryan Smyth returns tonight, I’m fond of that guy and I think he’s proven a few people wrong this year–the club badly needs him to play his heart out tonight. Knowing Eakins he’ll play 28 minutes and sweat off 80 pounds, but this team needs a win.

  • Nuge-Hemsky-Eberle (this line needs to score 9 points)
  • Gagner-Smyth-Yakupov (love moving Yak to R, smart decision.Showcase?)
  • Gordon-Jones-Arcobello (Gordon has a sore foot, Arcobello at R again)
  • Acton-Gazdic-Eager (it irritates me that THIS is the healthy line)
  • Smid-Petry (settle things down, men)
  • Ference-Larsen (this is a guess)
  • N Schultz-Fedun (also a guess, thrilled for Fedun)
  • Dubnyk (back in the South Beach groove)

Hall is likely back on the weekend (SAT-Philly, SUN-Chi-town) and my word we’ve missed him.

EDMONTON OILERS RE 2013-14

NAME GP G A PTS
TAYLOR HALL  70 37 45 82
JORDAN EBERLE  78 28 37 65
RYAN NUGENT HOPKINS  62 21 42 63
NAIL YAKUPOV  82 29 23 52
SAM GAGNER   82 15 37 52
DAVID PERRON 69 20 24 44
ALES HEMSKY  66 11 25 36
RYAN SMYTH  72 12 16 28

My projections are in the ditch. Hall (76, 25-42-67) and Eberle (projected for 82, 16-38-54) aren’t out of sight yet, but Yak City (80, 6-12-18) is long gone blue. Nugent-Hopkins (on track for 80, 25-37-62) may hit the point total but in many more games. Perron (80, 12-43-55) is ahead of the game but (of course) injured and we don’t have a timeline for return and Smyth (75, 28-9-37) is also tracking well. Gagner has zero points in 2 games, we’ll have to wait awhile to see how he tracks.

A lot of talk about Kevin Lowe, Craig MacTavish and Dallas Eakins getting fired, but I’m not buying. Craig MacTavish didn’t survive cancer, get his degree and build his resume for a GM job so he could crawl down the hallway and ask Kevin Lowe if he could have the key to the executive washroom. That’s not his style. Lowe may indeed be called in for his expertise, but the buck stops with MacT–I can’t imagine it any other way.

As for Eakins: they hired him for his ideas and ability to turn promising players into NHL players, and you have to give it time. I have a few questions about his decisions, but that’s true of any coach we’ve seen since arriving at the game and evaluating from a coach/manager point-of-view. Eakins has had a rough go, and he’s going to have to change some things, but firing him now is a bad idea.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

lost3TSN 1260 at 10 this morning, Oiler game tonight and Oil Kings too. Scheduled to appear:

  1. Bruce McCurdy from Cult of Hockey. Bruce is the calm, experienced voice of reason. We’ll attempt to keep each other from jumping off the ledge.
  2. Andrew Bucholtz 55 yard line. The Eskimos fired their coach yesterday, and the GM is going to search the world over for a new solution.
  3. Ryan Batty, Copper and Blue. The interview outline suggests we’ll talk about tonight’s game, Hall’s return and what MacT can do, but with Batty the discussions usually wander. So, expect submarines and locusts.
  4. Corey Graham, Oil Kings pbp on TSN 1260. Corey gives us an update on the OK and their improving record.

  1. Lucinius says:

Good powerplay.. should have had two goals. WTB some finish for Eberle and Nuge.

  2. "Steve Smith" says:

    spoiler:
Jesus, how did Eberle miss that? And then Nuge too.

They’ve had their turn scoring goals for the Oilers.

  3. Lowetide says:

That PP did EVERYTHING but score. 2 minutes of really good pressure. Bad luck they didn’t score, but you do that again and you’ll score.

  4. jp says:

Wow, haven’t seen that kind of PP dominance for, like 6 months. Looks like playing Florida cures all.

Guess that’s how most teams in the league feel playing the Oilers.

  5. bendelson says:

Acton can’t turn that puck over in that situation.
Not up 3-1 with the momentum, on the road, while in a slump.

    Thankfully we have solid goaltending.

