Game 53 2018-19: Blackhawks at Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers cannot shake this playoff race no matter how hard they try. The team received several breaks on the out of town scoreboard last night, and a win this evening could put the Oildrop just one point behind eighth place Vancouver.

THE ATHLETIC!

The Athletic Edmonton brought it yesterday, there’s a fabulous cluster of stories (some linked below, some on the site). Great perspective from a ridiculous group of writers and analysts. Proud to be part of the group. Outstanding offer is here.

  • New Lowetide: Setting the Oilers’ expected keeper list for the next GM
  • Lowetide: Entry deal AHL forwards give the Oilers an excellent trade pool.
  • Lowetide: If fast is the new big, how do the Edmonton Oilers get there in a hurry?
  • Jonathan Willis: Analyzing how well Peter Chiarelli and Keith Gretzky restocked the Oilers with their draft work
  • Lowetide: Finding a path to the playoffs may involve reckless use of future assets by the Oilers
  • Jonathan Willis: An Oilers blueprint for the 2019 NHL free agency period
  • Tyler Dellow: A deeper look at Connor McDavid and the Oilers’ 5-on-5 offensive changes under Ken Hitchcock
  • Corey Pronman: 2019 NHL Draft midseason rankings
  • Jonathan Willis: An Oilers blueprint for the 2019 NHL trade deadline.
  • Lowetide: Edmonton’s 2019 entry draft plans may change with new GM but needs are clear
  • Lowetide: Caleb Jones has impressive first showing in the NHL with Oilers.
  • Tyler Dellow: Four questions that the Oilers should be asking candidates for the GM job
  • Daniel Nugent-Bowman: New Oilers caretaker Keith Gretzky caught between earning playoff berth and keeping future assets
  • Daniel Nugent-Bowman: Goalless Tobias Rieder hopes to follow Zack Kassian and Milan Lucic and end his offensive funk.
  • Lowetide: Complete Oilers top 20 prospects, Winter 2018

OILERS AFTER 53

  • Oilers in 2015: 21-27-5, 47 points; goal differential -21
  • Oilers in 2016: 28-17-8, 64 points; goal differential +12
  • Oilers in 2017: 23-26-4, 50 points; goal differential -28
  • Oilers in 2018: 23-24-5, 51 points; goal differential -15

This year’s team has a back story that won’t see the light of day unless there’s a winning streak to come. The goal differential of the 2018-19 team is superior to 2015 and 2016, but the won-loss is close. The Oilers need a heater even more than the citizens of Edmonton (I think I have the usage right).

OILERS IN FEBRUARY

  • Oilers in February 2016: 1-2-0, two points; goal differential -8
  • Oilers in February 2017: 1-2-0, two points; goal differential -3
  • Oilers in February 2018: 1-1-1, three points; goal differential +2
  • Oilers in February 2019: 0-0-2, two points; goal differential -2

WHAT TO EXPECT IN FEBRUARY

  • On the road to: Philadelphia, Montreal (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-2)
  • At home to: Chicago (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Minnesota (Expected 0-0-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: San Jose (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Pittsburgh, Carolina, NY Islanders (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Arizona, NY Islanders, Anaheim (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: Nashville, Toronto, Ottawa (Expected 1-2-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 7-6-1, 15 points in 14 games
  • Current results: 0-0-2, two points in two games

There are very few “must win” games for a team like Edmonton because they enter most games as an underdog. That said, the Blackhawks are in a period of transition ala the Canucks, and the Oilers are the home team. They should win this game.

OILERS 5-ON-5 SCORING

  • McDavid, Leon and Nuge are the delivery men for this team, towering over the rest of the forwards.
  • Among the second group, Khaira, Chiasson and Rattie are in a range where we can estimate them as NHL third liners.
  • If the Oilers arrive at the deadline as sellers, my guess is there might be interest in Alex Chiasson, Tobias Rieder, Jujhar Khaira, Zack Kassian, Brandon Manning, Matt Benning, Kevin Gravel, Alex Petrovic and Cam Talbot.

CONDORS FORWARDS

  • Candidates for NHL auditions among Condors forwards include Joe Gambardella, Patrick Russell, Tyler Benson and Cooper Marody. Kailer Yamamoto hasn’t yet found the range in Bakersfield.

Sekera back (Oscar too) will be grand if he can play anything close to the effectiveness of his 2016-17 season. Sekera is on rehab for several days but the Oilers have to get down to the cap before then. If my math is right, an Alex Petrovic or Matt Benning trade for picks/minor leaguer/prospects gets it done.

