THE PARDUBICE PRINCE AND THE NOT VERY GOOD, VERY VERY BAD DAY

He arrived as a skinny teenage boy, and leaves us today a man. Ales Hemsky is the most beautiful, least understood Oiler of his generation—an icon’s talent with a pauper’s memories. It is the saddest damn thing.

KEVIN PRENDERGAST ON HIS FAVORITE DRAFT PICK

  • “Our staff works as a team and whomever the player is that we take we’re taking him as a team and there might be three or four scouts who don’t like the player but the other nine guys on staff do like him. My first pick was Ales Hemsky, and you certainly want him to play and I’m yearning for him to be a success and so far I think Ales is going to be.” -Kevin Prendergast to Guy Flaming, HF interview, August 15, 2003.

yost hemskyI don’t know where Hemsky is going—hell, maybe they’ll sign him later today—but San Jose is ideal and Ottawa fits but after last night’s game I don’t know if they’re buying. The Rangers keep getting mentioned and the Penguins have confirmed their interest.

  • Larry Brooks Sather — seeking depth on defense, and who isn’t? — has had conversations with the Oilers regarding rental winger Ales Hemsky, but the Rangers, who were first offered Hemsky during early-season inquiries about Nail Yakupov, are reluctant to yield the second-round draft pick sought by Edmonton.

Looks like it could come down to what happens with Callahan in NYC.

IMPROVED RECORD

mact common 5On December 27, the Oilers were 39GP, 12-24-3. In the 24 games since, Edmonton is 9-10-5. In their last 10: 6-2-2. The Corgi’s are still barking and the power play is mule stubborn, but the goaltending has been sublime. It won’t work long term, but it’s been a nice 10-game run in the results department.

  • MacTavish: “If we had an opportunity to do something that I thought was fair and legitimate we would have done it today but we’re going to be pushed to the deadline tomorrow. when that happens there’s a certain amount of risk at stake but right now we’re prepared to take the risk rather than settle for what’s been offered so far. I think, from talking to quite a few of my colleagues, that this is fairly standard practice right now.”

I believe the Oilers will move Hemsky, Nick Schultz and Ryan Smyth today. In my wildest dreams they would re-sign Hemsky and Smyth today, but if is for children.

MacTavish is satisfied with his goaltending, and it’s interesting to look back one year ago to the Ben Bishop deadline. Edmonton was very interested in the big goalie but lost out to a seemingly mediocre deal offered by Tampa Bay. One year later, the season lost, MacTavish added and signed Ben Scrivens and then traded yesterday for Viktor Fasth.

There’s 100 miles of difference between Steve Tambellini and Craig MacTavish. The turnover in net is a clear indication.

YESTERDAY

  • scrivens11MacT: We have two really good options next year. It’ll be a competitive position as it always is. Driving into the office (Tuesday), I thought if we could stabilize it for next year and check that box off. That was my objective going in.”

He also mentioned Richard Bachman (doing well in the AHL) and Laurent Brossoit (the future). The two NHL goaltenders and Brossoit are the major items in the Oiler goaltending arsenal. I think the NHL bets are solid, and Brossoit is dominant in the ECHL. We’ll see if he can cut it in the AHL (likely) beginning next season.

 AND TODAY

Ryan Smyth.

TRADE DEADLINE VALUE TABLE

  • Ales Hemsky: First-round draft pick (or a second and a fourth).
  • Nick Schultz: A third round pick.
  • Ryan Smyth: A fourth round pick.
  • Corey Potter: A fourth round pick.
  • Anton Belov: A fourth round pick.
  • Ilya Bryzgalov: A fourth round pick. **correctly predicted value**
  • Jesse Joensuu: A fourth round pick.
  • Taylor Fedun: A fourth round pick.
  • Mark Fraser: A fourth round pick.
  • Luke Gazdic: A fifth round pick.
  • Ryan Jones: A sixth round pick.
  • Denis Grebeshkov: A seventh round pick.
  • Ben Eager: A seventh round pick.

There may be some movement too among the minor league players, depending on how big these deals get today. Montreal was following OKC around all week and are apparently hot to unload Rene Bourque (can’t imagine why!) which may bring in Corey Potter or similar into the equation.

SAMWISE

gagner8

There hasn’t been a lot of talk about Gagner leading up to the deadline, but there’s a pulse after last night. He played well to my eye, and had his passing ability on full display. I doubt he’ll be dealt, but wanted to mention just in case.

TODAY, ALL WILL BE REVEALED

JONES111This morning at 10 on TSN 1260, Dave Jamieson will host a four hour special at the deadline. I’ll be part of a panel that includes Jason Strudwick, Jason Gregor, Guy Flaming and a cast of several. We’re devoting a lot of effort in order to bring you an Oiler focused deadline and will of course cover all of the big deals. Please ignore your work and listen!!!

I’m sure there’s a pretty nuanced process of back-and-forth involving whispered conversations into cellphones and lawyers and agents and stuff, but they should really just line up all the UFA cattle in a holding pen and hold a straight-up draft pick auction.

  4. Lowetide says:

One final thing: Oilers may recall a couple of Barons today. If they recall them today those two won’t count as their final 4 callups for the rest of the season.

The choices: Lander or Arco, Pitlick, Fedun, Klefbom.

    My guess? Lander and Klef

    My preference? Lander and Arco

  5. Ben says:

Aren’t the Oil down to 6 D as it is?

If they move Schultz, you’d have to think they’d recall 2 D.

There has never been a trade dedline I have looked forward to less.

