Game 44 2018-19: Panthers at Oilers

We’ve reached the point in the season where the blog will go “split screen” in coverage. It coincides with my work at The Athletic (my Winter Top 20, the complete edition, is published there today) as we incorporate the draft and prospect pipeline into the mix.

The Oilers begin a vital homestand—six of the next seven are at home, most against mid-level opposition. I think Edmonton needs 10 points. One question I have that pertains to the big club: How many current Condors will see action in the NHL while the season holds playoff hopes?

THE ATHLETIC!

The Athletic Edmonton is going to bring it all season long. Proud to be part of a lineup that is ready to cover the coming year. Outstanding coverage from a large group, including Daniel Nugent-Bowman and Jonathan Willis, Lowetide, Minnia Feng and Pat McLean. If you haven’t subscribed yet, now’s your chance. Outstanding offer is here.

  • New Lowetide: Complete Oilers top 20 prospects, Winter 2018
  • New Jonathan Willis: Analysing the risk of heaping heavy minutes on Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
  • New Lowetide: Oilers midseason report card, brought to you by the letter ‘F’
  • New Jonathan Willis: Unlikely scorer Jujhar Khaira has forced his way up the Oilers’ lineup on merit.
  • New Black Dog Pat: There’s no in-season balancing for the Oilers
  • New Lowetide: Oilers No. 10 prospect Winter 2018: Dylan Wells.
  • New Daniel Nugent-Bowman: From 2 to 98, Oilers share the stories behind their jersey numbers.
  • Lowetide: Oilers No. 9 prospect Winter 2018: Joel Persson.
  • Lowetide: Oilers No. 8 prospect Winter 2018: Kirill Maksimov.
  • Lowetide: Oilers No. 7 prospect Winter 2018: Caleb Jones
  • Lowetide: Oilers No. 6 Prospect winter 2018: Cooper Marody
  • Lowetide: Oilers No. 5 Prospect winter 2018: Ethan Bear.
  • Lowetide: Oilers No. 4 Prospect winter 2018: Ryan McLeod.
  • Lowetide: Oilers No. 3 Prospect winter 2018: Tyler Benson.
  • Lowetide: Oilers No. 2 Prospect winter 2018: Kailer Yamamoto.
  • Lowetide: Oilers No. 1 Prospect winter 2018: Evan Bouchard.

OILERS AFTER 44

  • Oilers in 2015: 17-23-4, 38 points; goal differential -24
  • Oilers in 2016: 22-15-7, 51 points; goal differential +4
  • Oilers in 2017: 18-23-3, 39 points; goal differential -25
  • Oilers in 2018: 20-20-3, 43 points; goal differential -11

I think we’re probably safe in estimating the Oilers coming in between 80-88 points, meaning an improvement year over year while finishing shy of the playoffs. It’s going to be a strange lead up to the deadline, the team apparently eager to add help for a playoff run. I think we might see that rare “buy in January, sell in February” run by Edmonton.

OILERS IN JANUARY

  • Oilers in January 2016: 2-2-1, five points; goal differential -2
  • Oilers in January 2017: 2-3-0, four points; goal differential -3
  • Oilers in January 2018: 1-4-0, two points; goal differential -12
  • Oilers in January 2019: 2-2-0, four points; goal differential -4

The month is starting out reasonably well for the team and I do like the fact the goal differential isn’t bleeding as much as we might have worried after that long losing streak at the end of December. A big game tonight, but you know that’s true tonight and every night the team still has a pulse.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN JANUARY

  • On the road to: ArizonaLos AngelesAnaheim, San Jose (Expected 2-2-0) (Actual 2-2-0)
  • At home to: Florida, Arizona, Buffalo (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Vancouver (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Calgary, Carolina, Detroit (Expected 1-1-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 4-5-2, 10 points in 11 games
  • Current results: 2-2-0, four points in four games

If the Oilers are going to make the playoffs, and they have a chance, then a strong run through to the all-star break is vital. I have them grabbing six more points this month, my guess is they’ll need 10.

HITCHCOCK’S FRINGE PLAYERS

When a new coach arrives on the scene, two things we should pay attention to are usage of roster players and previously fringe or minor league players getting a push. Ken Hitchcock has been around for 23 games (11-10-2) and here are some players who have been moving up and down the depth chart during the Hitchcock era. Increased playing time in bold:

Fascinating look at the changes we’ve seen up front. Hitchcock backed Ty Rattie off 183 seconds, Spooner 80, Nuge 38, Caggiula 27 compared to McLellan’s usage.

