The Streets of Bakersfield

Anticipation. It is such a wonderful feeling, but stretched over many days that rush becomes strained, almost anticlimactic. I think we’re probably in that spot now, today.

We can never know about the days to come
But we think about them anyway
And I wonder if I’m really with you now
Or just chasin’ after some finer day
Anticipation, anticipation
Is makin’ me late
Is keepin’ me waitin’

We’re just over 24 hours aways from the start of the Edmonton Oilers season, less than 12 hours from the beginning of the Bakersfield Condors 2018-19 kickoff game. For all intents and purposes, this weekend is the beginning of the season for Oilers fans. The NHL and AHL teams missed the postseason a year ago, hopes and prayers for better days ahead.

THE ATHLETIC!

The Athletic Edmonton is going to bring it all season long. Proud to be part of a lineup that is ready to cover the coming year. Outstanding coverage from a large group, including Daniel Nugent-Bowman and Jonathan Willis, Lowetide, Minnia Feng and Pat McLean. If you haven’t subscribed yet, now’s your chance. Special offer is here, less than $3 a month!

  • New Daniel Nugent-Bowman: After the death of his father, Sweden trip holds special significance for Adam Larsson, and one of his opponents.
  • New Lowetide: Orange, white and blue October: In 1979, the Oilers rocked the NHL.
  • New Daniel Nugent-Bowman: Why the Nuge-McDavid-Rattie line has been so successful.
  • Lowetide: The 2018-19 Oilers are in a period of transition.
  • Jonathan Willis: How worried should the Oilers be about the preseason struggles of Milan Lucic and Leon Draisaitl?
  • Jonathan Willis: Oilers bet on Ty Rattie paying off and other lessons learned from training camp.
  • Lowetide: A transaction flurry as Oilers finalize 2018-19 roster
  • Daniel Nugent-Bowman: Leon’s time to shine. This is an amazing piece, exceptional.
  • Lowetide: Oilers waive Aberg, release Jerabek and stand at 25.
  • Lowetide: Oilers prospects Berglund, Maksimov off to fine starts
  • Lowetide: Is this the year an Edmonton Oilers player wins the Calder Trophy?

OILERS LINES AND PAIRINGS

  • Ryan Nugent-Hopkins—Connor McDavid—Ty Rattie
  • Milan Lucic—Leon Draisaitl—Kailer Yamamoto
  • Jujhar Khaira—Ryan Strome—Jesse Puljujarvi
  • Tobias Rieder—Kyle Brodziak—Zack Kassian
  • Drake Caggiula—Alex Chiasson
  • Oscar Klefbom—Adam Larsson
  • Darnell Nurse—Matt Benning
  • Kris Russell—Evan Bouchard
  • Jason Garrison—Ethan Bear
  • Cam Talbot (Mikko Koskinen)

A couple of changes here, as Khaira moves to the third line and Bouchard replaces Bear on the third pairing. That is perhaps a clue in regard to the opening lineup but we’ll know in due time. Coach Todd McLellan gave an informative media avail (here) and his comments about Yamamoto and Puljujarvi are especially (in my opinion) telling. Lineups by Bob.

CONDORS STARTING ROSTER

Oilers legit prospects (Benson, Marody, Jones, Lagesson) should all play something close to a feature role all season. I’m not sure who will get the goalie starts, it’s going to be a difficult depth chart for the two new pro backstops to climb. My under the radar hopeful is Joe Gambardella, and Kevin Gravel outplayed a few defensemen during main camp in my opinion.

CONDORS NHL PRESEASON SCORING

  1. Tyler Benson 2, 0-3-3 (28:16)
  2. Patrick Russell 1, 2-0-2 (13:00)
  3. Kevin Gravel 2, 0-2-2 (34:12)
  4. Cooper Marody 3, 0-1-1 (36:09)
  5. Caleb Jones 1, 1-0-1 (20:21)
  6. Joe Gambardella 1, 0-1-1 (14:10)
  7. Brad Malone 2, 0-0-0 (22:03)
  8. Keegan Lowe 1, 0-0-0 (15:40)
  9. Josh Currie 1, 0-0-0 (16:01)
  10. Logan Day 1, 0-0-0 (20:18)
  11. Ryan Stanton 1, 0-0-0 (17:30)
  12. William Lagesson 1, 0-0-0 (15:19)
  13. Tyler Vesel 1, 0-0-0 (10:16)
  14. Cameron Hebig 1, 0-0-0 (9:46)
  15. Evan Polei 1, 0-0-0 (8:48)

    Condors score shorthanded 2-0

You guys using AHLTV and notice there’s no special teams time remaining display?

  2. buffalobill says:

Hunter I will take 107 points and 21 goals, thank you

  3. Lowetide says:

3-0, Marody to Jones and a great shot don’t know if it hit anything.

