PS G4 2017-18: CANUCKS AT OILERS

by Lowetide

The Edmonton Oilers play their fourth pre-season game tonight, against the Vancouver Canucks. The team from the left coast is bringing a group that barely qualifies as an NHL group, while the home team is giving three lines and two pairings worth of hopefuls a chance to shine. For fans, it’s an opportunity to see who will step up.

LIKELY LINEUP

  • The top line should rain down blows upon the Canucks tonight.
  • Iiro Pakarinen has the best chance of winning an NHL job among the men on the second line. Chris Kelly’s performance tonight probably needs to be impressive. Kailer Yamamoto remains a long shot but the fact he is here one week after the big games started is a very good arrow.
  • The third line includes three men who are unlikely to make the opening night lineup but could be recalls during the year. You could say the same thing about Mitch Callahan on the fourth line.
  • Yohann Auvitu has a chance to make this team, not sure it’s secure yet. Mark Fayne and Keegan Lowe are possible recalls during the year, Ryan Mantha’s presence in the lineup is a major tell in my opinion.

ANTON SLEPYSHEV

Anton Slepyshev is at “80 percent” according to Jason Gregor’s tweet and that should mean we’ll see him in the coming week. We’re now at a point where the battle for two spots (2R and 3R) comes down to four men: Drake Caggiula, Jesse Puljujarvi, Anton Slepyshev and Kailer Yamamoto. There are myriad possibilities of course, but the easiest route has Kailer Yamamoto heading back to junior and Jesse Puljujarvi heading to Bakersfield. Is that the best route? We wait.

Kaiker has done everything he can up to this point.I know WIN had a nice lineup but it was still early in preseason.

Things will start to get interesting tonight or after the weekend.

Can Kailer keep it up?

Although he did well last night, all it means is he’d probably dominate the AHL if he had Elite players like Drai to take the tough D minutes.

Grain of salt.

With that said, he looked great last night and there is not much more he can do to this point.

At the same time, some D-man I’ve never heard of has 5 points in the last two games for Van.

Professor Q

russ99,

There was only a short period of Home Whites.

It was always Home Colours and then had a short transition period, and then switched back.

OriginalPouzar

I look for Jesse Puljijarvi to have a very nice game tonight.

russ99

Kailer is pretty close to getting his 9 games.

Don’t especially like it, considering our recent and not so recent past with rushing first round picks, but if a player earns it, he earns it.

If it were just offense, I’d be less inclined. But he plays a pretty solid game without the puck too.

My only concern is what happens when we play a nasty heavy cheaty team, and he has to play a vicious board battle game. I’m not sure yet if he has Pat Kane’s evasiveness when other teams are trying to hit him to stop him, and the size and nastiness of players running with that opposition strategy are way different than in juniors.

Even though it will stop on opening night, I really love seeing the Oilers in home whites again, as it should be. Change that back and go back to the old division names and I’d be a happy hockey fan.

Brock Otten picked Samorukov as his breakout player in Guelph possibly putting up 40 points.

Jethro Tull: Sure thing. It goes great with any kind of bbq meat. Smoked brisket in particular.

I was thinking on top of potato pie… sometimes I think my parents lived through the Depression.

Professor Q,

Yam Fries?

Professor Q

The Original JDî:
Yammy it is!

Hockey Player Nicknames are so uncivilized.

JD_Wry

Yammer would also be acceptable.

Professor Q

The Original JDî: It’s a stretch, but with a little KY it fits.

Impressive!

hunter1909,

Like I said; it’d have to be earned. So far he’s working hard to earn his 9 games. If he gets those he’d have to continue to perform at a high level to get beyond that.

I’m a believer that you never send a guy back just because you can. If they earn the right to play in the NHL through good play then so be it.

That said, so far I don’t think he’s earned it. He’s close to earning a shot at 9 games — depending on Sleppy’s health.

Imo, so far he’s out-playing Caggs.

Professor Q: Kail Chips doesn’t really work

It’s a stretch, but with a little KY it fits.

Kail Chips (ode to Eakins and Ference)

Mine for him was always Frodomoto.