Hitchcock increased Leon’s time 175 seconds, Brodziak 146, Chiasson 141, Kassian 127, McDavid 121, Khaira 82, Puljujarvi 54, Rieder 29 and Lucic 4 seconds.

Funny thing: Nuge is flourishing with the reduction in playing time. McDavid, Draisaitl, Khaira, Puljujarvi, Lucic and Kassian have also increased offensive production in the new Hitch system. The Pulju spike is especially encouraging.

Massive change in less than two months. Part of this came due to injuries, but the emergence of Caleb Jones is at least one chapter in this season. I wonder if he would be averaging 17:47 under McLellan? I’m not sure. Larsson, Nurse, Russell are also up, in part because Klefbom has been injured (Russell too) during the last 23 games.

How much can you overhaul a six-man defense in the middle of a season? Newcomers Jones, Petrovic, Manning give the team a much different look. Gravel has also emerged as a regular under Hitchcock.

By the way, Matt Benning’s shot share has increased under the new coach.

STREETS OF BAKERSFIELD

Kailer Yamamoto is on IR currently and the Oilers badly need scoring. The play here is a recall, which would allow the team to rest both Ryan Spooner and Joe Gambardella (as opposed to just one of them).

Cooper Marody is the obvious choice, but Hitchcock saw Marody for two games when the coaching shuffle took place. I expect the coach either doesn’t think Marody can play center or doesn’t think he can help at this time. Or both.

So, who else is there? I’m going to suggest the organization plans to keep Tyler Benson on the farm all year. Cameron Hebig? He has 10 goals, five on the power play. Can he move the needle in the NHL? I don’t think Daryl Katz and Peter Chiarelli are going to place their big bet on Hebig.

CONDORS FORWARDS, 5-ON-5 PTS PER GAME

  1. Joe Gambardella .64
  2. Cooper Marody .61
  3. Patrick Russell .54
  4. Jesse Puljujarvi .50
  5. Brad Malone .44
  6. Tyler Benson .39
  7. Cameron Hebig .36
  8. Kailer Yamamoto .36
  9. Josh Currie .33
  10. Tyler Vesel .28

If you subscribe to the idea that a prospect should flourish before getting a recall, then Gambardella and Marody are the only considerations. Among AHL forwards who have played 20 or more games this season, Gambardella is No. 14 in points per game, Marody No. 21.

What does this mean? A trade. Edmonton is trading for a skill forward in the coming days. Mike Hoffman plays tonight for the Panthers, perhaps he’s in play.

    OriginalPouzar:
Its fairly clear that the team isn’t very good, however, there is a “not very good team” that is going to win that second wild card spot (likely ANA, MIN or EDM) and I’ve got a hard target on that spot.

Nope, I do not want management to make any moves to try and improve right now (I’m talking picks/prospects for rentals) but stay the course and see how we do over the next few weeks. Some reinforcements are coming back in the next 2-4 weeks, namely Klefbom and Sekera. That’s two material mid-season acquisitions for no cost. Klefbom we know makes a big difference and, even if Sekera is only “75%”, that’s a big bump over Petrovic, Manning, Benning and improves the team.

6 of the next 7 are at home and there are some softer teams in there.

This will be a season defining stretch.
    Lets go Oilers!

I’m glad you can stay optimistic.

Anybody have a link to the game

How in the 7 Hells was that goalie interference?

  4. €√¥£€^$ says:

It’s like watching flip drawing animation.

This is much much worse than rabbit-ear vision in the 80’s trying see what was going on thru the on-screen “snowstorm”. I’ve never seen reception like this before (got over 40 decades of tv watchin experience), it is terrible to try to watch this…..

I guess some would enjoy this as there is no audio….

Gotta go, feel a seizure coming on….

  5. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    tileguy,

reddit nhl streams, I like the bilasport feed (watching now) as there are no ads or pop ups
onhockey.tv works really well too, lots of feeds

Or if you’re on an Android device, I like to use the Cast Streams app and log in with a Google account. It’s generally the most seamless of the mentioned options but needs a good Internet connection (which I don’t have outside of the city) to stream without being choppy.