  4. Wilde says:

Jones looking like he’s going to have a monster year

  5. pts2pndr says:

    vinotintazo:
Call me crazy but I love having one of Kassian, Nurse or Lucic on the Ice at all times to protect our Players, with all the Crazy things happening on Ice… Wilson, Marchand, Gudbranson.

    Edit: forgot about Khaira

    And Nurse!😉

  6. Lowetide says:

Benson scores, another power play goal. 4-0.

  7. Wilde says:

McFarland appears to be a hockey player

    Good pickup

  8. OriginalPouzar says:

Whoa, I take the dog for a walk and miss two condors goals and then get back just in time to see Benson score the 4-0 goal on a rebound of a Logan Day point shot on the PP – Malone with the secondary assist.

Patrick Russell and Jones with PP goal with the 2nd and 3rd goals.

  9. Lowetide says:

5-0 now, might have been Hebig or someone in front. I believe that is the first even strength goal.

  10. Wilde says:

    well this is going well

  11. Lowetide says:

Nope. It was PP, too. FOUR PP and a shortie. Lordy.

  12. jp says:

    Woodguy v2.0:
    Bag of Pucks,

Remember that it was during the first 10 games of McDavid’s career that they actually played together.

They played a total of 75 minutes together and got 58% of the shot share (83-63) and 60% of the goal share (3-2)

So what you’re saying is that 15-16 Taylor Hall was 17-18 Milan Lucic?

    Goal share wise at least.

  13. OriginalPouzar says:

Condors with their 4th PP goal – Callahan deflects a Currie shot. Hebig with the 2nd assist

    5-0

  14. Wilde says:

power-play savant Jay Woodcroft is on it again

  15. Lowetide says:

Cooper Marody is such a nice player.

  16. Lowetide says:

Callahan scores, his second of the game. I believe THAT is an even-strength marker.

  17. godot10 says:

    Lowetide:
Nope. It was PP, too. FOUR PP and a shortie. Lordy.

So #ThoroughlyMediocreCoach was the problem with the PP and not #BoyWondercroft! Who knew?

  18. flyfish1168 says:

    Lowetide:
Nope. It was PP, too. FOUR PP and a shortie. Lordy.

What setup are the Condors using?

  19. OriginalPouzar says:

Callahan with his 2nd makes it 6-0.

The first one on Gillies – Parsons pulled after 5.

  20. Wilde says:

I wonder if Mitch Callahan rebounds to his regular ppg this year?

  21. Wilde says:

flyfish1168: What setup are the Condors using?

Jones at the point and Marody running it off the half wall

  22. OriginalPouzar says:

Another great thing about Parsons getting the yank tonight is its just mere hours after one of my partners, an extremely knowledgeable and engaged flames fan, advised that he is convinced Parson will be a stud starting tender in the NHL.

  23. Wilde says:

my friends, it appears we are witnessing the ascent of Jay Woodcroft

  24. OriginalPouzar says:

Gravel’s shot tipped by Joe G. and its 7-0.

  25. OriginalPouzar says:

    Wilde:
my friends, it appears we are witnessing the ascent of Jay Woodcroft

    Has he ridden enough buses????

  26. Wilde says:

OriginalPouzar: Has he ridden enough buses????

honestly, if he gets more than league average 5v5 GF out of this forward group I’ll be extremely impressed

I’ve been critical of the “hire” based on his NHL track record of being on teams that underperformed their talent in that area

  27. Wilde says:

I should clarify, I consider the Bakersfield F group to be well below average (because they don’t sign scorers), not that I consider average to be an achievement for JW in general.

  28. Pescador says:

OriginalPouzar: Has he ridden enough buses????

    Hehe,
More then 1 poster claimed he didn’t have the chops for the AHL

  29. flyfish1168 says:

Wilde: Jones at the point and Marody running it off the half wall

So are they running 5 lefties?

  30. digger50 says:

    Mr Hunter

Please put me down for 101 points for the Oil

And 21 goals for the Yak

    Fingers crossed

  31. OriginalPouzar says:

flyfish1168: So are they running 5 lefties?

I thing Logan Day, a rightie, was on PP1.

  32. OriginalPouzar says:

SH breakaway goal for Brad Malone – he’s got 4 points.

    Willie Lagesson with the assist.

  33. Wilde says:

flyfish1168: So are they running 5 lefties?

    no

  34. OriginalPouzar says:

The perfect night is over – Montoya beat on a shot from the circles.

  35. Pescador says:

    digger50:
    Mr Hunter

Please put me down for 101 points for the Oil

And 21 goals for the Yak

    What about Rattie?

  36. OriginalPouzar says:

Don’t forget the 11am start tomorrow everyone.

