STARS AT OILERS G20, 13-14

In a season that has seen the dubious and the depressing, the Edmonton Oilers need the unsustainable and the perverse: they need hope. And they need it now.

COFFEE IS FOR CLOSERS glen1

I subscribe to the law of contrary public opinion: if everyone thinks one thing, then I say, bet the other way. Every swinging Dick is trying to bury this team, the news stories break hourly and they’re all bad. The team can’t cover breakfast, let alone the center standing in front of the net. The phenom’s are fuming, the coaches are wincing and the goalies want to call the whole thing off.

I used to play roto baseball. What a hell town that is, your closer ruins at least 30 nights of summer every year and your bats are hot in April and dead on arrival in May. It’s a dog’s life, and chances are the men you’re up against spend their days and nights plotting your demise and laughing at your $20 pitching staff. I learned one thing playing roto baseball: when your good players are going badly, things will turn north. When your team is high in the rockies, trade those suckers because it’s going to be a blue day tomorrow and you’re going to wonder why you’re down here wasting your time with such bums.

THE LEADS ARE WEAK

glen2Get mad! You son of a bitches! You’re getting kicked around North America and your interviews after the game are depressing one million cold mo-fo’s in good old Your Town, Canada. I know the standings hate you and the other teams mock you and apparently you’re not good enough to get traded, but piss on that noise. You’re better than that–you ARE better than that! Strap on your strap-on and get out there dammit!

This problem isn’t just yours–everyone is to blame! MacT–he saw Gagner go down, knew the Nuge was hurt, and then claimed Steve MacIntyre and Luke Gazdic–but no center! Eakins didn’t give himself enough options in his roster makeup and is making curious lineup/line choices. It isn’t all on you, but tonight we’re healthy and at home and a win can put all that crap behind us!

ALWAYS BE CLOSING!

glen3When you die, you’re gonna regret the things you don’t do. This is it, boys! Tonight’s the night things start getting better! The Horcoff is in town and he’s got those crazy eyes and a brand new plan. You gonna let him run your show? Get in there, head on a swivel, let ‘em know you’re there! AIDA! Break!

 COREY POWER POTTERPLAYpotter5

Pottery barn is back in town, replacing Taylor Fedun who heads to Oklahoma. I have no idea if he’ll play, here’s what we saw at practice yesterday for lines:

  • Nuge-Perron-Eberle
  • Gagner-Hall-Hemsky
  • Arcobello-Smyth-Yakupov
  • Gordon-Jonesuu-Jones

I’d say we might see Gagner moved down the depth chart and Arcobello and Gordon moved up, but we’ll have to wait and see. At least they have enough penalty-killers to roll three pairs now (Dennis King has been trumpeting this for some time).

BUNZ MASTER

bunz fergusonTyler Bunz has done exactly nothing so far as a pro (he’s not alone–the Oilers have several players from the 2010 and 2011 drafts who were good juniors and pro flops) but he’s been very good in a very short sample size with the Barons.

  • Game 1 .857
  • Game 2 .944
  • Game 3 .944
  • Overall: 3, 2.07 .937

This is of course crazy early. However, this is a goaltender who has been mediocre in 40 ECHL games and his first two AHL contests. His final season in the WHL, Bunz .921 sp ranked second overall (behind Ty Rimmer) and he was also second overall in the previous season.

HALL, THE VOICE OF REASON

hall and yak common

The Yakupov story held sway yesterday and there was some interesting insight into the team dynamic. One fascinating quote:

  • Taylor Hall: “He had a lot of leeway last year and this year, not as much. Ralph really took a liking to a young European player and Dallas is trying to get him to play the right way. I think once those two things mesh that’s when you’re going to see the player he can be.”
  • More Hall: “It’s not a distraction for us. Last year, he had a great year and this year, he’s struggled a bit. But it’s not like he’s not giving an effort. He knows our system and he tries his best to play within them. Right now it’s not working the way that it can, but we know it will turn around.”
  • More More Hall: “It’s unfortunate his agent had to say those kinds of things … it would probably be easier for Yak if his agent came into town a little bit quieter, but that’s stuff we don’t really think about. We’re trying to get him back on track and I know he will.”

