SENATORS AT OILERS G63, 13-14

We’re in the trade deadline window of opportunity now, don’t hit the can without your phone. Nail Yakupov will play tonight, if you’re at 7-11 and a distant speaker yells “healthy scratch” assume it’s Hemsky.

And we’re rolling.

SCHULTZ TWITTER OH MY

schultz555Nick Schultz’ brother has been tweeting out some very personal things in regard to Nick and the Oilers over the last few months.  It didn’t really reach its audience until last night, and then all hell broke loose. Here are some examples (courtesy Woodguy in the comments section).

  • kris schultz ‏@ripper5505Dec 31
If Yak gave the puck away like Ebs just did he wouldn’t see the ice unless it was in his vodka. Yet Ebs keeps getting tossed over the boards
  • kris schultz ‏@ripper5505Dec 31
There is as much accountability in that Oiler dressing room as there is hair on Kevin Lowes head. What a sad state of affairs my friends
  • kris schultz ‏@ripper5505Dec 28
My concept of the Chinese language is equivalent to Sam Gagne’s concept of the Centre position in his own end. #thestickcheckwizard
  • kris schultz ‏@ripper5505Dec 5
19 is poor lets not kid ourselves. But when is someone going to question Steve Smiths ability to coach?19 simply doesn’t know his position
  • kris schultz ‏@ripper5505Nov 13
If you don’t play my way and the right way you won’t play” Dallas Eakins. Well guess what Dallas the kids are eating your lunch just like They did to all the other coaches they’ve had. If you punish Yak and call him out you better not look the other way when 4 and 14 mess up

If I were a betting man, Nick Schultz being dealt today would get a lot of coin. I’m not certain if this will get any play beyond twitter, but it does show a side of the Oilers one suspects they don’t want out there. It’s a field day and a disaster. I kind of feel for Kris Schultz, he clearly cares for his brother and this is going to be a tough 24 hours. Hopefully they can have a beer and share a laugh at the lake this summer.

 BELOV’S BLUESbelov5

Anton Belov, who I suspect was in play, won’t be traded at the deadline. Belov has a partially torn oblique and won’t be back for at least a couple of weeks. Phil Larsen has a perfectly good plane ticket to OKC if he clears waivers at 10 this morning. I’ve gone through the entire season being uncertain about Belov as an NHL player. I wish I had Kris Schultz’ clarity on the matter.

TRADE DEADLINE VALUE TABLE

  • Ales Hemsky: First-round draft pick (or a second and a fourth).
  • Nick Schultz: A third round pick.
  • Ryan Smyth: A fourth round pick.
  • Corey Potter: A fourth round pick.
  • Anton Belov: A fourth round pick.
  • Ilya Bryzgalov: A fourth round pick.
  • Jesse Joensuu: A fourth round pick.
  • Taylor Fedun: A fourth round pick.
  • Mark Fraser: A fourth round pick.
  • Luke Gazdic: A fifth round pick.
  • Ryan Jones: A sixth round pick.
  • Denis Grebeshkov: A seventh round pick.
  • Ben Eager: A seventh round pick.
  • Oscar Klefbom: As part of a hockey deal.

I have not included Anton Lander and Mark Arcobello, but the attention paid by Montreal to the Barons may be coming into view. We’ve heard that MacT is interested in Andrei Markov, and that might be a large deal involving players and picks. I have included Oscar Klefbom for that purpose.

hemsky22The Calgary Flames, beacons of light and truth, tweeted this out two deadlines ago. An apology quickly followed, but it reflects the attitudes many have had toward 83 over the years. Hemsky remained an Oiler then (I believe) because of Kevin Lowe. I do not believe the call will come this time to sign the Pardubice prince, and do suspect he will be dealt—perhaps before game time. Ales Hemsky is the focus of a fine article by Travis Yost here and is mentioned here in a Rob Rossi article detailing Pittsburgh’s interest. The perfect fit for Hemsky? San Jose, followed by Pittsburgh and then (imo) Ottawa. I always wonder about New Jersey when a player is undervalued.

markov1We discussed Andrei Markov on Sunday, that rumor has legs and became a central item on twitter yesterday. I think we can see the logic—bringing in a veteran guy who can play big, tough minutes—but that was part of the idea with Andrew Ference and it resulted in a long term deal with subpar results (so far). I do understand the thinking behind sending (as an example) Oscar Klefbom and a 2015 pick to Montreal for Markov (and then signing him) because it alters the depth chart in a very nice way.