  6. drglen says:

    darn…how did that happen

  7. OriginalPouzar says:

Good pace early – couple high danger chances for the Oil they haven’t been able to capitalize on.

Talbot looks solid early – some nice saves on the PK on one-timers.

  8. Marlowe says:

    tileguy,

I don’t want to break any rules here, but I usually head to the subreddit nhlstreams (https://reddit.com/r/nhlstreams) and click on the Edmonton Oilers thread. Cheers.

Chiasson with the Nuge no-look backhand pass? Beautiful!

  14. OriginalPouzar says:

Jones got lost there – not sure what he was trying to do.

Jones has now started to bleed chances off the rush – we need Klefbom back.

Atta boy Darnell, way to get it back.

  15. Bank Shot says:

    drglen:
    darn…how did that happen

Caleb Jones somehow ended up behind the forwards instead of infront of them.

Shots 9-4 for Florida, but 3 or 4 of those have been from outside the blue line.

  21. Bling says:

    GREAT back check by Chiasson.

    They have never recovered

    The Story of McDavid.

  31. fishman says:

    Love Darnell Nurse.

  33. Lowetide says:

    After One:

    1-1 tie
    11-5 Florida shots
    14-14 Corsi 5-on-5

Lucic had some chances I swear he did.

  34. kelvjn says:

    LT,

Oh no. Pleased not the draft watch. After Hitchcock apparently righted the ship amid the winning streak, I thought great, there is no need of LT draft talk until Christmas this year. Sure enough when the LT 2019 top prospect list came out 12/21/18, it coincided with the beginning of the losing streak.

For as much Stan Weir helped the oilers chances, the draft article seemed to do the opposite.

We are still within a few points from the last playoff spot. Can we hold off until a little later? Until all star break or possibly until mathematical elimination?

All joking aside, thank you for creating this gathering place. Learning about the prospects is often the last glimmer of hope in seasons that had lost all cause.

  35. Professor Q says:

Four games in a row with obvious penalties gone uncalled.

How the league isn’t embarrassed with itself is beyond me.

  36. giddy says:

OriginalPouzar: He did light in up in his draft plus 3 year – just under a PPG.

Puljujarvi is at a PPG in the AHL in his draft plus 3 year – of course, only 4 games – I don’t think we can say the Connolly liting it up is a “major difference” as Jesse didn’t get the opportunity and did so in the very small sample that he has.

For sure. And as the other poster pointed out, I was incorrect and Connolly was +4 when traded.

Agreeable that Puljujarvi didn’t get much of a chance to light ip the AHL. Not a slight to Pulju, just a difference between the two.

  37. Lowetide says:

Jones-Larsson were 3-2 in shots, Nurse-Russell 1-4. The first pair got the GA, the second pair the GF. Let’s do that hockey!

  41. wood99 says:

Brutal rebound buy Talbot. Horrible ,hard to have confidence in your goalie when he puts a wide open shot straight out in the slot on a simple play. Disheartening.

  42. iwin76 says:

That holding by Russell sure looked similar to the Barkov hold on McDavid in the neutral zone…….

  47. wood99 says:

It appears that seems to be the way to beat the oilers. I’m not watching the game, but I’m guessing Florida is playing trap hockey?

  59. ArmchairGM says:

The Oilers will never score again.

  63. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    OmJo,

I think you mean to say the former Caps GM built a pretty good team in Vegas?

Nurse has 4 of the Oilers’ 9 shots.

  65. Crazy Pedestrian says:

ArmchairGM: Nah, they just keep it in the Oilers zone.

Ahh… the other way to beat the oilers… simply cycle the puck.

  66. Professor Q says:

Draisaitl tripped, with no penalty called.

It’s tiring just thinking about it now.

  67. wood99 says:

    Bank Shot,

I get the sarcasm but can you honestly think Talbot inspires confidence for his teammates?

  68. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    Professor Q,

Leon fell, but it was absolutely a slash to the hands by Matheson.

And finally we get a 5 on 3 from a legit trip on The Germanator.

  69. OriginalPouzar says:

That 2nd PIM to put us up 5 on 3 was a terrible call – Leon wasn’t tripped.

    I’ll take it.

  70. Bling says:

    Love the timeout here.

  71. OriginalPouzar says:

My goodness Barkov has a great stick and anticipation on the PK.

