Game Four 2018-19: Oilers at Jets

Let’s agree about this: There will be many games this season, especially on the road, where the Edmonton Oilers will need Cam Talbot to go all Dominik Hasek on the opponent’s ass. McDavid scores twice, something goes in off someone’s ass for the third goal, Talbot stops 55 shots and Edmonton wins in overtime. Let’s also agree tonight is such a night.

THE ATHLETIC!

The Athletic Edmonton is going to bring it all season long. Proud to be part of a lineup that is ready to cover the coming year. Outstanding coverage from a large group, including Daniel Nugent-Bowman and Jonathan Willis, Lowetide, Minnia Feng and Pat McLean. If you haven’t subscribed yet, now’s your chance. Special offer is here, less than $3 a month!

  • New Lowetide: Math offers a surprising option for Leon Draisaitl’s struggling No. 2 line
  • New Daniel Nugent-Bowman: Patience preached as Jesse Puljujarvi attempts to carve out his spot in the Oilers lineup.
  • New Corey Pronman: Around the farm. Prospects having early success (Oilers item).
  • New Lowetide: Oilers should make a waiver claim on Marko Dano.
  • New Lowetide: College and AHL prospect update.
  • New Lowetide: Panic storm on the horizon as Oilers remain a one-man show
  • New Justin Bourne: How hockey has changed for the better and allowed its young stars to shine.
  • Lowetide: Joel Persson’s early season performance in the SHL.
  • Lowetide: Practice lines in Boston, anger in Edmonton and Kailer Yamamoto remains on the No. 2 line.
  • Jonathan Willis: At 34, is Kyle Brodziak just too old to help the Oilers?
  • Jonathan Willis: Why Todd McLellan’s name keeps showing up on those ‘first coach fired in 2018-19’ lists

OILERS IN OCTOBER

  • Oilers in October 20150-4-0, goal differential -8
  • Oilers in October 2016: 3-1-0, goal differential +2
  • Oilers in October 2017: 1-3-0, goal differential -6
  • Oilers in October 2018: 1-2-0, goal differential -5

It’s funny how quickly these teams are separating from the 2016-17 playoff team. Bill James used to say the first 10 games dictated what kind of team you’ll be staring at all summer. My all-time favourite baseball team, the 1987 Montreal Expos, lost its first five games, went 4-6 in the first 10 and went 87-65 afterward. The Oilers would kill for 4-6-0 after 10 based on strength of schedule. Pretty sure.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OCTOBER

  • On the road to: Sweden to play NJD (Expected: 0-0-1) (Actual: 0-1-0)
  • On the road to: Boston, NYR, Winnipeg (Expected 1-2-0) (Actual 1-1-0)
  • At home to: Boston, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Washington (Expected 1-3-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Nashville, Chicago (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Minnesota (Expected 0-0-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 3-6-2, 8 points in 11 games
  • Current results: 1-2-0, 2 points after three games

It’s important to be realistic about this team. I’ve seen some comments like “if they can beat Winnipeg, they’ll be rolling” and that isn’t how this month is going to work. If they beat Winnipeg it’ll be a massive win, setting the team up nicely for the first homestand of the campaign. Without being too much of a jerk about it, the four teams who will visit Edmonton starting later this week are all much better than the home team.

Edmonton hasn’t yet replaced Andrej Sekera, perhaps hoping (as I have been) that Matt Benning can hold back the water on the second pairing. We’re three games into the campaign but it wouldn’t surprise me to find out the team is looking for more help. Pittsburgh is added to the list of teams doing same.

Oscar Klefbom and Evan Bouchard can pass well, Darnell Nurse can transport. Adam Larsson, Kris Russell and Matt Benning defend, as does Jason Garrison (who also has a great shot). If the Oilers are going to make a move, it probably involves Matt Benning heading out (Larsson and Bouchard/Bear being the other RHD). I wouldn’t move Benning, not when his value is low. In fact, I wouldn’t move him full stop until Bouchard and or Ethan Bear have shown they can play well consistently in the NHL. We don’t know one damn thing about either man yet.

