COMPLETE NHLE

by Lowetide

Depending on the league, we can get a reasonable idea about a newly drafted player in terms of offense. Connor McDavid’s NHLE (82gp, 20-40-63) was shy of his actual rookie NHL performance (45gp, 16-32-48) but did give us an indication we were looking at a special player. Jesse Puljujarvi’s NHLE (82gp, 6-7-13) was so low I didn’t trust it. Why? Well, his time-on-ice in the Sm-Liiga lagged behind what we might expect for a feature NHL player, and the Sm-Liiga has suffered greatly in recent seasons (in terms of quality). There was a lot about JPs year that gave his offense an air of mystery. As he plays his 12th AHL game tonight, are we getting closer to getting his offensive potential surrounded? Perhaps. Here are the latest NHLE’s from the Oilers prospect arsenal.

COMPLETE NHLE’S OILERS FORWARDS (per 82gp)

  1. R Anton Slepyshev 14-34-48. He played just nine games, but has clearly earned a full NHL shot.
  2. LC Jujhar Khaira 14-19-33. He has stepped up, suspect he is a regular next season.
  3. RC Tyler Vesel 13-19-32. I don’t know enough about him to project him into the future.
  4. R Jesse Puljujarvi 8-20-28. He is shy offensively, but it is early. Needs a quality center.
  5. L Tyler Benson 7-21-28. Promising season before injury. He is still not in lineup.
  6. RC Aapeli Rasanen 4-14-18. Solid year, also injured since the WJs.
  7. L Aidan Muir 3-15-18. Just back from injury, showing a pulse.
  8. L Joey Laleggia 10-6-16. Move to LW has helped his career, still a distant bell.
  9. LC Bogdan Yakimov 4-11-15. His jump to Russia was ill-timed.
  10. RC Zach Pochiro 2-9-11. Unlikely to return.
  11. R Patrick Russell 3-6-9. The numbers do not favor him.
  12. R Greg Chase 2-6-8. He is not getting the at-bats, suspect the organization has made their decision.
  13. RC Kyle Platzer 1-7-8. Possibly a little more promising than Chase’s fate, but he needs a break.
  14. L Graham McPhee 1-6-7. Not showing much yet, but freshman college forwards don’t get TOI push.
  15. LC Jere Sallinen 4-2-6. This was not a successful coupling.
  16. RC Henrik Samuelsson 3-2-5. New man gets a fresh start.
  17. L Braden Christoffer 1-3-4. Not trending well.
  18. L Evan Campbell 1-3-4. NCAA numbers suggest he will not be signed.

COMPLETE NHLE’S OILERS DEFENSEMEN (per 82gp)

  1. LD Jordan Oesterle 5-24-29. His offense is flourishing sans Brad Hunt.
  2. LD Caleb Jones 3-18-21. On track and ready to enter pro. Impressive season.
  3. RD Ethan Bear 8-12-20. Marching along beside Jones, a nice duo for pro next year.
  4. LD Griffin Reinhart 7-9-16. Fine play since returning from injury, remains an expansion possibility.
  5. LD Ziyat Paigin 5-11-16. Will the Oilers sign him? Big, strong, defensive, plus the howitzer.
  6. LD David Musil 2-9-11. The fifth Beatle.
  7. RD Filip Berglund 0-9-9. Playing 10 minutes a night, so, like Puljujarvi last year, this number may be shy.
  8. LD Matthew Cairns 1-8-9. Impressive run in the BCHL after nothing shaking in the USHL.
  9. LD Ben Betker 2-7-9. He has shown well this year.
  10. LD Dillon Simpson 2-6-8. Defensive defender not about the boxcars.
  11. LD William Lagesson 2-6-8. Another defender available for signing.
  12. RD John Marino 1-4-5. He isn’t a feature player, not surprising (he is a freshman).
  13. LD Markus Niemelainen 1-3-4. Boxcars off the tracks.
  14. RD Vincent Desharnais 3-0-3. College defender is not about the offense.

