WING AND A PRAYER

The Edmonton Oilers aren’t going to bring back Ryan Smyth next season. I felt he earned another year, but if the club plans to move on from Smyth, it suggests the ‘line in the sand’ for next year is everyone from Smyth down the pecking order. If you played at a level below Smyth—and you’re playing significant minutes—then next season is not promised to you. I’d say wingers below Hall, Ebs, Perron and Yakupov are in some danger.

DANIEL WINNIK PLAYING CARD

winnik es

If you take Ryan Jones money ($1.5M), can you get Daniel Winnik at $2.2M? He’s making $1.8M currently.

DAVID MOSS PLAYER CARD

moss esCan you take the Smyth money ($2.25M) and sign David Moss? Maybe Boyd Gordon can be conduit fpr both?

The decision to send Ryan Smyth into retirement cannot be met with low level signings and trades. If the Oilers replace Smyth with Matt Hendricks contract, MacT was just giving lip service last summer:

  • MacT:  “The year we went to Cup final [2006] we had lots of guys who could contribute offensively and last year we really didn’t. We had a lot of one or two or zero goal scorers who were out there a really the best you could hope for was they were a non-negative factor. We have to let the core players continue to develop a and we have to build that supporting cast around them.”

Ryan Smyth scored 10 goals this season, and did the hard work of making things go with 4′s and 2′s. Surely his retirement signals an upgrade on the 3 and 4lines.

Boychuk, Moss, and Winnik are all 30-something and will be entering the fall-off-the-cliff mode of their careers. And one always has to offfer too much term.

Overpaid and term heavy 30-something free agents are death to future contending.

How many contracts between superbad (Clarkson), bad(Ference), and too effing long (Hendricks) can the Oilers take on.

So one gets two good years, but the last two years on the contracts you are going to have to give those guys are fatal. And I thought we were supposed to be looking for guys who can provide some bottom six offense.

Perron style deals are what the Oilers should be looking for. Established vets with only one-or-two years left on their contracts from teams looking to free up cap space.

Gagner for Clifford would be a better deal. You get rid of your own dubious contract for a younger version of Winnik or Moss who will be entering their prime when you want to contend.

  10. godot10 says:

i.e. The 2006 Oilers were built on getting Smith, Staios, Moreau, Grier, Marchant, Reasoner, etc, in their mid-twenties.

The OIlers fell off a cliff, when they gave 4-year contracts to 30-something Moreau’s and Staios.

The Oiler blogosphere is filled with goldfish.

Winnik the first time you mentioned him 3 years ago was a good idea. He is much less of a good idea now.

Moss, Winnick, Downie, Kulimin, are a few who could fit the bill nicely next to Gordon

    frjohnk,

I like Downie a lot on paper, but we need to remember that !) despite his style, he isn’t a size upgrade at all, and 2) Something happened in Colorado that motivated them to take dimes on the dollar for the guy. We all know how the hockey world works- just because a guy has been traded four times doesn’t necessarily mean anything- but there is smoke. You suss that out before you fax him a contract.

  14. slopitch says:

I think the reality is that the improvement has to come from within or via trade. Coming to Edmonton is far from attractive right now and the overpay will be too dear. The Oilers have a decent amount of cap space and youth to acquire more players. Free agency is a fools game unless your buying post July 10.

    Man I’m gonna miss Smytty.

    How about these lines…

    Hall RNH Eberle
    Jager Hanzel Yak
    Perron Gordon Kulemin
    Hendricks Boyle Arco

Couple of players playing at different positions but the size works throughout the lineup. Not sure what it would take to get hanzel..Our 1st plus gagner and top prospects.. Yak would have a lot of room out there with those vets.

  18. RexLibris says:

If you subtract Smyth, Jones, Jonesuu (probably waived at the start of the year), and build your 3/4 lines around Gordon, Hendricks, Gazdic and Pitlick/Lander then adding Winnik and Moss/Kulemin is an improvement.

It should help chip in at least a few more goals amongst the bottom 6 and also gives Eakins some other candidates for the PK so that the top six (read: RNH) can rest.

Here, here! Columbian Marching Powder for all! Clockwork Orange the lot of ‘em! Hunter, I would love it if the Oilers could top the Canucks’ season off with a big steaming turd on their organisation. If people think that we as Oiler fans are unrealistic in our hope, then that is nothing compared to the sense of entitlement that club has. I love all my friends from Vancouver, until it comes to Hockey. Then they turn into the biggest douches ever. One will come out with a hockey-smart comment like “Hall wouldn’t make the Canucks’ 3rd line.” And they’d be serious and agree with each other. They honestly believe they’re owed a cup. If Khaira and Chase aren’t playing for the Oilers in the near future my name isn’t Glen Sather!
Khaira is the big body so many Oilerites crave. Can win a draw, finishes his checks, saw him skating fast through the neutral zone, tough to get off the puck in the ozone, and always
back deep to help out the D. Saw him out on the PK which speaks to Nelson’s confidence in him.
He could be a gem. I think he gets a full ride in OKC.