CONDORS BLUE

  • Jones has stepped up this season, don’t think there’s much doubt he’d be first man up for a recall.
  • Bear and Lagesson are fine young prospects, Stanton and Lowe veterans with NHL experience. Logan Day? He brings skill and some chaos and has earned an NHL contract.
  • Numbers via prospect-stats.com.

OSCAR

Klefbom will skate this morning and then we’ll see. One expects he’ll be less than 100 percent dreamy first time out but his ability to move the puck has been sorely missed.

KEITH GRETZKY

Including tonight, Edmonton has nine games before the deadline. Interim general manager Keith Gretzky will make his first transaction in the coming days, as the organization makes room for Andrej Sekera.

One thing we can assume: Gretzky is in fact a caretaker general manager. If he were given more leeway, I expect this Oilers team would have added a scoring winger by now. These nine games before the deadline are crucial. No rentals added means Katz and Nicholson aren’t going to allow Gretzky to get help. I’m in favor of that route, and it’s also a tell. If you’re an Oilers fan who has been screaming for a full house cleaning, you might be on the way to getting your wish.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

A busy morning with lots shaking, we get started at 10, TSN1260. Scheduled to appear:

  • Daniel Nugent-Bowman, The Athletic. Keith Gretzky negotiating the rapids.
  • Jimmy Greenfield, Chicago Tribune. The Blackhawks are coming on, we’ll chat about progress, Caggiula and more.

Also working on an NBA guest, the trade deadline is Thursday at 1pm so we’ll check out the rumors. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. See you on the radio!

who: What’s so weird about it.
I don’t find tipping in point shots and shovelling home rebounds all that exciting. Necessary for a winning team, but not exactly riveting for the viewer.

Agreed. It was no sooner posted that I realized it was bad wording.

Changed it to we all have different ideas of what is exciting…or somehting like that.

  2. Woodguy v2.0 says:

Andy Dufresne: Is it possible that ALOT of people didnt fully appreciate what a massive signing McDavid was at 8 years?

Literally the best contract signing in the past 20 years.

I thought at the time that the MSM didnt fully articulate the value/importance/historical significance of the signing.

McDavid signing for 8 years floored me.

Crosby signed for 5 years out of his ELC

Malkin signed for 5 years out of his ELC

Tavares signed for 6 years out of his ELC

Matthews signing for 5 years is more the norm than McDavid’s 8 years.

I think McDavid’s agent failed him there.

  3. tileguy says:

Woodguy v2.0: You can’t really average the relative stuff though, samples are too small and spikes (up and down) are too large.

That’s why I like to post multiple seasons. You can eyeball it and get a feel for the “true level”

Try to take a median and not an average.

Sometimes it is a good idea to have at the players character as well!

  4. NicaOil says:

    Alpine,

Even a blind squirrel will find a nut. He get’s way too many hi quality chances to have n (0) goals. Predicting he get’s one soon!

  5. Andy Dufresne says:

frjohnk: Monahan, MacKinnon, Barkov, Scheifle now have amazing deals. T

If that is the comparison point,

    Matthews is an overpay
    Tavares is an overpay
    Nylander is an overpay
and Marner will almost certainly be an overpay. (Minimum $11m)

MAN! What is Rantanen going to get?

    Agreed.

That failure may be the ONLY reason the organization gets a do-over from this point moving forward.

That’s how big that signing is/was.

  7. OriginalPouzar says:

OriginalPouzar: As it turns out, Edler is pretty lucky and it looked much worse than it is – nothing broken – just banged up and should be good to go shortly.

To update (and fix I guess) my previous post, Edler does have a concussion and is expected to be out about a week.

  8. Andy Dufresne says:

I never cheer for a player to be injured (not even a Knucklehead or a Lame) , just want them sore enough that they cant return in the game they are playing against us. 🙂

Caveat: Unless its against us in the playoffs, in which case a 2 week recovery time is acceptable. 🙂

I thought for sure his agent would push for minimum term as well.

Imagine the eastern media headlines as soon as it was inked though.

    MCDAVID WANTS OUT

Funny you don’t see that headline for Mathews.

You know because Toronto is the envy of the world and everything.

    – $40MM+ on 4 players: yikes

    – Should Tampa “skill” their way to the Cup this year, there will be a changing of the guard in the league, and everyone will value goal-scorers and fast skaters most

  11. Andy Dufresne says:

Woodguy v2.0: Hey, hey now.Pete said it was 97 and 29’s contracts that tied his hands.

