ES NUMBERS AND THE 2014 DRAFT

Since we have a little window here (about one week) before the draft it might be an idea to post the major Extra Skater numbers on a line and discuss them. For me, the numbers that are going to hold the biggest importance are TOI (at-bats) and production (5×5 and overall points-per-60). I’m uncertain of the Qual Comp and Qual Team Numbers, but quite like the Point Share Number for reference.

So, if we were going to post a ‘top 10′ and have it in a workable player card fashion, would this be about right?

2014 DRAFT ELIGIBILES VIA EXTRA SKATER

PPG NAME (LEAGUE) GP G A TOI Ev/60 All/60 PS%
1.60 SAM BENNETT, OHL 57 36 55 22.9 3.5 4.1 73.7%
1.50 ROBBY FABBRI, OHL 58 45 42 21.6 3.4 4.2 71.8%
1.65 NIKOLAJ EHLERS, QMJHL 63 49 55 26.0 3.2 3.8 70.9%
1.64 LEON DRAISAITL, WHL 64 38 67 24.3 2.9 4.0 91.8%
1.75 SAM REINHART, WHL 60 36 69 27.9 2.8 3.7 90%
1.20 NIKITA SCHERBAK, WHL 65 28 50 20.4 2.8 3.5 84.2%
1.00 JAKE VIRTANEN, WHL 71 45 26 17.8 2.7 3.3 76.2%
1.21 NICK RITCHIE, OHL 61 39 35 22.3 2.5 3.2 76.7%
1.42 MICHAEL DAL COLLE, OHL 67 39 56 25.3 2.3 3.3 85.7%
1.28 BRENDAN PERLINI, OHL 58 34 37 21.5 2.1 3.4 69.6%

I’ve sorted by EV/60, I think that’s the purest way to do it, but welcome your input. Hmmm. Sam Bennett! Draisaitl and Reinhart too, we need to be mindful we’re across leagues, and Ehlers is a psycho killer. Fabbri! I think people are underrating him in a big way.

At the other end of the spectrum, we have Virtanen, but his TOI indicates he’s not getting a big push. Dal Colle’s icetime is a monster, and frankly Ritchie and Perlini don’t come off well either.

Top 30 goes tomorrow, Bennett is No. 1 overall. Anyone think that’s a bad idea? Speak now, or forever hold your peace.

I really want to see the MacT move this pick and pull off a shocker. I’d take any of the top4 guys, but as a suffering Oiler fan.. Turn this pick into O’reilly

  2. Rondo says:

Given his age, time on ice, also time on ice on the pp Bennett looks like the #1 statistically. But will size be the determining factor. I flip flop day to day between the top 3 centres.

I believe Reinhart has the greatest potential for a team to be built around. Buffalo seem determined to draft him if Florida doesn’t.

I believe Ehlers might have the most points at the end of his career and will be taken by a team he can thrive on, like Detroit or Anaheim. Bastards.

I believe At Bats are important and that with 16 more years living in Canada you get more At Bats in the form of hockey rink availability, coaching and quality of competition than someone 8 months older living in Germany before coming to the CHL.

I could see Ekblad dropping to 4th or have some team trade up too draft him 1st. I have no idea which way it will go.

  5. Numenius says:

Interesting that Bennett also comes out ahead of Draisaitl and Reinhart in TotalP/60 (i.e. including PP).

    TotalP/60
    Bennett 4.18
    Draisaitl 4.05
    Reinhart 3.76

Draisaitl’s and Reinhart’s PS% (and size and upside in the case of Draisaitl) still puts them slightly ahead of Bennett in my opinion, though.

Would shooting % also be a useful stat to compare here?

    Dear Mister Allan Lowetide,

You sir have upset me to no end. I, myself spent an entire weekend constructing a fabulous monument to the disparate, sometimes unified and always individual voices of this here comment section. A weekend can be seen as a great measure of free time to someone who is employed in society. I am not but no matter.

This monument took the form of a collage embellishing many of the fancy free personalities found here and used their own words to construct a narrative aimed at emoting a whimpering chuckle.

Not within even a full hour of its posting (an act which caused me a great sense of cathartic release after so many hours spent in deep concentration) did you enact upon the internets a new thread which had the effect of making the previously current one obsolete and practically unreadable. This new thread was the third of the very same day, unheard of!

You sir have hurt me for the last time, goddammit.
Good day to you sir, good day forever.

Not sure about that. EVP/60 divided by ps% would approximate team points while the player is on the ice. Multiplying the two just cuts down his own contribution by the proportion that he’s already contributing overall…?

