Even though I didn’t follow them closely this year, I felt so happy for those kids as the final minute wound down. No matter what happens to any of these kids after this, nothing can take this away from them. Congratulations. You took a hard, hard road but you made it.

Everyone on this team is emptied and blissful.

    Zen moment.

Congrats Oil Kings! Maybe some day I’ll be able to shorten that sentence by 2 letters and one space…

Congrats to the Oil Kings, they were certainly the better team. Can’t wait to see Moroz in the pros. I’ll remember the Jarry saves in OT in the semi. Well done.

Just finished up watching on PVR. Congrats to the Oil Kings! Like that Moroz kid. Too bad they werent able to get Samuelson. Kulda the MVP did a lot for his draft stock. 2 hockey championships in Edmonton in a year!

  10. Racki says:

Done Pelss proud. Gotta wonder how much deeper these kids dug after wanting to win it for him.

Great win, and well deserved. I thought Guelph looked pretty human by comparison. Great top line.. not much outside that. Hard to believe it was Edmonton that had the triple OT on Friday.

  11. blainer says:

What a great game. Sure wish we could have drafted Samuelson as well with Moroz. Watching Moroz play reminds me very much of Clowe. His skating and reach are eerily similar as well as their physical game. He looks slow but his strides are long and deceptive. I really think we have a player there. I have thought Clowe’s skating was always way under NHL caliber but I think a lot of big players look like that including Penner.

tried to figure out why you cribbed the roster… then I figured it out.

    good story, Rom!

Yes. What an incredible story, and one to remember. I’m just thrilled they did it, man that’s a hard trophy to win. I remember the 1971 and 1974 winners from my youth, and then pretty much all of them since they hit television.

  14. BasketKate says:

Feels soooooo good! I remember being really disappointed when the “Ice” left for Kootenay. I’m really glad the Oil Kings were rebooted… And the whole Pelss story line makes for some intense emotions.

It’s amazing how a personal tragedy can galvanize a group. I think we saw something similar with Marty St. Louis and the Rangers willing their way past Pittsburgh.

It really is. To not only be the best of your league, but beat the best of the other 2 leagues (plus host).. that’s a tough thing to do. I just hope the Oil Kings can keep putting a winner together. It’s of course hard to do with all the turnover, but this is definitely one team we can all be thankful Katz owns.

Yah, it’s hard not to think the Rangers have been trying to make Marty’s days a bit happier.

Opened that graphic in a new tab and saw the afterthought MVP. Before the playoffs thought he’d go 7th round on try 3. But the karma’s got afterburners.

    Lowetide,

Crib is a games of Fancy stats and heavy drinking. The drink being a performance enhancing drug that allows you plausibly deny that you are cheating when counting the points.

Cropped is the word we’re looking for, I’m guessing.

Atta be Oil Kings. Good stuff.

cropped is the word I would have used if I knew what I was looking at.

because it looked like LT hacked up the roster in a weird way, cribbed was the right word.

Phoenix GM was very negative on Samuelson the other day. Praising other prospects more and complaining that Samuelson does not move his feet enough. It might be tough love but it did not sound like love at all. Does the GM have a point is Samuelson slow or lazy? He is defiantly big and has skill.

IIRC he wasn’t terribly rosy about Domi either.

I think that might just be a case of personality type. Maybe he’s more of a sulk, or pessimistic pete, than the rest.

    or, he’s more realistic?

  27. Zangetsu says:

Was there ever even a question with the immoortal cole benson playing for the allies.

  28. jzed says:

Just watched post game interviews, Laxdall built a team, and guided his boys through the early portion of their journey toward manhood. Moroz, in particular, impressed me with his maturity and heartfelt honesty, I would not bet against him getting to the show. Laxdall should be moved to the AHL with the Barons while Nelson moves up to the big (?) club. Getting results with what you’ve got should be rewarded if the brain trust is serious about ‘changing the culture’ around this team. Send an appropriate message to all the present coaching staff.

  29. Philosophil says:

    Lowetide,

Great article LT. Brought a tear to my eye. After all the analytics, Corgi’s, blogs, and 27 knives used to slice the hockey pie, this is why we play, or live vicariously to do so.

  30. nycoil says:

Congrats to the Oil Kings! Helluva team and they deserved this feather in the cap. I think most of us would have considered them a great success for the last 3 years in the WHL alone, but nice for them to get national recognition with the Mem Cup.

I just got back home from attending Game 4 at MSG. A few observations…
    1) The refs did their best to give Montreal as many PPs as possible to tie the series (and I am an unbiased observer in this case and was rooting for Montreal to tie the series and make it interesting)
    2) I wish the Oilers could find a McDonagh or Subban. One of those “five tool” guys on D. How much better would the team be if we had one? So much better.
    3) Markov still has plenty left to offer. I think he would be a big benefit for next year, neutral at worst for the year after, and probably a liability if we go a third year. I’d still do it just to get him in the door. $7m, $6m, $5m for $6m cap hit.
    4) Can we find a Carl Hagelin somewhere?
    5) Tyler Dellow was asking why Benoit Pouliot is so undervalued by teams. The answer was right there in overtime. Needless offensive zone holding the stick penalty, followed by lazy play not taking one more stride over the redline before dumping the puck in, resulting in an icing. He has great possession numbers and I see him always taking the puck away, but man does he consistently have brain farts. The Edmonton fan base wouldn’t be able to stand him.

Good night and congrats again to the Oil Kings!

nycoil: Benoit Pouliot is so undervalued by teams.

He was one of the 4 players i wanted in FA last year.
Those guys that are better with than without.
    pouliot
    Boyes
    Wellwood
    Klinkhammer but PHX signed.

  32. nycoil says:

    rickithebear,
Yes, and he is a free agent again this summer and I have been pushing for him. But if they get him the fans will lament the boneheaded, lazy o-zone penalties he tends to take. Otherwise possession stats love him just fine. He also has skills but no finish. Like a Petry or Gilbert the fans will likely dislike him.

Congratulations to the 2014 Memorial Cup Champ Oil Kings you make us proud Edmontonians still worthy of the moniker ‘City of Champions’. A team that showed commitment, sacrifice, discipline, teamwork and a will to win at all costs.

I saw a glimpse of some special physiotherapy they had to accelerate their muscles on their day off.
Not sure what it was but they obviously benefitted from it. Good on the Oil for providing that.