Joanne Ireland article is source here and thanks to ThePeet So for the find. I love this quote, it’s true, it acknowledges the problems, gives us a little insight into the locker room dynamic and expresses some belief in things working out. I  think he’ll captain this team someday. I specifically like his explanation about the change from last year to this–remember the Imlach/Perreault story from the other day? This is trying to get the player into a position where he can defend, and be part of the offense, in a more structured way. I remember hearing the same things about Hemsky so it can be done (Hemsky does a lot of nice things that never get mentioned–zone exits, etc).

TAYLOR HALL ON SHAWN HORCOFF

Shawn_Horcoff_2012

“There were a lot of times in the last four years where Shawn stepped up and said the right thing; really got us back on track. (Andrew Ference) has been a really good captain for us, but it would be nice to have another veteran guy on the team that’s for sure.”

Article is here and I love the quote about another veteran guy. THAT guy could be mentor to Yakupov the way Horcoff was to Yakupov. We should never underestimate the power of a mentor–Oilers have had some gems over the years like Reasoner and Pisani–and that  guy over in the Dallas locker room had a major impact on these kids and their development. I hope people at Rexall cheer him tonight, at least one time. I heart Shawn Horcoff, even in another uniform.

    Lordy.

Why not use Hall as your net presence on the PP with Nuge at the point Eberle and Yak on the half boards.

    Devan Dubnyk sucks.

    That is all.

His career as an OIler is over. If we’re lucky, so is Eakins coaching career.

    Oh Brother. :(

    Petry soft there.

Goodnight, and good luck, Mr. Eakins.

    Who didn’t see that coming?

    Wolfie:
Why not use Hall as your net presence on the PP with Nuge at the point Eberle and Yak on the half boards.

Why not use Joensuu in front instead?

The biggest forward they have, and he cleaned up so much garbage in front of the net during the pre season. This is horrible coaching. Seriously

  14. hunter1909 says:

    Dallas Stars playing…

    Dallas Eakins coaching the Oilers…

Cody Eakins playing for the Stars…

    Think about it.

  15. rich says:

Good comment by Ferraro, sloppy rebound from DD and Petry caught staring at the puck.

    DD

  17. Southern Oil says:

Bench Yakupov. Clearly that was his fault

  18. Andy P says:

Actually facetious comments aside, and as ugly as this is, we are right now paying for Mr Dithers regime. Its like washing that is so dirty you have to cycle it 15 or 20 times.

Eakins is not a failure as a coach, I am still haging onto the 30 game thing before I start actually judging this game.

These boys need a Viagra, Cialis and Ginseng cocktail. They are completely impotent right now.
    30 games…….

  19. pboy says:

Geez, when’s the last time Hemmer has had a good game? He’s been a passenger way to often over last couple of weeks. Sail on…..

  20. SK Oiler Fan says:

WTf was DD doing? Ugly rebound on a weak backhand then no where near square to the puck and not standing tall? First of all there shouldn’t have been a rebound then it should have hit him in the crest. Not NHL goaltending.

  21. russ99 says:

C’mon Eakins, call a time out. Get these guys back in the game.

  22. fuzzy muppet says:

Taylor Hall is good, but dumb as a brick…hit the fucking net and then SHOOT IT WHEN YOU”RE LITERALLY one foot from the crease.

  23. bookje says:

I agree with the philosophy that LT and others have that Eakins should not be fired. But seeing the power play die this year after such promise last year is very very tough to take. This is not goaltending, it’s not turnovers, it’s just a pathetic power play despite having some top skill out there.

  24. Nuckout says:

    hunter1909:
    Dallas Stars playing…

Cody Eakins playing for the Stars…

Think his last name is Eakin.

    Minus the S.

Sorta like Eakins is minus his common sense.

    fuzzy muppet:
    russ99,

they burned that in the first 10 minutes,,,

LOL – missed that, thought it was a TV timeout.

But seriously, it’s one goal, no biggie. If they get their collective heads out of you know where, they’ll score a few tonight.

  27. Nuckout says:

And again, why the fark is Fedun back in the sticks??

