ISLANDERS AT OILERS, G64 13-14

After one of the more difficult days of Oiler fandom in recent history, we can move on to the next mind-blowing horror. The deadline past, we can focus on the offseason after a quick look back at yesterday.

TRADE DEADLINE VALUE TABLE

  • Ales Hemsky: First-round draft pick (or a second and a fourth). **third and a fifth**
  • Nick Schultz: A third round pick. **fifth round pick**
  • Ilya Bryzgalov: A fourth round pick. **correctly predicted value**

It was a weird deadline for value (Dustin Penner for a fourth, Nick Schultz and Mike Weaver both fetching fifths), and that 2015 third-round pick might end up looking more like a second rounder by the time things roll out. However, I’d say the overall return on these three veterans should be described as less than expected compared to the going rate during deadline week.

OILERS 2014 DRAFT PICKS

  • #2 overall (first round)
  • #91 overall (fourth round, this is the Bryzgalov return)
  • #116 overall (fourth round, this is the Mike Brown return)
  • #128 overall (fifth round, this is the first pick of the Ales Hemsky return)
  • #136 overall (fifth round, this is the Nick Schultz return)
  • #152 overall (sixth round)
  • #182 overall (seventh round)

Using Central scouting as an estimate, the Oilers draft board might look like this on that warm Saturday night:

  • D Aaron Ekblad
  • D Aaron Irving
  • C Colby Cave
  • G Jonas Johansson
  • C Teemu Lamsa
  • C Mason Blacklock
  • G Justin Paulic

That’s kind of all over the map and the CS list is always wonky, but it’s fun to look at the names and check out their stories. I think they’re taking Ekblad, ladies.

 OILERS 14-15

The deadline is past and we can begin to look forward to the offseason. The talent that might be available to the Oilers to fill holes is more likely to appear via trade than free agency.

SIGNED PLAYERS

  1. Taylor Hall $6M
  2. Jordan Eberle $6M
  3. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins $6M
  4. Sam Gagner $4.8M
  5. David Perron $3.8125M
  6. Boyd Gordon $3M
  7. Matt Hendricks $1.85M
  8. Nail Yakupov $.925M ($2.85M w/bonus)
  9. Andrew Ference $3.25M
  10. Martin Marincin $.730M
  11. Viktor Fasth $2.9M
  12. Ben Scrivens $2.3M

Capgeek has the signed men at $45,507,000 and the payroll estimate is $71M. We’re hearing it won’t be that high, so let’s go with $68M as an estimate for now, and then we’ll be pleasantly surprised if the number is better.

RFA’S AND THEIR ESTIMATES

  1. Luke Gazdic $.700M
  2. Jeff Petry $3.5M
  3. Justin Schultz $4.0M

I’m terrible at these things, but let’s assume the totals are close. We’re up to 15 players (65% of the roster) and $53,707,000 and with some holes to fill. The roster as listed here includes two goalies, four defenders, three centers, four left-wingers and three right-wingers. The shopping list is a #1D, a #2D, a depth D, two centers and one left-winger and two right-wingers. Let’s see if we can find anyone from the in-house UFA’s and the minor leagues to fill these spots.

UFA’S AND MINOR LEAGUE ADDITIONS (VALUE CONTRACTS)

  1. Anton Lander $.800M
  2. Tyler Pitlick $.900M
  3. Oscar Klefbom $.895M

Now we’re up to 18 players (and honestly you could put Arcobello, Horak and Fedun there and it might be better, this is my estimate). The dollar total in my estimate is up to $57,302,000, leaving about $12M for five players: #1D, #2D, 2line C, a 3line L and a 3line R.

TARGETS

  • #1D Brooks Orpik $5.5M

orpik esI know you’re wailing at the computer screen, but this isn’t to argue specific players it’s to see if we can go shopping and find all of the required ingredients on this budget. So, estimating Orpik accepts a long term deal with Edmonton, we can move on with $6.5M left in the budget and four players to go.

  • 3L Dustin Penner $2.3M and Daniel Winnik $2.3M

penner esAgain, let’s not go crazy with names, we’re just trying to make this work within the budget. We’ll tweak the template later. Okay, we’ve given healthy raises to both players and used up the rest of our money. It now stands at 21 players, $66,407,000 and we’re really close to the cap. The final two players (as I’ve broken them down) are #2D and #2C. Let’s list the roster and see if we can find areas to improve.