Especially if its Tampa vs Las Vegas

goal scorers, fast skaters, goalie, and balanced roster.

I had this same thought after the Matthews deal. I’m stunned he agreed to 8 years.

    Goals scored this season

    Reider 0
    JP 4
    JJ 3
    Rattie 3
    Lucic 5

    Total 15

    Alex Chaisson17

i guess we all have different ideas of whats exciting.

Tip: never go for a piss break when Brad Malone is on the ice.

Maybe we have different ideas of what “with the puck on his stick” means because Chiasson doesn’t have the puck on his stick very often and, when he does, its generally not very excitign.

  15. JimmyV1965 says:

Alpine: Drai has gotten and continues to get the McDavid boost that Tavares never had anything to close on the Island. Matthews had no McDavid boost. It’s a hell of a boost.

If you don’t think Drai is one of the most gifted offensive players in the league, you’re not paying attention. On the bright side, there’s 30 teams in the NHL that would break the door down to trade a character guy for him, along with his contract.

  16. OriginalPouzar says:

    Rebillled:
    Andy Dufresne,

    Reider $2mil 0 goals
    Lucic $6mil 5 goals

    That’s $8 million dollars.

Koskinen and Talbot are at $8.67 million dollars combined.

$16.67 million on these 4 is something.

Koskinen and Talbot are not $8.67M combined – they are $6.6M combined.

You can’t just take Talbot’s contract this year and add it to Koskinen’s contract for next year – Koskinen is currently $2.5M.

Lucic has been the team’s 4th most productive player in 2019….

  17. OriginalPouzar says:

I wonder if management knows that, just because Chiasson wants to re-sign, they don’t actually have to re-sign him…..

  18. OriginalPouzar says:

    Oil2Oilers:
Hitchcock talking about how good Reggie is at practice is the headline for me. Having a 1A defender return to the line up would be a big deal.

I would normally be right with you but I don’t really trust much Hitch has to say. He says ALOT of things….. and I am one of the more optimistic guys regarding Sekera’s return.

  19. frjohnk says:

MAN! What is Rantanen going to get?

Toronto is entering cap hell. But they are doing it as cup contenders.

Should be interesting what Rantanen will get. Landeskog and Mackinnon are signed for $11.8M. If Rantenan gets $10M, the Avs would have their first line signed for $21.8M. And they have some fantastic assets coming up.

Another team and player to watch is Tkachuk. Right now the Flames are paying their first line $17.9M ( among the best values in the league with players not on ELC) Even if Tkachuk gets paid big bucks, they will have 4 top line forwards for a reasonable cost. This makes the rest of the roster easier to build. Maybe they can get another James Neal contract to fit in under the cap. Heres hoping.

  20. OriginalPouzar says:

Monahan, MacKinnon, Barkov, Scheifle now have amazing deals. That allows their GMs more flexibility for the rest of the roster.

    Gaudreau too.

I’ve stated a bunch of times, while Treliving is very good at re-signing his own free agents (not so great with external signings), the flames are super lucky those two contracts were not up the following year – if they needed to be re-signed the following year, the market would have put $2M extra on each deal.

    Damn.

  21. OriginalPouzar says:

I bet they try and get rid of Marleau and/or Zaitsev ( that was a stupid contract) after the season is done. Zaitsev has a modified NTC that kicks in this summer. Together they account for almost $11M.

If they can get rid of these two contracts, they can probably keep the gang together and the window stays open for awhile.

  27. Rebillled says:

Yes, math was wrong there everyone.

  28. Bruce McCurdy says:

Alpine: One of them played with McDavid in their contract year and continues to request he be McDavid’s Kunitz instead of McDavid’s Malkin.

Kunitz, yeah right. As for “continues to request” what are you basing that on? Are you in the room? Expert at reading body language? Easy to believe both of these guys enjoy playing with each other, each enjoys more success n that scenario, but the Leon haters seem to apply 100% of this preference to Leon as if it’s some kind of character flaw while Connor gets a clean slate.

Getting rid of a 35 plus contract with a NMC and a player that is under-performing the cap hit seems difficult – I’m sure they will try.

Let’s go Oilers! Welcome back Klef.

  37. OriginalPouzar says:

Ward and Talbot have almost identical shitty numbers (GAA/S%).

  38. OriginalPouzar says:

    First save made!