  28. G Money says:

Second wheel. PP goal coming up

  29. VanOil says:

Surprised we are hearing no rumors of Tambellini joining Buffalo. He is a recently fired GM with a track record of securing the #1 overall pick.

  30. russ99 says:

BTW – MacT has too much invested in Eakins. The assistants will go before Eakins will.

Sadly, that should have happened a few weeks ago.

What’s Paul Maurice up to? Surely he could help Eakins right now.

  31. Andy P says:

    russ99,

    You mean his задницу?

  32. fuzzy muppet says:

Wow, look at a PP that actually has players SKATING. They get chances…who’da thunk???

  33. RexLibris says:

    Much better defense.

Good picks, pressuring the player just as he’s getting the puck.

So that’s one half of the ice. Now about that offensive zone…

  34. Wolfie says:

Joensuu might be OK on the PP but I’d prefer getting guys out there who have a history of being able to put the puck in the net. It seems like they’re waiting for RNH to make the perfect pass for anything to develop. They end up looking static because everything funnels back to RNH on the right side. Maybe move him up top. He has that sneaky shot and can distribute to either side equally well. If you have a shooting threat on each side like Yak and Eberle you keep the PK guessing. That 5th guy could be Perron or Smyth or Joensuu. RNH still handles the puck a ton and he doesn’t have to pass through sticks.

  35. russ99 says:

Good PK. The defensive effort is there tonight, but we’re all over the place on offense.

  36. Lucinius says:

Personally, I’m very close to being done with this team.

    It is badly coached.
    It is badly managed.
And the players, by and large, don’t care or don’t know how to play NHL hockey.

At this point I’m basically hoping the Oilers trade the players I like to decent teams so I can stop watching.

  37. Henry says:

    hunter1909:
I hate to say this but I’m cheering for the Stars. I want to hear boos as they skate off the ice at the end of the game.

Come on! This is the best of all possible worlds!

  38. pboy says:

    russ99:
BTW – MacT has too much invested in Eakins. The assistants will go before Eakins will.

Sadly, that should have happened a few weeks ago.

What’s Paul Maurice up to? Surely he could help Eakins right now.

Buchberger has been retained even though he’s part of his 4th coaching regime. He isn’t going anywhere unless he’s given the Head Coaching job. Seriously.

  39. RexLibris says:

Nice defensive play by Larsen coming back there.

  40. VanOil says:

@markhmasters: Carlyle thinks Kadri ejection was bad call; Wild’s Coyle says it represents what needs to be taken out of the game

@jonasTSN1050: Carlyle says Kadri “made initial contact with the shoulder” and “didn’t have his arms up and he ran into the player.”

Man, I live in East Van and I can’t access drugs that good. Toronto must be mixing up LSD with FLU shots.

  41. hunter1909 says:

At the start of the game it was a game for either team to win or lose, but as the game draws on the Stars are starting to believe in themselves. Eakin’s Eejits on the other hand…

Did you watch much when guys like Shaun Van Allen and Mats Lindgren were considered the next generation of Oilers hockey?

If you can live through that you can live through pretty much anything.

  43. RexLibris says:

This is usually where one of the kids tries too hard and ends up causing a bad turnover that eventually gets blamed on Dubnyk.

Or at least it says so in the Oilers game day script.

When Rob Ford is your mayor you can bet it ain’t fluoride their putting in the water. Unbelievable.

  45. pboy says:

Jim Nill would have been a smart hire here. I guess he never shared a bus with the right guys.

Eakins showed some emotion behind the bench. Must have been a mistake.

I can’t recall a coach ever agreeing with a call against.

But, yea… both of those hits were really problematic. Kadri plays on the Oil he doesn’t see ice again for a while.

  49. Lucinius says:

    RexLibris,

    I did, yes. I’ve missed maybe 4 games between ’86 and ’12.

Past two seasons alone I’ve willingly skipped more than 15 games because this team is just bad. Its bad everywhere. Ownership, management, pro scouting, coaching, assistant coaching, players.

    Just bad.

Even its stars, like Hall, seem to have bought into the loser mentality that pervades the organization.

and when we Draft 1st in june thats another 4 million dollar forward.

