OILERS AT NO. 4: JESSE PULJUJARVI

Wow. Did not see this coming. He was ranked No. 3 by Bob McKenzie and most every service available. Amazing result.

  • Corey Pronman: He’s an unbelievable skater for a 6-foot-4 player, having a great top gear and a really fluid stride. He’s not that physically aggressive, but he closes on guys so well that he pressures and wins battles effectively. Puljujarvi shows a high-skill level, a plus shot and high-end hockey IQ. He is constantly around the puck and setting up his teammates.
  • Red Line Report: Big horse looks and plays like a Mats Sundin clone. Has the four S’s: size, skills, skating, shot. Has all the tools to be a dominant power forward who combines top-notch skills with brute force. Terrific size/strength and is impossible to move off the puck — uses wide stance and is hard on his stick. Comes alive whenever the puck is nearby. Wants to make plays. Dynamic skater accelerates in a few strides and has excellent speed. Uses long reach and soft hands to beat “D” off the rush. Dangerous every shift. Excellent puck control, often impossible to contain. Receives tough passes without slowing down. Drives the net and protects the puck well. Has good hands in close with vision and playmaking skills. Responsible two-way player has good defensive awareness. Played the playoffs and U-18 Championships with a knee injury that required surgery after the season. Source
  • The Black Book: This very talented Finn brings to the game a rare blend of power, skills and commitment. He is quick for a big kid and is an impressive skater who uses his speed to impact the play in different ways. He can be very effective on the forecheck, leaving defensemen little time to escape pressure.

  • Steve Kournianos, The Draft Analyst: Puljujarvi is an extremely dangerous player who can be used in any situation, and being 6’3 doesn’t hinder his ability to adapt to a variety of situations; he can play on the power play, kill penalties, take a man out with a hit or cleanly stickhandle in very tight spaces. He owns an excellent shot, only it’s slightly less accurate than the sharpshooting Laine. Puljujarvi’s at his best when he’s got the puck in full flight, but that doesn’t mean he’s rendered useless during the slogging matches. He’s really mature and has a genuine “die hard” mentality. Even more impressive is that he rarely, if ever, gets complacent. Source
  • Kelly Friesen (Scout’s take): “He’s a hungry attacker who blends size, quick in-tight mobility and a seeing-eye shot to be dubbed one of the most feared attackers of his age group. Puljujärvi is a high volume shooter who attacks seams with quick powerful strides that separate him from opposing checkers. Inside the offensive zone, Puljujarvi evades defenders using elusive inside-outside cuts on the fly as he slashes off the half wall striking quickly. The promising Finn utilizes his lengthy reach to shield off pressure extremely well.” Source
  • Elite Prospects: Puljujärvi is a big winger who combines size, skating and skill. A strong skater who can blast past the opposition in full speed. Able to use his size, reach and stickhandling skills to retain the puck in speed. A smart player at both ends of the ice, both on and off the puck. Great work ethic and positive attitude. More of a playmaker than a scorer and could improve his shooting skills. Doesn’t shy away from physical play, but could use his size more to his benefit. Source
  • Goran Stubb, NHL Director of European Scouting. “He’s a powerful skater with good speed and balance,” said Goran Stubb, NHL Director of European Scouting. “He has outstanding hockey sense and reads the play well. He’s a good playmaker with strong puck-handling skills. He can take advantage of 1-on-1 situations with his long reach.” Source

So much skill left on the board after day 1. DeBrincat, Abramov, Raddysh, Mascherin, Hart. Looking forward to tomorrow!

  2. Younger Oil says:

Did Debrincat play on a line with McDavid in Erie?

If so, you’d think he’s a lock if he slips past Toronto.

Could replace Ebs in a couple of years.

  3. PunjabiOil says:

    I would prefer DeBrincat.

Stauffer seems to suggest one of Benson/Hart.

While Benson’s boxcars are not that good, on a point per game he was among the team leaders. Low scoring team.

    We wait.

  4. ashley says:

Pascal Laberge is another French Canadian who perhaps reignites the EDM-MTL PK talks overnight.

He’s not in the same league as Dubois though. That was the main prize for MTL snatched away by CBJ.

I don’t believe a word MB is saying. My full-of-shit meter was redlining when they interviewed him on the draft floor.

I think MTL intends to trade PK before July 1. I think Drai and Yak would be fair. They could have Pouliot or Fayne too if they really wanted one of them.

I don’t know if it will be a Subban trade, but I would love to see #32 as part of a package that turns into a young NHL Dman instead of making the pick. There should be some interest.