  6. TartanArmy says:

Despite no goals on that pp, great pressure.

  7. spoiler says:

    “Steve Smith”:
I just had a look to see who else in the lineup has never scored as an Oiler. My conclusion is that we’ll score five, with the next goals by Dubnyk and LaBarbera.

    No Larsen?

  8. Hockeyman 99 says:

Yakupov looks better with smyth on his line. Horcoff role. Older player to lean on for guidance.

  9. "Steve Smith" says:

    spoiler,

Unless I’m missing something, he already scored tonight.

  10. Southern Oil says:

Our PP even looks good! What’s going on?

  11. Lowetide says:

    Hockeyman 99:
Yakupov looks better with smyth on his line. Horcoff role. Older player to lean on for guidance.

Agreed. Gagner looks slow again though. He butchered a 2 on 1 with Smyth in the first.

  12. spoiler says:

They’re finally shooting with some regularity.

  13. Jon K says:

Power play looks much better on that last one. Funny thing, you move the puck quickly and skate with purpose, you get more shots and scoring chances.

I really like Larsen, I’m rooting for him to stick. Haven’t seen him exposed by eye so far, but I missed the first and beginning of the second.

  14. D says:

    Lucinius:
The Florida Panthers; the team that makes the Oilers look good.

    Can we find 28 others?

  15. spoiler says:

    “Steve Smith”:
    spoiler,

Unless I’m missing something, he already scored tonight.

Hey, I’m trying to create some battle here!

…That’s what I get for just looking up rosters between whistles.

  16. Jon K says:

I have to admit, I get a significant sense of satisfaction watching Ryan Whitney being victimized by *our* fourth line, rather than that of other teams. Ha.

  17. spoiler says:

I like this coming back with the top 2 lines right after the PP.

  18. Brackenburied says:

Lowetide: Agreed. Gagner looks slow again though. He butchered a 2 on 1 with Smyth in the first.

There’s no teeth to his game.

  19. spoiler says:

Brackenburied: There’s no teeth to his game.

    You wired that shot.

  20. Lowetide says:

    Brack:

It looks like Eakins has noticed, moved him down here at 5×5 (although he did get some PP time iirc there). I think they should move Arcobello up until Gagner is able to keep up.

  21. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Lowetide,

I would trade Gagner for Reimer and Franson. I bet TO would to. They can spare both players and Arcobello is Gags replacement.

  22. dangilitis says:

    Brackenburied,

Damn, I hope the deadpan delivery of that pun was intentional, brilliant

  23. Lynas1 says:

No feed to watch but oilers.com says Fedun scored! That’s awesome!

    Lowetide,

I would trade Gagner for Reimer and Franson. I bet TO would to. They can spare both players and Arcobello is Gags replacement.

I think it’s really important to make sure Arcobello can play at that level before you make a move. Leafs need a center who can step right in and play, and honestly Gagner looks about two steps slow.

  26. Lucinius says:

Oh, its time for the ‘TRADE YAK!’ segment. Muting that.

  27. Hockeyman 99 says:

Would Montreal move Suban for Yakupov? They never seem to really show him any love.

  28. dangilitis says:

    Gagner’s FO% at 13, up almost 50% from last game’s 9%. Baby steps?

  29. Lowetide says:

    Michael Parkatti ‏@mparkatti 2m

Oilers lead shot attempts 25-24, 51%. Shots within 25 feet are 6-2 EDM. Expected goal % of 56%.

Michael will be my guest tomorrow morning at 10. We may–MAY–have some good news to talk about!

  30. Brackenburied says:

Lowetide: I think it’s really important to make sure Arcobello can play at that level before you make a move. Leafs need a center who can step right in and play, and honestly Gagner looks about two steps slow.

What about trade Arco? Seems crazy right now but you know, sell high.

  31. Henry says:

It’s a little premature to laud the OIlers too much against such lethargic Panthers squad, but man the skating and puck support was terrific that period. Something to build on PTL.

  32. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Lowetide,

even if Arco is a Sam lite offensively he is twice the player in the neutral and defensive zones and can win face-offs.

  33. TartanArmy says:

Doesn’t Gagner have some sort of no trade clause from his contract negotiations during the summer?

