BARONS V STARS, G3 AHL PLAYOFFS

It is shocking how quickly time flies. Tonight may see the end of the line for several Oilers prospects who are entering their rfa summers. That list includes Curtis Hamilton (in photo by Rob Ferguson, all rights reserved), Anton Lander, Tyler Pitlick, Andrew Miller, Richard Bachman and Roman Horak. The UFA’s on the OKC roster include Taylor Fedun, Steve Pinizzotto and the apparently retiring Steve MacIntyre.

The Oilers 50-man List is going to fill up like mad here soon, it looks like this right now:

  1. Taylor Hall
  2. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
  3. Jordan Eberle
  4. David Perron
  5. Sam Gagner
  6. Nail Yakupov
  7. Boyd Gordon
  8. Matt Hendricks
  9. Jesse Joensuu
  10. Andrew Ference
  11. Martin Marincin
  12. Ben Scrivens
  13. Viktor Fasth
  14. Mark Arcobello
  15. Ryan Hamilton
  16. Will Acton
  17. Jujhar Khaira
  18. Mitchell Moroz
  19. Travis Ewanyk
  20. Kale Kessy
  21. Brad Hunt
  22. Oscar Klefbom
  23. Brandon Davidson
  24. David Musil
  25. Martin Gernat
  26. Dillon Simpson
  27. Jordan Oesterle
  28. Darnell Nurse (Slide rule)
  29. Laurent Brossoit
  30. Frans Tuohimaa
  31. Tyler Bunz

That leaves 19 or 20 openings, depending on what happens to Nurse. The RFA’s:

  1. Justin Schultz
  2. Jeff Petry
  3. Phil Larsen
  4. Luke Gazdic
  5. Andrew Miller
  6. Tyler Pitlick
  7. Curtis Hamilton
  8. Roman Horak
  9. Anton Lander
  10. Richard Bachman

Oilers have 16 signed forwards and another six who are RFA’s. They have 10 signed defenders, and three who are RFA. Edmonton has five signed goaltenders and one RFA. Total: 41.

I have to believe most of the forwards get signed, and that Bachman does too. The defense? Anyone’s guess. Most of the players signed are AHL level defenders so there’s room to add at the NHL level. Tonight’s game, which may include names like Klefbom and Nurse, may be the last chance for these men to impress their employers.

41/50 seems a fair amount of wiggle room. Hopefully all the draft picks remain in Jr or Europe and don’t join the list this year. Add 1 UFA forward and 1 UFA defender, make the rest of the changes through trades and you would maintain this flexibility through the year.

Flexibility that can be used on a training camp cut depth player, college free agents and the like. Mind you it takes the heat of the mythical 3 for 1 trade, which we all know is going to happen any day now.

Rumor has it Yak2 is on his way to make it 42 already.

  2. Lowetide says:

Yakimov, SlepSlappy, Gustafsson, McCarron are all possible. I wonder about Marco Roy, too.

  3. Moose says:

I still don’t understand how Fedun is a UFA. Seems like missing an entire season would have nullified any games played qualifiers for Group VI free agency, and he signed standard ELC out of college (at age 23), right?

  4. VanOil says:

    Lowetide,

Marco Roy was ahead of the class in the pre season, before the injuries set in. Let’s hope he can return to form. I am unsure if the Q or the A is the right place for him next year. Untimely injuries, a bugger that can ruin careers before they begin.

Chase skated by him as prospect standing still this year. I wonder if the Oilers try and engineer a WHL trade for Chase this off season. I am sure they would love him on the Oil Kings but from what I have seen with Kharia’s development Everett might be a good option as well.

  5. Lowetide says:

Roy actually closed really well, got to almost a point per game (35 in 39)

    http://theqmjhl.ca/roster/show/id/7412

he was 9GP, 6-3-9 to end the regular year.

  6. spoiler says:

I’m amazed that TSN actually showed that old Rolfe-Schultz fight from 1974 during the Flyers-Rags first period. Wow, what a different world it was back then. I mean I knew it was, but sometimes you have to see something to be reminded how different. Didn’t surprise me though to hear the Flyers show it on the scoreboard every pre-game.

