OILERS AT 124: ETHAN BEAR

Love this pick. I had him No. 38.

  • Red Line Report: Shutdown rearguard plays against the opposing teams’ top line every night and refuses to give away even an inch of space. Owns a laser shot that often finds the net – keeps it low and often produces dangerous rebounds. A good skater who likes to take the puck deep
into the offensive zone and create chances, yet still has the speed to get back on defence.

    Very happy with this.

Would have been happier with Timashov or Leveille instead of Jones, but happy with this.

    Blake speers gone yet LT?

  3. misfit says:

I like it more than the Jones pick. Plus…bear

Always nice to have at least one guy in the whl to follow

  6. striatic says:

    YES!

Go to a few T-Birds games every year and Bear has been a big part of their recent turnaround. I love this kid. He and Barzal have made local hockey games a treat to watch again since Calvin Pickard left.

  7. Chamucks says:

    dammit tambellini,

Jones will be in Portland next year.

  8. blainer says:

Unlike a lot of the posters here I am happy with the moves at this draft. Enough with the futures. Trying to get better now is the correct idea. We swapped MM foe A RT handed copy.. Nothing wrong with that..

  9. Rondo says:

Maybe they will pick David Cotton or Chebykin

Good pick. Blue Bullet had him at 90. Good numbers, good size, and he’s a youngish birthday.

    Tough, RHD.

Trades end up being Marincin/Ewanyk for Gryba/Ross. Ross has signed in Germany http://www.iserlohn-roosters.de/roostersnews/6531 … Oilers free up spot on 50-man roster.

Chia traded Marincin for a guy who is signed in Germany?

  14. striatic says:

One concern about Bear is that he has benefitted immensely from playing regularly with Shea Theodore but Bear is a very well rounded player in his own right.

If he keeps listening to MacT, Schultz will get the same contract Dougie Hamilton has coming.

No they traded him for a guy who busted and now plays in Germany. It’s not like he left cause he was pissed at management. He left cause he doesn’t have a future.

Looking at war-on-ice, it looks like Gryba was Ottawa’s fourth best D last season. Ceci, Phillips and Cowen all had easier zone starts and only marginally better corsi.

    Gryba really doesn’t look bad.

  23. Woodguy says:

    Yost again on Gryba:

Can’t wait for damage control , we wait for the spin.

  27. blainer says:

    Edm against Ottawa this year..

Marincin .. 16 plus mins no hits..

Gryba 17 plus mins ..7 hits..

The oilers like their D to be Physical and be able to break up the cycle…

  28. Marc says:

Is anyone on LT’s list still unpicked?

  29. striatic says:

blainer: We swapped MM foe A RT handed copy..

It is a very lateral move.

All around, Marincin has the edge. Similar usage, slightly better results but Gryba is a Right Shot and fills a positional need better. Got somewhat worse to be a little more balanced. Very underwhelming but not apocalyptic.

  30. dangilitis says:

Did they give up the 3rd this year to sj for mclellan? If so that’s a bad choice in a deep draft year unless they need it to make a wicked offer sheet to Hamilton. That is my only hope left. Turning 5 picks in the first 3 rounds into talbot reinhart and mclellan (opting this year) is underwhelming more because if marincin being considered expendable when his pros are the same as reinhart (potential pedigree whl resume and years before ufa). Gryba is only a win if they dispense with nikitin – it is tough to separate all these deals, they didn’t happen in a vacuum. The bear pick is also interesting because in many ways it could be like reclaiming the 33 or 57 but they couldn’t have known that at the time.

  31. Chris says:

Yea is there anyone halfway interesting still around at 154?

  32. Oil2Oilers (formerly VanOil) says:

Wouldn’t surprise me if Reinhart-Gryba opens the 2015-16 season as Edmonton’s 3rd pairing on defence.

That means Ference, Schultz and Nikitin play up the roster!

    Yay!!

  34. zatch says:

I can live with Gryba on the bottom pair for a year. But all but Klef and Fayne are bottom pair or worse.

I would happily trade next years 1,2, and a “prospect” for anyone who can actually play a top pairing.

Fuck I hate this team so so so so so so so so much almost all the time. I’m tired of being angry at it.

  35. Chris says:

  39. Kris11 says:

The only thing I’m unhappy with is the 1st for Reinhardt. A second and a third, or two seconds, or some prospects for Reinhart is a good deal, but the first in a deep draft was a mistake.

Then again, that pick was probably a gift from the Gords in the first place, because the Perron deal could’ve yielded less. And it is hard for me to let wasting a mid first rounder ruin my CMD buzz.

The Talbot deal is excellent, and is the primary reason the Oil don’t have many picks, but it is worth it.
The Gryba for a fourth rounder is fine, Maybe even good. He is better than replacement, waiver-wire level.