  34. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Brackenburied,

Arco helps with Cap issues and actually plays both sides of the puck.

  35. Nostradumbass says:

I love how the Oilers are flat out embarrassed to announce they hired Messier to the pro scouting department

Sportsnet showed Mess and Lowe scouting the Rangers game last night

We’ll just see Mess at the draft this June and Matty wil write some fluff piece about #11′s integral new role in the organization

  36. Hockeyman 99 says:

    TartanArmy,

not until next year, I believe.

  37. Romulus Apotheosis says:

These BB&T commercials are hilarious. And, who is the market in FLA to go and see the Trans Siberian Orchestra’s weird rock themed, classical(ish) freak show?

  38. TartanArmy says:

    Hockeyman 99,

So if that’s the case, he could be moved before the seasons end.

  39. Thor762 says:

    Hockeyman 99:
    Lowetide,

even if Arco is a Sam lite offensively he is twice the player in the neutral and defensive zones and can win face-offs.

I agree. Acrobello is much better defensively, at faceoffs, and seems more willing to work his ass off compared to Gagner. He is also a MUCH cheaper cap hit.

  40. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    Nostradumbass,

It was released (albeit quietly) earlier in the year by Elliott. No one is quite sure what his job is.

  41. Lowetide says:

You know, the longer we go without an official announcement, the more curious I am about the role. Seriously. I know he won’t coach, but this is a weird appointment all around, and I bet you money it’ll be ‘vice president in charge of getting the next college Lucic’ or something like that. Messier will fly around and look at all the Messier’s each spring and the club will draft them some coke machines.

    Something like that.

  42. Hockeyman 99 says:

    TartanArmy,

Pretty sure Players can’t get no trade clauses before they are 25.

  43. Nuckout says:

As cliche as it sounds, a win tonight after holding a 2 goal lead will be a huge confidence builder going into Philly, etc.

Baby steps. If Eakins can build on positives like holding a lead, limiting odd man rushes, limiting giveaways in the neutral zone, and generating more shots towards the net like tonight, wins will come. Yeah, they’re still making tons of mistakes, but a win tonight is all about breaking the cycle of despair.

  44. Brackenburied says:

    Hockeyman 99:
    Brackenburied,

Arco helps with Cap issues and actually plays both sides of the puck.

Yeah but he might get us that heavy weight we’ve been looking for!! Just kidding. No I seriously prefer Arco to Gagner right now. Gagner should of stayed on the IR a few weeks longer.

  45. Nostradumbass says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

    unofficially “Coach in Waiting”

  46. Nostradumbass says:

  47. Thor762 says:

    TartanArmy:
    Hockeyman 99,

So if that’s the case, he could be moved before the seasons end.

Yeah Gagner’s NTC kicks in next year. And there was something about a handshake agreement on not trading him the first year.

  48. Brackenburied says:

    Nostradumbass:
    Romulus Apotheosis,

    unofficially “Coach in Waiting”

They brought him in to give a ‘shut the f’k up’ look whenever Lowe speaks.

Wasn’t a handshake agreement on not moving Gagner in year one part of the negotiations though?

    Yes.

  50. Chris says:

Man that’s an empty building in Miami eh? You can draw that many people to a rookie camp in Edmonton.

  51. Lowetide says:

That looked like a terrible hooking call on Petry. Dive city by Jesse Winchester, (Nothin’ but a breeze).

  52. Chris says:

Its amazing that Winchester has managed to hang around for so many years in the league. Beyond that one big goal against Detriot he’s an utterly forgetable player. But big players always get lots of chances.

  53. Lowetide says:

Nuge is a wonderful player. Lordy.

  54. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Lowetide,

I think Sam would be okay with going home.

  55. Lowetide says:

    Hockeyman 99:
    Lowetide,

I think Sam would be okay with going home.

I don’t think it’s so much want Sam wants, it’s what Toronto needs. Man they need a center with two of their current guys down. Gagner doesn’t look 100% to me, why would Toronto deal for a player coming back from injury and struggling?

If they’re giving up Reimer and Franson, get a healthy center.

  56. dangilitis says:

    Chris,

I think you are thinking Brad Winchester. But he also had a good go of it in the NHL

  57. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Lowetide,

Its conditioning not recovery from knee surgery.