5-on-5 points per 60

  1. Connor McDavid 3.43
  2. Darnell Nurse 1.97
  3. Milan Lucic 1.52
  4. Leon Draisaitl 1.42
  5. Ty Rattie 1.37
  6. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 1.27

That isn’t a lot of offense and not one spark squeezed without 97. It’s early but the problems of yesterday are still on the plate. Edmonton badly needs to make something happen, to have a breakout game that includes all four lines and a defenseman not named Darnell Nurse. The list above after three games (and three 5-on-5 goals) looks a lot like 2017, when the team scored four goals in the discipline over the first three games. Here’s last season’s numbers after three games:

  1. Connor McDavid 3.54
  2. Patrick Maroon 2.58
  3. Leon Draisaitl 2.57
  4. Zack Kassian 1.52
  5. Milan Lucic 1.47
  6. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 1.47
  7. Kris Russell 1.44
  8. Darnell Nurse 1.25

It’s a razor thin difference (one goal) and you might think that’s reason to remain calm. However, the Oilers one year ago were in the ditch after three games and the offense this year is about the same. That isn’t progress.

JETS VERSUS OILERS

This game favours Winnipeg but there are some interesting stats to look at heading into the game. At 5-on-5, the Jets are 6-8 in goal differential after five games, Edmonton 3-5 after three contests. It isn’t an advantage but one would expect Winnipeg to be well clear of the Oilers in this area. The other truly weird stat is about the penalty kill: Edmonton has been shorthanded for 10:31 over three games, probably because the opposition scores so quickly (three goals). Winnipeg has been shorthanded for 39:25, also allowing three goals, but shorthanded for damn near eight minutes a night. Unusually high.

MCLELLAN AVAIL

Todd McLellan gave a fairly detailed state of the union media avail yesterday, it ran close to seven minutes and in modern times that’s a double album. He seemed more upbeat the previous days (wins will do that for a coach) and had some interesting comments about Jesse Puljujarvi. Daniel Nugent-Bowman’s piece has the money quote (asked by Daniel) plus input from JP and Ryan Strome. A worthy read. Corsica.hockey gives us line numbers, here are the top four lines so far this season (all numbers 5-on-5, small sample alert):

  • Nuge-McDavid-Rattie: 38 minutes, 46 percent Corsi for, 2-0 goals
  • Lucic-Draisaitl-Yamamoto: 29 minutes, 37 percent Corsi for, 0-2 goals
  • Caggiula-Strome-Puljujarvi: 15 minutes, 50 percent Corsi for, 0-0 goals
  • Khaira-Brodziak-Rieder: 7 minutes, 55 percent Corsi for, 0-0 goals

A quick note: I am posting these numbers secure in the knowledge we all understand it’s very early days. You can’t make a sweeping claim about any individual player based on these numbers and honestly even the line combinations are just getting started.

    Lowetide,

Personally speaking, I’ve seen both Strome and Jesse playing well tonight. And Jujhar too.

  2. OriginalPouzar says:

Lowetide: How has he looked with Caggiula and Pulju to your eye? I’ve been very impressed with JP and have been caught watching him as opposed to the line.

Jesse and Leon have both looked good all game – both skating extremely well.

They are looking for each other offensively but are a few inches off so far.

  3. OmJo says:

Are the Jets really going to try sitting on a 1-goal lead?

  4. Lowetide says:

Lucic takes a penalty, if Pouliot had taken that it would have been a big deal.

  5. Rocknrolla says:

    BornInAGretzkyJersey:
    Rocknrolla,

Kevin Quinn just said #97 just passed Oates for the record.

Thanks record must have been 7 then…McJesus breaking records again! Not the one we wanted though!

  6. Dicky94 says:

Bullshit call. Rieder with a shorty!

  7. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

Weak charging call on Lucic, he’s been engaged all night and that wasn’t an atypical effort.

  8. OmJo says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Subject to updating with the other games tonight, Oilers PP McDavid is 5th in the NHL.

    Fixed it 😉

  9. little.fiery.one says:

An important kill here. I am happy to feel suspense about it.

