COME BACK, ALES!!!!

Reports tonight that Ales Hemsky and the Senators are not close to a contract agreement, and in fact discussions have broken off between the two sides. Music!!! Ales, come back!

hemsky news111

Would you? Hell men, I’d sign Ales and Dustin and put the band back together, giggling like an idiot until long past midnight. Bringing Hemsky back in opens up trade options, and good lord Henry we saw what he could do with a real center while in Ottawa.

Come back, blue boy. Bring Gunnar’s son with you.

I normally despise sequels, but I’d go for Ales In Oilerland II.

  2. LostBoy says:

I’d welcome him back in a nanosecond, though his performance in Ottawa might mean he’s well out of our price range, given other needs. I have zero idea what might be in his head, but part of me also wants to see Hemmer run free with the horses for real while there’s still time, putting up 70+ points again on a contending club. I’d love that to be the Oilers but, well, you know. One fantasy scenario is trading for Spezza and signing Hemsky. Spezza with a year left, the price tags involved, etc. etc., I know. But by god we’d suddenly be a different hockey club.

  3. Younger Oil says:

Hemsky has done more than his fair share of time with the Oil. Let the guy go to a good team, and get a taste of winning and playoffs again. He’s earned it, and deserves it more than any other NHLer I can think of. Invite him back with open arms if he wants to come back after getting a taste of the post season again.

Pancakes on the other hand has won a cup since leaving, and he’d be a welcome addition to the team if he wants to come back. Hemsky would be welcome too, but he definitely deserves better.

  4. jfry says:

Ales wants to dangle and win. Why would he come back? He would look really good as a havlat replacement in sjs or a vanek do-over in Brooklyn. We showed his talent level absolutely zero respect the last few years. It is too bad. On most nights last year, horcoff, hemsky and Penner would have been our first line.

Let him go in peace. We are the girlfriend that cheated on him. Let him go and heal and find a new life. Let us continue to struggle with reality.

  5. teddyturnbuckle says:

Zero chance Hemsky comes back to Edmonton. His shackles have been freed and he is headed for a good team.

  6. Jordan says:

If Ales is willing to come back, does that make it more likely that the Oilers trade Yakupov?

That sure seems like a great way to get value for the team…

    Yakupov + 2015 2nd??? to Florida for 1st OV = Ekblad!
    3rd OV = Leon!
Gagner + Schultz + to Toronto for Phaneuf + 8 OV = Virtanen!
Sign Hemsky, Grabbo Kulemen = 2nd line
    Sign Fayne
    Winnik

    Hall – RNH – Ebs
    Kulemen – Graovski – Hemsky
    Peron – Gordon – Winnik
    Hendricks – Arcobello – Lander
    Gazdick

    D corps
    Phaneuf – Petry
    Fayne – Marincin
    Ferrence – Ekblad
    Engellend – Klefbom

I don’t know if that makes the playoffs, but I think that can compete, and it brings in a A LOT of high potential players both on the back end, and on the front end with both size and skill.

Now, to go solve the Canadian Senate problem…

  7. Racki says:

    a) Hemsky asked for $5.5M in Ottawa. Too much to fill the real needs this team has.
    b) Hemsky would probably rather jam needles in his eyes than come back to this stressful city.

    ..

    c) I wouldn’t mind it at all if he was back. Especially if Penner was as well… that duo might get the most out of Gagner in the middle too.

    ..

    d) Who am I kidding? Time to start looking forward, isn’t it?

    ..

    e) let’s go back to c) again!

  8. Woodguy says:

Ales Hemsky is a bad, bad man.

  9. Woodguy says:

Seriously LT, he just got out of the gulag and you want him to come back?

Let Ales run and play with Actual NHL players before he has to hang them up.

  10. Woodguy says:

After Ales put up a 17pts in 20gp playing with Spezza I’m sure more than a few GM’s pulled their collective heads out of their asses.

I think Lou will grab him.

Elias, Jagr and Zidlicky will talk him into it.

  11. bendelson says:

Good for Ales to test the UFA market.
    Take a small discount from last year’s 5M and pick a contender…

  12. VanOil says:

I like Ales to much for him to have to suffer through more years of Oilers hockey.

  13. Lowetide says:

    Woodguy:
Seriously LT, he just got out of the gulag and you want him to come back?

I hope he sails into Stanley, but selfishly I’d love to see his return.

  14. Racki says:

Lowetide: I hope he sails into Stanley, but selfishly I’d love to see his return.

Why do you hate Ales Hemsky so much that you’d put him through this?

  15. VanOil says:

This trade rumor is amusing: Dion Phanuef, Nazem Kadri and the eighth pick in the 2014 NHL Draft to the Panthers for veteran defenseman Ed Jovanovski and the first overall pick

    http://editorinleaf.com/2014/06/03/nhl-trade-rumors-toronto-maple-leafs-florida-panthers-blockbuster-works/

It would mean the Oilers get neither Phanuef or Ekblad but I am OK with that.

