G26 2016-17: DUCKS AT OILERS

I think we can safely list the Edmonton Oilers future: Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Darnell Nurse, Jesse Puljujarvi, Oscar Klefbom, Adam Larsson, Andrej Sekera, Milan Lucic, Cam Talbot, Matt Benning, Drake Caggiula.  RNH and Jordan Eberle? Probably, but the money is going to be the money before too long. Question: If this team is close, at the deadline, does Peter Chiarelli add useful players?

TABERNAC SATURDAY, YEAR OVER YEAR

  • Oilers in October 2015: 4-8-0, goal differential -7
  • Oilers in October 2016: 7-2-0, goal differential +10
  • Oilers in November 2015: 4-7-2, goal differential -6
  • Oilers in November 2016: 5-8-2 goal differential -3
  • Oilers in December 2015: 7-6-1, goal differential -9
  • Oilers in December 2016: 1-0-0, goal differential +3
  • Oilers after 25, 2015: 8-15-2, goal differential -16
  • Oilers after 25, 2016: 13-10-2, goal differential +10

This is a strong recovery season over season, +5  in the wins aisle, +10 in points and an outstanding +26 in goal differential. These are the days of miracle and wonder, don’t cry baby don’t cry don’t cry don’t cry. G26 a year ago? Edmonton beat Boston 3-2 in a shootout.

Will it result in a playoff berth? I still can’t see it. Calgary is two points back now, still lots of problems but their goalie is goaling and there are veterans in important spots. They have spiked with the Gaudreau gone and will no doubt receive a boost when he returns. The Oilers have two games in hand, against Anaheim and Minnesota, and could stretch the lead to six. Will they? The playoffs are a long way off, but we get tells every week. Edmonton is 1-1-0 this week, can they stretch it to 3-1-0? Will it be 1-3-0?

TRADE WINDS

  • Sather on making trades: “I’m on the phone every day. It’s part of the business. Everybody wants the kids. Toronto wants a young defensemen, and they’d give me practically anyone I would name, or so they say. But when I name someone, it just seems to break down. I could have (Ian) Turnbull, I guess, but I’m not sure I want him. Buffalo right now, why I could pick up the phone to Scott (Bowman) and have Jim Schoenfeld and Rick Martin. Schoenfeld’s just the kind of defenseman we need, and Martin has scored 50 goals twice, and he’s been an All-Star. But they’re what, 28 or 29? and what Scotty wants in return are (Dave) Hunter and (Paul) Coffey. I could do that, sure. We could move up about four places this year, just with that trade. But in three of four years, they’d kill me. Coffey’s going to be one of the best defensemen in this league. That’s all they want: The kids. I’m going to stick with these kids even if it means finishing last.”

THEY are the fans, and it is true. Edmonton needs a backup goalie who starts more than twice in the first 25 games, and a Pisani and a RHD for the second pairing and power play. Cost? JP? First-round pick? Drake Caggiula? If it were Bogdan Yakimov, that trade would be done.

Will Edmonton buy at the deadline? And I am not talking Jerred Smithson, I am talking real help. Can I see it? Maybe. More than this, I see a Patrick Maroon style add, someone who can help now and down the line. The only barrier? Expansion draft. Still, I don’t think PC is so invested in all of the current protected list that he would not try to upgrade.

ASSETS?

We are midway through the Top 20 prospects and if the Oilers are planning on additions, someone from the group may be heading out. Who? Ziyat Paigin? Bogdan Yakimov? Tyler Pitlick? What about draft picks?

2017 OILERS PICKS (PROJECTED)

  • First Round, No. 20
  • Second Round, No. 51 (belongs to Boston)
  • Third Round, No. 82
  • Third Round, No. 87 (arrives in Yakupov deal)
  • Fourth Round, No. 113
  • Fifth Round, No. 131 (arrives in Larsen deal)
  • Fifth Round, No. 144
  • Sixth Round, No. 175
  • Seventh Round, No. 206

I spoke to Guy Flaming yesterday, and Europe, WHL and some other spots are strong but the OHL (the OHL is prospect mecca these years) does not have the usual brilliance. Would PC trade No. 20? I don’t think he will—in fact, one suspects adding a second-round pick will be of interest to the organization.