  39. OriginalPouzar says:

Really really sloppy and disorganized play in the first 2 minutes with (no passes connecting, no outlets) and they take a penalty.

And they score a second in to the PP – uh oh…

  40. Professor Q says:

    No words for that.

I think I’ll go read some more The Way Of Kings, now.

  41. Dr. Taboggan says:

LOL Three games in a row. Former Oiler obviously.

  42. OriginalPouzar says:

There is really almost no chance that Gustafsson, Caggiula and DeBrincat won’t get on the scoreboard.

  43. Professor Q says:

I honestly thought Hunter was roughing up a fan against the glass there.

  47. OriginalPouzar says:

An extremely disheartening first 6 plus minutes – look like they are skating in glue, can’t make a pass, can’t defend the gap – so sloppy and they look extremely untalented as a group.

  53. hunter1909 says:

    Cam Ward, 2006 Oilers destroyer.

So guess I wasn’t the only one thinking that. Passing, puck handling simply atrocious! Playing nervous or just plain shitty?

  55. hunter1909 says:

Check out how the Hawks pass the puck at the opposition blueline. Sublime skill.

Then compare it to the Oilers blueline puck control, and start crying.

  56. hunter1909 says:

I hate to say this, but Kassian’s AWOL worse than Lucic.

  57. hunter1909 says:

The Lowe+MacT braintrust gets Chiarelli to bring in muscle like Lucic and Kassian who provide good protection in their debut season in 2016-17; since then the team stinks so the management will flush a lot of the muscle probably including Nurse right before he breaks out, since opposition beat Oilers anyway so don’t need to bother intimidating them … shades of Patrick O’Sullivan era Oilers.

  58. OriginalPouzar says:

That was about as obvious a holding penalty as I’ve seen – geez Brodziak!

  59. OriginalPouzar says:

There was an important plus save to Talbot on the one-timer!

  60. digger50 says:

    Good save!

    Let’s goooo shitty team!

  61. hunter1909 says:

    Oilers look totally laughable.

  62. silasbengtsson says:

Woodguy v2.0: I think McDavid’s agent failed him there.

How do you figure? I think this is simply a matter of difference in what each values. McDavid preferred security and guarantees himself 100mil regardless of possible injuries while Matthews seems to prefer having options and “only” (used loosely) guarantees himself ~57mil in the process.

The way I view it is as follows:

    ELC
    12.5 x 8 (100mil)
Age 28/29 (still reasonable bet for 8 years)
    16 x 8 (128mil)
    Age 37

    VS

    ELC
    11.63 x 5 (58mil)
    Age 26
    15 x 8 (120mil)
Age 34 (might be harder to secure long term)
    13 x 3 (39mil)
    Age 37

  63. OmJo says:

Methinks having Lucic out there with Kane and Toews is going to be regrettable.

  64. hunter1909 says:

I’ve seen table top bubble hockey players with craftier moves than Lucic.

  65. OriginalPouzar says:

With respect to Gustafson, he turns 27 in a month and this is the first year that he has been a full time NHLer.

Absolutely we could use that level of d-man but is there any chance the Oiler fanbase wouldn’t have given up on the player 3-4 or even 5 years ago?

  66. jp says:

That was pretty exciting by Chiasson.

  67. OriginalPouzar says:

  71. OriginalPouzar says:

Drai with another PP goal – Nurse may have set a career high in points there.

That may have bounced off of McDavid in front to Leon.

    30G for Drai.

Edit: Guess Chiasson touched it in front so no Nurse point.

Edit 2: Changed it to Nurse for the 2nd assist as I thought

  72. OmJo says:

    I never doubted you Leon!

  73. hunter1909 says:

Drai is dominating the special teams faceoff – both PK and PP.

Needs to win this 5 on 3 faceoff now.

  80. OmJo says:

This is where you take the lead, Oilers.

  81. Munny says:

    La-Z-Boy reclines into another one-timer.

  82. jp says:

    That was truly beautiful!

  83. OriginalPouzar says:

Drai with another PP goal – one timer.

More assists for McDavid and Nurse.

Still with like 1:45 of PP time.

  84. hunter1909 says:

There it is again. That goal suck goal.

  85. Gerta Rauss says:

    we want 10

  86. leadfarmer says:

    OriginalPouzar:
With respect to Gustafson, he turns 27 in a month and this is the first year that he has been a full time NHLer.