  16. OilClog says:

Hemsky will sign with the Devils.

I’ll be very sad the Oilers aren’t the Devils.

We need so many players, like 20. Face Palm.

  17. Romulus Apotheosis says:

I’ve told this story once before.

When Hemsky re-signed under Tambo I was on a trip with my wife and a friend down to South Carolina, road trip. Limited access to wifi.

I was fretting losing him for weeks and was in a minor panic. When I got the news it was late at night after we stopped driving. We stopped in West Virginia on the way back to Toronto. I checked the news finally and let out a very loud “Whoo Hoo! Hemmer!” in the hotel room. I’m sure the other patrons didn’t appreciate it, or know what it signified.

I’ll be giggling like an idiot for months if they re-sign Hemsky.

  18. Spydyr says:

I’m sure many former players are lining up to come back to the gong show.

    Free, free at last.

  19. Gordies Elbow says:

    VanOil,

Watch, Dale Tallon’s going to flip the 8th and Phaneuf to Edmonton for the 3rd.

Tallon comes out of the deal trading the first, and getting one of Bennett/Reinhart/Draisatl, and Kadri. Edmonton picks up Phaneuf’s big contract, and drafts a player like Ritchie or Virtanen.

  20. Andy P says:

Guess why so many good players either want out or don’t want to come here.

Good players wanting to come back to Edmonton would be one indication that the Oil had addressed that factor. Another indication would be players no longer quitting on the coach, and another would be making the playoffs.

  21. RexLibris says:

I want Hemsky to win a Stanley Cup.

I want the Oilers to win a Stanley Cup (or six).

I cannot fathom a scenario that combines those two wishes into a single event.

    Sorry, LT.

On another note, TSN reports that Jim Rutherford and Pierre Maguire are both getting interest as the next Penguins’ GM.

That might not be as bad a move as hiring Tortorella to replace Vigneault, but it might not be too far off.

Also, choosing between the Rangers and Kings, my preference is for the Rangers.

Here’s why: Vigneault winning the Cup one season removed from being fired by the Canucks…priceless karmic payback for an organization whose behaviour of late I despise. Also, Sather’s grinning mug is enough to turn the stomach of most Flames fans, the more of him the better then.

Plus I want to see what the Cup looks like wearing Lundqvist’s fedora.

  22. Henry says:

I read the title to this post and immediately went for some Tomintoul. Finished reading and had that 12 string piece in A from Radiohead going through my head.

    Nice dream….nice dream….nice dream…nice dream.

Think I’ll have some more Scotch and contemplate this some more.

  23. Henry says:

“Would you? Hell men, I’d sign Ales and Dustin and put the band back together, giggling like an idiot until long past midnight. Bringing Hemsky back in opens up trade options, and good lord Henry we saw what he could do with a real center while in Ottawa.”

If I was to blue sky this scenario I might come up with this:

    to FLA- Yak, Gagner
to EDM- Barkov, rights to Gilbert

  24. Jasmine says:

Good players wanting to come back to Edmonton would be one indication that the Oil had addressed that factor. Another indication would be players no longer quitting on the coach, and another would be making the playoffs.

Players won’t sign in Edmonton because Oilers fans have a habit of running players, coaches and GMs out of town.

  25. Henry says:

Hemmer should have been on Crosby’s right side for these playoffs.

They probably don’t have the cap space for that for next year. Who knows what Rutherford will come up with though.

New Jersey is a cozy spot for him sure, but he and a great center can open up space for each other.

  26. Woodguy says:

    RexLibris,

That might not be as bad a move as hiring Tortorella to replace Vigneault, but it might not be too far off.

Apparently Shero had it in contract where he reported directly to Lemiuex, bypassing Pres. Morehouse and co-owner Burkle.

They disagreed with enough of his decisions to turf him.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Burkle and/or Morehouse wants more control and are interviewing for the best lacky to carry out their orders.

    I could be wrong.

  27. Racki says:

Not sure if this is old news, but ISS list apparently is final now? Again.. not sure if that is old news, but TSN just tweeted it:

Totally agree but it shows us / me that the guys in the East have there heads up there collective arses where Hemsky both was and is . Give him any decent center and he will get points . My guess also is Jersey & for less than the $5 mill

  29. Zangetsu says:

    Hall RNH Eberle
    Yak Spezza Hemsky
    Penner Bennett Perron
    Lander Gordon Hendricks
    Arcobello

Don’t know how you get spezza, but that’s the stuff wet dreams are made of. A kid with two capable
    mentors on every line.

  30. Zangetsu says:

    Jasmine,

    Your always so negative.

  31. Hammers says:

Sorry all but as much as I would also like Hemsky & Penner back McT isn’t even close to doing that . He maybe close to trading the 3rd pick . Somehow I feel the 3rd & Gags actually could get Phanuef / Kadri Or The Schenn Brothers or if lucky Coburn + B. Schenn . May have to throw in an AHL player or 3rd from Bryz deal . Who really knows what McT / Lowe / Katz / talk about but my guess is still that the new building may start to draw some UFA players to the great white north .

