PS G1 AND G2 2017-18: OILERS VS. FLAMES

by Lowetide

“Well,” said Pooh, “what I like best…….,” and then he had to stop and think. Because although eating honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn’t know what it was called.” A. A. Milne

I tolerate summer, that’s the truth. Spring is far better, full of hope and new growth and the long lost warmth of the sun. Fall is my favorite season, with the colors of the river valley and the brisk air a welcome reminder of the best season of all: Hockey season. We are here. Welcome back, friend.

OILERS IN EDMONTON ROSTER TONIGHT

  • Patrick Maroon—Connor McDavid—Ryan Strome. Big opportunity, big pressure.
  • Joey Laleggia—Ryan Nugent-Hopkins—Jesse Puljujarvi. Giant push for two young wingers.
  • Iiro Pakarinen—Mark Letestu—Zack Kassian. Potential 4line.
  • Ryan Hamilton—Josh Currie/Grayson Downing—Patrick Russell. AHL 2line?
  • Darnell Nurse—Eric Gryba. Opening night third pair.
  • Caleb Jones—Ethan BearA curious opening night pair, there is opportunity here.
  • William Lagesson—Mark Fayne. Fascinating pair, Fayne could get some NHL games this year.
  • Cam Talbot (Edward Pasquale). Talbot looks to repeat a brilliant season.

OILERS IN CALGARY ROSTER TONIGHT

  • Milan Lucic—Leon Draisaitl—Drake Caggiula. Giant chance for Caggiula.
  • Jujhar Khaira—Chris Kelly—Kailer Yamamoto. A nice push for all three men.
  • Mitch Callahan—Brad Malone—Ty Rattie. Rattie starts here. Where is he opening night?
  • Evan Polei/Braden Christoffer—Joe Gambardella—Greg Chase. Let ’em know you’re there!
  • Oscar Klefbom—Adam Larsson. Opening night first pair.
  • Yohann Auvitu—Dillon SimpsonA nice showcase game for both men.
  • Keegan Lowe—Ziyat Paigin. I am curious as to why this isn’t the second pair in Edmonton.
  • Laurent Brossoit (Nick Ellis). This is Brossoit’s time, Ellis is on deck.

Players getting a push tonight that might seem out of time include Joey Laleggia, Caleb Jones, Ethan Bear, Dillon Simpson. Now, that could be due to injuries or rest for more established players (Jussi Jokinen, Matt Benning) heading into the exhibition season. If you see something fabulous from one of these four men, that’s a very good arrow.

TRADE TALK

The Oilers are not balanced and that brings the idea of a training camp deal into play. Players getting a push are being evaluated, but that works both ways. No idea what it would look like but something to keep in mind. I’m looking for Jesse Puljujarvi to have a good night and would love to see any of the depth defensemen step up. You know, Caleb Jones is in an NHL pre-season game and in a feature role. Sometimes magic.

I’ve got my eye on Joey L. and that entire line in Edmonton tonight.

Its a very shitty flames lineup but better competition that the internal scrimmages.

Can Joey L. turn in to a producing NHL player? I still think its a long shot but it would be absolutely huge for this organization to find a value contract out of nowhere almost.

Also have my ye on Strome and Auvitu.

OriginalPouzar

Judging by the reports from early in camp and the lineups tonight, does it seem that Joey L. might be ahead of Rattie in the battle for the skilled forward injury replacement?

Why is NHL preseason so long? Surely they could pick the last two roster spots in less than a month

It has been a long time since the Oilers “B” team in split game has actually been something exciting to watch. Depth is fun!

Go Oilers.

Crazy prediction is that Doughty is in Oiler silks at the trade deadline. Woot! Woot! alternatively he is traded to the Leafs (Boo!) but either way he doesn’t finish the season in La La Land.

Would be quite odd to take on a big contract with term at the deadline.

Guess we are moving Drai in the off-season?

HOCKEYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!

That’s all.

Oh, wait.
Also:

GOILERS!!!!

Oh yeah, and… Perfect time to say:
Thank you, thank you, thank you LT. Your commitment to this place is legitimately heartwarming. Your selfless commitment to community building is… well, honestly the stuff that leaving a legacy with one’s life’s work is made of. You are a phenomenal writer and an even better human being. Even though I have never had the opportunity to meet you in person, I am so grateful we have had the chance to share a love of the Oilers. My contributions are minimal, but… just so thankful I have a ‘family’ around something I spend too much time caring about! 🙂

Did I mention… HOCKEYYYY!!!!!!

Cheers, all!

I think I’m going to focus on the game in Edmonton today as opposed to trying to watch both and not really being able to asses anybody (made tougher by less-known players – don’t know their numbers in some cases, don’t know what they look like on the ice, etc.).

I’m very interested to see the Laleggia/Nuge/JP line, I do want to see Strome play.

I would be excited for Nurse/Gryba and their 1st pairing minutes but those won’t tell too much against a nothing lineup.

Strategies for two games at the same time?

geowal

Quite unusual (but welcome) that they’ve sent the 2nd line and a top D pairing, instead of sending only the bottom end down, and vice versa

OriginalPouzar

Should be interesting to see Yamamoto on the PP with Drai, Lucic and Klef.

We had 400 versions of ‘Autumn Leaves’ at our house when I was a kid.

Much in the same way that song has been burned into your soul, the Chopin scene from Bergman’s Autumn Sonata is burned into mine:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxA94uSQ-t0

I’ve watched this scene countless times. I’m not a huge fan of Bergman, other than The Seventh Seal—he’s plenty intense but the issues he addresses are usually too much in the small. Still, he has a cinematic mind and can put together individual scenes that are absolutely astounding.

This is one such scene. Watch as the daughter plays the piece expressing the damage, perversion, and sly smarts of her character. Her mother corrects her and then plays the piece herself, proceeding to do everything she says not to.

It scrambles the soul of her daughter, and nearly mine too.

OriginalPouzar,

Edmonton game on computer, Calgary game on phone. Mostly paying attention to Edmonton game.

It’s an ADD dream

PunjabiOil

What an opening two paragraphs.

That Pooh line is fantastic

oilinthepeg

Oh, good. Elliot is still the brains of the operation for HNIC. They were just talking about the Lupul thing. Elliot always makes so much sense, and unfortunately for Kyp, the contrast hurts! Ha!

HOCKKKKKEYYYYYY!!!!!

Yup, I’ll have the game in Edmonton on my wife’s laptop, the game in Calgary on the ipad and MNF on my lap top.

$7 million AAV for 1.5 more years? I wouldn’t consider that too bad nor long term. And plus it would ease the signing of him in 2019.

Big +1.

Let the games begin looking forward to the season although I am having a hard time trying to control my excitement. This season could be the one it has that feel anyways we shall see. I think Joey Leggs will be a surprise we shall find out tonight

Do we really think they’re going to call this stuff a few months into the season?

Nailer Yakumoto

Is this the beginning of McDavid getting the veteran calls??
