OILERS SIGN POULIOT

Oilers sign Benoit Pouliot. Inconsistent player, big man and he can score. Pouliot is a good possession player and offers size and skill.

THE VOLLMAN SLEDGEHAMMER

pouliot vollman

This is a good player, the contract ($20M over 5 years) is going to get the attention but the Oilers do in fact appear to be building four lines up front.

OILERS FORWARD DEPTH CHART PROJECTION FOR 2014-15

LEFT WING CENTER RIGHT WING
TAYLOR HALL RYAN NUGENT-HOPKINS JORDAN EBERLE
DAVID PERRON ???? TEDDY PURCELL
BENOIT POULIOT LEON DRAISAITL NAIL YAKUPOV
MATT HENDRICKS BOYD GORDON ????
LUKE GAZDIC MARK ARCOBELLO
  ANTON LANDER TYLER PITLICK

I haven’t mentioned this word much this spring and early summer. Balance. It is NOT here yet. But there’s some iron in these signings this morning. He should be a brilliant player for a soft minutes line.

This scares me.. I would of offered him 1 yr at about 3mil.. I’m not a GM though, unless were talking about my breakfast

  2. limit says:

Wow horrible overpay at $4mln per 5yrs for a 3rd line 15 goal, 30 pt guy, will be buyout target after a couple years.

  3. Wolfie says:

Big and skilled and people are unsure! I’m baffled!

  4. Lewis Grant says:

This is like the day they signed Petry at a huge underpay and Dubnyk at a huge overpay. We initially wondered if they had incorrectly reversed the numbers for the two.

You’re pumped about the first deal until you hear about the second one.

Great to have Fayne, especially for those numbers.

$20M for Pouliot? WTF? Please, somebody rush in the fancy stats to assure me we’re not back to the Tambo days.

  5. PunjabiOil says:

    Good signing.

We need to adjust our expectations from the cap world.

4M today is not 4M 3-4 years ago.

An average NHL player should be making north of 3M these days.

  6. OilClog says:

If he’s yak and the germ ones running mate.. He better make space, I would of thrown this offer at Iginla since crazy has taken over

Iginla won’t go anywhere that doesn’t have a very good shot at the cup.

I think I’m guilty of this.

Next year the cap is minimum $73MM because they added $4MM this year from Rogers and left the other $4MM from the Rogers deal for next year.

Prices will be higher next year.

I like the player a lot.

Here’s his RelCor for his career:

    2007-2008 Season -12.1
    2008-2009 Season -7.8
    2009-2010 Season 7.3
    2010-2011 Season 10.5
    2011-2012 Season 3.9
    2012-2013 Season 8.6
    2013-2014 Season 7.3

He’s done that moving around from team to team as well.

    Pretty good.

He had excellent Corsi last year, but was also pretty sheltered with Zone starts, and if you know anything about Vignault you know how extreme that probably was.

He’s not a bad player though. He held up his end of that bargain for sure.

  13. PunjabiOil says:

Would you rather have Michalek or Pouliot?

Why is Michalek worth 4M and not Pouliot? Why isn’t the media outraged for that signing by Ottawa?

  14. Younger Oil says:

I like the signing, the only thing I’m concerned a bit about now is out PK. Hall, Eberle, Perron, Purcell, Pouliot, and Yakupov all don’t have very much time on the PK. Need a 2C and a 4RW that can join Gordon and Hendricks.

  15. Wolfie says:

There’s talk of Pouliot playing centre but TSN has him listed on the left side. Anyone know where he was used in NY?

  16. PaperDesigner says:

You and Dennis King are going to have to start a support group, Lowetide. The Pouliot-in-Edmonton-Recovery-Program. PIERP. Which conveniently sounds like a sobbing noise.

He’s a good real nhl player. Fucking right.

  20. Gordies Elbow says:

    Woodguy,

    Excellent post.

One thing to note, about the cap:

    $39,000,000
    $44,000,000 – 12.82%
    $50,300,000 – 14.32%
    $56,800,000 – 12.92%
    $59,400,000 – 4.58%
    $64,300,000 – 8.25%
    $60,000,000 – -6.69% (Reset at bargaining agreement)
    $64,300,000 – 7.17%
    $69,000,000 – 7.31%

First column is the salary cap by year, second is the percentage of growth since the last year. If we assume that it’ll grow by an even 5% (less than the average of 7.5% it has,) you’re looking at the next four years as:

    $72,450,000
    $76,072,500
    $79,876,125
    $83,869,931

Wow. On a side note, does this make Hall’s contract look good, or what?

  25. Darrell says:

    Woodguy,

Just sick of boo birds … I’m done bitching

  26. Lewis Grant says:

Michalek isn’t worth $4M either. But Michalek didn’t get 5 years.