Absolutely we could use that level of d-man but is there any chance the Oiler fanbase wouldn’t have given up on the player 3-4 or even 5 years ago?

Yet Benning will still probably be here past that age

  87. OmJo says:

    Draisaitl hat trick this period?

  88. Munny says:

    Lordy.

  89. OmJo says:

    What a sequence

  90. Munny says:

So, they’re lower than us in the standings, so we’re getting the calls?

    Is that how it works?

  91. russ99 says:

    Woooo!

How many times did I say the last 3 years that Connor should be skating it in from the point on the PP creating chances for other PP shooters? That stationary half wall thing Connor does sucks the life out of our PP.

  92. OmJo says:

The Blackhawks coach looks like a douchebag with the way he chews his gum.

  93. OmJo says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Drai with another PP goal – one timer.

More assists for McDavid and Nurse.

Still with like 1:45 of PP time.

Thought I saw Nuge get credit for the second PP goal?

  94. Professor Q says:

I don’t think Edmonton has recently had such good fortune from the officials.

  95. leadfarmer says:

There’s been a lot of horrible decisions made by Chia,
But signing Mcdavid and Drai to 8 year contracts were not them even if he did cave to Drais demands
Can’t wait to here about the Mcdavid bump that Drai gets even though many players can’t piss a drop with Mcdavid

  96. Bling says:

This team is going to be a handful if someone can improve upon its depth. Nice period.

  97. OmJo says:

    Looked at NHL.com

McDavid and Chiasson given credit for assists on PPG 1.
McDavid and Nuge given credit for assists on PPG 2.

  98. Professor Q says:

OmJo: Thought I saw Nuge get credit for the second PP goal?

Yeah Nugent-Hopkins and McDavid with 2 point nights thus far, according to the broadcasters (though they were apparently incorrect, with the Chiasson addition).

    None for Nurse.

  99. little.fiery.one says:

This is kind of what it would look like if all of the penalties against McDavid that should be called were actually called. He is so good that refs don’t know how to calibrate and it is so frustrating — on most nights, tonight is an enjoyable exception.

  100. Melvis says:

Now I’m wondering about our PK, since the Hawks are getting the next 5 calls.

  101. Lowetide says:

    After One:

    2-1 Edmonton
    16-9 Edmonton shots
    18-16 Edmonton Corsi for 5-on-5

Penalties early and eight giveaways are reasons to bitch, but the PP came through and I thought Talbot played well.

  102. OriginalPouzar says:

    Sabres/Wild – MIN with a OTL

Panthers/Blues – STL wins in regulation

Caps/Canucks – VAN loses in regulation

    Habs/Ducks – 4-1 MTL late in the 3rd

    Preds/Yotes – 3-1 NSH after 2

    CBJ/COL – 2-2 tie

  103. JimmyV1965 says:

The way Drai is playing I wouldn’t be surprised if we could trade him for a character guy who can also score 15 goals, even with his albatross of a contract.

  104. Professor Q says:

    Bling:
This team is going to be a handful if someone can improve upon its depth. Nice period.

I am looking forward to Maksimov, Safin, Benson, McLeod, Samorukov, and Bouchard in the coming years, alongside Puljujärvi, Yamamoto, Persson, et al.

    And whoever else is added.

  105. OriginalPouzar says:

Fortunes certainly changed in the last 5 minutes.

Hopefully another PP goal early or at least find some momentum to play better at 5 on 5.

  106. OriginalPouzar says:

leadfarmer: Yet Benning will still probably be here past that age

….. and at Benning’s age, Gustafsson followed up a pedestrian 41 games in the NHL with a full season in the AHL.

So, a d-man at Benning’s age struggling in the NHL becomes a legit top 4 guy a few years later…..

  107. OriginalPouzar says:

    OmJo:
    Looked at NHL.com

McDavid and Chiasson given credit for assists on PPG 1.
McDavid and Nuge given credit for assists on PPG 2.

I believe it was changed at the venue – maybe they changed it back or the sites are behind.

  108. Bling says:

Drai is so good at taking that pass on the backhand and firing it forehand. What a cool skill.

  109. OriginalPouzar says:

Very solid forecheck shift by Lucic and Khaira coming off the PP – keeping momentum at 5 on 5.

  110. OriginalPouzar says:

Professor Q: I am looking forward to Maksimov, Safin, Benson, McLeod, Samorukov, and Bouchard in the coming years, alongside Puljujärvi, Yamamoto, Persson, et al.

    And whoever else is added.