PROJECTED ROSTER

  1. G Ben Scrivens
  2. G Viktor Fasth
  3. D Brooks Orpik
  4. x (Anton Belov)
  5. D Martin Marincin
  6. D Jeff Petry
  7. D Andrew Ference
  8. D Justin Schultz
  9. D Oscar Klefbom
  10. C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
  11. x (Mark Arcobello)
  12. C Boyd Gordon
  13. C Sam Gagner
  14. C Anton Lander
  15. L Taylor Hall
  16. L Nail Yakupov
  17. L Dustin Penner
  18. L Luke Gazdic
  19. R Jordan Eberle
  20. R David Perron
  21. R Daniel Winnik
  22. R Matt Hendricks
  23. R Tyler Pitlick

If you kept Gagner and filled in the final two vital peices internally opening night and near the cap would be:

  • Nuge-Hall-Eberle
  • Gagner-Yakupov-Perron
  • Gordon-Penner-Winnik
  • Lander-Hendricks-Gazdic/Pitlick
  • Orpik-Schultz
  • Marincin-Petry
  • Ference-Belov
  • Scrivens-Fasth

Okay, we can get some extra dollars by trading Sam Gagner and his $4.8M contract, but there’s absolutely no way that the club will get full value. Also, there is the first round pick, which could be #1 overall. Finally, there’s all those defensive prospects. So there’s some room to move but it’s not going to be easy.

  • Deal Gagner for something useful
  • Deal 1st rd pick plus something for a lower pick in the top 10 and something useful
  • Deal a combination of the above and a quality defensive prospect for something useful

Alright, this is the first working attempt at this. Let me have it!

gr8one: Haha, I noticed that too…except more than just a little slurring, he seemed pretty hammered to me.

Funny, watching a Washington game on centre ice back before Christmas, Gretzky was a guest of the owner, interviewed between periods…..was feelin no pain. Good for him – travel around the league, watch some games, have some beverages…..great life…he’s earned it.

  2. Ice Sage says:

Lowetide: So, we’re just forgetting the Kassian play now? Come on. He’s been very poor, but Gagner had value at the time of the signing.

Concussions are an under-reported bitch. Ference suffering the same.

  3. The Great One says:

    CF%

    Hall – 16.7

    Yakupov – 16.7

    Gagner – 16.7

    That’s not working.

  4. Lowetide says:

Corgis 20-13, 2-0 score. Oh, those Oilers.

(hope he’s not getting ALS, that would be embarrassing and already belongs to another athlete)

  6. verdad says:

Why is Kassian play some endless mulligan for Gagner?
Other players play well hurt or sore. He can’t ?
Any Oiler fan who had seriously watched him would have known that dumping him last summer was an imperative!

  7. ashley says:

What this team needs is more 2 way skilled players to keep the puck out of the net and also score a few. Like a Hemsky.

We’re going backwards. I’m not burning any jerseys yet, but this is a frustrating period in Oiler hockey.

    it isn’t an endless mulligan.

clearly he is not the same player since getting his face bashed in, and is not improving like he has to, and he shouldn’t be playing in the role he’s been given.

lot’s of players DON’T play well hurt.

  11. delooper says:

The Great One: Hemsky didn’t help any.

Hemsky’s goals were the difference in the Ottawa game.

  12. hags9k says:

    verdad,

Nothing will EVER top Lowe’s summer 6 rings spiel for insulting. That was the lowest day in MY Oiler fandom without a doubt.

Seeing Gagner struggle over and over is frustrating.

Listening to the head of the club, who I’d always supported and trusted and had faith in despite shit results, listening to him confirm beyond any doubt that he is in fact a moron and a pompous ass, that was heartbreaking. Every day that goes by with the OBC still running the show is a day my apathy grows.

OK now back to the game!

  13. verdad says:

MacTavish believes that getting fifth round draft choices are more important than having a competitive for fans actually paying real money to watch the Oilers play.
Flushing Hemsky and Schultz for nothing was another sign of incompetence,
And also contempt for the fans.

  14. rich says:

Nice to hear Stauffer rip the team and even Rob Brown criticized the PP.

The good thing about this kind of effort is that it will get us all looking forward to Spring a little earlier because it’s not worth watching them play this brutal brand of hockey.

Will say it again, Eakins has til American Thanksgiving next year to turn this around. The assistants need to go, especially the one who coaches the PP.

If MacT were still coaching, tomorrow would be a bag skate.

  15. PrairieOil says:

    verdad,

Gagner’s 2012/13 season pro-rates to ~65 points over 82 games. That’s 1C production and I’m guessing management felt he had taken a step forward. There’s your rationale for the contract.

  16. verdad says:

Gagner should never dress again as an Oiler
Arcobello and Lander deserve the spot.
Cutting losses and moving on .