  10. Jaxon says:

Puljujarvi really has to work on making his release faster, that last shot from the slot was painfully slow to leave his stick. He needs to work on more of a snap than a wrister or something.

  11. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    Rocknrolla,

All of the records are belong to Connor.

  12. theDjdj says:

    Lowetide:
Lucic takes a penalty, if Pouliot had taken that it would have been a big deal.

I miss Pouliot. Not enough is made about losing his forechecking and PK. Always added more than he gave up

  13. OmJo says:

    Lowetide:
Lucic takes a penalty, if Pouliot had taken that it would have been a big deal.

That’s two penalties since being taken off the 2nd line now.

  14. OmJo says:

But that was a clean, big hit.

    Bullshit call.

  15. theDjdj says:

I don’t want to hear a single complaint about that team. Absolute garbage call. One of the worst.

  16. OmJo says:

NHL is like… we can’t let McDavid win.

  17. Lowetide says:

Leon needs to drive to the net there.

  18. OmJo says:

On the chat box on my stream somebody just said “lucic cant charge he cant move fast enough” lol

  19. little.fiery.one says:

    Lowetide:
Leon needs to drive to the net there.

Agreed, at least just telegraph the pass a bit less obviously.

  20. theDjdj says:

    Overthought it

  21. Gret99zky says:

    OmJo:
But that was a clean, big hit.

    Bullshit call.

Official should be suspended for that.

Lucic doesn’t take one stride in the “charge”. Absolutely unforgivable officiating. Terrible. Full stop.

  22. vinotintazo says:

    vinotintazo: vino

    make that 5 …

  23. OmJo says:

theDjdj: I miss Pouliot. Not enough is made about losing his forechecking and PK. Always added more than he gave up

I still say he was a very underrated player here. Easy scapegoat however.

  24. Lowetide says:

    Puljujarvi scores.

  25. OmJo says:

The Jets are very good at blocking passes/clearing attempts with their sticks.

  26. Alpine says:

    JESSE!

  27. treevojo says:

    Jesse mon

  28. OriginalPouzar says:

What a goal to tie the game.

  29. theDjdj says:

Hopefully we get a make up call

  30. Dicky94 says:

    Woooooot!!!

  31. jake70 says:

    Lowetide:
Leon needs to drive to the net there.

Agree. Down by 1, you are that close to the goalie short handed, a shot has to get taken there.

  32. Gerta Rauss says:

lol….JP pays the price and gets rewarded…!!!

  33. OmJo says:

Put him on the top line and he scores!

  34. €√¥£€^$ says:

    YESSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. little.fiery.one says:

    FUCK YEAH!

  36. Réal Goudenyéu says:

So did this game turn around when coach changed the lines?

  37. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    JP cashes.

  38. Nailer Yakumoto says:

    :]

  39. Jaxon says:

    Holy F, that was beautiful!

  40. OmJo says:

With a little botched Bobby Orr celebration afterwards lol

  41. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

That 90s line could be a thing. Would like more evidence.

  42. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    McDavid gets ALL the pointz!!!

  43. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

    LOL!

Like some sort of crack dealer the team knows just when we need a hit.

Change the colour of the cap, make people think its new shit. Classic Wire move.

  44. Dr. Taboggan says:

I heart JP. McDavid is a god!

  45. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

Also, Benning and Garrison both +1 on the last tally.

  46. Jaxon says:

OmJo: I still say he was a very underrated player here. Easy scapegoat however.

Agreed, although he hasn’t made anyone regret the move with his play since. Is he even in the NHL this year?

  47. godot10 says:

    OmJo:
But that was a clean, big hit.

    Bullshit call.

When you take two strides and glide all night, when you take four strides it looks like charging.

  48. OmJo says:

    Réal Goudenyéu:
So did this game turn around when coach changed the lines?

    Hm…

Rattie scored with McDavid to make it 4-2 Jets.
McDavid scored on the 5L PP to make it 4-3.

So I’d say no. The game turned around when McDavid decided it was time to turn it around.

  49. Rebillled says:

    Holy Jesus.

