OILERS SIGN JORDAN OESTERLE

The Edmonton Oilers signed a college free agent today. Jordan Oesterle is a Western Michigan defender and his resume looks good. Here are a few quotes from college hockey sources:

  • Chris Peters, United States of Hockey: The junior defenseman has developed well under WMU’s defensive-minded head coach Andy Murray. Since the former NHL coach’s arrival, WMU has been a factory for defensemen. Oesterle added a little more offense to his game, but it’s his defending that has drawn interest. I remember hearing about him way back in the middle of the season when scouts noted he was developing into a really solid defender and was going to be a factor on the college UFA market. If Oesterle can get just a little stronger, he should be able to round out into an NHL-caliber defenseman. Having played on a team where they rely on defense, Oesterle had a big role with the Broncos, often playing top-pairing minutes. I think he’s going to need a fair amount of time in the AHL to continue to get stronger and adjust to the pro game, but he’s a smart hockey player with potential. He’s headed to Oklahoma city right away, so the Oilers won’t be burning a year off of his two-year ELC. It’s a relatively low-risk signing for a defenseman that has been trending up developmentally.

I used a giant clip from the report, but there’s more to read so click-through if you are able. Chris was on the Lowdown today, and had nice things to say about Oesterle. We’re going to need a nickname, I’ll never be able to spell his name properly.

  • Jeff Cox, SB Nation: His stock grew as the season progressed, moving from a fourth or fifth defender up to the team’s top defensive pairing with Dennis Brown. Oesterle finished the season with a plus/minus of +2. Oesterle is a smaller defenseman that excels at making excellent decisions with the puck. He’s a smooth skater, and plays sound positional defense to make up for a lack of physicality in his game.

pronman oesterleSo, there’s some conflict in these reports but that isn’t uncommon. I don’t think we should be too concerned about them, and lack of size issues that are flying about as the day wears on and we all go off on tangents. The thing to remember is this: he’s a young man with talent and signed a contract with the Oilers. Oesterle may end up being another Taylor Fedun, or Mark Arcobello or Bryan Lerg—we won’t know for some time.

We should cheer him on. After that, we’ll see.

Did you intend the double meaning? Is this also a “great sign”?

LT, a question for you and the collective, any word on Khaira or Chase joining OKC for a few games to finish the season off? It sounds like they have signed a few guys on ATO’s from Major Junior but I haven’t seen any players already signed by the Oilers headed there at all.

Nothing so far, but there are rules about signings etc that may impact these things.

Sounds like Khaira is already on his way and OKC signed Josh Winquist to an ATO. He had 93 points in 67 games + 47 goals and was also a ppg player last year for Everett.

Jordan Oesterle, I think it’s pronounced Ohster-lee, but definitely going to pronounce it Ohster-lay.

Also a PA Raider blue (Graig?) I’m working to gather them all up. Will appear in a post later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Great they are looking for these guys from the NCAA every year. Always appreciate the older prospects.

As for the nickname, upon first read I immediately saw his name as Oberle. Yep, Jordan Oberle, future clutch performance defender of the Edmonton Oilers.

  9. thejonrmcleod says:

Too bad Oesterle is a D. Would have been nice to hope for a line consisting of Jordan Oesterle and Jordan Eberle.

So, I don’t get it…not defensively skilled, not an offensive dynamo by numbers, not big….

    What’s missing here?

Sign that other guy everyone’s after and Dillon Simpson already.

The player I would like to see them sign is Kenny Morrison He looked real good against Denver. The college announcers raved about his shot and they really tried to set him up for it on pp.

If we can’t sign a western Canadian kid the oilers have another problem than the ones we know.

They are getting busy on getting better. Good to see.

From Pronman – “defense not the best”

Osterle and the Oilers – a perfect pair!

A smart player who knows how to make a good pass. Sounds like what we heard at the beginning of the season with Grebeshkov, Belov, Larsen, and others. The thing this time is that, as a signing it is a much safer bet.

