THE PARDUBICE PRINCE AND THE NOT VERY GOOD, VERY VERY BAD DAY

He arrived as a skinny teenage boy, and leaves us today a man. Ales Hemsky is the most beautiful, least understood Oiler of his generation—an icon’s talent with a pauper’s memories. It is the saddest damn thing.

KEVIN PRENDERGAST ON HIS FAVORITE DRAFT PICK

  • “Our staff works as a team and whomever the player is that we take we’re taking him as a team and there might be three or four scouts who don’t like the player but the other nine guys on staff do like him. My first pick was Ales Hemsky, and you certainly want him to play and I’m yearning for him to be a success and so far I think Ales is going to be.” -Kevin Prendergast to Guy Flaming, HF interview, August 15, 2003.

yost hemskyI don’t know where Hemsky is going—hell, maybe they’ll sign him later today—but San Jose is ideal and Ottawa fits but after last night’s game I don’t know if they’re buying. The Rangers keep getting mentioned and the Penguins have confirmed their interest.

  • Larry Brooks Sather — seeking depth on defense, and who isn’t? — has had conversations with the Oilers regarding rental winger Ales Hemsky, but the Rangers, who were first offered Hemsky during early-season inquiries about Nail Yakupov, are reluctant to yield the second-round draft pick sought by Edmonton.

Looks like it could come down to what happens with Callahan in NYC.

IMPROVED RECORD

mact common 5On December 27, the Oilers were 39GP, 12-24-3. In the 24 games since, Edmonton is 9-10-5. In their last 10: 6-2-2. The Corgi’s are still barking and the power play is mule stubborn, but the goaltending has been sublime. It won’t work long term, but it’s been a nice 10-game run in the results department.

  • MacTavish: “If we had an opportunity to do something that I thought was fair and legitimate we would have done it today but we’re going to be pushed to the deadline tomorrow. when that happens there’s a certain amount of risk at stake but right now we’re prepared to take the risk rather than settle for what’s been offered so far. I think, from talking to quite a few of my colleagues, that this is fairly standard practice right now.”

I believe the Oilers will move Hemsky, Nick Schultz and Ryan Smyth today. In my wildest dreams they would re-sign Hemsky and Smyth today, but if is for children.

MacTavish is satisfied with his goaltending, and it’s interesting to look back one year ago to the Ben Bishop deadline. Edmonton was very interested in the big goalie but lost out to a seemingly mediocre deal offered by Tampa Bay. One year later, the season lost, MacTavish added and signed Ben Scrivens and then traded yesterday for Viktor Fasth.

There’s 100 miles of difference between Steve Tambellini and Craig MacTavish. The turnover in net is a clear indication.

YESTERDAY

  • scrivens11MacT: We have two really good options next year. It’ll be a competitive position as it always is. Driving into the office (Tuesday), I thought if we could stabilize it for next year and check that box off. That was my objective going in.”

He also mentioned Richard Bachman (doing well in the AHL) and Laurent Brossoit (the future). The two NHL goaltenders and Brossoit are the major items in the Oiler goaltending arsenal. I think the NHL bets are solid, and Brossoit is dominant in the ECHL. We’ll see if he can cut it in the AHL (likely) beginning next season.

 AND TODAY

Ryan Smyth.

TRADE DEADLINE VALUE TABLE

  • Ales Hemsky: First-round draft pick (or a second and a fourth).
  • Nick Schultz: A third round pick.
  • Ryan Smyth: A fourth round pick.
  • Corey Potter: A fourth round pick.
  • Anton Belov: A fourth round pick.
  • Ilya Bryzgalov: A fourth round pick. **correctly predicted value**
  • Jesse Joensuu: A fourth round pick.
  • Taylor Fedun: A fourth round pick.
  • Mark Fraser: A fourth round pick.
  • Luke Gazdic: A fifth round pick.
  • Ryan Jones: A sixth round pick.
  • Denis Grebeshkov: A seventh round pick.
  • Ben Eager: A seventh round pick.

There may be some movement too among the minor league players, depending on how big these deals get today. Montreal was following OKC around all week and are apparently hot to unload Rene Bourque (can’t imagine why!) which may bring in Corey Potter or similar into the equation.