Haven’t seen a lot of Chase outside of that one Ozone sequence tonight. Looked very good supporting the puck and making the tape to tape diagonal pass to his d-man. Oh….and he plowed over the Heat goalie and made no apologies.

Well, The Oiler’s top two lines aren’t scoring ether.

    5×5 the Oilers are 29th

    GF/G the Oilers sit 27th with 2.40 – the Oilers GA/G the Oilers sit 30th with 3.27.
I’m not sure where the Oilers are going to manufacture offense from?

Frankly overpaying for third and fourth liners is lunacy at best.

MacTavish has hinted that the defense might only get a minor upgrade, the Oilers defense lacks almost zero contribution 5×5, again, where is the offense going to come from on D, where is that balance that successful teams have?

If the Oilers go into next season only fixing the third and fourth lines again while not adding to the teams overall scoring through defense and the top two line then will be talking about McDavid & Eichel.

Mason Raymond (could sign here if dollars were right)

Nikolai Kulemin (could sign here if dollars were right)

Matt D’Agostini (who hasn’t played a full season since 2010-2011)

Honestly from that list I would be happy with any two other than D’Agostini. If I am going by guys who may sign here: Raymond and Setoguchi would be nice.

    719,

I like the list I would target Kulemin & Steguchi off of the list, they could both be value signings. Last year was the year to get Raymond.

Player – Age – Pts/60 last three seasons
    Setoguchi – 27 – 1.316, 2.217, .951 – Setoguchi has a 978 PDO. Could be a good candidate to get.
    Kulemin – 27 – 1.228, 1.764, 1.352 – Prior ot getting heavy zone starts he put up pts/60 of 2.293, 1.84.

Depending on term Milan Michalek might be a good option. He can score but he his knees aren’t going to hold up much longer.

A guy that’s I would target if the Oilers trade Gagner is PM Bouchard. Can play W & C
PM Bouchard – PM Bouchard – 29 – 1.086, 1.817, 1.858 (PDO of 937 this year.) – He would likely be cheap and easy, er I mean. Easy to sign and it wouldn’t cost us much.

I also, hope they try and target someone via trade. These teams; Hawks, Bruins, Sharks, Pens, Rangers, Canes might be looking to shed a contract for cap purposes.

    cahill,

    Cahill excellent points.

Dependent on trading partner, I like PM Bouchard, there are a host of other guys as well. Bickell could be a good fit, Dwight King as well. Bickell does have a modified NTC. With the Hawks against the cap already next season, and the Oilers able to retain salary (as we are no where near the cap), Bickell may be a trade target. We could send over a Lander or Gagner (and retain some of his salary), if the Hawks are interested.

    Eberle 6 57th
    RNH 6 57th
    Smyth 5 79th
    Yak 4 104th

    Even Goals:
    Hall 20 24th
    eberle 20 24th
    Perron 19 34th
    RNH 12 137th
    Gagner 9 187th
    Yak 7 239th
    Gordon 6 260th
    Smyth 5 287th
    Hendricks 4
    Arco 3
    jones, Jeonsuu, gazdic 2

    J. schultz 10
    Petry 5
    Feremnce 5

    Lets look at EVG from fwd 1-3 – 4-6 – 7-9 – EVG total – top 6fwdPPG – Overall G

    EDM 59 – 28 – 15 = 102 – 35 PPG = 138
    CHI 66 – 49 – 32 = 147 + 37 = 184
    SJS 63 – 42 – 29 = 134 – 37 = 171
    STL 59 – 42 – 30 = 131 – 36 = 167
    ANA 79 – 41 – 26 = 146 – 33 = 179
    COL 61 – 48 – 27 = 136 – 36 = 172
    PHI 53 – 38 – 31 = 122 – 50 = 172
    WPG 55 – 43 – 26 = 124 – 25 = 149
    BOS 68 – 48 – 27 = 143 – 27 = 170
    PIT 63 – 37 – 17 = 117 – 49 = 166
    CGY 54 – 31 – 22 = 107 – 21 = 128

there is a reason we are bottom of the league.
part of it was getting D and Goal.
Marincin; Klefbom; Scrivens are making a GA difference.

RNH; Gagner; Yak are 18 EVG short.
Gordon; hendricks ZS says 4th numbers.
They are above average for cmp and ZS
3rd’s made up of jeonsuu; jones; gazdic are 20 EVG short.

there is no argument to this!

Smyth’s goals need to be replaced!