  52. fuzzy muppet says:

I just realized the oilers have made it past the 1st round of the playoffs ONCE IN FIFTEEN YEARS(they made it to the playoff twice in ELEVEN)

put this team out of it’s misery.

  53. G Money says:

Q: How incompetent an officiating crew do you have to be to miss the puck going into the netting for several seconds, clearly *lose sight of the puck for several seconds*, and still not blow the play dead?

    A: NHL.

  54. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Brackenburied: When Rob Ford is your mayor you can bet it ain’t fluoride their putting in the water. Unbelievable.

The actual campaign to get fluoride out of Toronto’s water is pretty weak and rightly ignored by most.

Lately, they’ve been on talk radio ever so often.

  55. hunter1909 says:

Oilers play anti-hockey, not hockey. They’re like aliens who come from another dimension where everything’s mirror image, and they think the way to play the game is to treat the puck like a grenade. Everything’s .5 seconds too fast with these berks.

  56. Genjutsu says:

    N. Schultz is putting together a fine season on terrible team. If he keeps this up that should have value at the deadline.

Those refs gave the Oilers 5 straight power plays.

  58. fuzzy muppet says:

    Genjutsu,

So then what? Trade him for a draft pick and don’t replace him with actual NHL talent. Sounds like an Oilers thing to do.

  61. Thor762 says:

I really don’t know what is sadder. The state of this oilers team? Or the fact that I have nothing better to do tonight than watch it?

  62. G Money says:

I know – I’m sure they’ll face discipline from the league after the game.

Not to be the conspiracy homer, but I wonder if Larionov has motivation to steer Yak’s aspirations to the K.

Call me crazy, but I can see that coming about.

  65. Romulus Apotheosis says:

This is interesting. front page on tsn:

“Catch the NHL on TSN as Tyler Seguin and the Dallas Stars visit Edmonton to take on Jordan Eberle and the Oilers.”

TSN and Eberle are like some kind of cross-merchandising love affair.

  66. icecastles says:

fuzzy muppet: Yup the Vets will be sold off and rebuild 2.0 begins. Playoffs or bust (2020′s slogan)

I don’t know if I want the option of ‘bust’ in any slogan pertaining to the Oilers.

“I don’t know what the problem is. My sergeant always said lead, follow, or get out of the way, so I got out of the way.” – Idiocracy

  67. hunter1909 says:

Eakins comes across like a tinhorn who’s rode into town shooting off his big mouth, and now that everything’s falling apart it’s going to come down to either being run out of town on a rail, or tar and feathers.

  68. Pablo Aimar says:

If this score holds they will be 4-14-2. Now, you can’t fire the coach because he is clearly not the problem (and is awesome) and you surely can’t trade any of the elite talent like Gagner and Eberle. So what are the options? I don’t know but I am sure Mac T will come up with one. He is one smart dude.

  69. Nuckout says:

hunter1909: Eakins comes across like a tinhorn who’s rode into town shooting off his big mouth, and now that everything’s falling apart it’s going to come down to either being run out of town on a rail, or tar and feathers.

Just wait until next year, Eakins will have it together.

    Ha. Ha. Bwahahaha.. LOL.

  70. RexLibris says:

    Lucinius,

    I can certainly empathize.

I think part of this comes down to the fact that the fans were sold a bill of goods. And now we are expecting reciprocation. That things appear to be going backwards is creating all kinds of questions: questions of misplaced faith, misplaced or betrayed loyalties, doubt in the system, resentment and anger directed towards the players, frustration with the coaching staff…

The cracks in the dam aren’t isolated, they are everywhere and fans are losing their shift.

I wish I knew what could be done to change it, but all I can say is that this entire franchise is trying like heck to get better and all appearances are to the contrary.

I’ll never stop cheering, but I’m getting a little less emotionally attached every day.

  71. OilBuzz says:

One of my all-time favourite quotes.

  74. Genjutsu says:

    Wolfie,

I think they’ll want to try the Bomb! in that spot by then or if not Marincin.

  75. Alsker says:

Time to make the Philly deal, Holmgrem owes us for showing up with our F+ game and ignited his team. As long as 89 is involved we make any deal that brings us some heart and makes room for Yak/Ebs/Hall/Perron to play top 6. Even if we need to move one of these as well.

