GO GO BARONS!!!!

I’m not even sure who plays in the uniforms anymore, but the Barons are my AHL team (stop it) and they’re in a playoff race. I think they’re screwed, but let’s see if they can do it!

CURRENT STANDINGS

ahl playoff race

Ten games left in the season, two teams to climb over and half your roster either looking for work up in Alberta or in the Mash unit. Lordy. The Edmonton Oilers as an organization are a day late and a dollar short on damn near everything, why should their AHL team be any different?

Rockford vs. Barons 2-28-14Curtis Hamilton is going to get some playing time, since Mark Arcobello and Roman Horak are out (Kale Kessy too). Jim Byers is a wonderful play by play guy and snaps out great pre-game notes too (here). Listen here, if we get visual it’ll be posted in the comments section.

    Who is this other Miller?

How is it that C. Hamilton is stuck on the 4th line on this decimated team?

Why are the D above the Fs?

John Quennville playing for the Wheat Kings looks like and interesting prospect. Listed as a C, decent size and stats including PIM’s. Have seen him projected around the middle of the 2nd round. Too bad the Oilers don’t currently have a pick in that range.

Who was the unknown NHL commentator who used to always say, “Cogliano on his horse,” when he played for the Oilers?

  12. Oilanderp says:

Checkers seems to have a few former Oiler minor-leaguers (i think Marquardt and Cornet). They also seem to have a guy last name Jordan (first name Michael I think) who plays with a Staal, all of course with Carolina Hurricane logos on their shoulders. It’s all so confusing.

  13. Evilas says:

    Mr DeBakey,

Next year they will start to infiltrate the Barons.

What happened to Ryan Hamilton, I thought he was going to be the big vet scorer that the Barons seem to always have in their line-up…..

Dillon Simpson has looked good so far for UND against Ferris State. Calm feet, blocked at least 5 shots, makes a good first pass, very solid positionally and playing big minutes.

Don’t see him beating out Nurse Klefbom Marincin Schultz Petry (Ekblad) Gernat and Maybe Belov a couple good years with the Barons could maybe get him on the oilers roster but my bet is that he is traded.

Toronto loses, oddsmakers put their playoff hopes at 13%. I’d sure love to see Detroit with a playoff berth this year, as people have been calling their demise for 3 or 4 years now. What a fabulous organization.

How about “your professional hockey career is on the line, play for your next contract”?

BTW, Miller now has 7 pts in his last 10 games. Maybe they give him a go next year.

with a lot of usage help, Willis’ fenwick numbers saw Miller really good when he was running them.

I think they re-up him, but may want an AHL only deal.

Should be Yakimov, Khaira, Moroz joining the forward group next year (maybe McCarron), but as we’ve seen.. you can’t have enough warm bodies down there and they’ll certainly lose a few cats.

    R. Hamilton has basically been fighting injury from day one.

Him and Joensuu are a pair of contracts I bet MacT stares at wondering why the hell he gave them a second year.

    Rookie GM stuff.

  33. sliderule says:

Joensuu was an oiler pro scouting gem as Mact mentioned that he had never seen him play.

Hamilton would have been Eakins recommendation.

MacT signed them both to two year deals regardless of where they came from.

  35. admiralmark says:

    sliderule,

Oilers Pro scouting will ultimately doom this franchise. The inability to make astute pick ups through free agency and trades is critical to filling in the drafting holes and sustain competitiveness. Looking at the last 4-5 years of recommended players by way of the pro scouts is somewhat frightening for the most part.

What would that mean for next year?

could he still go back to Jr.? would it burn a year off his ELC?

An ATO isn’t an ELC, it just allows Chase to play out the year in OKC. But even if EDM signed Chase to an ELC, his contract would slide if he was in the AHL the rest of this year.

…performance vs a really good Calgary team…17 points in 6gp! Dictated every aspect of the game when he was on the ice. Hockey Sense..wow

The Oilers need to sign a couple of veteran bigger 3rd liners who can play and chip in offence. Reinhart would look good with the young guns

I am very happy to hear this, I hope he is echoing what MacT and co. think. If they have the chance they have to take Reinhart.

