OILERS AT 91: FILIP BERGLUND

I had him at No. 61, and like this selection a lot.

  • Elite Prospects: A big and strong two-way defenseman with good hockey sense and passing ability. Valuable on the man advantage with a strong release and good puck control. Not a speedster and should use his large frame to his advantage.
  • The Black Book: Despite the large frame and not the fastest stride, Berglund actually has good finesse with the puck. He controls the puck very well and uses his size to protect it. Berglund has good instincts both when starting the transition out of his own zone as well as in the offensive zone. He has good vision and can regularly execute accurate passes. This allows him to complete accurate outlets, he also has enough puck-handling skills not to get flustered if he is pressured.

  1. Younger Oil says:

Kind of concerning they valued Cairns over Berglund IMO, but happy they got him nonetheless.

Swiss and Poland going to a shootout if people want something to do until the next Oiler pick.

  2. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

So is Berglund also a Chiarelli defenseman? I am just saying I think Chia isn’t Tambo and he respects skating on the back end. Some mix of sizes all around. Boston, too. Seidenberg, Krug, Boychuk, Chara, that is a lot of variety.

Anyway I am happy. Wanted this player since you alerted me to his numbers. Those are eye-popping.

  3. Centre of attention says:

Love this pick. I forgive them for adding to the leftorium now with the other 3rd rounders.

Have to think they cull the lefty herd, by the way. So many lefties.

  4. SwedishPoster says:

Well, I’ve got some scouting cred on the line here so he better turns out.

19 goals in the swedish league as a defenseman is ridiculous. absolutely bonkers.

  6. Loyal2theoil says:

    Younger Oil,

Oilers said Coffey mentored him on Marlboros.. reeks of MacT

  7. SumOil says:

Listening to Stauffer I felt they were going to pick Berglund at 84 and trade the 91st.

    Someone played poker there

  8. Acumen says:

Honestly, would not have been upset with him at 32. Over the moon.

  9. Younger Oil says:

If he doesn’t for Edmonton he will for Chicago 😀

  10. Chris says:

I know a lot of people would have been happier if we picked Berglund and then Cairns but whatever we got them both right?

Benson, the big Finn and Berglund are a nice days work. A lot of value there in my opinion.

  11. 36 percent body fat says:

Great draft so far, torn on the cairns pick. Scarry that he was ahead of berglund who was 33rd on the nhl list.

Sambrook would have been nice instead of cairns.

Now just pick the best scoring forwards.

I wonder who the Oilers’ Euro scouts are. Maybe you could sign up as a roving set of eyes for them!

  13. Loyal2theoil says:

I want Jordan Sambrook somewhere around here

  14. SumOil says:

for our selfish interest we do too

  15. doritogrande says:

    Mete goes 100th. Sad panda.

  16. stush18 says:

The oilers prolly felt cairns wouldn’t still be availible and grabbed him.

Hey LT, where was anatoli golyshev rates in your rankings? NYI grabbed him and he out scores players like radulov in the khl?

  17. digger50 says:

Like the picks, but would have traded for Psyk or DeAngelo

  18. Centre of attention says:

Sounds like Niemalainen could play for Helsinki in the Finnish elite league next season

  19. Tarkus says:

Oh man, Jack Campbell’s star (see what I did there?) has fallen:

Dan Rosen ‏@drosennhl 5m5 minutes ago Manhattan, NY

Stars traded goalie Jack Campbell, the No. 11 pick in 2010, to the Kings for defenseman Nick Ebert, the No. 211 pick in 2012.

  20. AnOmYnOuS1 says:

Really like this pick. When you can take a Swedish D!

RE Benson: Was slated to be a 1st rounder but injuries derailed that. 28/30 of his games and 26/28 points were from before the surgery. So most of his year he was playing through the pain. Probably limited his mobility because of the area. Not as high upside as some of the small guys, but has multiple ways to make it.

  21. Professor Q says:

Love this pick. I forgive them for adding to the leftorium now with the other 3rd rounders.

Depends on who they have left, however.

  22. Chris says:

Gregor is still on the board. I wouldn’t mind that as our fifth round pick.

  23. Stelio Kontos says:

Am I missing something on Sambrook?

  24. Centre of attention says:

Anyone else shocked Yak hasn’t been dealt yet? It’s been really quiet in general now that I think of it.

Very odd, considering the amount of smoke leading up to the draft.

  25. stephen sheps says:

Centre of attention: 19 goals in the swiss league as a defenseman is ridiculous. absolutely bonkers.

it is bonkers but he played in the Swedish J20 superelit league for his hometown club last year, not a Swiss team. Still the J20 is a very good development league and he’s slated to play for the senior team this season.

Not that intangibles like this really matter, but he also wore the “A” for his team this past season.

Very very happy about this pick.

  26. Shizuka says:

    Stelio Kontos:
Am I missing something on Sambrook?

There was a report saying he was interviewed by a number of teams for the draft, and that one in particular went very well: the team was the Oilers. Not sure if they still pick him though, we shall see shortly.

  27. Tarkus says:

    Chris:
Gregor is still on the board. I wouldn’t mind that as our fifth round pick.

Gregor just went 111 to the Sharks.

    Yet Sambrook remains…

If Benson scored at about a point a game pace with a public injury and he can recover 100%, this is a fantastic pick at 32.

I had issues with an inflamed pubic bone for 2 years. I’m 100% now.

Of course Im in my 30’s, I’m a “D” level beer league hockey player, so there is no comparision, but I tried to play through the injury and it affected my skating big time.

  29. Centre of attention says:

Professor Q: Depends on who they have left, however.

    I chuckled IRL.

  30. AnOmYnOuS1 says:

    Stelio Kontos:
Am I missing something on Sambrook?