NOTES

  • I used Rob Vollman’s NHLE guidelines for this article.
  • Rob’s NHLE has a special wrinkle for younger AHL players (22 and under) and the numbers are reflected above.

CONDORS LINEUP FOR TONIGHT

  • Ryan Hamilton—Anton Lander—Taylor Beck
  • Iiro Pakarinen—Jere Sallinen—Jesse Puljujarvi
  • Joey Laleggia—Josh Currie—Patrick Russell
  • Scott Allen—Henrik Samuelsson—Braden Christoffer
  • Griffin Reinhart—Mark Fayne
  • Jordan Oesterle—David Musil
  • Mark Fraser—Dillon Simpson
  • Nick Ellis (Jonas Gustavsson)
  • Source

  • Why is Lander on a line with Taylor Beck? Puljujarvi is only 11 games into his AHL season, and has not yet played with a top-flight center.
  • JP has been playing often with Jere Sallinen (and will be with him again tonight), and some with with Josh Currie. I am hopeful he gets some time with Anton Lander at some point.
  • The Condors have shown a tendency to use Taylor Beck as their top RW, and Puljujarvi has been in a support role since he arrived.
  • There is no way for us to know the reasoning behind this decision early in his time with the team. but Puljujarvi should be close to a feature role after 11 games in Bakersfield.
  • I will track the game in the comments section (usually a few of us chime in about it).
  • Thanks for reading!

Truth

russ99:
IMO, They’re deploying Jesse on that line to get him to drive his own offense.

I believe there is some truth to this as well. By draft pedigree he should be one of, if not the best, player on the team. This shouldn’t equal the Yakupov drama, “if only he played with a legitimate center.” He needs to be the go-to player on whatever line he plays on.

Also, a lot of it is perspective. If the lines were written as shown below we’d ask why Lander is not getting a push:

Iiro Pakarinen—Jere Sallinen—Jesse Puljujarvi
Ryan Hamilton—Anton Lander—Taylor Beck
Joey Laleggia—Josh Currie—Patrick Russell
Scott Allen—Henrik Samuelsson—Braden Christoffer

IMO, as long as JP finishes each game as one of the top 3 F in TOI I think they are doing the right thing. If he’s not getting those minutes they need to re-assess what the organization’s role is in Bakersfield.

With Lander and Beck or Hamilton, he’ll get more help.

So far it’s working. More goals please… 🙂

ahhh, I missed the sarcasm in your questions to LT.

I hear a lot of questions like that from people who are being serious though, so can you really blame me? 😛

I would keep Nuge forever and ever.

Just throwing it out there what happens if PC trades both Davidson and Griff for a forward and picks. How would that shake the expansion tree. Just saying. Talking up Griff publically as well as saying Davidson could be traded. Something to think about.

jfry,

Solid apple.

i don’t mind having the big line in the ahl to shelter kids coming in.

i wish pj played more minutes with a better center.

i’m happy he’s in a sheltered role all the same. the ahl is still a quality league. let the landers and the becks of the world deal with the landers and becks of the world.

thanks for the updates tonight.

I’ll say it again, but playing JP in a feature role in the ahl prolly isn’t the safest idea for a guy who turns 19 in may and has a gangly ass body still. That and the Finnish translation as people mentioned.

I think second/third line min with top powerplay is perfect.

hunter1909,

I actually think Eberle gets plenty of chances nowadays. He went threw a difficult stretch but IMO last few weeks he’s been creating more. We would notice the chances more if he was cashing because eventually mentioning chances gets old. Eberle is definitely not a strong player on the boards agreed.

RNH IMO needs wingers who can finish. He’s usually been stuck with guys who are slumping on his wings this season. Nuge is a playmaker, and if his wingers aren’t finishing the points won’t come.