I’ve had a lot of different feelings this last week ,from sadness of knowing I was watching the last few Ales Hemsky games as an Oiler, to feeling happy for him that he can finally get out of this place where he has been criminally underappreciated and get somewhere he can win.

Only in Edmonton do people think you need veterans like Hendricks, Gadzic and Ferrence but not someone like Hemsky. Why because this team is some sort of offensive juggernaut? For the life of me I will never understand this day, this day should of never come. But its here. And it fucking sucks.

Hamsky would be Prendergast’s favourite pick. Says more about the alternatives than Hemsky. Here are the best alternatives:

    2000 Brad Winchester, Matt Lombardi
    2001 Jusi Markkanen
    2002 Stoll, Greene
    2003 MAP, JFJ, Brodziak
    2004 Dubnyk, Schremp
    2005 Cogliano
    2006 Petry, Peckham
    2007 Gagner, Nash

Callahan is this summer’s David Clarkson.

  37. nycoil says:

Lot of conditional this and that on that NYR-TBL trade, but finding it a little amusing that everyone is now calling MSL a baby, and that this will tarnish his legacy, when Oiler fans have known him to be a bit of a baby all along (thanks, Linus). Hell of a player nonetheless. The trade breaks down to MSL for a year and one playoff run (because he would be a UFA and has said he’d only play for the Rangers after that anyway) vs 2015 1st and 2014 2nd (1st if they reach the Conference Finals) and Callahan for one playoff run.

Is MSL next year worth a 1st in a deep draft and a 2nd rounder this year? Interesting trade. Doesn’t seem as lopsided as some are making it out to be to me.

Good Gord, I hope not. No one makes more than Hall, let alone Callahan. Good player but he’s not worth more than $5m x 4 and any team paying him what he is asking is nuts. I thought the Rangers went too far even going to $6m x 6 and he still turned that down. He does have ties to Buffalo, of course, so maybe he goes home this summer. I certainly don’t see Stevie Y paying him that much to stay on. Pure rental.

Clarkson had the size and toughness MacT wants for his top 6. Callahan is 5’10″ and 190 lbs and has 16 PIMs this year.

I don’t normally forward stuff like this, but I thought this was funny, and nice to get outside perspective too. It’s from a buddy of mine, who’s a Red Wings fan, regarding the Oilers moves yesterday, possible Detroit moves, and the Rangers move today:

“You have to hand it to McT, turning Flipping Dubnyk (already waived) Bryz two 3rd and 5th for Hendricks, Scrivens, Fasth and a 4th. So which one of the kids is he going to trade?

“We are going to make a trade that I am sure of, whether its smart or dumb is TBD. My gut is he gets erhoff and sends Jurco/Tartar Sauce and Kindle/Quincey which I would be okay with as long as its not tartar.

“NYR makes a dumb move as always. I get the getting something for Cally, but a 1st and 2nd for grampa boo boo pants St. Louis. Not to sure about that one.”
    (sic – times ten over)

    Hall, Nuge, Ebs
    Perron, ??, Hemsky
    Jesennu, Gordon, Hendricks

On the back end; Should we be fortunate to get Ekbald (and he’ll play next year) could be another monster d-man in this league. Lloyd B.,

Because it’s more of the same old boy network.

Just because they were a quality junior team doesn’t mean we should over-emphasize those players over others due to Green’s addition to the organization.

Would rather us scout and acquire players on merit, not to scratch Mr. Oil King’s back. And yes, I do agree Lazar and Samuelsson are good examples of that.

Look at all the other options out there in the draft and trade, and we dump a good NHL player on a cost effective contract to bring in an iffy goalie in Broissoit, just cause Oil Kings.

That goes double for the Moroz rounds-early pick, regardless how good his overage third-year WHL numbers look.

I think it’s awesome that MacT played Hemsky the day before the deadline and then traded him to the team they played. Oh, and Hemsky got 2 goals. Savvy unconventional thinking by MacT.

In Hemsky’s interview a day or two ago, he mentioned he was excited to play on the first line because that was “his game”. This implies he probably wasn’t keen to re-sign for a 3rd line role with the Oilers (despite the fact he’s better at the 3rd line role than he realizes).

The return sucks but something is better than nothing for a 29th place team.

Who knows? Maybe he comes back in a few years at a lower salary for a cup run as a bona fide 3rd liner.

As for the Oilers post-trade, well, you can add ‘secondary scoring from the 3rd and 4th lines’ as a new item on the to do list for MacT and Eakins line-shuffling.

I’m not suggesting Hemsky is Kessler’s equal. C is more important, better defensively, not a rental etc. but the difference in returns (if Kessler fetches what is rumoured) is wonky. BONVIE: Il tell you two guys why, because your not playing theEA sports video game. This trade represents Hemsky’s market value, this is the most these other GM’saround the league felt that this pending UFA was worth.

But then why bother for that return. Sure, maybe he wasn’t going to sign here, but the return has almost no value. Hemsky for 20 games is worth more than a 3rd and a 5th, even if he signs elsewhere as an UFA. Plus, it gives time for him to change his mind and decide to sign here sometime before July 1.

That the Oilers are a worse team without Hemsky is incontrovertible. What has really been accomplished with this trade?

You know what, Ducey, if MacT couldn’t find a deadline trade partner willing to give up a 1st for Hemsky then he should have simply traded him for our own 1st. Good GMs get full value for players.

That’s okay, if they do… I know some good parking spots near the paddledome.

    ashley,

Maybe MacT really wants Ekblad? Last thing we need are two goal games from Hemsky here on in. That’s not the new Oiler way! *sarcasm