27 times 3

On Sunday night, after the Wild game, Edmonton will have completed 27 games, or roughly 33 percent of the schedule. If Edmonton wins both weekend games, they will be in the range of the playoffs (96 points) if you project it over the final two-thirds of the year. If they lose both? They project 84 points. Last year, Edmonton posted 22 points in 27 games, that would have projected them to 66 points—and they finished with 70 on the year. The range (84 to 96) is potentially encouraging, but Edmonton badly needs to find consistency, and balance is not an organizational priority at this time. McDavid and Talbot have them here, the Nuge line needs to contribute here and right soon!

NICK ELLIS!

ellis-3

Photo by Mark Williams, all rights reserved

Nick Ellis is having a great run in Bakersfield, and putting pressure on Laurent Brossoit (who pitched a shutout last night) in terms of counting numbers and save percentage:

  • AHL No. 4 SP: Nick Ellis, .930
  • AHL No. 5 SP: Laurent Brossoit .927

The Condors have had extended periods where they couldn’t put the puck in the ocean, but the goaltending has been quality so far. I will speak to Catherine Silverman (voodoo explainer!) at 2:20 today about Ellis, and his remarkable progress from seldom used college backup to star starter to excellent AHL backup—and where he goes from here. Interview at 2:20 today, Edmonton time, on Saturday Sports Extra.

OILERS SCORERS IN NHL TOP 60 OVERALL

  • No. 1 Connor McDavid 25gp, 11-23-34
  • No. 21 Leon Draisaitl 25gp, 9-11-20
  • No. 29 Milan Lucic 25gp, 7-12-19
  • No. 52 Jordan Eberle 25gp, 7-10-17

You can go decades without four men in the top 60 scorers, so enjoy this while you can. Completely coincidental that 97s wingers have made it into this group, I am sure. The issue for Edmonton is that their next scorers have 11 points (Nuge, Maroon) and that is not a strong number. Tighten up, in the words of the great philosopher Archie Bell.

CHECKING IN ON JUSTIN SCHULTZ

Dave Molinari has an article up for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about Justin Schultz and his defensive progress. He and Ian Cole are playing third pair for the Penguins, and Schultz has a 4.4 Corsi Rel—excellent!—early in the year. Good for him, glad it is going well. He doesn’t get much power-play time though (Letang) and hopefully that increases. I mean, why bother having JS if you aren’t using him there?

TABERNAC SATURDAY

It all revolved around the HNIC game. You see, we didn’t have a game every night, in fact many times HNIC was the game of the week. My brother and I would play outside until Stampede Wrestling, beat the hell out of each other (this is me lying, he beat the hell out of me) during the Bugs Bunny Show, and then HNIC.

I remember cards and beer and cigarettes (and a cigar, my Grandpa smoked a cigar) and I would watch no matter who was playing. I was the only one in the entire family who was thrilled with an expansion team (Minnesota North Stars!), the men preferred Toronto-Montreal. Which made little sense to me, because if Montreal won they were all miserable, but I have figured it out since then.

The Oilers on Saturday night in recent seasons have been beaten soundly by my recollection, but that too shall pass. This past week, people went nuts again because the Oilers could not find a way to beat the Arizona Coyotes and their blasted defensive shell.

It will come, ladies and men. Small victories are big steps. Let’s start with a HNIC win, so at least one old man can stop his terrible habit of yelling at the TV and scaring the beJesus out of the dog. Amen.

ANA looks have-able the way they’re playing right now. Be nice to get a score and make them pay.

Very poor shift by the Nuge line.

  3. Klima's_Bucket says:

Is Kris Russell the best option to shut down Getzlaf and Perry?