  • Markov-J Schultz
  • Marincin-Petry
  • Ference-Dillon Simpson

I used Simpson, your mileage may vary. The question I have about Markov is this: how much of the numbers are him and how much are his partner? Also how much does he have left?

ANDREI MARKOV EXTRA SKATER PLAYER CARD

markov extras skaterTHE VOLLMAN SLEDGEHAMMER

markov sledgehammer

We’ll see. I don’t know that they’ll get Markov, but if they do the salary and term are one concern, the ask is the other. That’s a rumor worth fretting over.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

rocknrollaThis is the day to check your twitter every minute. We’ll have all the updates and the breaking news, and it’s a busy show, too. 10 this morning on TSN 1260, here’s the schedule:

  • Scott Cullen from TSN. Deadline and is St. Louis the favorite for Stanley? He also has an interesting take on some of the big names available at the deadline.
  • Andrew Berkshire from Habs Eye on the Prize. Montreal at the deadline, and I’ll ask how a team that plays Douglas Murray 20 minutes a night maintains a playoff spot.
  • Corey Graham Oil Kings PBP. Medicine Hat and Calgary put some sting into the weekend, OK in SK to make it better.
  • Bruce McCurdy from Cult of Hockey. We’ll talk deadline, Scrivens deal and more.
  • Darrin Bauming from TSN. Jets at the deadline and Buck Pierce calls it a career.

10-1260 via text and @Lowetide_ on twitter. It’s going to be a blast, see you on the radio!

Fasth is a weird choice for the Oilers. He’s in his 30s, been hurt all year and is relatively expensive. Lots of other goalies available.

Yes, and Fasth is the best one.

He’s 31, which isn’t that old for a goalie considering he hasn’t had a lot of miles put on him, and with the 1 year term the money isn’t going to mess anything up especially after the value Scrivens signing.

Fasth’s play last year was incredible. plus he helped me win my fantasy league so i’m a fan. I really like this move.

  6. The Great One says:

RexLibris: Wasn’t it Clarke who put an offer sheet on Kesler all those years ago?

    Yep.

  7. Clay says:

RexLibris: Not if I shut my ears.

Is it old news? Sorry, I haven’t been keeping up this week (midterms!)

  8. RexLibris says:

To be fair, I hadn’t expected one that brought back a body.

So used to Tambellini – sell bodies for picks. Got to acclimate to MacTavish – make moves that improve the team.

    Weird.

  9. FPB94 says:

    The Great One,

After all, Erik Jonhson did get traded for a 1st, Shattenkirk and Stewart, Oh well. That’s what makes the deadline fun.

    Ah, gotcha.

  11. RexLibris says:

I hadn’t heard it before. But it sounds like Eastern Media – “Yakupov needs to leave Edmonton because…well we don’t really know why but we just seem to keep repeating it therefore it must be true. And why wouldn’t someone want to leave Edmonton?”

  12. Pouzar says:

RexLibris: To be fair, I hadn’t expected one that brought back a body.

Yeah move that helps the team next year wasn’t expected. Very nice

  13. RT26 says:

I would consider trading Eberle and Gagner for Myers and Stewart.

Keep Yak with Hall and RNH
Try Lander with Stewart and Perron
Gordon with Smyth and hendricks for the last part of the year.
Arcobello with Pitlick ad Horak on Line 4.

Gives you less to focus on in free agency (no more goalies or top 6 Fs – just 3rd line wingers) and might start balancing the roster. Keeps the #1 pick too.

  14. Kitchener says:

Every time I hear the pricetag rise for Kesler I sigh a little louder. He’s a good player, but I’d rather they pull a Calgary and only sell off their assets once they’re over the hill.

    Bryz in summary:
    – signed for nothing
    – provided stability in the post-DD interim
    – in essence, traded for Fasth (4th vs 3rd & 5th picks)

From start to finish, this is stellar asset management from MacT.