I’m thinking LT may be correct regarding him “No. 105—RD Jordan Sambrook, Erie Otters (OHL). Solid two-way D, may be undervalued.” Maybe our next pick?

  31. Todd Macallan says:

Max fortier would be a great next pick, underrated. Sawchenko, Quenneville, Sambrook would be great as well

  32. Younger Oil says:

    Chris:
Gregor is still on the board. I wouldn’t mind that as our fifth round pick.

    Jinxed it!

  33. Tarkus says:

Jeebus…Nashville has made five picks thus far, all D but one.

I guess we’re not the only ones hoarding D this draft…

  34. doritogrande says:

Quenneville’s still on the board? Yes please.

  35. maxwell_mischief says:

    Couldn’t even get picks. Yeeesh.

  37. Lenny says:

I don’t know Swedish junior leagues at all but:

Berglund Draft year in SuperElite: 43 GP, 41P,
    Klefbom Draft+1 in SuperElite: 15GP, 4P

    Big fan of this pick.

Good day so far, not sure about Matt Cairns.

  38. Chris says:

Kuznetsov from the Q seems to still be around. Could be a nice pick.

  39. Centre of attention says:

Yes, you’re correct. It was the swedish league. Haven’t had enough coffee yet, I apologize for typos!

  40. GCW_69 says:

Damn, just catching up. Did the Oilers really pass on DeAngelo to take Benson? Can’t imagine Tampa didn’t call Chiarelli if trading him for a second rounder was something he was looking to do. Seems like little concepts escape them at moments like these:

    1) Defenders and Centres are more valuable than wingers
2)RHD with offensive ability and PP QB potential are really rare
    3) There are NO sure thing RHD in the prospect pool, even with last year’s adds

  41. Chris says:

Bleakly as a fifth or sixth rounder would be a nice gamble too. The kid had first round talent if he can overcome a wrist injury and we all think Colorado are dufuses.

  42. Centre of attention says:

Bob Stauffer ‏@Bob_Stauffer 11s12 seconds ago
…the most likely scenario for “Yak” if he is traded is for a player that has played in the NHL and might need a fresh start

Who is disgruntled around the NHL? Wasn’t there some smoke around Nichushkin wanting out of Dallas? Definitely a Chiarelli player, Oilers would have to add.

To be fair, bait for an expansion draft has some value.

And Yak does have value as a winger now that we definitely have 3 scoring lines.

  44. doritogrande says:

    There’s our goalie. Dylan Wells.

  45. Tarkus says:

    Dylan Wells at 123.

  46. Mr DeBakey says:

Some CHLers still on the Board

    Forward — Pos — ESPPG

    Alan Lyszczarczyk — C — 0.57
    Travis Barron — LW — 0.55
    Dmitry Sokolov — C — 0.49

Sokolov is fairly big, the other two midsized.
    All are lefties.
    Barron doesn’t turn 18 til mid-August

    Defenseman — SH — ESPPG

    Dawson Davidson — L — 0.44
    David Quenneville — R — 0.42
    Jordan Sambrook — R — 0.33
    Dylan Coghlan — R — 0.27

    Davidson & Quenneville are small
The other two project to “pro size”

No need to apologize, it’s easy mistake to make! I have the advantage of being in the eastern timezone, which means more coffee.

  55. Younger Oil says:

Why the FUCK would you think that’s worth a draft pick?!?!?

Right when they seem to be going in the right direction.

  56. Stelio Kontos says:

Wow, look at the goals per game. Wait, he’s a goalie.

  57. NYCOIL "Gentleman Backpacker" says:

Not sure where to post this….LT?

Great 2 min clip with Jesse Puljujarvi.

Edmonton is gonna love this kid. His family seems happy, too. “Better jersey than Columbus. Get to play with Hall and McDavid.”

“Doesn’t Korpikoski play there?” Can’t buy him out now!?

    https://youtu.be/ImvehTJSlyw

  58. Centre of attention says:

Dylan Wells had a good Hlinka Memorial tournament, could of tipped the Oilers hand. Definitely a ‘project’

  59. doritogrande says:

Of note, Wells pitched a shutout in the Super Series. How shitty was Peterborough this year?

  60. Chris says:

Great we drafted Kevin Bouchard again because some scout saw him play good for 15 minutes once.

  61. stephen sheps says:

wow this is a bad goalie pick.

saw him bad when I lived in Peterborough.
while this is clearly the worst scouting report ever posted on this blog, the numbers clearly match my uninformed eye test.

  62. maxwell_mischief says:

the Oilers have really buffed their second line in bakersfield with Benson, and got Bakersfield a top 4 option for years to come in Niemalainen. Dylan Wells should help keep the bakersfield bench warm.

  63. Marc says:

    Younger Oil:

  64. Raider Jesse says:

    Centre of attention,

It was the Swedish AAA league but still good show.

  65. Tarkus says:

Oilers could have scratched their goalie itch with Sawchenko instead.

    Oh well….

  66. maxwell_mischief says:

    Marc,

    HE”S NOT EVEN FKN TALL

  67. Raider Jesse says:

Wells was the starter above Hart at the Hlinka, and was the best goalie in the top prospects game….

I still don’t believe in drafting goalies ever.

  68. Younger Oil says:

Adam Werner, who the Avs just drafted looks so much better.

    Baffling.

  69. stephen sheps says:

    doritogrande,

Wells was the backup to Matt Mancina for the last 2 seasons.
Of note, Mancina put up a .910 sv% and a 2.97GAA in front of the same mediocre Petes team.

They were better last season than they were in 14/15 (the year I lived there)

  70. PokeCheck says:

I think goalies are only voodoo to the Edmonton Oilers. Plenty of other teams out there that aren’t drafting goalies that are second rate within their present leagues.