  32. Suntory Hanzo says:

    Jasmine,

Well, a good note is when you live in another market ( I live in lower mainland BC) you find that even the ‘good teams’ ( and yes, people considered the Canucks to be a good team for a long time) run people out of town all the time.

Willy Mitchell was a great example after he was off for concussion symptoms he was caught coming out of a movie theatre and the fans went crazy.

Most of the defence has been fan traded ad nauseum and Luongo had a crazy love/ hate with the fans.

So it isn’t just us. All good teams run out players when times are tough. It’s just that our times have been tough for too long.

  33. nycoil says:

Back to my scenario of trading the 2015 1st conditionally for Spezza, only with Hemmer coming back as well? Spezza re-signs for $6m, taking a nobody makes more than Hall pay cut (one can dream) and that pick is a top-5 protected 1st. If Spezza won’t re-sign it becomes a 2nd; if he does but Oilers draft in the top 5, it becomes a 2016 1st and 2015 2nd.

Think it would be great if the kids bar Hall could be moved down the depth chart next season and given soft minutes.
    Spezza-Hall-Hemsky
    Nuge-Perron-Eberle
Gordon-Gagner(yes, he is still here)-Yakupov (he is definitely still here)
    Lander-Winnik or Pouliot-Hendricks

    Niskanen-Petry
    Stralman-Marincin
    Schultz-Ference

The #3 overall (Ekblad or Draisaitl) stays in junior

  34. nycoil says:

As I suspected, Chicago going to try to hammer out extensions for 19 and 88 this summer, so they are going to look at moving some money off the books in the not-too-distant future. They have $4.6M of cap room assuming a $71.1M max, with 2 forwards, 1 D, and backup G to sign. It will be tight. Could see another Chicago-Florida trade though.

    http://espn.go.com/chicago/nhl/story/_/id/11027917/chicago-blackhawks-gm-says-patrick-kane-jonathan-toews-extensions-top-offseason-priority

  35. Racki says:

These kinds of things are good to read about. Whether you like the player or not, Ference is such a good community guy:

  36. dangilitis says:

Woodguy: Ales Hemsky is a bad, bad man

    Shut your mouth!

But I’m talkin’ ’bout Hemmer (Then we can dig it)

  37. misfit says:

I want Hemsky back as badly as LT (maybe more), but there is no way Edmonton is anywhere in his mind as a landing spot this offseason. He wants the playoffs, and a team that could contend. This is a team 8 years removed from it’s last playoff appearance and 6 from its last top 20 finish. We don’t check off any of the boxes.

  38. hunter1909 says:

Jasmine: Players won’t sign in Edmonton because Oilers fans have a habit of running players, coaches and GMs out of town.

Thankfully Kevin Lowe, Bucky, Steve Smith and MacT are all immune to these evil, disgusting “fans”.

  39. Ca$h-Money! says:

MacT won’t pursue Hemmer because it would be a massively risky move from a job retention perspective. If he signs Hemsky and he produces at a .6ppg clip or misses 20 or more games due to injury, the majority of the fan base will be clamouring for his head, as will most of the mainstream media.

  40. gcw_rocks says:

It’s time to move on. Let Hemsky enjoy the rest of his career rather than deal with any more of this gong show.

Plus, if he really is looking for $5.5M he needs to go somewhere he can get first line minutes. That ain’t happening here unless Eberle gets traded.

  41. Woodguy says:

    dangilitis: Shut your mouth!

But I’m talkin’ ’bout Hemmer (Then we can dig it)

He’s a complicated man and no one can under him but his center.

    Ales Hemsky!

  42. HiddenDarts says:

    Zangetsu: Hall RNH Eberle
    Yak Spezza Hemsky
    Penner Bennett Perron
    Lander Gordon Hendricks
    Arcobello

Hate to applaud the fantasy, but wow does that look like an NHL quality lineup.

  43. russ99 says:

I don’t see Ales coming back until we’re a playoff team and/or when Eakins is gone.

Come to think of it, those conditions are probably mutually exclusive.

  44. raventalon40 says:

I remember that Hemsky said one reason he wanted to stay in Ottawa was Spezza. With news that Spezza wants out, this doesn’t surprise me at all.

  45. PerryK says:

I hate to repeat myself, but because I think that it is important, I said in Cruel Summer post:

    PERRYK says:

Samwise has to go! Do what you need to. Partial salary back? Whatever!
Forget this talk about more small centers. Just sign Spezza and Hemsky. Let them play together with Perron and move Nuge Hall Ebs to 2. Yak can play on the 3rd line with Arco and (Penner? or whoever). Get Moss to play with Gordon. There is a team that would start to challenge for the playoffs. Let the kids grow into their roles on D slowly.
Not going to challenge for the cup anytime soon, but would be fun to watch the Oilers again!