I’m glad to hear that Pouliot’s CorsiRel is so strong. But even if that’s the best stat, it’s not the only one. In 2007, the most advanced stat was Desjardins’ On/Off EV/60. Vanek led the league. Lowe offered him $50M. Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

    I just can’t see how a third-line winger is worth $4M, signed through 32.

And if we’re going to overpay, how about overpaying Petry? If we lose Petry because of Pouliot, I will not be happy.

  27. Woodguy says:

Says he’s excited to be in a Canadian market.

Ference called him and helped the process.

They’ve asked him to play the same role as in NYR, 3rd line LW.

Happy he can put down roots in Edmonton and not moving around.

    Boyle looked done last year.

Arco is probably slightly over his head but that is a low bar to clear. If the 2nd line can shelter them the 3d line could be exciting. Who does Fayne partner with?

  50. KSC10032 says:

Pouliot is Penner minus the waistline concerns.

Many of the same positives, negatives and questions @ his game as “Pancakes” has(had).

I’m OK with this signing, particularly if the penny has indeed dropped with Pouliot, who, IIRC, was a 4th overall pick in his draft year.

    Also, not a smurf.

  52. Logan91 says:

    skidplate:
    Bolland is quite the overpay.

    5.5 is a big overpay

  53. Kris11 says:

I’d say that Pouliot is not an overpay and the longer deal is an asset not a flaw, as long as he has no. NMC.

This is just a heuristic, but some food for thought:

Cap is 69MM for a 23 man rosterl, yes?

That means an average of 3MM per player.

UFA players will earn more and rookies and RFA’s less, given the structure of the current bargaining agreement, (Eberle and Hall can’t complain about that. If they were UFa’s, they’d have earned more.)

So an average-ish UFA player earns more than 3MM.

Also, cap will go up and Pouliot’s 4MM will take up less of a percentage of the cap.

  54. VanOil says:

    KEEP PETRY.

  57. Numenius says:

Only about $3.5-4M left for a 2C after the Petry/Schultz signings. The Oil no longer flush with cash.

  58. flyfish1168 says:

    Waiting for Hemsky to sign.

  59. Ducey says:

So if the dust settles now,

the Oilers have Arco as 2nd line C and Lander as 4L winger?

I like the Pouliot deal. Size, grit, good fancy stats, relatively young. Overpaying is part of the process and EDM’s situation.

All of sudden the Oilers have a lot of bona fide NHL players.

I’ve always thought that the battle within the Oilers between the old guard and the analytics group was going to be one played out by degrees.

Each signing backed by one or the other was going to push the needle in either direction based on subsequent performance.

Perron was backed by the numbers guys, Fraser by the seen-him-scouts.

Perron was a success, Fraser less so.

Each time the stats guys find a good player it reinforces to Oilers management that they have a place in the NHL. Has to be coupled with in-person viewings and due diligence, but it has a place.

Colorado will be a year older and better, but lose Stastny
St. Louis gets Stastny, who seems to be the EXACT player they’ve been missing this whole time
Dallas bringing in Spezza and Hemsky basically for free is enormous
Nashville brings in Neal, probably another C, and have Jones/Forsber/Jarnkrok developing

If Klef and Joensuu go down to the farm, they’ll have to pay other players for those spots. You want 23 players on the roster.

Oil sign Keith Aulie. 7th dman, Klefbom starts in minors

  101. Southern Oil says:

    Keith Aulie to the Oil.

  102. VanOil says:

The balance of power in the NHL continues to be in the West. The Pacific has the murderers row that is California. Now the Central has Chicago, St. Louis and an emergent Dallas all looking like killers. Betting against Colorado seems to be smart money this year.

  103. Lewis Grant says:

    flyfish1168:
Wonder if Cody Eakin might be available. Would look good in Oiler colors.

    Yup. So would Sobotka.

Unfortunately, I think Nill and Armstrong are too smart to let these guys go. They know the value of C depth.

For that matter, so does Lombardi. (Hey, didn’t LA just win the Cup?)

  104. reckless_abandon says:

Keith Aulie is now our 7th defenseman.

  105. Woodguy says:

DAL look like real piss cutters

    Benn-Seguin-Nikushkin
    Cole-Spezza-Hemsky

    That’s some tough sledding.

If Nill doesn’t win GM of the year, they should stop giving out the trophy.

  106. russ99 says:

Oilers sign Aulie. Good 7th defenseman.

    Bleh.

Stauffer mentioned his name about an hour ago.

  108. "Steve Smith" says:

I feel like Draisaitl and Arcobello are going to bounce back and forth as our second and third line centres. I don’t hate it, I guess. I mean, I do hate it, but not as much as I’ve hated at least fifty other things the Oilers have done in the last eight years.

  109. reckless_abandon says:

    Woodguy,

I’m pleased that it is Aulie instead of Mark Fraser. This keeps Klefbomb down in OKC for the first 30 games of the year. I’d honestly rather just see Klefbomb in Edmonton all year.

