OILERS AT 130: LIAM COUGHLIN

  • Kirk Luedeke, 2013: Simply put, we love this kid, who is unranked by Central. In fact, we think his name should come up a whole lot more in draft discussions given his 6-foot-3 frame and scoring touch. As it stands, we wouldn’t be shocked to see an NHL team with an entrenched New England presence grab him in the final rounds. Coughlin is a winner; the USHL’s Clark Cup champion Dubuque Fighting Saints agree, taking him 30th overall in that league’s draft.
  • 6.02, 175 according to Central Scouting.
  • Stu MacGregor: “He’s going to Boston University (he’ll be a teammate of MacTavish’s son Sean in 2015).”
  • Kirk Luedeke: “Big kid, can skate. Had him as my “super sleeper” a year ago, but didn’t see him at Vernon. Raw as hell but passionate, industrious”

Why would you take Coughlin, a guy from the BCHL who turns 20 in September.

A lot of lip service that the Oilers will be drafting differently under MacT, but honestly, what purpose did this pick serve?

Sickening, when Mayo and Kulda and Irving all available.

    Fuck.

Let’s hope Kulda lasts to the 6th

Love the kid’s spirit. Reminds me of Tikk

    Fuck.

    Repeated from other thread:

He can spend 4 years at college before he needs a pro contract.

Kulda has to go pro in a year I think.

Draft and follow. It’s a good strategy for this stage of the draft, when maybe 1 in 12 players will have a career.

It’s walkabout picks like this that just kill me.

Coughlin may turn out to be a good pick, who knows.

But to not get a value pick when Mayo and Watson are still on the board and to instead select an overeager that isn’t even a PPG guy in the BCHL is pretty damning.

    PunjabiOil,
Punjabioil is a smart guy, but this is the kind of overreaction that occasionally irritates less involved followers of this site — like me.

Its a 5th rounder, and, as such, literally by definition, its something of a flyer. This kid is going to college hockey, and its going to be three years or more before we see if he beats the odds to become another Arcobello, fer crissakes.

We like Kulda and Mayo because they’re on our local radar, but they, really, are no more or less likely to make it than this kid is. Its a a crap shoot.

  6. Bag of Pucks says:

That’s a great point Marc. Fair to say middling pro prospects should learn towards the NCAA then?

  7. Lowetide says:

I actually like this pick quite a bit. I know there are Oil Kings available, but this young man has skill and plays center. Remember folks we’re miles from where the real players are, except one. And THAT is the shame here.

  8. PunjabiOil says:

he’s not putting up numbers in the BCHL. He’s an overager who turns 20. Value left on the board IMO.

Watson is still available and they take Evan Campbell 2.0.

    Great, another 20 year old.

    How many overagers turn out?

  12. KSC10032 says:

    Barcs,

The other 29 teams haven’t taken these guys ether.

So the Oilers are not inherently more clueless than every other team in this particular case.

this kind of argument from stupid doesn’t help. NHL GMs aren’t trust worthy.

  14. Bag of Pucks says:

Quick shout out to Leduc native Brandon Hickey who went to the Flames.

Living in the grove, I watch the Saints play quite a bit. Excellent program and a team that plays a wildly entertaining brand of hockey.

I definitely have a vested interest in former saints like Scrivens and Hickey.

Of course this all started growing up around St Albert and a young saint by the name of Messier ; )

Best part of this day. Watching these kids living the dream.

Glad you put the “IMO” qualifier in there being that you aren’t an NHL scout and all. Oil Kings left on the board and you having attended a couple of their games doesn’t qualify you as one either.

    “IMO”.

  16. KSC10032 says:

Hells bells, I’d of taken the Oil King kids, too, for the sake of fan interest.

All I’m saying is that one long-shot is more or less equivalent to another. I do not profess to have any particular insight, here. I just don’t believe there is all that much difference amongst young men who are, at best, 1/20 to even get a cup of coffee here.

Smart people are getting cut and bleeding here over far too little.

I tend to agree with your statement here. This is the time when making a pick that is high risk high reward makes sense. Either way the odds are against snagging an NHL player here. Plus I heard this Kirk Luedeke and Stu Mac guys know a few things about prospects. Maybe even a little bit more then some “arm chair” amateur scouts might?

  18. PunjabiOil says:

Not saying I’m a scout, or remotely close to one – but we can go back and let the math speak for itself.

The NHL market is very inefficient. No reason a Greg Chase should have lasted until the 7th round last year. Picking him was defensible, even if you’ve never seen him play, and deserved recognition. Selecting the Michigan goalie with a .929 SV % can be rigorously defended.

The Oilers deserve to be panned for the selections today after the 4th round. Math tells us they left value on the board. We saw it with Hesketh and Abney, and we’re seeing it today.

    Little has changed.

  19. supernova says:

Don’t mind the pick but would have liked to see the gamble in round 7 not 5.

Maybe the whispers of scouting where saying he was getting drafted soon.

Don’t mind drafting 94 Borns in 96 draft year especially going to college.

Decent pick but at a higher value.

Truthfully feel a round 5 is equivelant to a round 7 aside from who was left on the table.

  20. sliderule says:

Stu loves those Vernon picks .

If he lived in Ft Mac would we picking oil Barons.

This pick is classic why the Oil don’t have success in the later rounds
