OILERS RECALL PAKARINEN

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled Iiro Pakarinen from the Oklahoma City Barons. The recall (or a recall) was expected after two Oilers forwards (Taylor Hall and Benoit Pouliot) were injured last night. Pakarinen may play tomorrow night against Pittsburgh and we can assume there will be more news on the injured players as we move along toward tomorrow’s game time.

More to come.

    Iiro the Hero!
Hope he has a good game Wednesday, I really like his style of game.

  2. RexLibris says:

    Good on him.

I hope he sticks for awhile because a) I think he is a potential player and b) it would mean that Hall is sat for the rehabilitation that he requires.

History would suggest, though, that the Oilers recall him, play Hall next game and sit Pakarinen in the press box for ten games before sending him down because they don’t like his game in practice.

    Too cynical?

    RexLibris,

Not too cynical. Nice way to wrap the last thread, Rex.
Now to learn how to say hamsters and because Oilers in Greek.

LeBrun says Sharks will consider moving Niemi. We’ve discussed that item here before. People seem pretty divided on this one.

The issue is how much will he get paid. The reality is that really only Minny, among the other teams, may be looking for a starting goalie this summer. Therefore there isn’t a ton of competition for his services. The contract should have an AAV starting with a 4.

I think the following story, which I also posted at the end of the last thread says a great deal about the modern era of scouting and how hard it is to find sleepers in today’s NHL.

So it turns out that the excitement around Erik Cernak is that the Dallas Stars, New York Rangers, and Chicago Blackhawks are all scouting him.

Jiri Hrdina who now scouts for Dallas said he would be a good fit in Dallas and would be a reasonable first round pick and wouldn’t go later than the 2nd round. This is because he won’t turn 18 until May of 2105, is already 6’3″ and 203 and captained Slovakia’s under 18 team. He is also a gifted skater and already playing against men. In other words he is projectable, another talented big man without outstanding stats playing in a league where it is very hard to evaluate him.

When Hrdina gives him the big endorsement suddenly every NHL team is interested explaining the now routine pilgrimages to see him play by nearly every NHL team wondering if they are missing something. I am guessing Dallas isn’t very happy with Hrdina. There is no word if Edmonton is one of the team’s scouting Cernak but it sounds like almost every NHL team is and thus his rise in McKenzie’s poll and it sounds like he might rise even further.

If Hrdina is right he is going to look like a genius. It is not often we can attach a player’s ranking to an individual scout.

The Artist formerly known as "NYCOIL",

I’d wait until the off-season to see what the other 28 GMs do in net and with their cap space before I’d be ready to say that the goalie market is either bullish or soft.

Heaven only knows what other GMs will decide and it would really only take one retirement to set off a cascade of strange happenings.

As for Niemi, if I had my way I’d run with Niemi/Fasth.

Scrivens is decent goalie and one hell of a person but his puck handling is so chaotic and his positioning so reactive that the bloom is off the rose for me.

    VOR,

    Thanks for that. Interesting.

Anyone know who the best goalie avail is in the upcoming draft ? Is it a landslide ? Or is this a weak year for goalie prospects? Maybe that late first or early second could be used if it’s deemed worth.

When do we see MM back ? Aulie just does nothing for me ..

fasth + a conditional 3rd for niemi? if he resigns… if not 7rder lol

  9. VOR says:

Haters it is actually a good year for goalies.

Callum Booth and McKenzie Blackwood, with Ilya Samsonov the dark horse are the top three. Pick them in any order you like because goalies are totally unpredictable. All will go late first or early second. I’ve heard Oilers are high on Blackwood. I sure as hell hope not.

  10. Hammers says:

Not so sure Niemi would be the answer but I would consider it if 1 of our current goalies was part of the deal along with him signing a contract for at least 2 years . Goal is still a huge problem for the Oilers . Heard about Pakiren last night and would like to see him with Lander . Still hoping Pouliot is fit and looks like Hall should get the time he needs , whatever length it is .

i thought that ilya sorokin was a top international goalie prospect? The one that played for russia. Either way, i wouldnt mind drafting a goalie if we werent so god damn bad at drafting goalies.

I’m hearing really good things about Obscurefinnishgoalie Availableinseventhround. Sounds like he might be a great sleeper pick.

MacKenzie Blackwood has been mentioned as top G.

Ilya Sorokin a great goaltending prospect was drafted by the New York Islanders 78th in 2014. Ilya Samsonov tore up the under 18s with a .947 SV%. He’d be ranked higher but he has only a short but spectacular history in the MHL and stunk up the joint in his one and only KHL appearance.

Eerie, how long it took for this call-up. Were the Oil trying to save cap room?

As for the goalies… Bachman is UFA this summer. I wonder if the right play is to not sign him, re-sign Fasth and then assign Bartleby to OKC and save 900K of his $2.3M cap hit. If he doesn’t make it through waivers… oh well. Can’t be that hard to find another decent AHL keeper. If he does make it through waivers, then you have good cover for goalie injuries.

Fleming was on Oilers Now today and stated he felt Broissoit should not be brought up this year even for a cup of Joe Thibault. Needs another year and a half in the A before he will be ready–as it looks to Fleming right now.

  16. RexLibris says:

    spoiler,

I’d agree with that assessment on Brossoit.

    Leave him to continue developing.

What positive thing could he take from playing behind this group this season? It would serve absolutely no purpose.

Bachman is what he is, if you want to call up someone after you move Fasth then pick him.

  17. Woodguy says:

No recall on the D means there are exactly 6 healthy Dmen on the roster.

    What’s with these guys?

Its not like Nikitin’s shoulder is going to magically heal.

Maybe they’re afraid he’ll be in the IR at the end of the season and won’t be able to buy him out so they’re just going to leave him on the active roster.

I’m just spitballing because no sane NHL GM runs with only 6 Dmen for 3 games straight right?

    Right?

    Woodguy,

Like I said above, are they trying to save cap room for some reason?

I believe Pakarinen has played some D in the past. Maybe he is both the 13F and 7D.

There’s trying to save $/cap and then there’s running on a razor’s edge.

    Woodguy,

Agreed, but can you think of another explanation?

They will definitely have to call up a defensemen for the road trip.

They just removed “anticipated post-season revenues” from the budget again?

Oilers could be saving pennies for a deadline acquisition (bad contract) but that seems unlikely. It’s more likely the owner sent a memo saying “Dear bleeding money: STOP IT!”

Why do the Oilers had Marincin? There is no good reason to be playing Aulie in a lost season. Even if they have decided to have an irrational hate for Marincin, they should still call him up and see what he can do so he is better trade bait.

The Edmonton Oilers – devaluing assets is our number one priority

Why not give him a look regardless?

He’s been one of the best goalies in the AHL for a few years now. He was picked for the All Star game this year. He’s only a year older than Scrivens and three years back of Fasth.

When Acton got his shot at the start of the year is was in part for “being a good soldier”. Bachman’s won the Purple Heart three years running and still can’t get a sniff. He’s one of the main reasons OKC has been successful.

Let’s see what we have before we let it walk away. Might be nothing. Might be something. Worth at least a half dozen games in a nothing season.