  58. Lowetide says:

    Hockeyman 99:
    Lowetide,

Its conditioning not recovery from knee surgery.

I’m not sure what we’re arguing about. I’m saying Toronto shouldn’t trade for Gagner BECAUSE he’s not in condition. You’re saying it’s conditioning. Agree.

  59. jp says:

Brackenburied: What about trade Arco? Seems crazy right now but you know, sell high.

Sure, if you can get anything worthwhile for him. But the return won’t be worth it. It’s the exact same reason you don’t jettison Gagner now. Arcobello has looked good through 15 games, but he’s 25 years old, 165 lbs and just ended a 5 game pointless streak (and scored his first NHL goal EVER). I certainly wouldn’t be ready to hand him the Oilers 2C job, I don’t see why any GM in the league would either. If you can get a 2nd rounder or a 3rd liner for him, great. I just don’t see that happening. And moving him for a 5th rounder doesn’t make much sense to me. I like the player and hope he can keep this up, but I don’t see him having trade value, even with the sell high.

  60. Nuckout says:

    Lowetide,

Give Gags until the end of this road trip, he’ll return to form. Don’t forget this is his 3rd game of the season.

  61. Brackenburied says:

    Arco’s back. Trade him.

  62. Lowetide says:

    Nuckout:
    Lowetide,

Sure, he seems to be playing a little better in the third period here.

  63. jp says:

100% agreed. Yes, it’s against the only team in the league worse than you, but a win is a win. These guys need any positive energy they can get now.

    Edit: and the cats score…

  64. Brackenburied says:

I was wondering if he has more value then Gags. I wouldn’t trade him unless you got quite a good return.

  65. Lowetide says:

A poor pass from Eberle, but Hemsky needs to be more aware too, just chip it out and re-set.

  66. rich says:

Florida broadcaster called it right, Hemsky with the bad turnover and then doesn’t get back.

  67. Lowetide says:

Oilers always pay when they don’t get that puck out. This year it seems to cost them every time. 3-2 now, Upshall scores 4 times a year lol.

  68. OilClog says:

Arco deserves his spot back until someone out plays him for it

  69. Hockeyman 99 says:

LOL. I’m not arguing. :) I thought it was exchange of ideas. Everybody is a little ornery lately. Just want to know if the consensus is its a trade that can be positive for both sides.

  70. Nuckout says:

Dear Oilers, you just got scored on by a grown man named Scottie. Enjoy the basement.

    - Hockey gods

  71. Lowetide says:

    OilClog:
Arco deserves his spot back until someone out plays him for it

It was an interesting decision (moving Arcobello to RW) and I’d say through 3 games (well 2 games and two periods) they would have been better off.

However, there’s also a danger in going with Arcobello because he’s not a proven NHL player. You’d want to see him do this for a couple of years. So, he gets a utility role, and damned if he doesn’t score a goal tonight and look good.

I don’t know what role he’s going to carve out, but he sure seems determined!

  72. jp says:

And don’t forget he was on a liquid diet for a good chunk of his “rehab”. His current lack of conditioning is being thrown around like he was eating pancakes. He was not.

  73. Nuckout says:

    jp,

    Pancakes? Is his back okay?

  74. Lucinius says:

Oilers going to need another goal.

You just know Whitney will get one.

    Ex-Oiler and all.

  75. spoiler says:

What a sick short pass by Ebs after ragging for the line change.

  76. Lowetide says:

Eberle with a nice play there, almost results in a goal.

  77. Hockeyman 99 says:

    jp,

But he is who we think he is, it’s just that he is out of shape due to his injury. An offensively gifted center who is poor defensively and bad on the dot.

  78. spoiler says:

    spoiler:
What a sick short pass by Ebs after ragging for the line change.

Hemsky could have used that move five years ago.

  79. Thor762 says:

Long term I think Arco will always play harder than Ganger. Arco has had to fight for EVERY inch and opportunity he has ever had or ever will have. And he knows it. That sort of determination and drive isn’t likely to ever quit over his career. Because if it ever does he’s back to the AHL without much thought likely.

When would Gagner ever have that sort of “threat” looming over him and providing motivation?