The maximum value of that pick is right now which also makes it hard to trade.

  5. AsiaOil says:

I think if that was possible then Columbus takes him. The Blue Jackets drafted for need and we benefited with the better player falling to us. Perfect result really with us getting the consensus #3 pick and Dubois going out of the division. Really didn’t want to see that guy 5 or 6 times a year. Vancouver gets Jurki Lumme and Calgary a complementary winger – best result possible.

    Gerta Rauss:
Love the pick at 4, a little bit of luck and we’ll take it

I like that JP has played a bit of C, maybe they bring him along slowly with an emphasis at the Center position

I agree that MB intends to move Subban before July 1st. I really wonder if he reduces his asking price as the deadline approaches and his bluff dissolves.

    Pretty sure he did.

I’d be worried TML might take him at #31, but as someone pointed out earlier, they have small forwards already in Marner, W. Nylander, etc.

I was still thinking it could be part of a Shattenkirk deal.
    eg. #32, Reinhart, conditional 2017 1st (top-5 protected and based on re-signing).

Suggested it last week but don’t know how everyone feels about that with the names still left on the board.

    I’d rather Raddysh over Bastian.

  14. Younger Oil says:

Bastian was pretty poor at even strength, don’t think he’d be an NHLer in the future.

  15. leadfarmer says:

How far is Debrincat going to fall. You expect at least 10 spots, but does he get picked in the middle of the second round? End of the round? Feel bad for the guy for being height challenged,

  16. Gerta Rauss says:

AsiaOil: I think if that was possible then Columbus takes him

I tend to agree, and I wonder what CBJ saw/didn’t see that made CBJ reach that conclusion, especially considering that PLD has only played half a season at C

Either way, a 6’4 right shot forward with great skating can play on my team any day

  23. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

He admitted the Blue Jackets attempted to swap picks with the Oilers, but the Oilers likely got a sense that Columbus wasn’t going to take Puljujarvi, so they weren’t going to offer much value in return.
“We tried,” Kekalainen said. “The only safe pick really to move back to was four knowing that Edmonton would have taken Puljujarvi at three probably. We tried. We were on the phone all morning before the draft started to see if we could do something like that. Dubois was our guy at No. 3, so you don’t want to take a chance of losing him.”

I still keep coming back to Chia’s interview with Gazzola yesterday: we have left shot D who play the right side on our radar. I do worry a lot Brodin is involved.

    And Minny needs a C.

I hope it does not happen, though.

3 and Jenner for 4. Love having a veteran GM.

  43. Chris says:

I expect that it’s going to be either Raddysh, Laberg or Benson. Chia is pretty dialed in on wanting a combination of size and skill. When there are talented big men on the board I can’t see him taking a guy whom is 5’7.

    Maroon – McD – Puj
    Yaks – Nuge – Kassian
    Juju – Hendricks – Paks

  45. Stelio Kontos says:

Also those saying Demers will cost a fortune need to stop being over dramatic. We saw a massive shift during last years free agency. Sekera should have been more than he was, and overall it was pretty quiet. A lot of teams are still cash strapped, and many that aren’t are stamkos hunting. The one week window seems to make GMs less panicked.

Yeah, Chia played ’em like a late-night meat draw. Liking this guy, ‘stache and all.

  49. Chris says:

The rumours are Nuge to Minnesota for Dumba plus or Brodin plus. If the cost is Yakupov and something that’s not one of our better players sure it would be okay. But Minnesota is after Nuge and we collectively want none of it.

  50. Alpine says:

Would Dumba/Spurgeon + Coyle for RNH + Reinhart be reasonable? Obviously Dumba isn’t as good as Spurgeon but he’s 4 years younger and bigger. It’s not the trade I want to do, but it would leave room for us to get Demers and have the other one as the 2RD. Coyle is a nice player who’s a RH centre.

    http://edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/nhl/edmonton-oilers/edmonton-oilers-minnesota-wild-have-been-talking-about-trade-involving-defenceman

Chia confirms Minnesota talks. Hopefully he’s wise enough and just using that as an last resort option.

If they can extent Shattenkirk, he’d be my target. Move Eberle if you have to. Then trade for Ennis on the cheap.

The Sabres, who are looking for faster and cheaper forwards, have reportedly talked to the Oilers about unhappy winger Nail Yakupov, who has one year remaining on his $2.5-million salary. Word is Buffalo has been shopping right-winger Tyler Ennis and his $4.6 million salary the next three seasons, trying to divest themselves of some money to go after possible unrestricted free-agent forward Steve Stamkos and may have talked to the Oilers about him. Ennis, of course, is from Edmonton and played junior in Medicine Hat when current Edmonton head of amateur scouting Bob Green was working for the WHL Tigers.

