2014 DRAFT: DAY ONE

The climax to the season—Edmonton Oiler edition—arrives tonight after work. Edmonton is once again sitting up front, the seventh time in eight seasons they’ll select in the top 10 overall. Next year, let’s hope for second row tables (hurrah!).

The Oilers really can’t miss in their current spot (No. 3 overall) and if they trade down one expects a good NHL center will be part of the return. This is an exciting day to be an Oiler fan, and if I’m a betting man it’s the big German who will be an Oiler by 6 o’clock Edmonton time.

yak draft

OILERS 2014 DRAFT (LT PROJECTION)

  • #3 overall -C Leon Draisaitl—This is a fine hockey player. No one should be surprised if he goes No. 3 overall.
  • #33 overall DAVID PERRON (for this pick and Magnum PS)
  • #63 overall BEN SCRIVENS
  • #91 overall G Ilya Sorokin—Not at all famous, but he stops pucks in the Hinterland.
  • #111 overall R Alex Schoenborn—Size and skill.
  • #130 overall D Nelson Nogier—Big, mobile stay at home defender.
  • #137 overall NIKITA NIKITAN
  • #153 overall L Anthony DiFruscia—No one has mentioned him yet.
  • #183 overall R Jaedon Descheneau—Skill out the ass.

It’s going to be a fun weekend, I’d love to see a pick or two acquired by MacTavish during the next 24 hours or so. This is a weird draft, I expect we’ll be scrambling with some of the names that come off the board early.

Remember our conversations earlier, because dammit I’ll be reminding you of it for the next five years: historically, we have every right to expect a Jason Arnott-career from No. 3 overall, and the ENTIRE rest of the Oilers draft (as it sits) should reasonably fetch a career somewhere between Teemu Hartikainen and Zack Stortini. This is the 2008 draft all over again, no use pretending it isn’t.

Having said that, Edmonton will walk away from this draft with a future linchpin up the middle (D or C), part of a dynamic winger in Perron, their starting goalie and a contributing NHL defenseman. For Edmonton, the draft should be considered a success the moment they announce a justifiable name at No. 3 overall.

hall21The Lowdown is back! TSN 1260, 10 this morning. It’s a fluid show (believe me) but we’ll have Corey Pronman (ESPN) and Dustin Nielson (TSN 1260) on the air from the draft, and Bruce McCurdy (Cult of Hockey) and Paul Almeida (Saturday Sports Extra) on from the studio. We’ll also have Steve Lansky to talk about putting on a major television event and funny moments from his past in live television.

And of course, by popular demand, Dennis King. He’ll rip the Oilers to shreds over the Nikitin trade and signing, and I have a feeling Scott Howson is going to pay a price.

dreger boyleI wonder if they would? Probably not, but if you’re going to spend money on defense, there aren’t many targets this summer. I think some of the numbers are going to be shocking.

It’s draft day, ladies and men. I honestly don’t care which of the four they draft tonight, just make a sweet swing based on your best information. If the Oilers draft Leon Draisaitl, I think he probably starts in the NHL next season. Same for Ekblad. The two Sams? Probably another year.

One final thing: If today is goodbye to Sam Gagner, and it could be, I hope he lands in a very good place. He arrived in Edmonton at a time when the organization was selling hope and little else, and played here during the darkest days in franchise history. I wish him well, here or there.

Prediction:

  1. Florida: Ekblad
  2. Buffalo: Reinhart
  3. Edmonton: Draisaitl
  4. Calgary: Bennett
  5. NY Islanders: Ritchie

  1. RexLibris says:

The Oilers need to draft a C at the top of the draft order.

They can’t trade for them and they can’t sign them as UFAs.

    They need to draft them.

Trading down is not really an option for this team right now.

I can’t think of another thing to say so that I could begin my fifth sentence with a “T”. Blast.

  2. RexLibris says:

Some Flames fans are hearing rumours about Flames and Hurricanes swapping picks (4th for 7th) in exchange for Cam Ward.

I’d like to think I live in a world where this could happen, but I’m not that optimistic.

  3. Rondo says:

    Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger · 2m
Brad Treliving and Tim Murray in discussions away from the pack. Murray told me earlier if Fla trades the pick Buf will trade down.

That means he wants Reinhart or is trying to get business

  4. Shau-co says:

I think the Oilers have Ekblad ahead of Draisatl. Just a gut feel, but the media keep cramming Draisatl down our throats which just keeps reminding me of Ryan murray versus Yakupov. Assuming we even get to choose between the two of course…

  5. RexLibris says:

Dale Tallon on the phone right before the draft.

Lions have scratched Lulay before the game.

Put the pieces together and I think we have our trade. Bold of the Lions scooping their provincial cousins.

  6. RexLibris says:

Hey LT, how are your nerves? Did you pace yourself today?