Not saying Gagner isn’t a player. Just that Acro has more to lose and so has more to play for. And it shows.

  80. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Thor762,

Agree entirely and think it is a good thing to have on the team.

  81. Lowetide says:

Really nice play by Smyth there hauling ass to make sure there was no icing. I know he’s 90 but that’s a guy who works hard.

  82. spoiler says:

I wonder how many face offs is 27 going to take over the rest of the game?

  83. Henry says:

jp: And don’t forget he was on a liquid diet for a good chunk of his “rehab”. His current lack of conditioning is being thrown around like he was eating pancakes. He was not.

Totally right. Strawberry Ensure is the worst tasting gunk ever invented.

  84. Lowetide says:

Arco icing, thought he had that. rookies get screwed. Eberle with a great chance, Nugent-Hopkins is having a brilliant game.

  85. spoiler says:

Jesus that was a dangerous line change.

  86. Hockeyman 99 says:

Hemsky has been so much more physical this year.

  87. spoiler says:

  90. Lowetide says:

and of course it’s Upshall again. 3-3. Oilers are lost in a hockey loop.

  91. Hockeyman 99 says:

    face palm

  92. kooler says:

    OilClog,

Agreed…..happy to move Acton out of C though. Once we get Perron / Hall / Joensuu back you can essentially move Smyth and Jones to a 4th with Gordon that play hard minutes.

Would definitely like to see a big man on the 1st line with hands…remember the old days when even Semenko played with Gretzky and KurrI……Simmonds again.

……You got to be kidding me!

  93. jp says:

    Hahah. Upshall again.

    Dubnyk again.

  94. D says:

    Yep. No surprise there.

  95. Brackenburied says:

Why was Gagner on the ice!!!

  96. Lucinius says:

If Dubnyk is in proper positioning that doesn’t go in, imo.

    Good old Oilers.

  97. fuzzy muppet says:

So Hemsky has the brutal giveaway and then leaves his man and Yakupov gets benched…

Then 89 is out in the last minute…

    Nice Eakins, real nice

  98. Thor762 says:

When hasn’t Dubnyk let in a tying goal in the last minute of the game?

  99. Nuckout says:

And the season-record crowd of 3,578 comes to life.

    Fack.

  100. jp says:

I’m gonna call off my playoff optimism again now.

  101. OilClog says:

Whifffffff.. Is that Dubnyk’s final chance at making the big save? Like come on

  102. LMHF#1 says:

    Too many missed chances.

Still, Gagner’s got to have his check there. Schultz too.

  103. spoiler says:

Those were not happy faces on the bench.

  104. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    I’m so excited about Draisaitl

  105. bill needle says:

Don’t worry, these bad Dubnyk goals are just a temporary thing.

  106. Hockeyman 99 says:

I suggested very strongly this summer the oilers would be much better off to trade for Loungo and move DD and I was Tarred and Feathered.

  107. D says:

Can we just stick a fork in Dubnyk at this point? He isn’t an NHL playoff goalie.

  108. Lucinius says:

And we still have that inevitable ex-Oiler goal to deal with….

  109. Ribs says:

Chabot has given his goalies a strict 4 GA/G quota, it seems.

  110. Chris says:

We are going to get a new coach this year….after the Oilers drive Eakins to hang himself.

  111. spoiler says:

    Hockeyman 99:
Hemsky has been so much more physical this year.

    Nuge too.

  112. Thor762 says:

Bring Bachman back please. At least he was exciting to watch in the last minute of the Kings game saving everything in sight.

So Hemsky has the brutal giveaway and then leaves his man and Yakupov gets benched…

If you bench anyone, it would be Eberle for making a no look back pass in his own zone with the lead. Eakins also has no clue how to use Yakupov.

  115. russ99 says:

What a kick in the slats.

Dubnyk is running out of time. He needs to steal us a game soon or he’s gone.

  116. TeeVee says:

    Man, our goalies are awesome.

  117. Lucinius says:

man, Gagner can’t even put the puck on Larsen’s stick from that far away? Puts it to his skate? When did he lose his ability to pass?

  118. spoiler says:

They have no clue of what to do.