  76. hags9k says:

What is the opposite of loosey goosey? It’s how the Oilers have played all year. Everyone seems tentative and scared to make mistakes. It’s led to countless bad passes and a lot of flat feet as they get stuck in “processing mode”. Zero flow. Yak is the poster boy but it’s all of these guys.

I’m a MacT fan but Eakins has a full on train wreck going right now. There’s no sugar coating it. I know we can’t have the inmates in charge and all that but I’d send him packing and circle the wagons one more time. This new system could take gord only knows how long to figure out if ever and we are burning up Hall’s contract.

Let me just say that obviously Klowe should step down first and foremost but it’s been said so many times I’m tired and we all know it will never happen, so I’m moving down the blame ladder.

Why does Dairy Queen have to try and re-invent the wheel? Over thinking it, just use what works for other clubs. Cheese and rice.

Dubie stop the puck already ok?

  77. Hockeyman 99 says:

Watching the replay of the goal I can’t understand why DD puts down his stick when he is tall enough to straighten up and have his shoulders cover the top of the net. I think thats the 3rd or 4th goal he has given up like that. Sigh.

Bucky and Smith. They should have been gone before the season anyway. Hopefully Lowe follows them out the door. Not holding my breath.

Anyone in Calgary wanna buy my Oiler tickets this weekend? I honestly don’t want to go.

  79. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Kharia with an assist. Everett up 5-3 in the 3rd.

  80. Lucinius says:

    RexLibris,

I want this team to be good. I really do. I just have no faith in it. MacT hasn’t been what was hoped. Eakins has made a surprising number of decisions that reek of stupidity. Whichever assistant coach is in charge of the special teams should be fired, out-right. Pro scouting has been horrendous for the Oilers for years. And not just 2-4. Something like 7, more like.

Then you have the players. The players either do not care or hate the systems being foisted upon them to such a degree that they are struggling to make themselves conform to it. If its the former you’re simply fucked. If its the latter you either make a few personnel adjustments with the players or you change the god damn system (which, honestly? While better than Krueger’s, defensively, looks to be pretty bad, imo).

I haven’t even touched on goaltending because, quite simply the OIlers are DOA when it comes to goaltending this season.

  81. Pablo Aimar says:

    OilBuzz,

    nah, couldn’t be.

  82. G Money says:

    Two Dal goals coming up.

  83. Hockeyman 99 says:

Thanks horc you saved a goal

  84. Nuckout says:

I made this comment about 7 or 8 losses ago, but Eakins doesn’t strike me as Mr. Motivation there at all.

So, when your team is down by a goal, mistakes are being made, and you just blew a golden 5-3 chance, as a coach, do you:

    a) Get fired up, go all Any Given Sunday on your players, discuss strategy to win puck battles and get more shots, and instill some confidence and sense of purpose;

    b) Scream, yell, call players out, and toss a few water bottles, maybe hit Corey Potter in the face by accident;

    c) Quietly reassure your players that the system will eventually work itself out, give a few “it’s going to be ok” type comments, and pray. pray hard;

    d) Not go into the room at all, and hope to hell your “captain” sorts it out.

What do you think Eakins choice would be?

  85. Hockeyman 99 says:

I imagine once we have last place sewn up the boys will start scoring 8 a game to get there bonuses.

  86. G Money says:

Haha Dal watching Edm too much, bad habits rubbing off!

  87. Andy P says:

That Larsen is as strong as an ox.

  88. Romulus Apotheosis says:

what a great game of hockey.

    45,000 penalties, 7 total shots, 1 goal.

    entertainment!

  89. hags9k says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

This is end to end as in when will it end and please make it end.

  90. Hockeyman 99 says:

I gave the tickets to this game to two sets of customers as a thank-you for their support. I wonder if they will keep shopping in my store.

  91. Lowetide says:

Arcobello can play on my team any day.

  92. Andy P says:

Извините ребята, я просто не могу стоять, чтобы посмотреть это больше.

  93. Lowetide says:

Ferraro makes mention again of Belov’s fine play.