  57. Stelio Kontos says:

Thing with Debrincat is what do you do with him? I think he still needs to add a stronger base to play in the NHL, but he is in the class of players who have nothing left to prove in junior. Maybe steer him towards college or Europe. He needs to start adapting to play against men.

Also WOOOOOOOOOOOT!!! I was bouncing my 7 month old around while trying to explain what the Jackets had just done.

Once we fell out of the lottery I never thought we’d land one of the Finns, but one of the points that I heard about Pool Party that I loved were he was playing way less TOI than Laine and putting up similar production.

    Yes, that’s what I’m thinking/hoping as well

Eberle + salary for Spurgeon + more salary

I don’t think Minny wants to trade Spurgeon, but if we can help them out with some cap relief it may be a conversation worth having

*edit-if the ask is Nuge I’m not interested

  63. maxwell_mischief says:

I’m a kyrou fan but I would love Debrincat. From video seems like an elusive little guy who sneaks into the dirty areas and uses his skill to finish. I also like Abramov – he looks like Bure. But the last time we said that about a Russian sniper it didn’t work out. Lots of options… Raddysh, Benson, Hart

  64. YKOil says:

    PunjabiOil:

Chia can undo the good today by trading RNH for Brodin/Dumba

Have no interest in Brodin or Spurgeon. Would be amenable to a deal that revolved around getting both of Coyle and Dumba and would try to make that deal work.

Does speak to an underlying issue – Oiler gives are too good for small deals but, outside of Hall, not good enough to demand a bigger deal.

Even if I think RNH is ‘big’ enough to demand Dumba and Coyle or Dumba and Kunin and another pick… Minnesota probably doesn’t think so. Which means we may get stuck with some abomination like RNH for Spurgeon or Brodin and I don’t think that improves us at all.

    I vastly prefer sticking with:

    Pouliot-McDavid-Eberle
    Hall-Draisaitl-Puljujarvi
    Maroon-RNH-Yakupov
    Hendricks-Letestu-Kassian/Pakarinen

And making smaller deals for guys like Redmond and Pysyk to fill out the right side defense. With any luck at all a healthy season will make a huge difference in jumping the Oilers up the standings and in the Leagues opinion of players like Eberle and RNH (and Yakupov).

None of this is relevant to whether you pick him or not.

He’s the best player with the best track record remaining. You pick him. He also happened to ride shotgun for McJeebus.

  66. Acumen says:

While it’s all well and good to worry about the D, I want everyone to realize that when healthy and intact we may have a case for possessing the league’s best set of forwards. And the unicorns have Excaliburs for horns…

    Pouliot Nuge Ebs
    Hall Draisaitl Yakupov
    Maroon McDavid Pulju
    Hendy Letestu Kassian

That is basically impossible to defend or plan for.

  67. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

If Chia can pull a bait and switch and send Eberle instead of Nuge for Spurgeon, great. But really not interested in Nuge for Spurgeon, Dumba or Brodin.

    Spurgeon is good.
Dumba in my opinion is like a righty Nurse with a bigger shot but no sure upside.
Brodin is an excellent shut-down D in the making but is left handed and doesn’t provide any offense.

  68. Shizuka says:

Eberle to Minn for a D man is palatable — Nuge for the same deal is not. Do not continually keep throwing young players to the wolves of the West, Chiarelli. You need RNH to shelter them for at least one more year. I have hope he sees the value of RNH after his comments re: the world cup team stuff, and will not do something stupid like trading him out for an undersized guy in Spurgeon / Dumba. Eberle is the one you should push.

Spurgeon is the guy to get from Minny if you trading RNH. Dumba if you trading Pouliot or Yakupov. Never trade for Brodin, ever.

  73. Ducey says:

    Chris:
I expect that it’s going to be either Raddysh, Laberg or Benson. Chia is pretty dialed in on wanting a combination of size and skill. When there are talented big men on the board I can’t see him taking a guy whom is 5’7.

    Exactly.

  74. Stelio Kontos says:

If Nurse and Reinhart take a step (Defensemen seem to arrive overnight), and we sign Demers, we could actually find ourselves in a decent situation. Lot of ifs, but rolling 3 1st lines is a scary thought.

    Pouliot McDavid Yakupov
    Hall Drai Eberle
    Maroon RNH Puljujarvi

I like having yak and Pouliot with McDavid, since it allows you to load up the Hall and RNH lines, and gives teams a more difficult decision matching lines.