  72. Professor Q says:

    BornInAGretzkyJersey,

He whacked him in the knees at first, which could have caused him to fall. The second whack was into the hands and the midsection as he was falling.

  73. Ice Sage says:

Wow this is a bad Oilers version.

  74. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    Professor Q,

With the delay between the two hacks it looked like Leon fumbled his footing to me, but I’d have to see a replay to say for sure. At least we got a follow up call, for once.

  75. Chief Inspector says:

    Connor!

    It was a joke lol

The Panthers “gave” the Golden Knights Gallant, Marchessault and Smith.

  78. nelson88 says:

Take a shot at net against a below average goaltender and get a rebound. Go figure. Oilers have to stop thinking they are the Harlem globetrotters

  79. Ice Sage says:

    Good timing, 97

  80. Professor Q says:

OmJo: It was a joke lol

The Panthers “gave” the Golden Knights Gallant, Marchessault and Smith.

And the Golden Knights didn’t have to give up a 2nd for the personnel!

  81. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    OmJo,

    LOL! *derp

  82. Pretendergast says:

What’s up with these guys? They are not entertaining and don’t look to give much of a damn, pretty resigned to staying on the outside. Everyone and their dog knew Chiasson was the only one time option so Barkov just sat in the lane. Can’t watch it, click, back to curling and a book.

  83. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    Professor Q,

How many other teams had to forfeit draft picks as compensation for hiring other (fired!) executives?

That debacle still chaps my ass.

  84. ArmchairGM says:

    OriginalPouzar:
That 2nd PIM to put us up 5 on 3 was a terrible call – Leon wasn’t tripped.

    I’ll take it.

1 minute of 5-on-3 and not. a. single. shot.

  85. Lowetide says:

    After Two:

    2-2 tie
19-13 Florida shots (8-7 Edmonton in the second)
29-24 Florida 5-on-5 Corsi (15-10 Florida in the second)

    They need Klefbom. And Messier.

  86. OmJo says:

    Talbot for Bobrovsky?

  87. Jethro Tull says:

ArmchairGM: 1 minute of 5-on-3 and not. a. single. shot.

Not true! You take that back! There was one 45 seconds in.

  88. Bling says:

    Positives after two:

1 – Seemingly not much rhyming for McDavid, but he still has 1+1.
2 – Nurse has been excellent on both sides of the puck.
3 – JP having a good game. Dangerous hard low shot, good zone entry on the PP, winning battles down low and causing some turnovers.
4 – Draisaitl is setting the tone by cutting into the middle.

    Negatives:

1 – The Jones/Larsson pairing is an adventure.
2 – The bottom six has been terrible.

  89. Professor Q says:

    Dremenda is actually right there.

Oilers are passing waaaaay too slowly and too frequently.

They also pass more to the blue line or to the outside, as opposed to the slot or to the net. Leads to an increased amount of takeaways, and breakaways for the opposition.

  90. OriginalPouzar says:

That is one bad shift by Jesse……

  91. little.fiery.one says:

Jesse needs some time with a skating coach.

  92. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    Professor Q,

Remedial is definitely more suited to his new role. That is, until he starts bitching about the demotion through utterly predictable self-depreciating humour. He’s so awkward it’s painful.

  93. jtblack says:

    Lmao!!

  94. OriginalPouzar says:

Lucic was 3 strides ahead – that was not icing – they should drop that at center.

  95. jtblack says:

I am not making this up.

Oilers have 15 shots. 5 are from Nurse. 10 are from D men.

Our forwards have 5 shots on goal halfway thru the 3rd

  96. Ice Sage says:

This game is a real chess… zzzzz

  97. Lowetide says:

That’s a costly goal against for the Oilers.

  98. Ice Sage says:

    whoops
    doubt that’ll wake anyone up

  99. OriginalPouzar says:

  100. StixMalone says:

    Nice goal from Larsson

  101. SK Oiler Fan says:

    That was one magic luggi

  102. Professor Q says:

    That’s game. Can’t have own-goal deflections.

  103. Chief Inspector says:

We need to plant Larsson in front of the net on the PP.

  104. OriginalPouzar says:

Hmmm, a fresh McDavid had a step on that Panther and a lane to the net and stopped up – that was odd and makes me wonder if he’s 100%.