  50. jtblack says:

    McDaviD ON – 9
    McDavid OFF – 0

    Even Gretz would blush

  51. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    Chelios is a Dinosaur,

The Wire is one of my Top 5 all time TV shows.

  52. Glass says:

Team came alive when the lines were changed. If we can have an effort like this 3rd period all the time we’ll be okay.

  53. Material Elvis says:

JP has been dialed in. Credit to TMc for noticing and letting the horse run.

  54. OmJo says:

    BornInAGretzkyJersey:
Also, Benning and Garrison both +1 on the last tally.

I think Benning has quietly had a good bounceback game.

Jaxon: Agreed, although he hasn’t made anyone regret the move with his play since. Is he even in the NHL this year?

    Nope, he’s still a UFA.

  55. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Chelios is a Dinosaur:

Change the colour of the cap, make people think its new shit. Classic Wire move.

    I understood this reference.

  56. theDjdj says:

Lost in all this will be how good Nuge has been

  57. fishman says:

Have barely noticed Brodziak tonight. Wasn’t on the ice for last penalty kill? Is he hurt or just over the hill? If the later that would be another horrible signing….

    Go Conner!

  58. OmJo says:

    Big save Talbot!!!

  59. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    OmJo,

83 had a shaky start but has settled in since.

  60. leadfarmer says:

Who would have thought playing Jesse with skill would work

  61. leadfarmer says:

So how many games we go before a non Mcdavid on ice goal?

  62. OmJo says:

That didn’t look good for Draisaitl…

  63. OmJo says:

    leadfarmer:
So how many games we go before a non Mcdavid on ice goal?

    Everybody but TMac?

  64. Material Elvis says:

godot10: When you take two strides and glide all night, when you take four strides it looks like charging.

He actually outskated Chiarot down the ice. That is a reasonable top gear. Less gliding at the moment.

  65. OriginalPouzar says:

    OmJo: Hm…

Rattie scored with McDavid to make it 4-2 Jets.
McDavid scored on the 5L PP to make it 4-3.

So I’d say no. The game turned around when McDavid decided it was time to turn it around.

You mean when McDavid bobbled the puck and Rattie found it and lazered one home.

Or maybe when the PP looked great and Nuge hit the post sending the Jets scrambling and the puck found McDavid with a partially empty net?

Or when Nuge made a fantastic pass to Jesse who showed great strength to stand his ground and power it home?

The TEAM is full credit for this comeback!

  66. Crazy Pedestrian says:

    leadfarmer:
So how many games we go before a non Mcdavid on ice goal?

Was there a hunter’s death march for that??

  67. OmJo says:

JP no longer on the top line. Lol.

  68. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

    OriginalPouzar,

Yeah but, the captain leads. Not a one man show, or a one man team, but the best player in the world who carries the team until they can get their legs under them.

  69. OriginalPouzar says:

    BornInAGretzkyJersey:
    Chelios is a Dinosaur,

    Top 1.

  70. SK Oiler Fan says:

    That’s blatent interference on mcdavid.

  71. Material Elvis says:

    leadfarmer:
So how many games we go before a non Mcdavid on ice goal?

    All year.

  72. leadfarmer says:

A few games with Lucic and Drai doesn’t seem to mind playing with JP anymore

  73. OriginalPouzar says:

    leadfarmer:
Who would have thought playing Jesse with skill would work

He earned his way up the lineup today with great play in the first half of the game – he was skating very well and getting in on pucks. Kudos to the coach for noticing he was going and moving him to Leon’s wing.

  74. OmJo says:

Let’s agree about this: There will be many games this season, especially on the road, where the Edmonton Oilers will need Cam Talbot to go all Dominik Hasek on the opponent’s ass. McDavid scores twice, something goes in off someone’s ass for the third goal, Talbot stops 55 shots and Edmonton wins in overtime. Let’s also agree tonight is such a night.

Going to overtime thanks to two goals from McDavid and a big Talbot save on a Tanev breakaway.

  75. Lowetide says:

    OmJo:
That didn’t look good for Draisaitl…

I thought I saw him out again after.