    Klef Demers
    Davidson Sekera
    Nurse Fayne
    Reinhart

  75. Shizuka says:

Dominoiler: For the first time I’m actually warming up to a Lucic deal, but only because I’m dreaming of a low term deal.. 3 years, but that’s doubtful.. my question, does Lucic at 6M per significantly improve upon Pouliot at 4M?..

More importantly, how much will it cost to stock up on decent top 4 defense?!..

I doubt Lucic signs for less than a 5 year term. He knows this is the last chance to capitalize. I am lukewarm to the idea, because his potential signing would guarantee a Hall move out (not ideal unless it’s someone of Subban’s calibre coming back). Smaller moves on the back end is what I foresee now.

  76. Ice Sage says:

    NYCOIL “Gentleman Backpacker”: NMC?

Dang! I’m off the script now.
Just really trying to find what a mediocre team like Minnie could have to match our undisputedly awesome trade-bait 🙂

  77. Stelio Kontos says:

NYCOIL “Gentleman Backpacker”: We already had one of the best forward groups before this. Yet we do not score. Need D that can get them the puck.

They never had a good forward group. They have had 1-1.5 good lines, and crap that gave it all back. Last year included because of injuries.

  78. YKOil says:

Really like Laberge for the #32. I think Toronto takes him though.

  79. murphy says:

No deal with minny, it makes zero sense.

Eberle for an extended shattenkirk is a wet dream. Then go sign one of the big vet ufa RW’s (brouwer, oposko, backes, etc.). Take debrincat at 32 and you will be fine. There is a lot avaIlable in UFA for quality RW’s, take advantage and cash ebs for a d-man.

Lastly, send yak to buffalo (lots of confirmed reports they were interested earier this evening), for pysk to play with davdison.

Me too. Need more right-shot centers. Why not get one with a dynamic element?

  81. Stelio Kontos says:

LMHF#1: None of this is relevant to whether you pick him or not.

He’s the best player with the best track record remaining. You pick him. He also happened to ride shotgun for McJeebus.

I got ahead of myself. He is my pick.

  82. Psyche says:

My guess is EDM and MIN are talking about deal revolving around Pouliot and Dumba. MIN needs LW help. RNH is an overpay and would be great reunited with Rebel teammate Dumba.

Have to assume Fayne and Yakupov are in play. But, as per usual, it depends on the return fitting EDM’s needs and salary structure.

    Looking forward to tomorrow!

Not a big fan of any trade for Ennis; that 3rd year is a killer. I like Girgensons and Pysyk and would try to make that work.

Good wrap up by Gregor who was right in the middle of the action.

“A source close to the Oilers confirmed they have had talks with both the St.Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild. Kevin Shattenkirk, Jonas Brodin and Matt Dumba have been discussed. I got the sense Dumba was the more likely target than Brodin, but things can change. ”

From Gregors piece. Please click it.

  86. smellyglove says:

What do people have against Dumba? He’s a 22 year old RHD who put up 26 points playing 16 minutes a night last year, with positive relative corsi and fenwick.

That I could get behind. In Chia we Trust

    smellyglove,

I’m digging the idea of Asplund at #32. Responsible two-way forward, speed to burn, Carl Hagelin comparable.

  89. Dominoiler says:

Shizuka: I doubt Lucic signs for less than a 5 year term.. Smaller moves on the back end is what I foresee now.

Yeah, the Maroon deal really takes pressure off filling that role / player type.. nice mix of forwards, wow, hope JP delivers a well rounded game; way better news than getting another one dimensional type.. RHC and some top 4 help, getter done chia..

McD and PJ could terrorize some D w their speed.. long term potential to fill a skilled pk role, this could be really good..

  90. AsiaOil says:

Oh yeah – especially given our need for RHS RW – BPA and need lined up for us nicely.

Gerta Rauss: I tend to agree, and I wonder what CBJ saw/didn’t see that made CBJ reach that conclusion, especially considering that PLD has only played half a season at C

Either way, a 6’4 right shot forward with great skating can play on my team any day

  91. gd says:

The Minny talks seem bizarre. Their Centres are Koivu/Granlund/Coyle which seems okay, and if they want RNH as a #1 they must think he is worth at least Coyle/Spurgeon. Maybe it is Eberle for either Spurgeon or Dumba?

Ennis as an Eberle replacement is at least interesting as long as he is healthy. His contract means he has very little trade value, so maybe we can get him for Yak. I thought he played very well for TMc in the 2015 Worlds.