  105. flyfish1168 says:

Don’t despair – there’s still the empty netter to come!

    omg

I was typing up the obit on this game lol

  116. BONE207 says:

    CONNOR

  117. wood99 says:

    Holy shit,proved me wrong!

  118. Ice Sage says:

    Love being wrong!

  119. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    Never count out Connor.

  120. Bling says:

    Holy Sauce Draisaitl

  121. v4ance says:

This team. We don’t deserve a point but I’ll take it

  122. Bling says:

You have to have ice running through your veins and a heart that beats at 30 BPM to make a pass like Drai just did with 8 seconds left.

    Astonishing play.

  123. OmJo says:

    Zelepukin:
I blame everything on the orange jerseys.

    That darn team in orange!

  124. Chief Inspector says:

    Wow

  125. Lowetide says:

Hitchcock is saying “there’s five minutes of overtime, but we only need one. We’re going to go balls out and win this thing early. Men, this is it.”

  126. oilersfan says:

    Woohoo!! My reverse curse worked!!!

  127. Zelepukin says:

I’m expecting McD to be skating his ass off for the hatty now.

  128. Professor Q says:

    Bling:

    Astonishing play.

In the words mouthed by Connor McDavid,

    “What a pass, baby!”

  129. wood99 says:

    Let’s go Connor!!!!

  130. Professor Q says:

    Zelepukin:
I’m expecting McD to be skating his ass off for the hatty now.

He’s catching up to both Ovechkin and Kucherov.

  131. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

Nuge with the forearm shiver there. I love it. He’s underrated for his greasy play.

  132. SK Oiler Fan says:

Take your time out dammit to keep 97 out

  133. BONE207 says:

For the Oilers next trick, win games with only 10 shots.
I’m glad Reider didn’t score in OT.
    Saving it for Arizona…🤣

  134. BONE207 says:

    Woohoo

  135. Gerta Rauss says:

    wow….jaws, victory, something,something….

put a pin in this game, we may be talking about it in April

  136. Professor Q says:

I still hope Chiarelli gets fired this week.

  137. Chief Inspector says:

    Stole those 2 points!

  138. SK Oiler Fan says:

Talbot real patient on those. Good for him
    97 Wow.
The usual formula for the W
    3 on 3 was entertaining

  139. Ice Sage says:

    That’s a real efficient 2 points.
Orange ya glad we hung around?

  140. oilersfan says:

    Now that’s a Hitchmas miracle!!

Hitch is 11-3 with Russell in the lineup!

  141. OmJo says:

McDavid with a McDavid performance to will this team to a W.

  142. JimmyV1965 says:

In overtime, when you basically use four forwards, the Oilers have to be one of the most dominant teams in the league. Funny thing that.

  143. oilersfan says:

Now I know how Flames fans feel when you score after pulling the goalie!

Canucks, Blues, Wild, Stars and Ducks can all suck it long and suck it hard

  144. Bling says:

Some people will say that this game was boring, that the Oilers were lucky, blah blah blah.

All I’m taking from this game is that Leon Draisaitl is the best pure passer in Oilers silks since Dougie Weight, and I’ll go one further and say that he’s even better than the old 39.

Moreover, imagine having the game on your stick with 20 seconds left, blowing it, and then having the presence of mind to make that pass to McDavid.

    Now that is poise!

  145. Jaxon says:

I’m just gonna pop in and remind everyone that Nurse now has 16 pts in his last 17 games! This sample size is getting not insignificant.

  146. Bank Shot says:

The team still is bad but McDavid is always worth the price of admission.

  147. Pescador says:

    Bling,

Reimer made a brilliant save, 29 didn’t blow anything

  148. OilClog says:

You didn’t watch enough Dougie then

  149. Scungilli Slushy says:

Well if the Panthers, like the Oilers would do, want to leave the best player in the league open in front of the net, with the best passer in the league with the puck on his stick, there’s usually a price to pay, as we know.

  150. Pescador says:

    Bling:

Its easy to keep your BPM’s down when you’re that lazy.
    Sick dish, yet again

  151. OriginalPouzar says:

    Pretendergast:
What’s up with these guys? They are not entertaining and don’t look to give much of a damn, pretty resigned to staying on the outside. Everyone and their dog knew Chiasson was the only one time option so Barkov just sat in the lane. Can’t watch it, click, back to curling and a book.

You missed something entertaining – hope you are enjoying your book!