  17. Glock9 says:

American Thanksgiving is too late – but you are right, that is when it will happen. And, another season wasted……….

  18. The Great One says:

delooper: Hemsky’s goals were the difference in the Ottawa game.

In how many other games did he make a difference?

  19. hags9k says:

    Glock9,

I’m for keeping Eakins. Bomb’er for Conner. Nurse and Ekblad back to junior. Status quo on the big club, Bob’s yer uncle.

Brain Southerby wrote on this , the assistants are not major decision makers, the power play and penalty kill are the coaches strategy and implementation. Do you guys really think that the coach would leave this to an assistant to sink?

  22. striatic says:

what i don’t get is why 2 or 3 or Lowe, MacTavish, Buchberger and Smith don’t resign out of shame.

i don’t understand how you can crush the will to play of 1st overall draft pick after 1st overall draft pick. doing irreparable damage to 4 or 5 players who should be superstars is damaging The Game as a whole and why someone hasn’t fallen on their sword is mind blowing to me.

  23. Lloyd B. says:

As a season ticket owner during the glory days I still hate the Islanders. Can’t even stand looking at the jerseys. Seeing Gretzky during the intermission even makes it worse. Our young fellows could learn a thing or two about that type of hatred to learn what it takes to win.

  24. JonyPro says:

  46. Maggie the Monkey says:

    mumbai max:
One more thing. The value of a player (trade or UFA) is what you get for him. PERIOD. Let me say that again. The value of a player is what you actually get for him. If the best offer is a 3rd and a 5th, then THAT IS THE VALUE of Hemsky. Everything else is smoke, mirrors, dreams, spin and fantasy. A player is WORTH what you can actually get for him. So enough of the MacT bashing. Assuming he didnot unplug his phone or turn down a 1st round pick, he got the actual market value for Hemsky.

While I understand the sentiment you’re driving at there is a flawed logic here IMO. This doesn’t necessarily apply to the Hemsky deal, but arguing that all contracts and trades reflect market value underplays the reality of human error. For example, while it is true that Detroit only had to pay $1 US* for Kris Draper’s contract, he clearly had much greater actual worth than this as a professional hockey player. In this case, Winnipeg seriously undervalued Draper’s worth, and his actual value was much higher than what he was sold for.

While I agree that opportunity cost is a shady concept, two familiar words will wrap up my point of mismanaged hockey assets not reflecting their true market value: Mike Milbury.

    * Note, not $1M US, but one single US dollar.

it is funny to think that the Oilers missed out on getting him, and will probably miss out on McDavid as well, despite getting the 1st overall every other year.

not that Hall, RNH and Yakupov are bad players or anything – just that MacKinnon and McDavid have been tracking as generational talents from a long way out.

I think Gillis is indeed on his way out. But I don’t think any GM has ever been fired because one goalie had one bad game.

  65. BONVIE says:

I think someone should tell the players that they should at least pretend to give a shit for the home games. I mean these tickets aren’t cheap, at least everyones just watching on the television for the road games, when the Mighty Oilers of Edmonton mail it in.

And funny how many thought Colorado should take Jones… McKinnon in an ideal spot with youngish established players paving the way for him (Stastny, o’Reilly, Landeskog). Whatever, Patty Roy has done a heck of a job in mile-high. Out in first round though (still wish Oilers were in that spot)

  67. VanOil says:

    striatic,

I believe all 3 of the Oilers #1 overall picks were the best players of there draft year. I also think Mackinnon and McDavid are generational talents. But the Oilers have sucked for a generation now so we are due.

  68. VanOil says:

Sadly being ‘hard to play against’ is broadcaster code for playing like Toronto not ‘hard to beat’ like Chicago. Or ‘hard to watch’ like the Oilers.

The term ‘generational talent’ is overused. It applies to Crosby, Lindros, Lemieux, 99 and probably McDavid the way he’s just overachieved wherever he’s gone.

McKinnon, Kane Stamkos, Hall – these are ‘great players’ but not ‘generational talents’ unless you’re talking about salmon or some rapidly-reproducing species!!!

Not sure what the term is for guys like Lidstrom or Brodeur who were just durably excellent

This team goes nowhere until there’s a complete overhaul of the coaching staff. I don’t know how anyone can look at what Eakins has done this year and believe that he’s the solution going forward. If the only reason for keeping him is because there have been too many coaching changes in the past few years, that’s not a good enough reason.

  87. Clay says:

That Marincin kid may be bona fide. I’d like to see them try him on the PP a bit.