Good move by the Oilers, hope he can gain some traction in OKC and develop. Suspect that between he and Simpson coming on board this all but eliminates Folin signing here. I hope I’m wrong.

With Hemsky it’s more of a “he’s always been an Oiler” not a fear of him doing well elsewhere. He’s Hemmer! Mr. Highlight reel.

I really hope Hemsky was the last sell Low MacT will have to do. All we can do as fans is hope Hemsky plays lights out. It gives us the joy of watching him Win! Hopefully. And give MacT ammo in future trades not to trade low because of perceived reputation. Thanks MSM! And Brownlee. Prick.

With Schultz and Petry both in line for raises.

No way Maricin is going down

Klef has been looking much better then others..

Petry won’t be here next year is my reading of the tea leaves.

    Maricin – XXX
    Klef – Schultz
    Ference – Nurse
    Fraser FFS

There is no way Nurse doesn’t make the team, Maricin isn’t going anywhere and Klef pretty much has to completely fall apart over the summer in my view to not be on the squad. Were anchored with Ference, leaving either Schultz or Petry.. Who do you think moves?

They’ll draft up the middle or trade the pick.

Eberle/Petry/Pick is going to bring home that XXX.. Just who is it?

As much as I enjoy watching him play hockey, I would nevertheless prefer he stay in the east for awhile. I don’t need a heavy dose of the ‘full’ Hemsky vs the Oilers.

Eventually, It will be time for him to come back Edmonton for a serious playoff run…

Yikes! If Marincin, Klefbom and Schultz are 3 of our top 4 D, we are aiming for the McDavid and Eichel sweepstakes next year. They WILL be good, top 4 one day but not next year. On a contending team Marincin and Schultz are third pairing, while Klefbom starts in the AHL next year.

How do you justify playing our best defender on the 3rd pair? No way MacT find 4 players to slot ahead of Maricin. Klef isn’t your average rookie though, having played with men in Sweden. Talent is talent. No I don’t think it would be wise to play Maricin Klef and Schultz in the top 4, but everything suggests it happens.

I like Marincin and I eventually see him as great number 3 maybe number 2 D man on a contending team. Hopefully this is with oilers. But the fact is those three guys need to make some significant jumps in their play to be considered top 4 D man. Schultz needs to be better defensively, while Marincin has shown offensive ability in junior, he has 0 goals 4 assists in half a season here and needs to take the next jump offensively to be considered top 4.

Klefbom has shown some good things but it’s probably best if he started next year in he AHL for more seasoning. This is what I see. And I know a few of the guests that Lowetide has on his show have said the same thing. Ryan Batty and I think Bruce MCCurdy.

I don’t know how much more can be gained from keeping Klefbom in the minors. He has to build on his NHL experience at some point and there’s not a lot left from him to learn in OKC. Barring a miracle trade, I think he makes this team with ease next fall.

  50. Lois Lowe says:

    spoiler,

Agreed. MacT has done nothing but try to add pieces to the organization. Some, like Fraser, have not worked well, but others, like Gazdic, have. I mention the latter only because as LT says, it saves them from going after a different Mike Brown/SMac type.

I like the approach though; look at high-end players from the CHL, then try to find developed players from the American college ranks, finally look at undrafted CHL overagers that have shown well.

Klefbom has a lot to learn and doing it in the minors is fine. The majority of this team is playing one or two spots above where they are suppose to.

An easier way to look at it, is where do Marincin and Klefbom slot on most playoff bound teams right now. On most teams , Marincin is third pairing, Klefbom is in the minors.

If next year, Marincin starts out as a 2nd/3rd pairing D man, Klefbom starts in the AHL, not because they took a step back but because this team managed to get 2 top 4 D men, that would be a good thing. If Marincin and Klefbom happen to be in our top 4, we are in trouble, cause they just arnt ready yet.

At age 18 Phil Housely had 19 g and 47 assists in the NHL……..did I mention at 18