You wanna know what’s really depressing. There’s only four players on this team who can actually handle that pass and put the puck on the net, let alone score. There are 20 players on this team who would have simply flubbed the pass. Drai set up Reider for a beautiful chance in the slot tonight and he flubbed it. He also made a remarkable pass to Benning, who would have had a breakaway, but he couldn’t dig it out of his skates. Unless the pass is perfect, we have 20 players who don’t have the skill to do anything with it.

TO was used in way earlier in the game.

  154. Chelios is a Dinosaur says:

I want the Oilers to make the playoffs and for Chiarelli to be fired.

More of tonight is how you do it.

I mentioned this earlier in another thread. I think his production is outpacing his true offensive abilities/intellect, however, one cannot really argue with production and the man has produced since Klefbom has gone down.

    Is he a 40 point d-man?

  156. Glovjuice says:

    Jaxon:

    Hey. Don’t be a wiener.

  158. Professor Q says:

That contract is going to be massive once the bridge is up.

Yup, we are truly, honestly, no word of a lie, actually in rebuild mode. With ultra great pieces to start, but rebuild nonetheless.

    Is he a 40 point d-man?

The question is does he get points away from McDavid? That would show a growing acumen. Getting points with M & D involves making a pass in their general vicinity or finishing a sweet set up.

  161. SK Oiler Fan says:

OriginalPouzar: TO was used in way earlier in the game.

IC thanks. Just saw 3rd on.

  162. Bling says:

Glovjuice: Best game he has played to my eye.

Agreed. Best game of Nurse’s career.

Not just the points, either. Great awareness in the d-zone and tremendous passing.

  163. Bling says:

    OilClog,

Watched plenty of Dougie and he was amazing.

Drai is of similar caliber, but I give him the edge based on his wicked backhand sauce.

Anyways, two tremendous players that we were/are lucky to have.

  164. Bank Shot says:

It doesn’t highlight Nurse’s offensive ability as much as it exposes Klefbom’s lack thereof.

If Bouchard makes the team next season or the one after he takes all the points away from those guys.

  165. JimmyV1965 says:

Bling: Agreed. Best game of Nurse’s career.

Agree as well. From the second period on Nurse had a,career game in all facets. Very poised out there.

  166. drglen says:

wow. I missed the 2nd and third periods, just got the score now. We won the game?!?!

    How did Hoffman look tonight?

  167. JimmyV1965 says:

It’s an abomination that RNH is playing with a pair of wingers who have six goals between them. How is that even possible? Geez, I want to enjoy the win, but I’m really struggling.

Picked up an assist, he didn’t show up a lot but I did spend some time trying to find a good feed and might have missed a few things.

  169. Oz says:

    Lowetide,

Was there any cussing involved in that search 😎

The pass from the corner to Drai was a new wrinkle in his game.

Agree to disagree, Drai has a long way to go. One strong pass move doesn’t elevate over a hof passer 🤷‍♂️

  172. OriginalPouzar says:

SK Oiler Fan: IC thanks. Just saw 3rd on.

It was used prior to the 5 on 3 in, I believe, the 2nd period.

  173. OriginalPouzar says:

How does one check for P/60 (and similar individual stats) with and without players?

I know how get individual possession metrics with and without one other teamate and how to use the line tool on NST but I’m not sure how to get individual scoring metrics WOWY.

  174. OriginalPouzar says:

That was far from a perfect game last night but, at the end of the day, that team overcame another bad break goal that put it behind with only a few minutes left and scrapped for two points. More often than not, that “own goal” ends things but they got a massive tying goal that may have saved the season. A bonus point and this is a game to build on.

They couldn’t muster a ton offensively and Florida probably carried the play but they were kept to the outside and the Oilers had the advantage is scoring chances.

2 points in the bank and off to HNIC for another two.

  175. Professor Q says:

OilClog: Agree to disagree, Drai has a long way to go. One strong pass move doesn’t elevate over a hof passer 🤷‍♂️

While yes, he has a long way to go, his backhand and protection of the puck, for two, have reminded one of Mats Sundin (another HoFer, I know…) since he came into the NHL, which surely has to be exciting?

As for Weight, he actually wasn’t elite for very long, and his second best season was his last with Edmonton.

I think he’s a special player and has room to grow, which is even better. I hope he’s in Edmonton with McDavid for long after their current contracts are up.