  88. Pouzar says:

So what record is Gagner chasing to be getting prime time PP minutes?

  89. steveb12344 says:

    Pouzar:
So what record is Gagner chasing to be getting prime time PP minutes?

He only needs 9 more points to break Gretzky’s single game record.

  90. Andy P says:

The Great One: I think you may be right. The inmates ARE running the asylum.

Coach killers. Eberle and Gagner, to a lesser degree Hall.

  91. delooper says:

Nice for Larsen to show up well.

  92. Pouzar says:

    Karlsson!

  93. emonkee says:

damnit Larsen, why do u have to score, now we will have to keep you up here instead of bringing fedun/klef up

  94. VanOil says:

    4 Dman left. Smart fight.

  95. teddyturnbuckle says:

How is this for a stat. If Nuge doesn’t score 20 this year it will be the first time in 18 years that the highest forward taken in the draft hasn’t scored 20 goals by his third season. Most of them scored at least 20 in their first year.

  96. JonyPro says:

    emonkee:
damnit Larsen, why do u have to score, now we will have to keep you up here instead of bringing fedun/klef up

Oilers have 0 scratches. They have to call someone up regardless.

  97. emonkee says:

    JonyPro,

gregor mentioned in his blog, but is Larsen considered a call up (hence we get 3 only), or do we still have 4 left?

  98. JonyPro says:

    emonkee,

I wish I knew. I almost want to look and find that hand book.

  99. Rebilled says:

Our goalie is pretty damn good!

    and Vancouver’s are not!

  100. G Money says:

    Pouzar:
So what record is Gagner chasing to be getting prime time PP minutes?

Some sort of record in futility, but which one exactly I’m not sure.

  101. Pouzar says:

Right pardon me if I am not up in arms when he scores 18 in 62 games as a rookie and should have won the Calder.

  102. teddyturnbuckle says:

    Why is Gagner even playing?

  103. Andy P says:

Bastard goes and scores the winner.

  104. JonyPro says:

    teddyturnbuckle,

    That’s why hahaha

  105. delooper says:

Gagner really needed a moment like that. Hopefully he has a bunch more before the end of the season.

  106. Pouzar says:

    TRADE HIM!!!

  107. G Money says:

Ha! Sammy heard us and was shamed…

  108. emonkee says:

is that why gagner play? to score gwg?

  109. Marcus Oilerius says:

Good stuff, Sam. Way to stand up for yourself.

  110. gvblackhawk says:

    emonkee:

I think that might go to Hall.

  111. G Money says:

All your GWG are belong to Gagner

(or mebbe all your GWG are belong to Hall)

  112. JonyPro says:

    Pouzar,

Eh, his trade value went up .1 :D

  113. teddyturnbuckle says:

    Pouzar,
I like Nuge but go down the list of of first and second overalls since1996 and its not even close when you look at goal production. Most of them were 30 goal scorers in their rookie season and 40 goal scorers by their third.

  114. Gerta Rauss says:

As much as I want a top 3 pick, I can’t help but cheer for wins

    #mixedfeelings

  115. emonkee says:

    gvblackhawk,

u might be right…now on to youtube to see the post game live…

  116. Kitchener says:

We can finally laugh at Vancouver again!!

  117. emonkee says:

the best thing is scrivens get to keep his .941 saving % after this game

  118. FastOil says:

Nice win lads. It is a bizarre experience to watch a game like this from these two teams that were once indomitable, the last two dynasties. YIKES!!!

  119. Rebilled says:

    Kitchener,

I’ve been laughing at them forever!

  120. Clay says:

That GWG certainly looked like it went in off of Hall’s stick/skate. That’s probably why he looked all sour grapes when everyone was face-washing Gagner.

“I should have the stinky gloves in MY face, dagnabit!”

  121. stevezie says:

The loser point was introduced to enocurage aggressive play in close games. This was the Isle’s 19th OT game; clearly it has not achieved its goals.

Bold solution: If, at the end of overtime, the score is still tied? No one gets a point. A tie is a loss.

I don’t think there is an appetite to lose the shootout, but if there was, this would do it. Would reckless pond hockey be fun?

  122. Pouzar says:

He’s not a pure goal scorer but how many of those guys had the all around game this kid has at the same time in their respective careers? Goal scoring is just one aspect of the game. I still take him #1 in a do over.

  123. Pouzar says:

Gotta love Scrivens. Man where has that been.

  124. teddyturnbuckle says:

    Pouzar,

I would also but it’s looking more and more like 2011 and 2012 were bad draft years

  125. VanOil says:

Ice Sage: The term ‘generational talent’ is overused.