Rolfe was a pretty good defenseman, too.

I was considering this very thought the other day…
Allowing Calgary to draft before Edm would make one hesitate… I would think.

Adding Gagner into the trade with NYI and it gets more interesting.

You’d have a new Pouliot to cheer for.

Just about every time the Oilers try to outsmart everyone else, they end up with egg on their face. The player they trade down for will instantly develop character issues, a lengthy injury history, or shrink four inches and 20lbs.

I can see Mact trading down. Unfortunately, you expect the return to be a current/future 2nd round pick +/- a 3rd rounder at best.

  12. spoiler says:

Lowetide: Rolfe was a pretty good defenseman, too.

Kindrachuk was at the edge of the crease, poking away at the Rangers’ goalie, not sure who but I will guess Giacomin, and Rolfe steps in to grab Orest and holy crap, Dave The Hammer comes flying in out of nowhere and starts punching Rolfe… Rolfe, who is a fair-sized guy, gets a couple in so Schultz grabs him by the hair, and just starts to feed him and then freakin head butts him twice.

I think it is nuts to trade out of a medium term solution to the 2nd centre problem. The Oilers have a very high probability of solving one of their problems in the medium term. 1) a top pairing defensemen in Ekblad, or 2) a 2nd top centre to go with Nugent-Hopkins in Bennett or Reinhart.

To trade out of that spot is probably a losing proposition.

If a legit top end top pairing D were coming back for the pick (plus), I would deal it. But that is about all I would deal it for.

Note: I don’t put Ehrhoff in that category, or Edler.

  14. Melman says:

    Gagner & #3 for Bailey and #5?

  15. spoiler says:

I would think that this Flyers-Rangers Game 7 has implications for Oiler fans… Snider and Homer are more likely to do something crazy at the draft if their playoffs are cut short here.

  16. Mr DeBakey says:

Melman: Gagner & #3 for Bailey and #5?

    Or
    Staal & the 7th for Gagner & the 3rd!

  17. Melman says:

Just for fun, if you think Edm.’s D is bad, have a look at what’s left on the Island…I don’t know how they’ll fix that mess.

Makes me wonder if Ekblad is still at #3 whether there’s a deal sending him away that could be worth considering – be it with NYI or elsewhere. With Nurse, Klefbom, Marincin, Simpson (plus the tier 2 group) coming. A trade of #3/Ekblad may bring back the biggest return coupled with the relatively smallest decrease in the talent left behind. That would be bold.

  18. spoiler says:

Trading down would be incredibly stupid. No one is trading anything real to move up a couple of spots, and trading down means you could lose your target if he gets picked ahead of you. Just ain’t worth it. Even less so in a weak draft.

  19. Melman says:

    Mr DeBakey,

    which one? both have NTCs

  20. bendelson says:

    Melman:
    Gagner & #3 for Bailey and #5?

    Not enough in my estimation.

    Couturier – 0 points.
I haven’t watched the series but that has to be disappointing for the Flyers…

LT is typing so fast that he mis-spelled “Gords.”

In that trade-down scenario, what would EDM have to add to get Brock Nelson in return as the nice thing?

  22. spoiler says:

    bendelson: Couturier – 0 points.
I haven’t watched the series but that has to be disappointing for the Flyers…

That’s exactly what I was thinking about.

  23. Hammers says:

Trading down a few spots may be the smartest move McT can make especially if he picks up a piece we need . You have to love all the implications a move like that could bring . Maybe it would be a Bold move .

  24. OilLeak says:

Lander with the score for the Barons, he can sure put up the points in the AHL, with time I still think he can have an NHL career.

  25. Lowetide says:

    Lander scored, 2-1 Texas now.

  26. russ99 says:

As for the 50 contract thingy, I expect a lot of names off that list to be gone before camp.

Especially 1-2 names in the 1-8 range and approximately half in the 9-21 range, discounting the 2 NHL goalies.

An AHL goalie and a prospect D could also be off the list.