Not all will “make it” but a few well and, for all we know, Maksimov could pop at the NHL level with that shot and the playmakers on this team – he’s also a responsible 2-way player and plus PKer in the OHL.

  111. Glovjuice says:

OriginalPouzar: ….. and at Benning’s age, Gustafsson followed up a pedestrian 41 games in the NHL with a full season in the AHL.

So, a d-man at Benning’s age struggling in the NHL becomes a legit top 4 guy a few years later…..

Benning is too small and has a tiny little stride resulting in crippling lake of speed for today’s NHL – not a good bet for top four D on any team above 20th.

  112. OriginalPouzar says:

Nuge between Lucic and Kassian on that shift – now that I think about it, those are two of the team’s most productive wingers recently…

  113. OriginalPouzar says:

Glovjuice: Benning is too small and has a tiny little stride resulting in crippling lake of speed for today’s NHL – not a good bet for top four D on any team above 20th.

He’s taller and heavier that Gustaffson…..

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t actually think that Benning is going to pop at the age of 26 line Gustaffson but he was brought up as an example and its good one to show that sometimes it take a long long time for a player to solidify himself or even pop.

  114. Munny says:

That looked like it was going to end in a Caggiula goal

  115. OriginalPouzar says:

Talbot has certainly settled down to this point and has made a few very very solid stops.

    *knock on wood*

  116. digger50 says:

    Never trade Jessie.

Every game he cracks me up.

  117. OriginalPouzar says:

Talbot with another plus save and then swallows up a point shot with no rebound to get a much needed whistle.

  118. Oddspell says:

If Talbot runs with it the next year, wtf do we do?

Trade Koskinen before July 1? How Oilers would that be?

Whoops, I didn’t realise this half comment got submitted.

  119. OriginalPouzar says:

Oh, Ty, you HAVE to bury that – damn!

  120. OriginalPouzar says:

Hopefully the Oilers play a better than perfect third period this time which would include more than just defending the neutral zone well but scoring an insurance goal…..

  121. digger50 says:

Rieder really needs to be replaced. He is just non existent out there.

  122. Lowetide says:

After Two: 2-1 Edmonton (no goals in the second period)

23-21 Edmonton shots (12-8 Chicago in the second)
34-30 Chicago Corsi for 5-on-5 (18-12 Chicago in the second)

A great chance by Rattie late in the period expect we’ll be talking about that one tomorrow.

  123. Nailer Yakumoto says:

Cant wait to see how they manage to lose this in overtime.

  124. OriginalPouzar says:

    Oddspell:
If Talbot runs with it the next year, wtf do we do?

    Trade Koskinen before J

It would be awesome of Talbot ran with it but, for now, we are talking about 2 periods so I’m not going to get overly concerned about that situation yet.

  125. OriginalPouzar says:

    Habs/Ducks – 4-1 Ducks lose in regulation

Preds/Yotes – ARI loses in regulation

CBJ/COL – After going down 3-2, the Jackets have tied it up with COL after 2.

    ___________

    Sabres/Wild – MIN with a OTL

Panthers/Blues – STL wins in regulation

Caps/Canucks – VAN loses in regulation

  126. OriginalPouzar says:

    digger50:
Rieder really needs to be replaced. He is just non existent out there.

I’ll take his speed, responsible two way play and PK help over any replacement we have (and, no, I don’t want any of the kids taken out of Bakersfield and I don’t even want Patty Russell or Joe G. taken out as they won’t be any better than Rieder and they are important to the farm).

Spooner would be a nice add – he’s dominating the game play at the AHL level – he’ll be back at some point when the cap is under control with Sekera.

  127. flyfish1168 says:

    Nurse bobbles another pass

  128. Dr. Taboggan says:

“did not have a goal in 19 games before that one”

  129. Zelepukin says:

    OriginalPouzar:
Spooner would be a nice add – he’s dominating the game play at the AHL level – he’ll be back at some point when the cap is under control with Sekera.

Or perhaps the AHL is his ideal fit. The sport version of the Peter principle.

  130. OriginalPouzar says:

    Oh, Cam, oh no…..

  131. Dr. Taboggan says:

Talbot has made some huge saves this game but man, he is never going to have another game with a sv% above .900.

  132. OriginalPouzar says:

I don’t think this is going to be a perfect period.

Oh, yikes, a third in a row….. geezus

  133. Gerta Rauss says:

Well, this series of events will go over well in our town

  134. Oddspell says:

    Oh jesus

  135. Munny says:

My Gord, what a nightmare. Hopefully the challenge works.