  94. G Money says:

    At least Arco still cares.

  95. pboy says:

Ryan Smyth is playing his ass off tonight.

  96. Lucinius says:

How anyone can put Gagner as 2C instead of Arcobello, based on results this year, baffles me to no end. Arcobello hasn’t just out-played Gagner, he’s out-played him badly. One of many ‘wtf?’ decisions by Eakins.

  97. Brackenburied says:

    Lowetide:
Ferraro makes mention again of Belov’s fine play.

    I’ve liked Ferarro’s game tonite.

  98. Ripoux says:

Only problem with a close game like this, down 1 goal, the ex-Oiler hasn’t had his goal yet. So we actually need a deuce.

  99. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    A couple of notes:

    1) Gagner is a winger. Let’s acknowledge this and move on.

    2) Dallas has Benn taking the draws for Seguin. Can Hall do this for RNH?

  100. Logan91 says:

IMO Gordon deserves to be playing on a better line

  101. hunter1909 says:

    Hockeyman 99:

are there any free agents next year who would fill our needs.

  103. Romulus Apotheosis says:

And Everett gives up a 2 goal lead in the 3rd to lose in OT. because oilers.

  107. SK Oiler Fan says:

89 had a 0 for 5 for puck battles on that shift.

  108. Brackenburied says:

Have the Jones’ even played this game?

  109. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    God Bless you 94.

  110. Ribs says:

Darn! I really though Smytty’s slapper from the circle would go in. *eyeroll*

  111. Southern Oil says:

    G Money: All of them.

Quote of the night. Give the man his prize.

  112. G Money says:

I love how Mazda has the unmitigated gall to compare the Mazda 6 to the introduction of the Fosbury Flop and the electric guitar.

  113. OilBuzz says:

That was a tired man’s shot.

  114. Ripoux says:

In terms of effort, the Oilers cannot be faulted tonight. They are capable of grinding it out. Chances
    Haw been there.

  115. G Money says:

“A draw won by Gagner” – WTF?

  116. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

    thanks

    Maybe Thornton

  117. SK Oiler Fan says:

Smyth, Gordon, ARCO, Belov, Shultz, Larsen good tonight. Everybody else average to bad

  118. icecastles says:

I’m going to predict no free appetizer from Japanese Village tonight.

  119. fuzzy muppet says:

    Hockeyman 99,

You think anyone wants to be part of this shitshow??

  120. Hockeyman 99 says:

DD best game of the year and we can’t get 1.

  121. Hockeyman 99 says:

    fuzzy muppet,

    money talks

  122. Rebilled says:

    yep

  123. fuzzy muppet says:

    well that’s a terrible call…

  124. fuzzy muppet says:

    Hockeyman 99,

You’ll have to pay double the going rate…

  125. G Money says:

Bogus penalty shot, Dubie prevented that shot, not Belov. Good on ya Dubie.

  126. OilBuzz says:

    Awesome poke check, great save

  127. Lucinius says:

Of all the problems the Oilers have, the lack of offense is the most pathetic. This is a team that should not struggle to score this much. And that rests heavily on its best players (Hall, RNH, Eberle, Yak, Hemsky, Perron).

  128. PunkInDrublic says:

30 years as an Oiler fan and I’ve never felt so hopeless. Call me in 2014 or after there is a major trade. This team and management needs an enema (again). BRUTAL.

Even if it’s only one game, I’d love to see a completely empty barn, just to make the statement to Katz. F this team.

  129. Lucinius says:

    Well done, Hall.. well done.

  130. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Taylor to Tyler

  131. hunter1909 says:

its a a dark dark comedy this

  134. Well Oiled and Enthusiastic says:

Mailed it in. Dubnyk was solid. Another porcelain steamer. The darkest of days.

  135. G Money says:

Wow, that is so symbolic of this season …

  136. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Oh Eakins

  137. russ99 says:

    The Oilers, we’re Pred-a-tastic!

  138. icecastles says:

Christ, Petry should at least get an assist on that play.

  139. Pablo Aimar says:

Wow. Can you imagine having to pay to watch this shit? How much more are the fans here going to take?