  4. frjohnk says:

Russell bailed out Larsson on that two on 1 in the first few minutes but then they were on the ice for that tire fire. Not good so far for Larsson. Russell hot and cold.

Wow Drai is flying so far this game.

  6. Zelepukin says:

Man we are getting schooled down low with possession in our own zone.

Lander scores again from Beck and Laleggia.

  8. Klima's_Bucket says:

    Lowetide,

Puljujarvi pick up any points tonight?

  9. Lowetide says:

Talbot with a monster save there. Goodness.

Lowetide: Talbot with a monster save

I really hope Talbot isn’t picking anything up from The Monster.

  11. JDï™ says:

GMo – you’re in our thoughts tonight.

  12. Lowetide says:

Ethan Bear with a goal tonight, now 25gp, 10-13-23.

  13. Lowetide says:

    Corsi 5×5 after 1 is 16-16

  14. Jaxon says:

Not a bad period overall. McDavid’s line was solid, if a bit quiet. Letestu’s line put on some pressure and I thought Caggiula’s line looked really good out there. Nuge’s line didn’t look great. Not sure why. It would be nice to see them light it up. There was a time when Hall was out in the spring of 2015 when Pouliot/Nugent-Hopkins/Eberle was the top line and one of the hottest lines in the NHL for about 20 games.

  15. The Trade Guy says:

Woof that was boring. I love the panel saying that its a tight checking game. Just the style Bettman loves.

  16. Lowetide says:

McLellan really rotated his lines pretty evenly that period. EV toi

    McDavid 5:55
    Nuge 5:33
    Letestu 5:11

    Huh.

MRI = no broken bones for Nurse?

    Music?

They clog almost as well as the Yotes, and are much better on the psycho. I remain nervous. Need more red.

    Music!

  20. Centre of attention says:

Kypreous said 2 maybe 3 weeks at most for Nurses foot.

  21. Lowetide says:

Per Nick Kypreos, Darnell Nurse has a foot injury. Not broken, the Oilers hope to have him back in 2 or 3 weeks

Does that mean a sprain? That could be worse.

I missed the talk through the day, but not sure what other injury options there’d be.

  23. Pescador says:

    Lowetide:
Ethan Bear with a goal tonight, now 25gp, 10-13-23.

    Love a nice Bear

  24. JDï™ says:

jp: Does that mean a sprain?

Could be, but it depends on what happened. Blocked shot or slash wouldn’t mean a sprain, would it?

  25. Lowetide says:

Oilers 3-1 in HDSCs that period.

  26. Pescador says:

jp: Does that mean a sprain? That could be worse.

I missed the talk through the day, but not sure what other injury options there’d be.

bone bruise, high ankle, not sure what the medical terminology is for sore foot. At any rate great news

  27. JDï™ says:

Pescador: At any rate great news

Unless strep foot sets in. Because Oy-lers.

  28. jp says:

Pescador: bone bruise, high ankle, not sure what the medical terminology is for sore foot. At any rate great news

I was falling asleep the other night so don’t remember the play. Was it a blocked shot? Or potentially as turned ankle? Or unknown?

A bone bruise makes some sense (though I don’t recall other players getting a specific timeline for a bone bruise). A high ankle sprain is totally different and is a ligament issue.

  29. who says:

Like the jump that the Cags line is showing but Slepy has sure screwed up a couple of potential rushes. First he fumbled the puck and messed up a 3 on 2 and next shift he didn’t get the puck to Pitlick who would have had a breakaway. Obvious pass.

  30. Pescador says:

    Lowetide:

    Huh.

Kid line injecting some much needed speed into the line up, if they cash tonight I might wake somebody up with my celebrating

  31. Lowetide says:

Eberle has to be stronger on the puck there, or move it more quickly. I have seen that very play maybe six times this year already.

    It’s strep foot

  33. JDï™ says:

Pescador: I might wake somebody up with my celebrating

    You’re at the game then?