  76. OriginalPouzar says:

Lets give some credit to Talbot for a massive save on a breakaway to keep the game tied.

  77. Offside says:

If the Oilers score 220 goals this year and McDavid is in on all of them, yet they fail to make the playoffs; does McDavid lose out on the Hart?

  78. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

    Don’t tape over that period.

We may very well be in game 60, expectations met, and we look way back to game 4 as an early turning point. Its still early…

…and you gotta play the games!

  79. Lowetide says:

    Nurse scored.

  80. treevojo says:

    Darnell

  81. OriginalPouzar says:

What a goal by Nurse to win it.

  82. Nailer Yakumoto says:

    Well that was a rollercoaster.

  83. OmJo says:

    NURSE!!!!

  84. vinotintazo says:

    oh baby

  85. €√¥£€^$ says:

    Darnell the Jet killer!!!

  86. deardylan says:

good goal, bad goal…its just another comeback GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!

  87. little.fiery.one says:

Did McDavid manage to assist that from on the bench?

  88. Thorin says:

    Holy crap

  89. Jaxon says:

OMFG. That was greasy! Way to go Nurse. Nope, he doesn’t have any offensive skills. Woohoo!

  90. Rebillled says:

    HAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAH!

  91. jake70 says:

Ha….was just gonna rip Darnell for not shooting the first time to the net. Nice.

  92. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

    PLAN THE PARADE!

  93. OmJo says:

And that was the first non-McDavid generated goal!

  94. StixMalone says:

  96. Jethro Tull says:

What the fuck is this team. I need a lie down…..oi, oi, oi…..

  97. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

That was a redonkulous hockey game.

I had this game circled since the summer. 4:39 am in Italy but don’t need to go to work tomorrow. I came close to turning that thing off so many times…

  98. theDjdj says:

    Truth is stranger than fiction

  99. Paulie says:

Cornell McNurse with the beautiful toe drag wins it for the Oil!!

  100. OriginalPouzar says:

A couple things that don’t happen last year:

    1) we don’t kill that late shitty call on Lucic and lose 6-4 (empty netter); and/or

    2) Talbot does not make that save on the breakaway and we lose.

  101. Kmart99 says:

    Don’t call it a comeback

  102. Bag of Pucks says:

    Well that was unexpected…

  103. €√¥£€^$ says:

Well that was quite the ride! Only took TMac 3 2/3 games to quit being stubborn (well he WAS desperate) Nice to see Jesse get the push! I am a bit more optimistic about the next few games.

  104. Gerta Rauss says:

    Big win for the club

    Big

  105. jm363561 says:

Ok Winnipeg Dave …. did your son enjoy that?

  106. €√¥£€^$ says:

    Jethro Tull:
What the fuck is this team. I need a lie down…..oi, oi, oi…..

    LOL!!!

  107. Jaxon says:

That’s a relief. Before this game, I was worried they might be 1-9 going into Chicago. They looked like a playoff team in the final period.

  108. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Acceptable. LOL

  109. Gerta Rauss says:

2W and 2L heading home with some momentum

Couldn’t have asked for anything more

  110. blainer says:

Well that was unexpected.. love the game this team brought in the third..

I thought for sure this would be a blowout for the Jets and I’m very happy to be wrong..

2 goals on the PP as well..

This game could be a huge confidence lift for the team and love that Nurse goal….

  111. €√¥£€^$ says:

    Winnipeg Dave,

Dave, you’ll have to tell us what that was like!

Talking about memories, wow, awesome for both of you!!

  112. leadfarmer says:

My favorite part of season so far is Chia looking at Kassian and going I like your game so much I will clone you.
    And then
    Garrison benched
    Brodziak playing 7 min
TMac has his warts but it’s clear hes not getting much help from GM and is making that into a point

  113. ashley says:

    Crazy Pedestrian:

Glad I opted not to watch the Game tonight…

    Missed a good one.

  114. OmJo says:

Until we can win a game with McDavid not getting all of the points minus one, I’m not getting optimistic about this team.

Taking it one game at a time and whatever happens, happens.