  110. russ99 says:

    “Steve Smith”,

I do. We need a vet at least in one spot.

Bergland supposedly available for a first rounder…. Tempting.

  112. kooler says:

Be patient. Draisaitl can’t check his hat. Just wait till you see him facing the vaunt on the road. Give that hate time to grow.

  114. RexLibris says:

Aulie was the throw-in along with Phaneuf to Toronto.

Then sent to Tampa Bay a short while later.

He’s big, but hasn’t ever been able to establish himself.

Better than Fraser, I think, as at least there is a chance that Ramsay can make something of the young man yet.

Nah, they’ll just adjust reality to fit their opinions.

Hall will score three goals, Nugent-Hopkins will have four assists but Spector will talk about it all stemming from a big hit from Pouliot in the offensive zone.

  122. skidplate says:

5.5 for 5 years for Orpik, that is a big big overpay.

What would you have to resign Perron for after singing pouliot? Assuming that happens of course, heard more about trading than resigning him.

  131. finn_fann says:

The overall direction this team seems headed is getting me excited.

Nikitin was certainly an overpay, but a calculated one where cap space was used to solve an immediate problem and make time for the D to mature. The value of these latest contracts seem excellent, especially given the term and upcoming cap inflation. Moreover, they have all been consistently for big bodies with some skill, able to play a possession game, and playing in their prime 27/28 year old seasons.

Bottom line, these are all real NHL players with proven value on reasonable contracts. I’m getting goosebumps.

5 years for Pouliot isn’t excellent, it’s tolerable.

I think not. Schultz and Petry will take up the remaining cap space.

  139. Gino says:

    striatic,

Not automatically, many factors involved here, it’s still early in the process Petry could still be traded and Schultz could been signed to a bridge contract.

  140. PaperDesigner says:

striatic: I think not. Schultz and Petry will take up the remaining cap space.

    All twelve million of it?

I think there’s room for one more decently sized contract.

  141. kooler says:

I thought there was 13 million without signing Schultz, Petry….should be a couple bucks for a C? Let see what MacT has left in the magic trunk.

Also, given that Yakupov’s still on his entry contract, can’t the Oilers go slightly over the cap this season, and then simply risk cap penalties next season if Yakupov hits too many bonuses?

Any way I look at it, they still have room for at least one more major contract.

EDIT: Never mind, cap geek uses only Yakupov’s base salary.

  145. nycoil says:

Hi, just checking in from Santa Fe again.

Some of you will know i’ve advocated for the Oilers to sign Pouliot for a while now as an “under-the-radar” candidate.

I’ve seen him plenty on the Rangers. Here’s what you can expect:

    The good:
    Smooth skater
    Solid in his own zone
More than a modicum of skill
    Some size
Good possession player on a great line with Zuccarello

    The bad:
Takes boneheaded, lazy offensive zone penalties. A lot of them.
Can’t finish: He gets breakaways and clear chances and misses or hits the goalie in the chest.
Doesn’t use his size to hit.

Guaranteed he will drive the average Oiler fan bat shit crazy.

I personally think this is way, way too much term and money for the player. This is a massive overpayment for what he brings, make no mistake. I was thinking with his past history of bouncing around on one year deals he would come around a 3 x $3M price tag.

He will help the team on the 3rd line, don’t get me wrong. Happy we got him. Very unhappy about the cost.

And again, MARK. MY. WORDS– those lazy hooking penalties in the offensive zone will drive you mad.

  146. denny33 says:

    nycoil,

    Good report thanks.

  147. finn_fann says:

    striatic,

Fair enough, but for the oilers, these actually seem like excellent value. NHL players at market price is something I don’t remember seeing here in a long time. I was expecting two more Nikitin-style contracts and a bunch of glaring holes still left open on the roster. Five years stings a bit, but it sounds like stability was his biggest reason for signing in Edmonton.

Maybe to put my enthusiasm in context – remember when we signed Cam Barker for 2 million a year?

  148. FPB94 says:

Yeah. NycoiL’s report is pretty good. He’s a 3rd liner who can be a 2nd liner…. for awhile.

I think it’s a pretty damn good deal. He’s the kind of guy the Oilers need.

  149. limit says:

Simply put, championship teams build down the middle, with 3 Cs deep, a #1 D, and elite goalie. Oilers running into cap squeeze after Petry/Schultz signs with weakness down the middle is a poor use of cap space. Even if cap inflates, and avg player makes 3-4mln, the dollars need to be allocated down the middle (eg. another 6mil/yr for Drais after 3 yrs, 4mil for Nurse/Klef/Marincin), not to 3rd line wingers who should be homegrown developed low-cost like Arco/Lander. Save the 1st rounder for 2015 it’s gonna be a valuable one for picking up a #1 D in Hanifin/Kylington/Jeremy Roy.