  34. Zelepukin says:

This Nuge – Perry line matchup is the worst. They just get completely out-muscled.

Also, please stop putting Fayne out with the McD line. Twice now he has done the Ference special and rimmed or dumped off the boards instead of looking first for the pass options.

  35. Pescador says:

Slack is a thing, if you care to cut him some. 16 or so NHL games?

  36. Réal Goudenyéu says:

The ducks know how to make the playoffs – win your division. 7-1-1 so far for them.

  37. jp says:

    Pescador: It’s strep foot

    Damn.

  38. JDï™ says:

Great work by Milan there. And the nanosecond McDavid stick lift.

  39. Lucinius says:

    Need to score here.

  41. Lucinius says:

    Yep. Powerplay back to sucking.

  42. JDï™ says:

    Caggs!!!!

  43. Lowetide says:

    Caggiula scored.

  44. Lucinius says:

There we go! Not sucking now.

  45. jp says:

    Awesome!!! #1 for Caggiula!!!

  46. Pescador says:

    Baby’s up!!!

  47. russ99 says:

Congrats on your first NHL goal, Cags!

  48. Jaxon says:

    Woohoo, Caggiula!

  49. Lowetide says:

Very nice pass by Maroon, too. Really like that player.

  50. Lucinius says:

And now some really bad plays in our own zone. Thankfully they didn’t score.

  51. Zelepukin says:

Wow that was a dumb play by Russell. Why would you fire it up the boards when no one is there and they’ve just settled it down for a change.

  52. russ99 says:

The only thing worse than our d-zone coverage this period is their shooting

  53. CrazyCoach says:

Need to wake up in our end boys,

Gee, wish the Oilers hadn’t sent down one of their best face-off guys and PKers *cough*.

  61. Lucinius says:

    Lucic going huggybear on us.

  62. JDï™ says:

Boll takes off Lucic for five.

We need George Bush in a jump suit with a Mission Accomplished banner waving in the breeze.

  63. Yak Efron says:

For Bruce Wayne, thats an even trade off.

  64. The Trade Guy says:

Why is Lucic fighting worthless league fodder like Boll? Oh well

  65. spoiler says:

Pisses me off that our 1st liner has to fight their designated puncher.

  66. Jaxon says:

Lucic is leaking pretty good. May need some stitches.

  67. russ99 says:

That was really interesting, Draisaitl acting as a screener for McDavid to give him some time without the usual muggung, they need to try that again.

  68. Lowetide says:

    Yak Efron:

    Well placed.

  69. Professor Q says:

  76. spoiler says:

Nuge with a much-needed goal… for the team and himself.

  77. JDï™ says:

Caggs is like a terrier in front of the net. Very Peca like.

  79. russ99 says:

Getting some nice looks, keep it up boys.

  80. The Trade Guy says:

Man that was a great shot by Nuge. Hope he shoots more.

  81. Lucinius says:

Benning should have aimed for the pads there, I think. Or tried to pass, considering who the other guy was. But, at least he hit the net/goalie.

  82. Professor Q says:

See, THAT’S the moment where you want to pass to an open McDavid, not shoot right at the goalie, Benning…

  83. Lowetide says:

Lander with the hatty, Brossoit the SO and now at .932SP for the season.

    Atta boy baby nuge!

  87. Lucinius says:

    Lowetide:
Lander with the hatty, Brossoit the SO and now at .932SP for the season.

Oilers need to find a way to get him able to translate his AHL offense to the NHL level. So far he’s shown it can happen (at least under certain coaches). If he could deliver some of his offense at the NHL level he would be a massive upgrade on some of the players currently in the line up.

  88. Pescador says:

Huge save by Talbot there, gotta get outta this period up 1

  89. Lowetide says:

Getzlaf and Perry are diabolical. Really.

You mean he’s shown he can do it in small sample sizes. Which is exactly the problem.

He is a career AHLer. Those guys exist. Their role or success in the AHL doesn’t always translate to the same results/responsibilities in the NHL.