I would call your version of ‘generational talent’ ~ ‘all time greats’ where Lidstrom and Brodeur fit. Kane, Stamkos and Hall are so far just All Stars (if we had such a thing any more).

Can’t we just give 3 pts for a regulation win?
Don’t better teams win more in regulation?
Shouldn’t the best team make the playoffs?

Not questioning you Stevzie…just thinking out loud.

I am not worried about RNH. He’ll be a superstar and make that #1 pick count.

In case anyone’s forgotten, young Nuge (because of injuries and the lockout) has only just played a little over 100 NHL games so far. Gamewise, he hasn’t even finished his second season yet.

  128. Clay says:

Pouzar: Can’t we just give 3 pts for a regulation win?

I’ve been on board for this idea for a while. Just makes sense.

Or you could do 2 points for a regulation win. 0 points for a regulation loss. 1 point for an OT win, and -1 points for an OT loss.

The advantage is there’d still be a nice conservation of points. And there’d be a big incentive to win in OT.

  130. Pouzar says:

    Marincin: 66.7% CF

  131. delooper says:

    Marcinin is trending blue bubbles.

  132. delooper says:

That would make a good Bjork song.

  133. Pouzar says:

delooper: Marcinin is trending blue bubbles.

I guess he finally got the green light to be “Offensive”.
    That was fun to watch.

  134. fifthcartel says:

Marincin looked incredible tonight, I agree that I think he may have been told he can be more offensive but there’s definitely a player there.

  135. delooper says:

My name is Olaf and I like warm hugs!

  136. Pouzar says:

    fifthcartel:

And roughly 75% of his TOI played without his regular partner (Petry).

VanOil: I would call your version of ‘generational talent’ ~ ‘all time greats’ where Lidstrom and Brodeur fit. Kane, Stamkos and Hall are so far just All Stars (if we had such a thing any more).

A quantitative way to measure “generational talent” when talking about forwards is anyone who has led the league in points-per-game 3 or more times. Since 1950, you get a list of:

    Howe
    Beliveau
    Mikita
    Esposito
    Lafleur
    Gretzky
    Lemieux
    Jagr
    Crosby
    Ovechkin

That’s 10 players in 64ish years. I’ve always considered a “generational” talent to mean a player that only comes around once in a generation (and a generation in this sense being around 10 years or the effective length of a good player career). Stands to reason that there shouldn’t be more than one or two playing in their prime at the same time. Otherwise, well, they’re not really a generational talent..

Keep in mind, this list doesn’t include Dmen. Otherwise, obviously, Orr….

  138. Ducey says:

Gagner with 14 pts in his last 20 games. That’s 57 pts over an 82 game season.

  139. Hammers says:

What another CRAP game but again a win . How do you play for 10 minutes and get a win . Oh yea NYI .Something stinks and it must be in that dressing room . McT needs to do some weeding when you see them get excited over Smyth tying a record then they actually tried . Smyth needs resigned 1 year $ 1 mill for 4th line LW especially if he can help bring a full effort into the room .I know so many who want to give up there tickets but are afraid they may actually become a team worth watching .

  140. Lowetide says:

    Ducey:
Gagner with 14 pts in his last 20 games. That’s 57 pts over an 82 game season.

Is this correct? That can’t be right.

If you go by the last ten forwards selected 1st overall Nuge and Yakupov are both in the bottom two based on first 2-3 seasons. Maybe Rick Nash in third.

Its a good thing the Oilers have three of them. haha.

  142. Oilanderp says:

Lowetide: Is this correct? That can’t be right.

It is accurate: SOURCE HERE but you’ll have to add tonight’s 2 pts yourself. He had 1 total point in his first 7 games, and was -10. 14 pts in last 20 games though and is -4 in that span.

  143. russ99 says:

Glad to see Marincin turn another corner, the Olympics had to have been a big confidence builder for him. Would like to see him add a few more pounds over the summer, as he’d be even more effective in the tough areas on D.

Plus it further proves it’s best to be patient with defense prospects.

  144. Romulus Apotheosis says:

The Great One: In how many other games did he make a difference?

    every single one.

  145. PhrankLee says:

    Romulus Apotheosis: every single one.

I must agree wholly. I really saw how the team was missing Hemsky for the first 2 periods. He always pushed the play and was one of our most responsible forwards. Plus I am truly saddened with his departure. My entire family loved that kid. Tough as nails. Humble. A truly awesome Oiler.

  146. Bag of Pucks says:

    Romulus Apotheosis: every single one.

Hemsky played every game this season? That’s a first.