    Go Oilers!

  37. Faustkarz says:

99 points, 16 goals for yak for me hunter

  38. digger50 says:

    Pescador: What about Rattie?

You got me here, what did I miss? Rattie is the tie breaker tie breaker?

Rattie has a career high of 44 points

  39. slopitch says:

At this time tomorrow around 10:30am, I will crack a beer, put on some wings and get ready for the game.

    Go oilers! Clap clap

  40. N64 says:

digger50: You got me here, what did I miss? Rattie is the tie breaker tie breaker?

Rattie has a career high of 44 points

I think we were also supposed to predict Benson’s NHL games. The Ty Ty breaker.

  41. hunter1909 says:

    Pescador: What about Rattie?

Rattie appears to be running their own independent program.

DeathMarch™ is offering nothing concerning Rattie at this time.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

  42. vinotintazo says:

    pts2pndr: And Nurse!

    Hes there

  43. Bismarck says:

    Hunter:

    98 for the Oil.

    17 for YakCity.

    Goilers!!

  44. Simba says:

    hunter1909,

Hunter, Please put me down for 88 points and 20 goals. Not to be a pessimist but I just don’t see enough depth in goalie and D needed to keep up with the Jones’s this year…

  45. Krid says:

    hunter1909,

Thanks for doing this hunter. I’ll take 25 goals and 20 assists for Rattie.

  46. digger50 says:

    Bouchard making his debut tonight.

I think it should be Bear based on a defensive game they made less high end mistakes than the 18 year old as camp went on but I am excited to see Bouchard.

Bear was also a bigger PP weapon during camp.

  55. OriginalPouzar says:

    Lineup as expected:

Oilers starting lineup vs NJ in 🇸🇪:

    RNH-McDavid-Rattie
    Lucic-Draisaitl-Yamamoto
    Khaira-Strome-Puljujarvi
    Rieder-Brodziak-Kassian

    Klefbom-Larsson
    Nurse-Benning
Russell-Bouchard (NHL debut) or Bear assigned to AHL (he is only option for players not on lineup).

    Talbot

Someone needs to go on IR (Drake) or

  56. v4ance says:

    For Hunter’s contest:

    Oilers: 98 points

jp: So what you’re saying is that 15-16 Taylor Hall was 17-18 Milan Lucic?

    Goal share wise at least.

    Not quite.

In 15/16 McDavid was 60% with Hall and 50% away so Hall was a 10% boost

In 17/18 McDavid was 57.5% with Lucic and 56.9% away so Lucic was a 0.6% boost.

So Hall’s positive effect on McDavid was 16.6 times as great as Lucic’s.

    🙂

    Hunter’s contest:

    98 points for the Oil.
    24 goals for Yak.

30-23-53 for Ty if he plays all 82 games or 0.65 PPG

Great to see some crooked numbers in Bakersfield, especially on the powerplay. Hopefully a good mix of vets and blue-chip prospects to push for playoffs and feed the pipeline.

Couple of beers and some food at ‘The Avenue’ and now we are off to the Scandinaveum. Three oilers jerseys to every Devils jersey.

Also a lot of Lundqvist NYR jerseys and Frolunda jerseys

  61. Revolved says:

I’m still on the train, but I’ll be there by game time. This is going to be great!

It’s too bad Bratt got injured just before this game, as it’s probably a once in a lifetime chance for him and was one of the few swedes on either side.

Rieder going to the fourth line is a great sign of depth. Although a lot of that is youth, I am looking forward to seeing the rookies.

I read that Kinkaid is their likely starter, and I hope that his rough preseason (.896) continues tonight.

    hunter1909,

    Hey Hunter,

Mark me down for 99 points and 25 goals for Yak. Thanks for doing this! Can’t wait for this season to begin! Go Oilers!

  63. Bank Shot says:

    Oilers in midseason form. lol

  64. jzed says:

Lucic scored, well, there’s that. Brief periods of pressure after good forechecks, but too much ring around the boards Rosie from our top 4 D, Benning and Nuge getting shoved around, if we don’t move the puck, will be a long night.

  65. iHockeyWpg says:

    Hey wood guy

What was our record with Hall out of the lineup?

He was paid to be in lineup.

Being replaced by #13-14 fwd is a performance issue.

The record with him set a clear hill to climb to be playoff eligible.

Your piddly little 9% diff of 14min evTO is a drop in a bucket compared to the damage from his missed games.

Missed games is a performance measure.

I sit in unit 57 in foothills.
Post chemo and transplant, pucking, loosing 1 1/2 # a day.
WBC count on its way to .1

I not buying your table scrap minimal affect analysis

Failure to perform is more noticeable when you are paid to be there and you are not in the lineup