SAMWISE

gagner8

There hasn’t been a lot of talk about Gagner leading up to the deadline, but there’s a pulse after last night. He played well to my eye, and had his passing ability on full display. I doubt he’ll be dealt, but wanted to mention just in case.

TODAY, ALL WILL BE REVEALED

JONES111This morning at 10 on TSN 1260, Dave Jamieson will host a four hour special at the deadline. I’ll be part of a panel that includes Jason Strudwick, Jason Gregor, Guy Flaming and a cast of several. We’re devoting a lot of effort in order to bring you an Oiler focused deadline and will of course cover all of the big deals. Please ignore your work and listen!!!

Kesler apparently won’t waive his NTC to go to Columbus but Vanek/Moulsion would be good fits there.

Why are people surprised at the return? We all knew that the market value for Hemsky wasn’t what we hoped it would be. We have known this for 3 trade deadlines now. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to rehabilitate his value over the past two seasons. It happens.

You can’t blame MacT for this one. The only viable alternative was to sign him for a low cap hit deal, but it takes two to tango. He isn’t worth $5M per anymore, and if he wants to move on this summer to join Krejci or Jagr or whoever else, Hemmer has earned that right.

MacT tried his best to get the best value he could. This is it, folks. I said a couple of threads ago, that right or wrong, Hemsky’s perceived value was going to be less than Smid’s around the league. Penner has better numbers this year (and yes, I know he has been on a feature line most of the year) and he fetched a 4th. Robidas, a useful defenseman, fetched a 4th. Hemsky, a UFA unlikely to re-sign with either Ottawa or Pittsburgh, brought back a 3rd in a deep draft and a 5th.

Does it hurt? Absolutely. One of my favourite players ever. Is it fair value for his skills? No. Is it market value? Yes. Is MacT a fool? No. He did his very best.

In the coming days we can mourn the departure of the Pardubice Prince, but for now, we need to move on and try to maximize value for Smyth, Schultz, Jones, etc. If the Buffalo trade of McNabb, the Chicago trade of Pirri is any indication, it’s not just deadline rentals that are moving around. If real prospects are changing hands, MacT needs to get busy and kick the tires on what’s out there.

  8. BONVIE says:

ashley: But then why bother for that return.Sure, maybe he wasn’t going to sign here, but the return has almost no value.Hemsky for 20 games is worth more than a 3rd and a 5th, even if he signs elsewhere as an UFA.Plus, it gives time for him to change his mind and decide to sign here sometime before July 1.

That the Oilers are a worse team without Hemsky is incontrovertible. What has really been accomplished with this trade?

Third and fifth does have value, for future trades , and as many pointed out thats basically what they paid for Fasth. Mctavish sees picks as currency and rightly so, in contrast to the guy before him who threw away these picks for players that could be picked up on waivers eg. Brown and Smithson.

Umberger and Kesler have a bad history. CBJ on his no-trade list according to many, along with NYR for Vigneault, and any Canadian team.

Ahh, that’s right, I had forgotten about that rift in the continuum. What if he was to be traded FOR Umberger? lol

  14. icecastles says:

Dubnyk now a Hab. Funny how some guys spend years in a particular system then once they get traded the first time, they become a bouncing ball until they eventually bounce right out of the league. I think Duby’s leash as an NHL goalie is getting shorter…

That the Oilers are a worse team without Hemsky is incontrovertible. What has really been accomplished with this trade?

Sorry, but this is just wrong. 19 games of Hemsky is worth very little. It might give you a warm feeling to watch him chase rabbits around the ice but he is a .47 ppg player who at that rate would add a whopping 9 points the rest of the way. You are crying over 9 pts?.

An extra win or two that he might bring isn’t going to help morale much and will take the team further from Reinhart/ Ekblad.

That icetime is better used on a young player like Arcobello (who likely will put up as much offense) to see if he will fit in next year.

Plus draft picks ARE worth something. They can be used as currency (Fasth and Scrivens) and they occasionally turn into something. Ryan Callahan was a 4th rounder FFS.

This deadline day raises a hugely important conundrum. How did humanity ever survive without twitter?

  29. book¡je says:

Let’s be clear here. The really sad thing here is that the Oilers were managed terribly during Hemsky’s time here and that his contribution was not optimized by the team. It would have been great to see him be a part of a successful team here as he is a fun player to watch. His career in Edmonton has been wasted.