Kail Chips doesn’t really work as that would be “Kyle Chips”.

The Original JDî,

It’s gotta be “Jelly”

Slick.

hunter1909: With respect, this is merely another rookie dazzling the opening few days of a very long season.

Rookie Sam Gagner “blew the doors” off some dopey tournament that guaranteed him a 50 point per season career. MP-S got a hat trick during an exhibition game that had me thinking he was going to score 400+ goals.

Send the rookie back to wherever is the best place to make him grow to at least 160 pounds before condemning him to Gilbert Brule type injury risk. Keeps his ELC in place, instead of “burning” years.

I agree with you. As the season progress, every team starts to play a tighter game. It may look easy now but no way is the game the same in the new year.

In my head, I always hear the “hello moto” Motorola adds when I hear “Yamamoto”.

This should be what they play when he scores at home:

Lucinius:
I have zero issues with Yamamoto staying with the team all season; so long as it is earned. Realistically, however, anything more than 9 games doesn’t seem likely. He is making his push for it, too.

I have heard a lot of nick names for kailer Yamamoto.

I think I will go with Yoda.

Small, wise , and can really wield his light saber.

iatingbut god forbid you’ve got the radio cranked when he says “THE OILERS RADIO NETWORK!!!!!”

its infuriating.
Agree!! Very infuriating. Really, a childish way to present.

Pouzar

Professor Q: Plus, if he marinates for one-to-two more years

Blasphemy!

OriginalPouzar

Skinner stopped 37 of 39 shots in a 6-2 win. Nice start.

The only issue is it means someone else sits. And will then need some time to get up to game speed. We need to win hockey games out of the gate.

If the correct course of action is to give him another year to mature, send him down before the season starts. No matter how well he plays.

Jethro Tull

Munny:
Jethro Tull,

Nice! I don’t have enough children to mortgage off for lamb here…

Would like your cabbage recipe some time…

Sure thing. It goes great with any kind of bbq meat. Smoked brisket in particular.

Does not sound like I am missing much. More chatter about chips and commentators than the game. First time I have ever been wondering where Original Pouzar is.

Plus, if he marinates for one-to-two more years before hitting Edmonton up full-time, we could have our Calder Trophy winner, finally!

Clay

So Yamamoto…

He’s making LT look like even more of a soothsayer…

“I tells ya youngins, that Marc Antoine Yamamoto has a non-zero chance of making the team this fall. Mark my words, creek don’t rise and such.”

With many here, I prefer Bob’s PbP over Jack’s.I think anyone who grew up listening to Mr. Phillips call games would agree. If I have the game on in the background, I want to know when a goal is scored. There was no mistaking it with Phillips, and Bob’s the same way. With Jack, he’s so nonchalant with the goal calls that you’ll miss it if you’re not paying close attention.

Why is everyone so afraid that Yamo could get a9 game regular season trial? Kid has earned it there’s no denying that. It’s not like they would be giving him unmerited NHL time. He has impressed against all types of lineups so far

To be fair, I am perfectly fine with the 9 game stint. I meant I was worried he’d stay on for longer than that. Contract and future planning-wise, more so. I know he’s earned it and is showing he can play well, but one more year wouldn’t hurt.

I do still hope Chia signs Jagr.

Dino

Tonight against vancouvers C-team Yamo severly outplayed Caggiula

kgo: Nobody on the bench gets deflated when your goalie lets in a breakaway

Not arguing that point exactly, but everybody on the bench gets into it when your goalie stops a breakaway.

It’s early, I think LB will get better.

Jethro Tull

Munny:
Jethro Tull,

That’s not bad. I wouldn’t mind some proper pickled cabbage and lamb soups/gravies.

I make my own, both red cabbage and lamb. There’s an English lady up here who sells good lamb.

striatic: and Caggiula is Italian ..

I’m confident that Slepy won’t try to work his way onto that line.

The Original JDî,

I’m biased but wish he did all the CHED games.

Professor Q,

touche, but his job isn’t to stop the breakaway, it’s to stop the long range un-screened back-breakers.

I’m really enjoying his PbP style.