  93. Lowetide says:

Good gracious the Oilers D activated stupidly. Was that Sekera?

  94. Wolfie says:

    Talbot looks sharp tonight.

  95. Lucinius says:

spoiler: You mean he’s proven he can do it in small sample sizes.Which is exactly the problem.

Well, sure, but from what I recall when he was producing in the NHL he was doing things that should lead to offense (going to the net, late trailer coming in, strong board-work). No reason that stuff shouldn’t lead to offense in a consistant manner.. except it hasn’t and I think it is because of who he tends to play with under certain coaches (and then, to a lesser degree, the systems they employ).

But, he just gives you so much utility that he’s a player you need to be able to play.. which means he needs a bit more offense.

  96. Lowetide says:

    The Ducks drive me crazy.

  97. The Trade Guy says:

That was a more entertaining period.

  106. Lowetide says:

Russell-Larsson are 3-12 against the Getzlaf line. Would you hard match that pairing against the Anaheim trio? Sekera pair is 3-6, Klefbom pair 0-2.

    Fuck you, Minsk!

  132. Wolfie says:

    There’s the Bettman Parity Bounce…

  133. JDï™ says:

    Lowetide:
    The Anaheim Ducks are diabolical.

They can fowl up any plan.

  134. Klima's_Bucket says:

    Who should have had Rakell?

  135. Jaxon says:

    No interference on Sekera?

  136. Surly says:

Perry with the veteran move to knock Sekera’s stick out of his hands. Hate that man

  137. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Klima’s_Bucket:
    Who should have had Rakell?

No one knows and that’s the problem

  138. spoiler says:

JDï™: They can fowl up any plan.

    Rape and plumage!!

  139. Gerta Rauss says:

    fuckers

  140. Lowetide says:

    Klima’s_Bucket:
    Who should have had Rakell?

Meh. It was off a stick, fluke bounce. I understand the idea of trailer but anticipating that is impossible.

  141. Wolfie says:

    Klima’s_Bucket:
    Who should have had Rakell?

Doesn’t matter. That was a bad bounce. That’s the only way the Ducks will beat Talbot the rest of the game.

  142. JDï™ says:

CBC ‘parroting’ the gentleman’s agreement rumour for the Rustle contract.

I hope that’s all it is.

  143. CrazyCoach says:

Not sure what the numbers say about Benning, but I’m willing to bet that his numbers are probably where Nurse’s were last year at this time. He’s going to be a good player, but his reads are questionable some times.

It wouldn’t be because he’s a little over his head right now would it?

  144. jzed says:

So , essentially, good veteran teams are good at cheating.

  145. JDï™ says:

    Klima’s_Bucket:
    Who should have had Rakell?

The defender who lost his stick?

  146. Wolfie says:

    That’s a God Damn hook!

  147. JDï™ says:

    Poor Kessie.

  148. Wolfie says:

I’m not a violent guy by nature but I want to cross check Kessler in the Jaw.

  149. dangilitis says:

I feel like Connor would have about 10 more assists if one of his line mates stayed by the net to collect pucks that invariably end up in front of the net

  150. JDï™ says:

    spoiler: Rape and plumage!!

    We have the Drake!

  151. jzed says:

McDavid with a don’t you dare glare or here we go again look, hard to tell

  152. Lucinius says:

It would be nice to see the Oilers get a 5v5 goal tonight.

  153. Lowetide says:

Talbot has been wonderful this game.

  154. Wolfie says:

I’m hearing lots of …. “Blocked!!! By Kris Russel!”

  155. jzed says:

    Omg rnh, move your ass!

  156. Lowetide says:

    Lucinius:
It would be nice to see the Oilers get a 5v5 goal tonight.

The Nuge goal was at even strength.

  157. spoiler says:

    JDï™: We have the Drake!

And it’s definitely not all it’s quacked up to be!