  136. Nailer Yakumoto says:

So how is Hughes character?? Does it fit the Oilers org?

  137. OriginalPouzar says:

Oh, that is goalie interference – for sure – I think that’s an easy one.

  138. little.fiery.one says:

Kane with the stick lift and goal, pretty slick.

  139. Munny says:

How the fuck is that not interference?

  140. OriginalPouzar says:

    Really? That’s a good goal?

  141. Dicky94 says:

    Last time you’ll see Talbot.

  142. Munny says:

    Nailer Yakumoto:
So how is Hughes character?? Does it fit the Oilers org?

There’s only one problem. Rumour has it he drinks… water.

  143. hunter1909 says:

    Plenty of time left!

    bwahahahahahahahahaha

  144. Dr. Taboggan says:

How the fuck was that a good goal?

  145. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

OriginalPouzar: It would be awesome of Talbot ran with it but, for now, we are talking about 2 periods so I’m not going to get overly concerned about that situation yet.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  146. npanciroli says:

I stand by that this team being very clear of the playoffs is a good thing. Better pick, less likely to trade away assets and more likely to be a seller at the deadline.

With that said this is even for the Oilers a hilarious collapse.

  147. Pretendergast says:

I think Cam realizes Broissoit was the smart one. Resurrect the career somewhere good.

  148. Jethro Tull says:

    Today, on Classic Tank Battles……

  149. hunter1909 says:

Munny: There’s only one problem.Rumour has it he drinks… water.

Krafty Kevin Lowe just slips them white wine.

  150. Pescador says:

    Shitshow, thy name is Oiler

  151. Munny says:

You know how in the NFL they have that referee/rules analyst who can explain the calls.

There’s no one who can do that job for the NHL No one.

  152. Ryan says:

    OriginalPouzar:
    Really?That’s a good goal?

Yeah, that was a terrible call.

Oh well, good night. I’d rather watch Netflix than garbage time.

  153. Dr. Taboggan says:

At least we have lots of quality assets to deal at the deadline…. hahahaha

  154. Munny says:

Jewels. Only a matter of time.

  155. Ryan says:

    Caggiula!

  156. Pescador says:

    Russell with the ice slide
    Goal
    Goal
    Goal

  157. npanciroli says:

Caggiula! Oh wait we traded him.

  158. Melvis says:

    Geez…go figure.

  159. flyfish1168 says:

Drake scoring is icing on the night

  160. Dr. Taboggan says:

    Of course.

  161. Gerta Rauss says:

The Oilers have already hit the showers

  162. Pescador says:

    Pescador:
    Shitshow, thy name is Oiler

    Sorry I meant fuckshow

  163. Dicky94 says:

And Drake kills the Oilers season. This team is so fragile. Tear it down Keith!

  164. Dr. Taboggan says:

Russell really needs to eat popcorn next game.

  165. Minister D- says:

I don’t really care who’s behind the Oilers in the standings: they’re the worst team in the NHL.

  166. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

    Dallas Eakins level collapse hahahaha

  167. €√¥£€^$ says:

Yuck, I am not surprised. This…..team?

I remember that goaltender interference call on RNH on the weekend and then see this non-call on Saad. What in the actual fuck is goalie interference then? I don’t think anyone really knows….

  168. hunter1909 says:

I’m beginning to wonder about this team.

  169. little.fiery.one says:

Talk of lack of character on this team makes me puke, but they also seem to have no resilience when things go bad on them.

  170. razor says:

    Gerta Rauss:
Well, this series of events will go over well in our town

You can really hear the boo birds raining down now

  171. Dr. Taboggan says:

Is it legal to have two goalies on the ice at the same time stacked on top of each other?

  172. russ99 says:

Really bad idea to challenge, team needed a time out,

Can we stop blaming our defensemen and look at our shitty forwards standing around and doing nothing on defense? Defense is a team game and a wide swath of our team just isn’t interested.

  173. Dr. Taboggan says:

“Great push back by the Oilers”

  174. hunter1909 says:

    little.fiery.one:
Talk of lack of character on this team makes me puke, but they also seem to have no resilience when things go bad on them.

To be fair, they’ve only been like that since the start of the 2017-18 season. or you could go as far back as blowing the lead vs the Ducks – something that’s never mentioned ever.

  175. Pescador says:

    Nailer Yakumoto:
Cant wait to see how they manage to lose this in overtime.