Corey Pronman said Reinhart would have gone #4 or #5 in 2013 draft.

  44. flyfish1168 says:

Sam is 6’1″ may grow a little more. He is already 183 should easily get to 200 plus pounds. He is only 18 and won’t be 19 until November. So he won’t be small. But he won’t be Getzlaf or Thornton size.

Griffin is 6’4″ 202 lbs at 20 yrs old 3 months

  45. Lois Lowe says:

I can’t see anyone taking Draisaitl over Reinhart, and as the playoffs move forward I can’t see anyone (aside from the Oilers) taking Ekblad 1OV.

  46. gogliano says:

I can’t see anyone not taking Reinhart #1 overall at this point.

NYI won again tonight.Looks likeCAL or NYI are both clear. Leaving us with either a 18.8% chance or a 14.2% chance of picking #1.Failing a lottery win, they probably take one of Ekblad or Draisatl.Though there is still a non-negligible chance that (a) we finish 28th (b) we get bumped to 4th Overall selection and (c) the 3 top choices are Reinhart, Drais, Ekblad.

But taking Reinhart solves the center spot for this team for as long as RNH and Reinhart want to stay on it.I doubt they pass on that given2C is as big a whole on the team as D.

The talent might not be as elite this year but we lucked out in that all top 4 choices fill a prospect need going forward.

Hamilton has a two way contract that will pay him $300K next year. No cap hit.

Joensuu will make $1M next year. A $900K cap hit.

There is no reason why either can’t be waived and farmed out.

Oh yea. neither is a major issue. and, JJ may still help the bottom 5 next year. I still think we don’t know what he is considering the injuries.

But, they’re far from ideal signings. And, I hope MacT learned not to give such marginal players an extra year if he can avoid it.

It’s possible Reinhardt could push RNH down the the second line. Given where his offence is trending, that may not be a bad thing.

It’s never too early to push your players or prospects down the river for the Next Big Thing.

    In other news, Pitlick injured…again.

Apparently minor and likely to play tonight, but all the same, tough sledding for the young man.

  53. RexLibris says:

Looking at the Leafs this last little while, I can’t help but have flashbacks to the pre-lockout OIlers.

Just enough hope to keep things interesting, then the ultimate heartbreak followed by one last desperate push into the promised land to make one believe that maybe next year things will be different.

    Purgatory. It really stinks.

Pitlick is probable for tonight the last I heard.

  55. RexLibris says:

    Woodguy,

Yeah, I read that in Willis’ piece, and included mention of it in the comment to account for the fact that we don’t know if it is a minor strain or a bigger thing he is just playing through.

I’ve noticed he seems more conservative this time around than last. Last time it was actually funny watching him play because it was like he was seeing the ice like the coach’s whiteboard and if they lost possession he’d go to some spot that Eakins must have marked. Like an actor, he was hitting his mark with almost comical consistency. This time I haven’t seen the same behaviour and he looks almost like someone afraid to give up a chance or uncertain of how aggressively he should be forechecking.

I know Eakins has said he needs Pitlick to play with a little more offensive assertiveness. Which is interesting because when I first heard that comment I was immediately reminded of what Eakins said about Hall a short while back in that perhaps the coaching staff needed to loosen the reins on him a bit and just let him play.

Rookie coach learning to work with rookie players. Not an easy road, but I’m naturally predisposed to looking on the positive side of educational experiences, so I’ll watch for encouraging returns.

Seriously? Do you think he just gave them an extra year out of the kindness of his heart and he’s learned that maybe that’s a bad idea? Come on. Harping on MacT for the Hamilton signing is just crazy, so lets be fair. He’s a player that scored at a 40g pace last year in the AHL, is known as a leader, and provides toughness and he’s signed to a 2 way contract, perfect for the AHL team (if he was healthy). Yes, he’s had an injury filled year, but so what? That could happen to anyone.

To get people to sign, sometimes (most of the time) you have to offer them more years than would be ideal. Fact of life. 95% of signings are not going to be ‘ideal’.