It might be a useful coefficient for comparing production, but I’m not sure the math is quite right for “total contribution.”

So my good attempts to move the conversation forward ,as you might say, were not met with the overwhelming humility and virginal submissiveness I thought they would, but instead the banal chatter continued uninterrupted as if I had made no proclamations of intellectual sunsetty scenes.

I quickly realized my mistake and decided that from thence on I would only contribute if both the thought and action of doing so aroused no small amount of measured mirth from my belly. I see now that I have miscalculated twice in my attempts at masculine bonding with strangers on the internet and guarantee you that a third mistake will not be gambled upon.

That is the player not the teammates.

  23. Bank Shot says:

Sam Bennett’s team was not very good last year. The lineup didn’t change that much year over year. The goaltending improved marginally. No one on the team hit 55 points last season.

This season Bennett jumped by 50 points, and a good number of his teammates saw solid bumps in production though nowhere near Bennett’s surge.

Bennett’s +/- is one of the very best on the team and by scouting accounts is a great two way player. Maybe the reason that Bennett’s team is so much better than Draisaitl’s is in large part due to Bennett himself.

Bennett could be the guy that drives the play and shifts the zone starts for his teammates by dominating possession. Draisaitl could be the guy that scores a lot of points but gives a lot of offence back the other way.

That would certainly explain why basically every scouting service has Bennett over Draisaitl.

It’s pretty tough to even guess when all we have are boxcar numbers and no one has really seen them play much at all.

What kind of fucknut math are you doing? Those totals are already what they contribute. If you want the total even points of their teams your can divide by their contribution and multiply by 100. If the Oilers trade down or go off the board, I hope it is for the Electric Ehl.

My suggestion would be to hit the paypal button a few times, back your comments up with cold hard cash (borrow from Mom if you have too) and who knows? We have the first line (Hall, Nugent-Hopkins and Eberle). If we can draft a guy at centre who can play, then we’d have that guy, Perron and Sam or some form of that.

From that, it kind of sounds like they’re interested in having Gagner play 2nd line wing. Not that I want to read much into it, but I would have thought Yakupov would have come to mind first as 2nd line RW

Agreed. That was the most disheartening interview I’ve heard from MacT in a long time.

    1. Trading Yak.
    2. Keeping Gagner.
    3. Keeping the 3rd OV in the NHL, on the second line.
    4. Signing another Fraser.

Even one of these things happening (except maybe keeping Gagner) is really bad. All four happening would set back the team another couple years IMO.

  40. Racki says:

Well, I think we can all agree that there are two major holes on the team.. that top pairing D man and the centreman. One will get solved at the draft, and it will very likely be the centreman.

I would fairly confidently say that this team will never really go anywhere with the swiss cheese defense it has (unless Ramsey works miracles). However, plugging both of these holes could result in a much better team when you add in the goaltending that was fixed mid-season last year, and the Ramsey-factor (one hopes), as well as the one thing we hope for each year, and improvement across the board from the youth.

How do the Oilers fill that last hole if they aren’t willing to deal from a position of strength, and deal a good player? Honest question.. are there some UFA singings that the Oilers really have a good chance at getting? Faulk and Hainsey? Honest question here.

I guess MacTavish should see how free agency goes. If he came away with a couple of guys that aren’t so glamorous, but are good defensemen who can eat up minutes, that still works fine. And if not, then maybe you think about trading a good piece for one. I’m not really confident that they have the ability to lure the kind of player they need to here. And well, you guys can probably rest assured that they don’t have the appeal to sign the big names that they probably want to sign.

And I’m hoping the ‘sign another Fraser” talk wasn’t really suggesting another Fraser. If they wanted Mark Fraser, they could just bring him back. Now that said, they apparently have been trying to re-sign him…. damn it.

  41. PLUGGER says:

    Good Evening Lowetide et al.
Just as every picture tells a story, every number will as well. However, it only tells part of the story that scouts views complete.
It is almost frightening how the numbers tell a different story that what the myriad of scouting bureaus believe. I guess that as helpful as the numbers are there must be saw him good that scouts must still believe in.
Off topic, but, now that Nikitin hopefully has gone the way of WTE, Johnny Boychuk? What does Boston want in exchange? Perhaps Marancin and/or Gernat so thay have double replacements for their current Slovak legend. I think if Chiarelli went to Chara and asked his thoughts that he would approve and mentor them for team and country. I only think both as Gernat seemed to drop off after Marancin came up!
Thanks for a long day LT. You still amaze me.