    Nope
    4 unanswered goals in what?
    6 minutes

  176. Jethro Tull says:

    russ99:
Really bad idea to challenge, team needed a time out,

Can we stop blaming our defensemen and look at our shitty forwards standing around and doing nothing on defense? Defense is a team game and a wide swath of our team just isn’t interested.

Bad idea to challenge? When it should have been clear cut goalie interference. Ok then.

  177. Oddspell says:

russ99: Can we stop blaming our defensemen and look at our shitty forwards standing around and doing nothing on defense? Defense is a team game and a wide swath of our team just isn’t interested.

If only we played any of our two-way forwards for more than… *looks* …10 minutes a game.

I know McDavid is good, but do we need to play him on a 22+ minute pace when we’re leading 2-1?

  178. hunter1909 says:

    Atlanta Thrashers redux.

  179. razor says:

So happy that Chia made that Cagguila for Manning trade before he was canned! Manning having a huge impact on this game!

  180. Réal Goudenyéu says:

The oilers are the most fucked up organization in professional sports.

I don’t know exactly what that means but I know it’s true.

  181. Younger Oil says:

It is very, very difficult to win a game in the NHL in which you let in a goal in the first two minutes of the game, or let in multiple goals in the course of a minute or two.

Cam Talbot does both of these things consistently. It is incredibly difficult to play in front of a goalie that you don’t have confidence in.

Yes, the Oilers as a whole need a thicker skin, but it would be easier to be resilient when you have a goalie you can trust every night.

  182. Dr. Taboggan says:

    Oddspell,

What “2-way” forwards are you talking about?

  183. GMB3 says:

    Holy fuck.

I wish I could understand the mental gymnastics the Chia supporters performed to convince themselves he did a good job of building this team. 7.5 million of his assets press boxed or in the minors. What a god damn horror show.

    Shameful.

  184. JAG-041 says:

    Dr. Taboggan,

    Dr. Taboggan:
“Great push back by the Oilers”

Lol I laughed at that too
Like way to go trying to still sell this game to us

  185. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    Munny,

Kerry Fraser does a magnificent job of this on Gregor’s show.

*Edit: in the case of me missing intended sarcasm, Kerry calls out the league/refs when they miss blatant calls and doesn’t seem to play favourites in his analysis.

  186. Pescador says:

    Minister D-:
I don’t really care who’s behind the Oilers in the standings: they’re the worst team in the NHL.

I’m predicting bottom 5 when the smoke clears.
That’s with two 40 goal, 100 point players

  187. Munny says:

    Injury, meet insult.

  188. tileguy says:

    Who can we fire now?

  189. Nailer Yakumoto says:

Hey, the Oilers suck, but at least the weather is good.

  190. Munny says:

    BornInAGretzkyJersey:
    Munny,

Kerry Fraser does a magnificent job of this on Gregor’s show.

Let me know when he can do it live during a broadcast.

  191. OriginalPouzar says:

    Dicky94:
    Last time you’ll see Talbot.

Is it the last time we’ll see Koskinen as well?

  192. Dr. Taboggan says:

    GMB3,

    Haha horror show indeed.

  193. hunter1909 says:

They’re going to need another red wine summit.

  194. Dr. Taboggan says:

OriginalPouzar: Is it the last time we’ll see Koskinen as well?

Haha you are killing it tonight.

  195. npanciroli says:

I feel bad for Koskinen being stuck here for 3 more years. Got suckered by an overpay.

  196. BornInAGretzkyJersey says:

    Munny,

    Touche

  197. Dicky94 says:

    OriginalPouzar,

Nope. I just think Talbot will ask out after this. I don’t think he should have been pulled there.

  198. digger50 says:

    Lowetide:
After Two: 2-1 Edmonton (no goals in the second period)

23-21 Edmonton shots (12-8 Chicago in the second)
34-30 Chicago Corsi for 5-on-5 (18-12 Chicago in the second)

A great chance by Rattie late in the period expect we’ll be talking about that one tomorrow.

    You foreshadowing son of gun

  199. Dr. Taboggan says:

This must all be part of the “Plan”.

  200. SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo! says:

I mean, on the plus side this HAS to amp up the pressure on this:

“If you’re an Oilers fan who’s been screaming for a full house cleaning, you may be about to get your wish.”

    Right? Right?

Man oh man this is a bad one.

6th epic bed shitting in six games, that’s 2013/2014 level bad