The trade makes sense. I don’t think Hemsky was willing to re-sign here. There is just too much negativity for the player. Last year, he was ready to move on but the trade wasn’t there. This is no different than how Luongo feels about leaving Vancouver. Keeping him would be pointless for the team and cruel to the player. MacT did the right thing.

I am glad for Hemsky as he gets a chance to play on a real NHL team. I am glad for the Oilers as they got something for a player who was leaving in two months anyway.

  30. Marcus Oilerius says:

You know, if a third and a fifth is all that we’d get in return, we might as well have shipped him off to a contender for slightly less.

  31. The Great One says:

Dubnyk assigned to Hamilton. Talk about stepping into a crevasse.

I’ve wondered about he or Legwand as potential short-term 2Cs until the likely C drafted this year (Reinhart or Bennett, as I expect Ekblad goes 1st overall) is ready for the NHL.

Or, you know, they could just plunk their 1st round pick straight into the NHL right out of junior.

Maybe, but that’s not what Mr. Kuzma tweeted.

  40. RexLibris says:

This was mentioned on the radio yesterday. The feeling was, if Kesler is going to Pittsburgh to play with Crosby and Malkin, he’d probably get over any reservations he might otherwise have had about W.

If he doesn’t, then he is an idiot.

That’s just pundit chin-wagging. I don’t agree with their feelings. I would play Malkin at wing and Kesler at C if that’s what who I was bringing in, and knowing how poorly Kesler’s time at W went. Malkin on either Sid’s line or Kesler’s, don’t matter. Or Kesler at 3C and on the PP and on the ice every DZone FO they get.

The fact that out of 29 GM’s, only one – who’ll probably not make the playoffs either – would make a crappy offer for Hemsky tells you what little value other GM’s see in him. MacT was not lying last summer.

This is good news. That means it should be easy for Hemsky to return to Edmonton, as he won’t have a lot of options.

I will cheer like heck for the Sens this spring, who were already my 2nd favorite team, and then watch Hemsky put Oiler silks back on in July for Erat money. Yakupov or Eberle will be moved by then.

    Normally I’d say keep dreaming.

But this is Snow, so really, I’m not sure even he knows what he would take for Tavares.

I would never go down that route of thinking if it wasn’t Snow in charge of that ship.

I’d do everything I could landing Tavares without trading any of the 3 #1′s and nurse.

Just saw that the Flames got a 2nd rounder for Berra.Given the market value for everyone else, this seems insane.Am I wrong?

Yeah. That does seem way out of whack. Sakic could have had Bryz, Fasth or Scrivens for less.

So basically, the players on the Oilers that are not the problem, they’re not worth much… and we appear to still be getting rid of them. And the players that are the problem can’t be given away. I wonder if the Oilers buy out any players this summer?

  195. VanOil says:

I would pick on Snow this summer by offering him Gagner for Brock Nelson and Griffen Reinhart. Snow is going to get bullied by other GMs if he is not fired. The agents during free agency are going to be even meaner.

Although cap was projected at $71.1M for 2014-15, @helenenothelen reports it could be as low as $68M due to decline in Canadian dollar.

I can’t see them shipping out Yakupov before Eberle unless Ebs can’t land them the fish they want. A GM like Snow will want Ebs before Yak, a GM like Lombardi will Demand Yak.

#Sabres turned Vanek (& McCormick) into 1st, 3x2nd round draft picks and Mitchell.

    #NYIslanders turned him (+ 5th) into Collberg + 2nd.

Actually, I might try a Gagner and Klefbom for Reinhart and Nelson.

Based on Klefbom’s near-catastrophic injury history and what we know about how this affects blueliner development (think Doug Lynch) we might be best to take the risk now rather than waiting.

Big surprise for me is the Ducks doing bugger all after trading Penner. I mean, who makes their team worse when you’re playoff bound? He had fantastic chemistry with Getzlaf and Perry..

Other surprise was how bad Snow is as GM. I mean, that was already well known.. but to this extent?

As for Hemsky.. sad to see him go, especially to a team he had just hurt the playoff chances of. He needed to go, for his own sake, however.

The Oilers, however, are now a decidedly worse team than they were twelve hours ago. Hemsky brought a lot more than just points (which weren’t that high.. but in far more limited opportunity than he’s used to).