As for the RFAs – only Schultz, Petry and Gazdic are safe.

  27. OilLeak says:

OKC doesn’t have a chance in this series without Arcobello. The forwards are just not good enough. (minusLander, Horak, etc,)

  28. B-Dog says:

If you can trade down and still get your guy then you do that everytime. Problem is you might be left with the ugly partner at the dance.

  29. Lowetide says:

Brad Hunt ties it at 2!

  30. spoiler says:

And TSN throws up a list of top CF% teams that made the playoffs… Minnesota first, Colorado last. Johnson even said the words Corsi For and related it to puck possession. The revolution is over. Fancy is now mainstream..

  31. OilLeak says:

Bachman could have played that better.

  32. OilLeak says:

OKC playing Oilers hockey now, making a bunch of backwards passes in the defensive zone and getting eaten alive.

  33. Derek says:

Nurse makes the opposition forwards make a lot of mistakes with his aggressive speed and long reach but man is he ever chaotic.

  34. OilLeak says:

Small sample and all, but Nurse has been awful. Has been exposed tonight.

  35. Melman says:

    OilLeak,

This may be one of the beneficial outcomes of the OKC playoffs – showing mgmt. more time in junior is the best place for him.

  36. Marcus Oilerius says:

Nurse having some growing pains is for the best.

Otherwise next season we’d be starting with 3 guys with less than a season under them. Two is bad enough, three spells catastrophe.

  37. Melman says:

    spoiler,

maybe that will wiggle him loose

  38. OilLeak says:

    Melman,

Well it’s NHL or Junior for Nurse and he’s definitely not ready for the NHL yet.

  39. OilLeak says:

Barons lose 4-2 and are eliminated from the playoffs.

  40. spoiler says:

    Melman: spoiler,
maybe that will wiggle him loose

That would be the hope. That pick would be put to better use obtaining something we need that can help us now. It will be tough to turn down Ekbkad though if he’s still on the board and that pretty much needs to happen to get Philly to deal.

  41. Rondo says:

Look at Logan Couture SJ baked him slowly and now he is a star.

  42. bendelson says:

spoiler: That would be the hope. That pick would be put to better use obtaining something we need that can help us now.It will be tough to turn down Ekbkad though if he’s still on the board and that pretty much needs to happen to get Philly to deal.

    Exactly my thoughts as well.
Another issue with this scenario is i can’t see the Oilers not running to the podium to draft Ekblad if given the opportunity.

Regarding the LA/SJ game – what the hell are the referees doing?
Calling the borderline crap and letting the actual penalties go… Or said another way, fucking up and then fucking up further in reaction to the previous fuck up.

This is not going to end well.

  43. Rondo says:

    bendelson,

Hockey has been great this year in the playoffs. Refs have been horrible.

  44. Rebilled says:

    Damn, they’re firing Torts.

  45. crude says:

Brhyz in for the wild, game 7 OT.
A nice chance to improve his numbers in the series…

  46. Gerta Rauss says:

Bryzgalov through to round 2 of the playoffs

  47. russ99 says:

Bryz came in cold and shut em down.

Good deal. They’re toast vs. the Hawks, but it’s good to see Bryz win.

The Kings winning after being down 3-0 in the series is very disheartening. I hope the Sharks can make a game of it in the time left.

The sooner LA and Boston are eliminated, the sooner other teams (ahem) stop trying to copy that style of hockey.

  48. teddyturnbuckle says:

I agree, trading down would be a terrible idea. This might be our last chance to get a star. Besides, those trades don’t happen anymore.

  49. Lynas1 says:

    Lowetide,

If it were me, I think I’d only do it if both Bennett and Ekblad are gone. I’ve been high on Bennett since I heard button rave about his off the charts compete and playing a big mans game. That part at least reminded me of what people say about Brendan Gallagher. That’s the kind of smallish player you want.

  50. regwald says:

    LT,

Are you going to do a OKC Barons wrap up post or two ? Evaluate the season ? the players ? who’s coming who’s going ?

Maybe check in with those fine bloggers from OKC for their insight ?

    thanks