  158. Zelepukin says:

    Lowetide:
Talbot has been wonderful this game.

ANH plays a sound game. They know their strengths and possession is everything. Never really making any risky plays.

  159. Wolfie says:

Anaheim has had Carte Blanche this period.

  160. russ99 says:

Not sure if we’ve seen as many passes to nowhere in our zone all year than in this one game.

  161. jzed says:

Good veteran teams know the refs have their back

  162. Ryan says:

Lowetide: The Nuge goal was at even strength.

Yes, I had a shot of Sambuca.

  163. Wolfie says:

The whole game really… Line changes, obstruction… holy crap. I can’t be the only one seeing this.. And the Oilers are in it despite that. This team is taking steps…

  164. delooper says:

Does RNH have a leg injury? He looks sluggish.

  165. little.fiery.one says:

I don’t think we have won a single battle on the boards this period, in either end.

  166. dangilitis says:

There have been far more than 3 infractions this game. Refusing to call clear interference on McDavid, etc. is basically giving Anaheim way too much respect

  167. jzed says:

Kassian had to take to the net or at least get a rebound

  168. JDï™ says:

    delooper:
Does RNH have a leg injury? He looks sluggish.

    Vericose veins.

    Also strep foot.

  169. Wolfie says:

Fuck.. Perry clamps on to McDavid as soon as the Oilers touch the puck…

  170. Lowetide says:

Too much man with 44 seconds left. Good gracious.

  171. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Well that’s the game boys…

  172. Wolfie says:

They call that!!!! You can’t tell me the fix isn’t in.

  173. Klima's_Bucket says:

    This ice is awful.

  174. CrazyCoach says:

Coach penalty there. 7 guys on the ice is too much

  175. russ99 says:

Uh, we’re at home, refs, in case you didn’t know.

  176. Professor Q says:

I didn’t see the penalty and they didn’t show the replay…damn it. Tough to kill that off.

  177. delooper says:

Ref picks the puck out of the air on a clearing, and hands it to the ducks.

  178. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Klima’s_Bucket:
    This ice is awful.

    Yes it’s terrible

  179. Lowetide says:

Oilers get a point. Thanks, Gary!

  180. jzed says:

That’s got to be a coaching thing, I can’t believe the players would do it this much. Do we lead the league? Oh well, at least we get a point

  181. Gerta Rauss says:

    omg

That was some period of hockey and I don’t mean that in a good way

  182. Wolfie says:

Fowler is good. Carlyle might be the best thing to have happened to him.

  183. Zelepukin says:

Wow at the game Talbot put in. Some serious saves.

  184. spoiler says:

I’d bet there’ve been 10 changes this game that bad that were not called.

  185. russ99 says:

I’m almost as peeved at the refs today as the Kings Yak game, maybe Caggiula can score one in OT and slide on his knees down the ice.

  186. Klima's_Bucket says:

I thought Fowler was the dud and Lindholm was the stud.
It appears as if the Ducks think the opposite.

  187. StixMalone says:

    Klima’s_Bucket:
    This ice is awful.

Rumour has it they are bringing in someone from the NHL to help fix it….

  188. JDï™ says:

    GET A WHISTLE!

  189. Professor Q says:

    JDï™: Vericose veins.

    Also strep foot.

    VeriCorsi veins?

  190. JDï™ says:

    LEO!

  191. Surly says:

LEON!!! Screw you ANA, Perry, Kesler!!

  192. Ryan says:

    Draisatl bitches!

  193. jzed says:

    JUSTICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  194. Lowetide says:

    Leon scored.

  195. Gerta Rauss says:

    Leon

  196. delooper says:

Draisaitl is such a useful player.

  197. russ99 says:

    Drai!!!

  198. Wolfie says:

    Fucking rights boys!!!

  199. Younger Oil says:

Refs stupidly not calling an icing won us the game.

  200. JDï™ says:

    Professor Q: VeriCorsi veins?

Pfft – you b’leeve that shit?