  140. OilBuzz says:

This is fucking disgusting. I feel like they deserve to lose every game 10-0. This may be the lowest point the Oilers have ever sunk to.

  141. Ribs says:

Dubnyk didn’t meet his 4GA quota. Whip him to the bone!

  142. Romulus Apotheosis says:

    well, that happened.

out of the saddle for draisaitl.

  143. fuzzy muppet says:

    BlackJacque was the smart one..

They have to move a kid and bring in someone else, it’s the only thing they haven’t done. This dynamic sucks and it’s not going to change.

and for the love of Gord: STOP BUYING TICKETS

  144. Lucinius says:

    Pablo Aimar,

Well, I can tell you this.. I won’t be renewing my subscription to hockeystreams.com when it runs out in January, unless Hemsky and/or Yakupov get traded to a team I can stomach watching )so they’ll probably get traded to Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Minnesota, Pittsburgh or Montreal).

  145. Southern Oil says:

That was Yakupov’s fault – bench him!

  146. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Mad for Ekblad. :)

  156. lance says:

Well I gotta say, I’ve watched almost no games this year, but it seemed to me that they competed pretty hard for the first, some of the second, and then the last ten of the third.

Those tries can win games. Tonight it wasn’t embarrassing for me. I saw a few good passes even. One gem from Yak at least.

I think Hitchcock said that you can tell you’re near the end of a slump when you are playing well enough to win. tonight may have been that game.

  157. fuzzy muppet says:

    Hockeyman 99,

They don’t have to go. Empty seats speak volumes

  158. Gerta Rauss says:

    Watching this team is exhausting.

I’m not sure where we go from here.

  159. Nuckout says:

I remember being pretty young in the mid-late 80′s and going to an autograph session at WEM. and MacT, Lowe, Mess, Gretz, and I think Fuhr signed one if those mini sticks for me. I found the stick about a week ago in a box… the only names still legible are MacT and Lowe.

I vomited a bit in my mouth.

    True Story.

They won’t win sweet FA until they realize that’s how they have to play from start to finish. Not one period here, part of a period there.

I give Yak a pass on that. And the others who tried: Arco, Smyth, Belov, Gordon.

The rest of the team? If they haven’t learned yet …

  163. bookje says:

What are the next steps from the GM handbook?

I presume waiting on Bryzgalov is one thing.

Trading a key player like Eberle or Yak for 3 Gordon type players?

I am totally confused. This team is playing like the team that got MacT fired. He said at the time that the players were ‘uncoachable’ and that is the message we are getting again, but this time it is about a totally different set of players, many of whom we know are sublime talents.

When I put my brain to work on this, I think the team was fragile to start the season and they lost a lot of games to goal-tending. During that period of losses, they lost the connection between team and coach. And now, nothing is working. That 5 on 3 power play was telling.

I don’t think the solution is firing the coach, but if I could go back in time, I would keep Krueger and bring in an X and Os guy to assist him as well as new assistant coaches (Kruger noted that Bucky and Steve didn’t really know what they were doing and that he tried to do everything himself).

I could be totally wrong – Its hard to know at this point.

  164. wordbird says:

    Lowetide:
    1992-93.

Naw, back then the team may have been terrible, but we were all blindly optimistic that Sather would turn it around and the Oilers would be great again in a few years. Now we know, we could be decades away from being relevant.

  175. russ99 says:

    Hockeyman 99,

That was 25 years ago, and nobody should be resting on 25 year old laurels.

    Glass half-empty: what he said.

  179. bookje says:

Lowetide: Fire an assistant, bring in a former head coach to “help”

That may be the best option. When Sutter hired his brother in Calgary, I said it was too much Sutter, not enough diversity of approach/thought. I wonder if MacT and Eakins have the same problem. Another senior coach might help give them some different tools than they currently have to solve the issue.

  180. russ99 says:

    Hockeyman 99,

    We all do.

  181. Hockeyman 99 says:

    russ99,

As a Coach and GM they had us 1 game from #6.

  182. G Money says:

Lowetide: Fire an assistant, bring in a former head coach to “help”

People will say this is a band-aid, or a desperation move, and maybe it is. But something needs to happen and no way replacing Smith and Bucky with experienced NHL coaches hurts. No way.