One theme I wonder about is MacT’s use of draft picks as currency. Does he use these more often than other GMs? He has spoken of draft picks as currency in the past, and this would seem quite clever if true, giving us an advantage over teams who are stuck on the barter system (barter: trading hockey players for hockey players; currency: trading players for currency and then trading that currency for other players.)

  20. Ducey says:

tsnjamesduthie: All you NHL GMs just calm down a little. No need to rush into anything here. Sleep on it.

My default setting is that I want the Oilers to win. But if they are ever going to drop a game this one would not kill me. I would like the Senators to make the playoffs and I would like the Oilers to have a top 2 pick. So a Hemsky hat trick and a Smyth powerplay goal in a heroic loss is my goals for the night.

The Hemsky trade just got more interesting. He could if the trade is right.

  45. nelson88 says:

Kessler won’t waive for a Canadian team, Rangers (presumably AV related), Columbus and he denies he requested a trade out of Vancouver when it is pretty obvious he did. Very good, competitive player but with his prima donna attitude and injury history it could be a major disaster for the team acquiring him.

  46. delooper says:

I really don’t understand what people get out of most proper sports journalism. McTavish’s press conference basically was just “yes I’m considering the kinds of things GMs consider. Name name name.” The end.

It’s not a question of worshipping anything. The Canucks just haven’t been very successful. Historically they tend to come across as more of a country-club team. I’ve never been able to shake that perspective. Together with their fans being kind of fickle and lackadaisical and more into basketball, as a team they’re just too vanilla. Even when the Oilers are losing they’re far more interesting to me.

    Give me a break…

If Nick was aware of these tweets, he would have told his brother to shut the fuck up if he was really a team player. Because Nick’s play as an Oiler gives his brother ZERO fucking right to talk about the work of Gagner in his own end (whose name, by the way, he couldn’t even fucking spell correctly).

Giving your loudmouth and idiotic brother ammunition to use on twitter without recourse (e.g. apologizing and taking it down) is the epitome of the kind of arrogant, self-serving, self-entitled brat of a 31 year old I would love to trade for a bag of hockey pucks. If they get a draft pick for him? Ecstatic. He’s Whitney with one more ankle but less talent and desire, and an apparently decreasing knowledge of positional defense.

No need to swear, new guy. That’s not going to endear you to anyone.

The lifeblood of this blog is ideas, opinions and assertions backed up with reasons, evidence, facts, etc. Not scuttlebutt backed up with phantom sources.

Ryan may actually have a source. His source may actually know something, and his source’s info may actually turn out to be correct. But:

    1) The source is unidentified, so has no independent credibility.

    2) By his own admission, Ryan has never cited this source before and thus has no track record. Having posted here a lot is absolutely no reason to consider someone credible. Godot and DSF post here all the time.

    3) The assertion is so vague that it amounts to nothing more than “MacTavish wants to trade Yakupov.”

    4) Saying “or this summer” basically means this source has no specific information about a pending trade.

If you don’t care (a less offensive and hyperbolic way to express your sentiment), that’s cool. Not really sure why you’re posting in that case though. Generally if I don’t care about something, I move on. I don’t start swearing.

Lol. Yakupov is an asset, so if you keep drafting bpa, eventually you’re going to have to trade for need (defense in this case). If the Oilers can’t get the return they expect, he won’t be traded.

That being said my source made it sound like it’s a done deal. I don’t know anything. About the return, but don’t be surprised if Yakupov gets traded tomorrow or at the draft.

Wasn’t that the Oilers’ mistake in a nutshell – e.g. waiting 9 years to figure out they have some issues? You meant 8 years, right?

I have way more confidence in the Oilers’ goaltending tandem next year and there’s nothing you can say to convince yourself otherwise :)

Vcr – about to end the season with no #2 C, two 1st liners eating up over 10 miliion per season and on the decline (and unlikely to be traded as they are a “package deal”), dependency on Kassian and Steve P-whatever for top 6 scoring, core veterans wanting out, a frantic coach, and their most experienced goaltender named lack. If those aren’t issues, then you must be day dreaming.

This part I agree with, and that’s why it was important for them to take the best guy they could get rather than going for need: not all assets can be drafted and if you’re going to trade for stars, you’re going to need something of value to offer.