Moving out Marincin would not have been my choice but I think it was the best price offered and I suspect something happened with Marincin where it was a necessity that he be moved. The team has pretty much implied something is wrong between them and Marincin.

The actual later picks made are not bad.

I am happy with Chia for now. (Though worried a bit.) And I am overjoyed with CMD and Talbot.

It looks like a god damn cluster fuck. Only thing you you can hope for is they bite the bullet on NN and buy him out, find a way to dump one of the other ones and get a couple of puck movers in UFA. Seems unlikely.

FWIW, I’m liking the Oilers late round picks right now.

  54. Kris11 says:

    dangilitis,

I’m not defending the Oilers. They clearly are at fault for the ruined professional relationship with Marincin. And it probably could’ve been fixed by the new coaching. But I don’t think many GM’s would’ve done differently than just sell Marincin for whatever is the highest bid given this state of affairs. Maybe I’m wrong.

  55. blainer says:

Maybe they sign Sekera or Michalek.. They need a vet D there for these youngins..

  56. Woodguy says:

  57. DBO says:

Wow. Everyone relax. It is the draft. Yes we liked Marincin, a decent defenceman who wasn’t physical, but could make a pass for a physical guy who can’t make one, but who is RH, which is an issue.

Chia has a plan. Relax. Wait till July 10th before freaking out. I have zero issue with moving picks outside the top 10. Those players are years away. We have moved picks, a decent 4-6 dman who some in the org clearly dislike for his sideburns, and a prospect in Ewanyk f
    For
Reinhardt (who was 4th overall, two way physical dman with size who who has shot at helping this year and is on entry level deal), Gryba (physical 5-7 RH dman) and the best available goalie.

So to sum up, we added 4 actual NHL players (McDavid as one) who can play right now, for picks and one NHL player who, while many here liked him, wasn’t in long term plans.

Chia will sign one or two dman, dump Nikitin and get a solid winger for McDavid. It’s going to be Ok people.

  58. John Chambers says:

    Woodguy,

Calgary has seen a real turn around at the draft table since Sutter was gassed. Feaster was a breath of fresh air, but Treliving is taking things to a ‘whole ‘nother level’.

  93. dangilitis says:

Well the d has not been sorted out – I don’t think it’s any better than before the draft and we gave up 16/33 to make a lateral move (reinhart for marincin, the latter of whom has actually nhl experience)

Gryba only makes sense if nikitin is gone and that would be welcome news

The goalie is a very good get but he’s young and doesn’t have the experience of a vet to handle a year like dubnyk endured in Edmonton.

Bear was a good damn draft pick where he was at and does somehow make up a little for the loss of #33, credit where due.

But the D is no better. Say what you will about waiting until the fall, that is fair. However the ufa signings and what they choose to do with nikitin ference and Schultz are quite independent from what they did in the last 2 days – for example, no cap space was cleared to make room for an rfa.

I really hope the oilers offer sheet Hamilton or someone else does it should not be this easy for Calgary to sign him.

Has vlad been drafted yet ? Can the oilers get him as a free agent now ?

  94. Chris says:

    Woodguy,

Woodguy we have Cam Talbot according to you we just traded for Patrick Roy circa 1993, and we also drafted Connor fricking McDavid. You being moppy is weird.

  95. Younger Oil says:

Toronto with a couple of good picks, Timashov and Korostelev

Leveille is the only one on my list left, really hope they get him.

  96. mustang says:

PC was obviously listening to Green on Reinhardt. Was it a step price? yes. But we got a dman who will compete, make a big hit, stop the cycle, can pass the puck and has a big shot. He won’t be a #1 but could be a good #3. I think he has a good chance in Edmonton. I liked that they wanted to step up the process a bit. PC isn’t done yet, remember Rome was not built in a day. MM has the ability to be a good dman in the NHL, but the guy was not competing or getting stronger, he is soft as melted butter and won’t last in the NHL that way. I think he needed a wake up call because he will be hearing the same things in Toronto about getting stronger and start to compete at a NHL level. I’m glad MM won’t be standing up for #97 this year~

All in all I like what happened in the draft, not much is going to take away from the fact we have the best player coming to Edmonton and will be here for many years. Cheers and stay away from the high level bridge!!

  97. dangilitis says:

Also marincin for 107 only made sense if the bad player thrown in was going to toronto, how chiarelli allowed that is beyond me. Nikitin at 3 mil should have been thrown in, that would have made me very happy.

    Woodguy,

Woodguy we have Cam Talbot according to you we just traded for Patrick Roy circa 1993, and we also drafted Connor fricking McDavid. You being moppy is weird.