This twitter thing is murder on us anxious types.

  7. Derek says:

Did someone ask for a stream?

    Try: http://u-peak.me/STV1.html

    For Edmonton I’d prefer:
    Bennett
    Draisaitl
    Reinhardt
    Ekblad

I really hope Burke takes Ritchie at 4.

  8. Lynas1 says:

    Woodguy: Me too.

I think that if its Bennett vs Ekblad for #3 that taking Ek is a mistake.

Oilers are deep on D prospects, but man could they use another C.

Bennett is the #1 rated player by most fancystat guys and I’m on board with that.

Agree. Though the other option is to trade some of our older D prospects for C prospect depth. We wait.

  9. skidplate says:

Lowetide: Not for me. I don’t trust the Oilers to stay away from Nick Ritchie at No. 6 overall.

But if you could get Virtanen and Barbashev and Shinkaruk for 3rd. Sounds like a good trade.

  10. Lowetide says:

skidplate: But if you could get Virtanen and Barbashev and Shinkaruk for 3rd. Sounds like a good trade.

No sir. I want my up the middle best player available. There are 4 lights!

OK, OK, I will be assimulated.

Let’s do this!! Be bold, MacT and MacG.

    RexLibris:
Hey LT, how are your nerves? Did you pace yourself today?

This twitter thing is murder on us anxious types.

I’m feeling calm. Oilers will get one of Reinhart, Draisaitl or Ekblad is my guess, and I’m fine with all.

  15. Mr DeBakey says:

    RexLibris:
    Philly over the cap.

Petry and a prospect for Coburn?

    No!
The Oilers have to ADD NHL players.

    Is Coburn better than Petry?
    I doubt it.

  16. franksterra says:

    Lowetide,

Me too. But taking Ekblad makes #2 C more urgent – do they go lower tier, like Legwand, Goc, or full bore out of the trunk for Stasny or Spezza?

  17. Kitchener says:

Lowetide: I’m feeling calm. Oilers will get one of Reinhart, Draisaitl or Ekblad is my guess, and I’m fine with all.

Yes, and today’s #3 will join a constellation already containing Yak, Nuge, Nurse & Hall. The Oilers’ fate does not rest on this pick alone. All we need is a 2C or an Ekblad. I see no possible downside to the next 30 minutes.

Edit: … unless they trade a first & ___ for Dustin Penner again :)

  18. skidplate says:

    drum roll

  19. Derek says:

Thank you Philly, show LA how this is done.

  20. frjohnk says:

    Philly booing Bettman. Love it!

  21. nycoil says:

Philly fans sure know how to boo people! Ha ha

  22. skidplate says:

    The booing is getting old

  23. godot10 says:

If Reinhart goes #1 because of a Vancouver trade, Murray knows he can trade down to #4 and still get Bennett, because of Oilers public PR campaign to justify Draisaitl at #3.

Burke traded up to pick Pronger, and left Kariya on the board.

  24. russ99 says:

Ah, the traditional booing of Bettman. :)

The Philly fans do it so well.

  25. skidplate says:

    ekblad

  26. nycoil says:

    skidplate:
    The booing is getting old

Booing Bettman never gets old. Besides, this is Philly. They boo Santa Claus.

  42. Derek says:

Do the right thing Craig, take the guy with wheels and defensive acumen.

  43. RexLibris says:

Rom – I feel as though I should be giving you a cigar, like a proud papa.

  44. Jon K says:

This is a big test. The higher rated player or the bigger player? I suspect the German is coming aboard.

  45. RexLibris says:

Dust off Josef Beranek’s old #29 and bring on Leon.

  46. striatic says:

Looks like it’ll be Draisaitl. MacT verbal on Size too clear.

  50. gr8one says:

Man, this is a tough call, I really didn’t believe Bennett would fall to third, he’s BPA IMO, hate for the Oilers to pass on him, although I won’t be too disappointed if it’s Drais.

    NYC = New York City
I’m in the city. If you tell people in the East Coast of the US you’re from New York the immediate next question is where in New York (upstate like Buffalo, Long Island, etc.).

It did occur to me that the “COIL” bit has the negative implication to it, but given the current state of affairs I thought the touch of irony–or is it even ironic since we really do suck– works just nicely given I’ve been a die-hard fan for 30+ years.

    nycoil,

You’ve got that right. I guess as fans, we can not expect much when our team leaves coils in every arena in the league. Hopefully we get back to the winning ways sooner than later.

Bennet’s own GM says he’s “full of it” :)

Good matchup between Baby Nuge vs Benett, and Draisatl vs Monahan.
I see our C’s drawing penalties there, I hope our fans don’t run Leon out of town because he doesn’t punch faces.

Lets not plan any parades, but hey, this team looks to have better coaching and better players than last.