  119. Brackenburied says:

Did yak play in the 3rd?

  120. russ99 says:

Cmon guys. A OT PP is supposed to be a gimme.

    Wake up!

  121. spoiler says:

    ARRRRCCCCCCOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ARCOBELLO!!!!!! I LOVE IT!

    Thank Gord

  124. Suntory Hanzo says:

Give it to Yak for one timer. repeat.

  125. Thor762 says:

    ARCOBELLO!!! AGAIN

  126. Chris says:

Yay…we suck marginally less than the Panthers and their “crowd” of 2200 fans.

  127. Hockeyman 99 says:

    OMG Finally

  128. rich says:

Good on Acrobello. Am really happy for the kid.

  129. Brackenburied says:

  130. fuzzy muppet says:

Arcobello can have 89′s job. Nice game for him

ARCOBELLO!!! That OT goal flashed in front of my eyes before it went in. Wonderful!!!

  132. OilClog says:

    Arco!

  133. Nuckout says:

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrco!

I’m stoked for this kid. The seal has been broken.

  134. kooler says:

Trade Gagner, keep Arco, get Nug a knee brace.

  135. Lucinius says:

And Hemsky shows Gagner how to pass the puck right there.

Thank god for the win. Oilers did their best to screw the pooch.

  136. bookje says:

    YaaaaaaaaaY!

  137. Rebilled says:

    Thank Christ

  138. jp says:

As tempered as this win is by the Oilers awful start, and coArming against the worst team in the league, it still beats losing.

  139. Ribs says:

Arcobello? Hot Damn. Would ya look at that.

  140. spoiler says:

Arco has had a good shot all along, he’s just been snakebit.

  141. jp says:

Brackenburied: I was wondering if he has more value then Gags. I wouldn’t trade him unless you got quite a good return.

I don’t see how Arcobello’s value could be approaching Gagner’s, even with the huge difference in salary. Arcobello’s value will grow if he keeps this up, but we’re in the early days here. Gagner, with all his flaws is an established ~50 point player with upside (65 point pace last year) who just turned 24.

  142. russ99 says:

A win is a win, but yeeesh! Some small positives, but a ton of improvement is needed.

If we don’t get better play from all 18+2, Tampa will kill us.

After watching them play the Hawks twice recently, I’m calling 8-2, Bolts.

  143. Henry says:

    Barons win!

  144. kooler says:

Take a look at the highlights and check out how fast Larsen caught up to the play for his first. kid has some wheels.

  145. Lowetide says:

Well, we’re going to have to give Arcobello a spot in the top 9–even when everyone is healthy–because he’s forcing the issue.

On the other hand, Dubnyk is poor late and that’s bad.

  146. Deeg says:

Great to see a double screen in front by Gordon and Smyth on Arco’s goal.

  147. Suntory Hanzo says:

We hoped for as always, but but it turned out the best.

At least we have a decent 4th line center finally.

  151. Numenius says:

Love Arcobello. What a beauty OT goal.

  152. russ99 says:

    spoiler,

If everyone is healthy? No way.

Arcobello is still a AAAA player, it’s just that he’s working harder than these other guys. He’s at his ceiling, the others aren’t.

So the percentages are evened out right now? Right this moment? And define "okay" and "good".

I like his release and his velocity… Accuracy is still an unknown.

  154. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    Arco! fantastic!

I’m still stoked about Draisaitl though. Giving up that 2 goal lead (again) against FLA tells you a lot.

Also, Yak didn’t play the last 10 mins or in OT:

ps we need all the centers we can get.

oiler domination coming to a tv near you haha

That’s the sad thing. I was grinning away thinking we have Hall, Perron, and Belov all coming back and we’d have quite the team and then, oh yeah, goaltending. We’re screwed.

  157. russ99 says:

I’m not ripping the kid, I’m happy for him.

And it’s nice to see a forward graduate from the AHL to really help out the big club. It’s been a long time coming.

  158. Nuckout says:

    russ99,

True enough, but it all starts here. You can’t get up and stand on your own when you’re down on the ground being kicked in the balls.

It starts small, but they MUST build on it. There’s no other way.

Their long term ceiling is irrelevant right now, if they’re not working and not producing. Right now, Arco’s work rate and production makes a good argument for a top 6 role over the next stretch of games.