If they don’t trade 32, I hope they don’t pick a goalie, as there are at least 5 strong F picks available. A good F at 32 and if they can hit another reasonable F with one of the 3rds and their F prospect depth can at least be league average hopefully.

  92. Aron_S says:

    smellyglove,

I’m in this boat too. I’d definitely go after Dumba (Brodin is a pass), but if Minnesota is trying to acquire a Center why are we proposing Poo? RNH might be an overpay, but if it’s Dumba +, it gets a Top 4 RHD under control for 4-5 more years and we likely get another asset. Am I undervaluing Nuge here?

I remember my (then 16 year old) cousin in law wanted the Oilers to draft Dumba in 2012 instead of Yak. I laughed at him. Today I’d buy him a beer for that insight.

EDIT: Okay, I just realized I got the “they’re looking for a center” from Matheson. I now feel dumb. They have solid center depth.

  93. Stelio Kontos says:

Dumba’s not as small as I remember from his draft. Hockeydb has him at 6′. Pouliot for him would be fair imo. He could easily be the 2nd pairing offensive guy.

  97. Mr DeBakey says:

Jordan: That’s not entirely accurate – Raddysh is nearly 6’2″

Sorry, that was a typo should’ve said #4, not #3.

Raddysh at 32 has been on my radar for awhile.
Very decent ES numbers, good size, Right-handed

  98. Chris says:

My difficulty with many of the defensemen being rumored at this point seem more of what Chia called stop gaps rather than long term solutions. I would rather the Oilers not spend good assets on non solutions. If it’s Suban by all means swing for the fences but I question how much of a difference any of Shattenkirk, Dumba or Brolin make.

  99. wheatnoil says:

Just getting caught up in the thread.

    1) WOOOOOOOOOT!
    2) We focus on the MIN talk because Matty’s been pushing it and we fear Nuge for Brodin. NYCOIL’s point about mentioning guys who can play the right notwithstanding, I do get the sense Chiarelli prefers an RHD. So if it’s Brodin, it means be struck out everywhere else.
    3) I want DeBrincat but the verbal seems to be Benson. If it is, let’s not let the ‘they picked him because he’s a local kid’ narrative override the fact that he’s genuinely a good prospect.
    4) Man, this was a good day!

  100. prairieschooner says:

Chia was boxing clever today hopefully he has a productive day tomorrow
I know Brolin had a poor season last year but the guy can play according to the people Gregor has spoken to, perhaps a buy/trade low opportunity

  101. Halfwise says:

Yak for Brodin, fresh starts for each.

  102. Chris says:

If they pick Benson it will because he’s skilled and physical. Barring this past I jury plagued year he was a lock as an eRly first rounder

  103. GCW_69 says:

If the right trade for a top pairing guy isn’t there, Chiarelli needs to get creative.

He needs to find out what out would take to get Severson out of New Jersey. Severson is a legitimate second pairing defender who makes $606K It shouldn’t take crazy assets to get him because Severson is getting the full Eakins-Petry treatment from his coach. I would guess Yakupov plus would get it done. If not Pouliot should do it.

Then, go offer Demers a one year contract for $9M+.

It works for the Oilers because the combined salary of Demers and Severson of $9.6M is about what you should pay your 1RD and 2RD combined. The Oilers would not need to protect Demers in the expansion draft as a pending free agent, and after the draft they could resign him for more reasonable money or let him walk. They then could protect seven forwards and three defenders (Sekera, Klefbom, Severson), maximizing the number of players they can protect.

It should work for Demers because he makes close to double what he would otherwise expect next year with no worries about expansion. He takes some risk on getting injured, but a chance to double up in the short term might make him willing to take the risk.

It’s a GMs job to figure out how to game the system. I hope Chiarelli is creative.

  104. AsiaOil says:

Benson or Raddysh would be fine with me. Just as happy to trade the pick in a deal for a defenseman though. We’ll see what Chia can cook up overnight.

If the big fish RHD isn’t there – then trade for Dumba or Severson as # 3 RHD using assets like Yak, Ebs, GR and sign Demers. Money for Demers is not as important as no NMC – but it’s unlikely anyone will give him that with the expansion draft coming up. People are underestimating what even a guy like Severson will cost. Yak is not enough. Would have to be something like Yak and GR for Severson and #41

Minnie’s C depth sucks. Koivu is seriously over the hill, Granlund is a bust so that basically leaves Coyle.

Honestly this is about the most sensible, non regurgitated, concept I’ve seen in a long time. GM’s have not shown remotely close to enough savy with regards to gaming cap space in the short term like this yet.