I mean FFS – how does a pair of assistant coaches survive FIVE lottery finishes and FOUR different head coaches? How? They may not be the problem, but s*re as shit they’re not the solution.

  183. Ripoux says:

To me, it’s like golf. I never seem to get all my game together at once. Driving, short game, putting, pick one, it goes better than others. But when I can put two together, wow, some personal bests can happen. Three together at once? Well, never happen for me personally on the course, but in an alalogous sense , could be scary for Oil opponents.

I think that’s where the Oil are. New swing coach and caddie. More reps needed. They played a solid defensive game. I think. That’s a positive.

  184. Bag of Pucks says:

This team epitomizes the phrase “coach killer.”

Proud to be a 2nd tier fan tonight. Not nearly masochistic enough to consider going ‘top tier’

Would imagine paying to watch this team is a bit like paying for sex…albeit with less professionalism and more shame.

  185. hunter1909 says:

bookje: Now we know, we could be decades away from being relevant.

Lowe’s proven that it’s possible to draft 1st 3 years in a row and still have the worst team in the NHL.

After eight years soon to be out of the playoffs, that’s an achievement.

  186. Romulus Apotheosis says:

Put everyone’s name in a hat and fire every 3rd guy, offer their jobs to every 3rd person in the door.

  187. lance says:

The rest of the team?If they haven’t learned yet …

If that shot from Eberle went in mid way through the first, and Ganje didn’t ring the bar on the 3×6 hole, it was a 2 – 0 game. Further, that was an outstanding shot by Peverley to win it.

There was one? five bell chance against, the d coverage was pretty good for the whole game, and while the forwards still can’t consistently pass the puck amongst themselves, the team was in it the whole way. I don’t know that they need to be playing SCF hockey for the whole 60 minutes, they certainly had the chances tonight to win.

it wasn’t like the Ottawa game. That to me was totally unwatchable. IMO, this was miles better.

  188. Nuckout says:

Hockeyman 99: Nuckout, What ever is wrong with the team now those guys helped bring 5 cups to edmonton.

It really is starting to boil down to a couple of key factors, and factor number one is Eakins is way over his head. He looks defeated, embarrassed, and I’m sure he’s longing for his happier times with the Marlies.

I have never seen an NHL coach hang his head in shame that many times in one game. He’s cooked.

  189. Nuckout says:

    Link for youtube postgame, anyone?

  190. Rebilled says:

I’ve always wondered if the plan was to blow up this team.

    No?

    Hall = lots

    Eberle = a lot

    Nuge = they won’t

    Yak = a lot

    No?

A balanced roster based on picks.

  191. fuzzy muppet says:

    Bag of Pucks,

They didnt have to kill the last coach. The GM did that…i think its safe to say that may have not been the brightest move.

  192. Hockeyman 99 says:

    Nuckout,

someone might think he would have more sympathy for Yak being in over his head.

  193. Bag of Pucks says:

  198. G Money says:

lance: it wasn’t like the Ottawa game. That to me was totally unwatchable. IMO, this was miles better.

    I admire your optimism.

The problem is that we’ve seen this team come up with decent efforts before and find ways to lose. The script gets old fast when it doesn’t change after 20 games.

Yeah, maybe if the Dubie of last season is back – 1 GA! .958 sv%! 2nd star! – that will rebuild some of the teams fragile confidence, and maybe they’ll stop holding their sticks so tight, and that will result in some goals and some wins, and bam! Hall explodes! a Yak-trick! RNH has an 8-point game! And we’ll finally see a team that’s fun to watch and that isn’t an automatic two points for the other team every night.

Think I might be too tired to invest the time watching the games.

Glass half-empty: I bought tickets to the Oil-Flamer game this Saturday.
Glass half-full: I’m in Calgary, other than Saturday, I don’t *have* to pay attention to the Oilers if I don’t want to.

  199. Nuckout says:

    Romulus Apotheosis,

Cheers, looking forward to hearing the excuses.

Really doesn’t matter who the coach is when the lineup’s overflowing with periphery players who don’t check. Where’s Orval Tessier when you need him? This team truly is in need of a heart transplant.