Also, another thing:

We can talk negatively about Nuge & Ebs and possibly yell about trading them but we have to understand that if they were gone there would be two massive holes in the roster. You want to upgrade on them and possibly find more cost effective options? Sure. Get rid of them.

But until you can find better, cheaper options you’re stuck with them. It falls on the coach to find the right line combos and get the most from the players. Nuge with Leon has been mentioned. We wait.

hunter1909

Lowetide,

Wtf is the matter with Eberle? He used to skate and get all kinds of chances. Now he floats and looks weak.

Wtf is with RNH? he used to have all kinds of creativity. This season he might as well be named Todd Marchant.

Puljujarvi to Lander for the power play goal. Condors within one late.

Puljujarvi with Currie now.

To be honest Currie is probably a better AHLer than Sallinen so i like this move.

10. With 11 goals and 35 points, Radim Vrbata is closing in on a $500,000 bonus for 20 goals and/or 40 points. There is also the possibility of up to $1.25M in playoff winnings. CBA rules don’t allow Arizona to promise to pay half of anything that could be accomplished after he is traded. That complicates his situation for teams tight to the cap.

With this in play, perhaps chiarelli can make it work….I believe oilers have the cap room for the bonus, right?

Puljujarvi strips a guy in the NZ, goes in alone and rips a backhander past Gulls goalie. (Jonas Enroth!!!)

Flemming said on CHED today that “those three have chemistry” well I seriously doubt how good of a coach he is because I don’t think those 3 have played well at all.

Put Puljujarvi with Beck and Lander. It’s the right thing to do.

I think that playing him with Beck and Lander gives them a better chance to win.

I’m not sure that Puljujarvi’s english is where it needs to be to play with them, and I think Fleming’s Finnish isn’t likely strong enough to teach.

Is Puljujarvi there to win, or learn?

Lowetide:
Condors get their second shot on net. What a dreadful period. San Diego looks good, though. 2-0 them.

They looked better than the Roadrunners when they came to town the other week. Defensively sound, Tucson was higher in the standings but San Deigo looked like the more disciplined team.

Centre of attention

I think Puljujarvi has probably played less than 4 minutes total this period.

Hardly touches the puck.

Sallinen can hardly play at the AHL level. Pakarinen is just returning from knee injury.

From the last thread, I laid out what I expect for the expansion draft. They’re not strong enough on the wings with exposed young talent to go 7-3-1.

I know it won’t be popular around here, but 2.4 years younger, better offense in the same leagues at the same age, and Chiarelli’s favorite attribute in size, and I won’t be shocked when he doubles down on his original bet.

I think that the Oiler’s have picked Reinhart as the keeper.

Pouzar

Hard landing for the Kings. F*** em.

Interesting things going on in STL.

PRV scores his second goal and is playing on a line with Schwartz and Berglund, so a feature role.

Hitch getting the pipe might salvage PRV’s career.Hope so, always cheered for him and thought he got a raw deal here (worse players playing ahead of him) and in STL (same)

Yak, however is scratched.

In fact, they have Barbashev up with the big club and he’s getting 4th line duty with Upshall and Reaves.

Also,

D-pairs are:

Bouwmeester-Pietrangelo (natch)
Edmundson – Parayko
Bortozzo – Shattenkirk

Gunnarsson – scratched

They ran Shatts in 3rd pair last playoffs as well.

I’m pretty sure they’ll cash him before the deadline.

The PRV goal was a beauty, too. The kind we all envisioned we’d see for the next 10 years. Happy for him – hope he finally establishes himself.

Davidson connected to the Avalanche in Elliottes 30 thoughts. Makes sense. *Edit* Damn LT beat me to it because I was busy DMing him about the article. Haha.

Iggy or Colborne don’t do it for me in a Davidson trade. It does kind of seem that there are more teams interested. I wonder what ends up shaking out.

The Maroon trade came out of nowhere, so maybe the guy that comes in isn’t somebody we have been talking about.