  165. spoiler says:

Romulus Apotheosis: I can’t really remember to be honest.

    I do.

  167. Nuckout says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

That is telling. Something’s up. Yak city may be playing himself off this team sooner than later.

Can they send him to OKC for a stint without risking waivers? is that even a possibility?

  168. Numenius says:

spoiler: Fedun was sheltered tonight.11:24 TOI.

Good point. It’d be poor form to send him back so soon though. He also had the team’s highest +/- at 2.

  169. bendelson says:

Gordon and Arcobello had fantastic games…
A little bad luck for Gordon on that late goal but he had some really great shifts late in the third after the Hemsky mistake gave FLA life. Very impressive.

  170. Henry says:

spoiler: Similar to how Krueger used him last year.

For a goal scorer, Yak doesnt really look for open spots when the puck is cycling down low. Just when its high. A couple times Gagner took the puck to the net when he probably wanted to pass to yak, yak just wasnt shaking his check.

He’s got a long way to go before he risks waivers… but there are a lot of other reasons you think long and hard before doing that…

As I said earlier, Yak sitting for the end of games was very similar to what Krueger did last year with the lead. He still had more ice time tonight than Jones and the 4th line… Eakins really tightened the bench to try to get the W. I don’t think there’s much in this.

  173. Young Oil says:

Chase doesn’t appear to be playing for Calgary tonight…any word on why not? I know he was named to the Super Series Roster, but that isn’t for a few weeks so I don’t think that would pull him out of the lineup. Hopefully he isn’t injured.

  177. Henry says:

The Nuge played a great game. Despite the giveaway on goal two, so did Hemsky. Like he usually does when Matty trades him.

    Something to build on.

  178. Nuckout says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

I agree, but there may come a point this season where he comes to a definitive crossroads if he cannot produce. I don’t fully believe the rumours that he is a problem child in the dressing room, but there is a disconnect somewhere. He’s clearly having issues getting in line.

When he’s benched for the last 10 AND ot, vs. Florida no less, Eakins has no confidence in his game.

  179. Lowetide says:

Great, can they put him back at center now and move Gagner over so Smyth doesn’t end up having to take draws?

I know Arcobello had two goals tonight, but I’d really rather see Gagner’s defensive prowess put into effect on the wing than down the middle.

    jp,

But he is who we think he is, it’s just that he is out of shape due to his injury. An offensively gifted center who is poor defensively and bad on the dot.

I don’t think we agree on who we think he is.

Gifted offensively for sure, but there’s still hope for the other aspects of his game. He’s been better defensively (or at least been part of lines playing tough opposition and breaking even) in the past, and he did make it to 47.6% in the dot in 11-12. Maybe he’ll never do those things again, but I’d be willing to keep him around in hopes he does.

    D:
Can we just stick a fork in Dubnyk at this point? He isn’t an NHL playoff goalie.

It looks like he’s doing all he can to avoid proving himself the playoffs. I want to believe he can be the guy, but he’s making it awfully difficult. It’s a shame because a replacement goalie is going to cost a pretty penny (likely both in assets and dollars).

Even in the absolute best case where Arcobello ultimately sticks around as 2C I don’t think we can expect a 20 goal season.

Arcobello has a 9.3 SH% over his last 2 AHL seasons (39 goals on 421 shots). Is that admissible as evidence his shot is just okay, not good?

  186. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Can’t find anything on Chase, but it does look like he isn’t playing

injury or illness is my best guess.

  187. Hockeyman 99 says:

    jp,

I understand holding out hope for his game to round out but I think Yak is a better bet to keep if you have to move someone. They have holes in net and the blue that can’t be solved without giving something up and I think he is the logical choice to move. No? Or we stand pat and draft our way out of this in 3 more years.

  188. Nuckout says:

Arcobello has a terrible shot, but I like how that second PP unit in OT showed the kids how it is done.

They got some traffic in front of the net and shot the puck. That’s the magic to a good PP and even strength scoring too for that matter.

Hopefully the kids will figure it out at some point. When the games get tight near the end of the season and playoffs, dirty goals are sometimes the only ones you get.