    I’m not mopey.

I look at each transaction on its own.

    McDavid – WOOOOOOOOTTT!!!!
Reinhart – overpayment – has more draft pedigree than ability imo – sure NHLer but not a high ceiling. 3rd pairing/AHL next year
    Talbot – WOOOOOOOTTT!!
Marincin for 4th and freeing up a 50 man spot- crock of shit
Gryba for the 4th – Not bad, but Oilers bottom pairing now has 7 players to fill it
    Jones pick – Meh
    Bear pick – Good
    Marino pick – Good

  100. DocFan says:

This has been a strange weekend. Sort of like getting engaged to the girl of your dreams while on the drive home your car catches on fire and explodes on the side of the highway.

You can easily forget the amazement of landing the girl of your dreams (McDavid) while focusing on the moment at hand of an exploding car (Marincin, 16/33 for Reinhart, Gryba) etc.

    So far, in this draft:

    The Good; McDavid, Talbot

The Bad: Marincin for Gryba and no picks inside the top 100.

    Undecided: Reinhart

The way I see this – Chia’s 2 main objectives – fix the G and the D. He got his man for the G, and the D I feel is still a work in progress.

I think we need to give him another month or two to see what he pulls together. We may very well be driving a shitty rental car while we wait for the insurance to pay us out. It’s possible we find an amazing replacement that makes us forget about the pile of carbon on the side of the highway. And remember, we still got the dream girl.

If Chia pulls in 1 or 2 free agents to fill out the defense, flushes 2/3s of FSN, then how amazing will that be.

Or maybe we play the year with a bunch of 5,6,7’s. We Wait.

    Not true.

    From Matty:

“Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli said he had been talking to the Islanders since he got hired two months ago. He was a fan of Reinhart’s exceptional Memorial Cup performance when he was Boston Bruins general manager.”

  105. rickithebear says:

  107. Cahoon says:

So if they unload NSF (maybe a cap floor team takes one of Ference or Nikitin, and you could legit trade shultz), sign Michalek and run something like:

    Klefbom-Michalek
    Nurse-Fayne
    Reinhart-Gryba
    Davidson

is that legit? A mentor for all the young D men? I think that is an upgrade on last season’s defense.

  109. spoiler says:

    Woodguy: I’m not mopey.

Really? Because it seems like a disproportionate number of posts have been vitriolic despite all the good that has been done.

  110. Chris says:

I mean I get the idea that we all want to be like Chicago and have young talent coming up to cheaply fill holes once the existing players become too expense. But hell let’s get good first.

We got McDavid and Talbot. We all agree this is good.

Chia took a big swing on Reinhart with the results to be determined. But we needed a goalie and to fix the defense at least the GM is trying to address the problems with the roster.

  111. spoiler says:

    Marc:
    From Gregor’s piece at ON:

“Speaking with scouts at the draft, Marincin’s value around the league was much lower than it was amongst some in Edmonton. Pretty much every scout echoed my thoughts on him. He has NHL skill and smarts, but has shown a lack of competitive desire in games. Three scouts who watched AHL playoffs were disappointed he didn’t dominate at the AHL level. They all said teams would still take a chance on him, because of his skill, but his trade value is low. ”

That sounds pretty much dead on.

  112. speeds says:

So what’s the plan on D? Buyout/trade Ference and/or Nikitin?

Go with Fayne, Ference, Schultz, Nikitin, Klefbom, Gryba, and Reinhart, Nurse in the AHL?

Sign a UFA, both Reinhart and Nurse in the AHL?

    An absolute catastrope.

#16 + #33 + Marincin for Reinhart is unspeakably bad.

Marincin is better than Reinhart. Therefore they gave away the #16 and the #33 for nothing. Nothing.

In a redraft of the 2012 Draft Reinhart would be scrambling to stay at 15th or so in an admittedly weak draft behind Maata, Lindholm, Trouba, Reilly, Murray, Dumba all of whom have played a full season or more in NHL and in case of the first 5 who are already playing top 4 minutes. Dumba is coming on fast as well. And we gave up 16 and 33 in a strong draft with excellent players still on the board at 16.

Reinhart also has a history of injuries. Most gp’s in last 4 years is 67 last year.

We may actually have seen another Steve Kelly/Shane Doan, Zach Parise/ MA Pouliot moment by the Oilers. They traded for someone they are familiar with, loving his draft pedigree (think Barker/Tuebert) and not knowing how he was actually progressing in the AHL. I would have preferred Pulock off of Bridgeports team

If CMD is a found $100,000, then what the Oilers wasted in the Reinhardt and Marincin deals is worth something closer to $1,000 than $50,000.

There’s no reason to waste $1,000, for sure. We agree.