  42. Hammers says:

My take is Ekblad #1 , Draisail #2 , Reinhart #3 but we won’t pick #3 ., Ehlers #4 , Bennet #5 , Ritchie #6 then anything can happen . My take is if #1 & #2 are gone McT trades #3 probably to Toronto Or Philly . . As long as the return is a top “D” or 2nd line “C” I am OK with it and depending on who it is we may only get a 2nd round pick with that player .

Lowetide: And THAT’S why I’ve been talking about Yakupov being dealt as a re-set.

With respect LT, I think you’re over-reading into hints of Yak’s departure to protect yourself from possible heartbreak. Those signs are not in these tea leaves. MacT also mentions finding a good scoring centreman to play with Yak on an offensive 3rd line. Mentions it might be Arco or Lander if they step up, or a UFA signing if the find a good one.

2.9 EVP/60 is what Draisaital gets while he is is on the ice. He contributes 91.8% to that.

    He drives the totals.

    Fucknut math!

Podunk fat ass dip shit fucking lazy ass moron that knows fuck all about being on a team and knowing who the play goes thru. I have worked in camps.and can swear also.

Bennett has 73.7% of the play driven thru him. your telling me his points are all him. BS.

73.7% of his EVP/60 can be directly Atributed to him.
His EVP/60 is reflective of the line and teamates

To say otherwise makes you that Fat blogger in the basement all the former player use to justify the lack of validity of the analytic world.

Not accepting a more dominate player on a team is exhibit number 1 for the Anti analytics image of the masterbating basement Blogger.

OilFire: With respect LT, I think you’re over-reading into hints of Yak’s departure to protect yourself from possible heartbreak. Those signs are not in these tea leaves.MacT also mentions finding a good scoring centreman to play with Yak on an offensive 3rd line.Mentions it might be Arco or Lander if they step up, or a UFA signing if the find a good one.

What are you talking about, everyone knows that Yak is gone. He is part of the soon to come 3 for 1 trade that’s just around the corner.

Agreed on all except #2. Gagner will bounce back – at least offensively. That will generate higher trade value.

Almost time for Katz to write another letter reminding fans that it’s his team and he’s going to take his time building it properly.

You can see how these things happen though.

I.e. there’s every chance the new center shows up at training camp and IS the 2nd best center in camp. Darnell could absolutely be one of 6 best defencemen in camp. You can see the brass thinking – well we don’t have any nasty back on defence (no disrespect to hit leader Petry or Ference’s willingness to engage), well shucks we better sign Fraser to “look after the kids”.

While co-sourcing a piece of equipment for a test facility being constructed by a local University where I was the equipment SME and a Professor of Mech. Eng that lectured at a local University was the technical SME, we had a good discussion on a transatlantic plane trip about one aspect of the equipment design. The conclusion the Professor made towards the end of the flight, was that I was correct in my conclusion but for the wrong reason.

I suspect you may be on the same path as I was at that time, interesting results with logic that SME’s will find to be flawed.

Suspect is the best I can suggest, because I lack the time and space to go into the detail necessary to prove you wrong :)

    Lowetide,

LT I am really confused now. My staff really tells me that happens frequently and think I might have to believe them now. I kinda had Bennett written off. He seems to be the same kind of player mold we have in Chase..who I expect him to make the team sometime in 2015/2016. Do you think having a player like chase in the system will affect the way they choose the third pick..I do..

Wrong Falk/Faulk. Faulk is terrific and unavailable. Falk isn’t very good as of now (7th/8th D on NYR) and is.

    Re: Bennett:

If he didn’t have the two way game, would everyone consider him a smaller skilled player and thus drop him into a lower range?

Just wondering, since at some time one or the other will take precedent when playing vs. bigger and older players, unless he’s one of those lottery ticket players who keeps their skill and 2-way play as they get older – something we shouldn’t be banking on.

New schedule is out. Dare I say it looks pretty farvourable to the Oilers compared to other years. The Feb and March 6 and 5 game road trips likely make or break their season. I can’t see them being eliminated from contention by Halloween like last year, but never know… because Oilers.

In my hockey dreamscape the Oilers make a trade with the Sabres or Panthers getting a lottery pick in a deal that fills holes, make the playoffs and draft McDavid with the pick. I put it at 50/50.

Let’s be realistic here. The Oilers are going to finish in lottery contention again without having to do much at all.

Unless we get the Gagner and defense figured out in a hurry.

Repeat post in case the discussion is going here and isn’t still on the other thread… Where are they getting time on ice numbers here? I know it says estimated but how and by whom? That can mess with things incredibly. I just was taking a look at the Bronco numbers and not all of them are where I’d think they would be.