I called Connor to be in on 1st 10 Oiler goals. I’m happy streak is broken and Darnell scoring. Next steak to break I’m hoping for is Leon to get points without Connor. Going to sleep well tonight

  117. theDjdj says:

Classic abuse perpetrator. Abuses and then make you feel good

  118. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

The best player I ever saw live was Wayne Gretzky. Best player in my lifetime. Bobby Orr might have been better, but I doubt it.

If anyone was a sniff within Gretzky contemporaneously, it could only be Mario, correct?

I think McDavid might be better than Mario when this is all said and done. Or, at least as good. Hard to measure.

Point is that 97 is insane, to a degree that we won’t recognize until this team starts winning.

  119. Material Elvis says:

This game could be a huge confidence lift for the team and love that Nurse goal….

Jets stepped off the gas just a bit too much and paid for it big time.

Got rear ended by McDavid and that was all she wrote.

  121. theDjdj says:

Winnipeg Dave I was so worried for you and your son. I was just glad he got to see a McDavid highlight goal. Now he’s been blooded as a full blown Oilers fan

  122. Zow says:

Hope this makes the boys gel !!!Could be the biggest game of the season for the coach and certain players!!!:)

  123. Jaxon says:

When did Sportsnet hire Ed Helms? Holy crap I never noticed how much of a doppelganger Kevin Quinn is.

  124. Jaxon says:

That was an uncomfortable question for McDavid as it not only talks about him as an individual rather than the team, but it also makes the team look bad.

  125. OriginalPouzar says:

Feel free to enjoy the win that just happened, I mean, if you want to.

I think McDavid might be better than Mario when this is all said and done. Or, at least as good. Hard to measure.

Point is that 97 is insane, to a degree that we won’t recognize until this team starts winning.

He does it all matched against other top lines and top defensive pairs every night. When Drai or someone else can drive a second line that’s all she wrote for opposition defenses.

Interesting to see that Puljujärvi is third on the team in carry ins and ties McDavid in %age vs dump ins. No wonder McLellan dislikes him…

Also. When I changed diapers on my 8 week old today while wearing an Oiler t-shirt he decided to take a leak all over the Oil drop. Don’t know if it was him reviewing the team’s play to start the season or a good omen but his aim was spectacular.

After watching the whole game I realized nothing could be further from the truth. Best game of the season, and it’s not even close. Thought Oilers carried the play for most of that game. Created more chances and, other than the first goal I liked our man to man coverage in the dzone. Thought a lot of players had their best game of the year.
Even when they were down 4-1 after 2 I thought Oilers had been the better team. Not sure what all the negative bloggers here were seeing.

  198. Winnipeg Dave says:

Wow, what a game to be at and experience with my son. It certainly wasn’t looking good after the Jets second goal, but my son went nuts when McDavid scored his first. As we sat there waiting for the third period to start he told me the Oilers were going to come back. If I’m honest, I didn’t believe him, but that third period performance was something else. Reminded me of 2016/2017.

Even before the comeback I was going to be going home happy; my boy had a great time. It’s really something else to watch the game through his eyes.

Despite the score I actually thought the Oilers were playing well the first two periods aside from a few baffling sequences that the Jets capitalized on. We mustn’t forget that the Jets have a whack-load of talent.

I’ll need to watch the game on PVR to verify, but I seem to recall Caggiula just standing there on the first Jets goal with no effort to check Lowry.

McDavid… its all been said already, but what an absolute treat to see live. Did you guys know that he’s really fast?

I saw Puljujarvi really good tonight. Strong on the puck, good forecheck, some offensive chances; I was really happy to see him get one.

Nuge can play on my team any day. I like everything about his game.

It looked like Draisaitl was really pushing himself, and he looked good, but on that short-handed opportunity in the third, he needs to shoot that puck. Actually I saw a few times the Oilers would try to force a pass when they probably should have shot.

Just a random comment here, but I took my son down to the glass in the Oilers end for the warm-up, and seeing them up close like that it really struck me that these guys are just kids! Maybe I’m just getting old though.

All in all, a great night. Surely this game will have a positive influence on the team; they beat a really good squad tonight.
